Deep learning techniques for cancer classification using microarray gene expression data

Cancer is one of the top causes of death globally. Recently, microarray gene expression data has been used to aid in cancer’s effective and early detection. The use of DNA microarray technology to uncover information from the expression levels of thousands of genes has enormous promise. The DNA microarray technique can determine the levels of thousands of genes simultaneously in a single experiment. The analysis of gene expression is critical in many disciplines of biological study to obtain the necessary information. This study analyses all the research studies focused on optimizing gene selection for cancer detection using artificial intelligence. One of the most challenging issues is figuring out how to extract meaningful information from massive databases. Deep Learning architectures have performed efficiently in numerous sectors and are used to diagnose many other chronic diseases and to assist physicians in making medical decisions. In this study, we have evaluated the results of different optimizers on a RNA sequence dataset. The Deep learning algorithm proposed in the study classifies five different forms of cancer, including kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC), Breast Invasive Carcinoma (BRCA), lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), Prostate Adenocarcinoma (PRAD) and Colon Adenocarcinoma (COAD). The performance of different optimizers like Stochastic gradient descent (SGD), Root Mean Squared Propagation (RMSProp), Adaptive Gradient Optimizer (AdaGrad), and Adaptive Momentum (AdaM). The experimental results gathered on the dataset affirm that AdaGrad and Adam. Also, the performance analysis has been done using different learning rates and decay rates. This study discusses current advancements in deep learning-based gene expression data analysis using optimized feature selection methods.

A Highly Discriminative Hybrid Feature Selection Algorithm for Cancer Diagnosis

Cancer is a deadly disease that occurs due to rapid and uncontrolled cell growth. In this article, a machine learning (ML) algorithm is proposed to diagnose different cancer diseases from big data. The algorithm comprises a two-stage hybrid feature selection. In the first stage, an overall ranker is initiated to combine the results of three filter-based feature evaluation methods, namely, chi-squared, F-statistic, and mutual information (MI). The features are then ordered according to this combination. In the second stage, the modified wrapper-based sequential forward selection is utilized to discover the optimal feature subset, using ML models such as support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) classifiers. To examine the proposed algorithm, many tests have been carried out on four cancerous microarray datasets, employing in the process 10-fold cross-validation and hyperparameter tuning. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated by calculating the diagnostic accuracy. The results indicate that for the leukemia dataset, both SVM and KNN models register the highest accuracy at 100% using only 5 features. For the ovarian cancer dataset, the SVM model achieves the highest accuracy at 100% using only 6 features. For the small round blue cell tumor (SRBCT) dataset, the SVM model also achieves the highest accuracy at 100% using only 8 features. For the lung cancer dataset, the SVM model also achieves the highest accuracy at 99.57% using 19 features. By comparing with other algorithms, the results obtained from the proposed algorithm are superior in terms of the number of selected features and diagnostic accuracy.

Red Fox Optimizer with Data-Science-Enabled Microarray Gene Expression Classification Model

Microarray data examination is a relatively new technology that intends to determine the proper treatment for various diseases and a precise medical diagnosis by analyzing a massive number of genes in various experimental conditions. The conventional data classification techniques suffer from overfitting and the high dimensionality of gene expression data. Therefore, the feature (gene) selection approach plays a vital role in handling a high dimensionality of data. Data science concepts can be widely employed in several data classification problems, and they identify different class labels. In this aspect, we developed a novel red fox optimizer with deep-learning-enabled microarray gene expression classification (RFODL-MGEC) model. The presented RFODL-MGEC model aims to improve classification performance by selecting appropriate features. The RFODL-MGEC model uses a novel red fox optimizer (RFO)-based feature selection approach for deriving an optimal subset of features. Moreover, the RFODL-MGEC model involves a bidirectional cascaded deep neural network (BCDNN) for data classification. The parameters involved in the BCDNN technique were tuned using the chaos game optimization (CGO) algorithm. Comprehensive experiments on benchmark datasets indicated that the RFODL-MGEC model accomplished superior results for subtype classifications. Therefore, the RFODL-MGEC model was found to be effective for the identification of various classes for high-dimensional and small-scale microarray data.

A Comparative Study of Meta-Heuristic and Conventional Search in Optimization of Multi-Dimensional Feature Selection

Algorithmic – based search approach is ineffective at addressing the problem of multi-dimensional feature selection for document categorization. This study proposes the use of meta heuristic based search approach for optimal feature selection. Elephant optimization (EO) and Ant Colony optimization (ACO) algorithms coupled with Naïve Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machin (SVM), and J48 classifiers were used to highlight the optimization capability of meta-heuristic search for multi-dimensional feature selection problem in document categorization. In addition, the performance results for feature selection using the two meta-heuristic based approaches (EO and ACO) were compared with conventional Best First Search (BFS) and Greedy Stepwise (GS) algorithms on news document categorization. The comparative results showed that global optimal feature subsets were attained using adaptive parameters tuning in meta-heuristic based feature selection optimization scheme. In addition, the selected number of feature subsets were minimized dramatically for document classification.
