Abstract
Four erbium(III) complexes with the fluoroquinolones enrofloxacin, levofloxacin, flumequine and sparfloxacin as ligands were synthesized and characterized by a wide range of physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques as well as single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The compounds were evaluated for their activity against the bacterial strains Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Xanthomonas campestris, which was higher than that of the corresponding free quinolones. The interaction mode of the complexes with calf-thymus DNA is via intercalation, as suggested by diverse studies such as UV-vis spectroscopy, DNA-viscosity measurements and competitive studies with ethidium bromide. Fluorescence emission spectroscopy revealed the high affinity of the complexes for bovine and human serum albumin and the determined binding constants suggested a tight and reversible binding of the compounds with both albumins.

Abstract
Four alkaline earth metal complexes of ketoprofen (Hket) and indomethacin (Hind) were synthesized and characterized: [Ca(ket)2(H2O)2]n (1), [Mg(ket)2(H2O)2] (2), [Ca(ind)2(EtOH)2]n (3), and [Mg(ind)2(EtOH)2] (4). All compounds were studied by elemental analysis (EA), flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Crystal structures of 1 and 3 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique T=100 K. The structure of 1 is dominated by a one-dimensional coordination polymer, while 3 is formed by a two-dimensional layer stabilized by the calcium zig-zag chains and π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. Crystal packing arrangements were characterized by fingerprint plots (FPs) that were derived from the Hirshfeld surfaces (HSs). The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of complexes were evaluated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as yeasts.

Abstract
Five erbium(III) complexes with salicylaldehyde (saloH for 1), and mono- (5-X-saloH; X = NO2 and Me for 2 and 3, respectively) or di-substituted salicylaldehydes (3,5-diX-saloH; X = Cl and Br for 4 and 5, respectively) were synthesized and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. All five complexes have the general formula [Er(deprotonated salicylaldehyde)3(MeOH)(H2O)]. The structure of complexes [Er(3,5-diCl-salo)3(MeOH)(H2O)]·1.5MeOH (complex 4) and [Er(3,5-diBr-salo)3(MeOH)(H2O)]·1.75MeOH (complex 5) were verified by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The evaluation of antioxidant activity of the complexes was focused on their ability to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) free radicals and to reduce H2O2. The interaction of the complexes with calf-thymus DNA was investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy, viscosity measurements and via competitive studies with ethidium bromide in order to evaluate the possible DNA-binding mode and to determine the corresponding DNA-binding constants. The affinity of the complexes for bovine and human serum albumins was explored by fluorescence emission spectroscopy and the corresponding binding constants were determined.

Abstract
Binary complexes of tartaric acid with lanthanide(III) ions were investigated. The studies have been performed in aqueous solution using the potentiometric method with computer analysis of the data for detection of the complexes set, determination of the stability constants of these compounds. The mode of the coordination of complexes found was determined using spectroscopy, which shows: Infrared, circular dichroism, ultraviolet, visible as well as luminescence spectroscopy. The overall stability constants of the complexes as well as the equilibrium constants of the reaction were determined. Analysis of the equilibrium constants of the reactions and spectroscopic data allowed the effectiveness of the carboxyl groups in the process of complex formation.

Abstract
Mesoporous silica nanoparticles prepared by organic template-driven synthesis have been successfully explored as carriers of the drug-derivate green luminescent complex of terbium (III) with the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug ketoprofen. The terbium (III) complex was synthesized by reacting ketoprofen sodium salt with terbium (III) chloride, which was further adsorbed onto the surface of mesoporous nanoparticles with a mean particle size of 47 ± 4 nm and pore size of 11 nm. The incorporation of the complex into mesoporous silica nanoparticles was tracked by the decrease in the surface area and pore size of the nanoparticles, and successfully demonstrated by substantial changes in the adsorption isotherms and thermal and vibrational spectroscopy results. The cytotoxicity assay and confocal microscopy have shown that the novel luminescent nanohybrid presents high cell viability and the characteristic terbium (III) emission can be assessed through two-photon excitation, which paves the way for bioimaging applications in nanomedicine.

Abstract
Binary complexes of citric acid (H3L - protonated form, H2L and HL - partly protonated forms, L - fully deprotonated) with d- and f-electron metal ions were investigated. The studies have been performed in aqueous solution using the potentiometric method with computer analysis of the data, electron paramagnetic resonance, infrared, visible as well as luminescence spectroscopies. The overall stability constants of the complexes were determined. Analysis of the equilibrium constants of the reactions and spectroscopic data has allowed determination of the type of coordination and effectiveness of the carboxyl groups in the process of complex formation. On the basis of potentiometric titration for d-electron were found dimeric and monomeric type of complexes and for f-electron four type of complexes: MHL, ML, ML(OH) and ML(OH)2.
