Constitutive Modeling of Mechanical Behaviors of Carbon-Based CNTs and GSs, and Their Sensing Applications as Nanomechanical Resonators: A Review

Carbon-based nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene sheets (GSs), have garnered considerable research attention owing to their unique mechanical, physical, and chemical properties compared with traditional materials. Nanosensors are sensing devices with sensing elements made of nanomaterials or nanostructures. CNT- and GS-based nanomaterials have been proved to be very sensitive nanosensing elements, being used to detect tiny mass and force. In this study, we review the developments in the analytical modeling of mechanical behavior of CNTs and GSs, and their potential applications as next-generation nanosensing elements. Subsequently, we discuss the contributions of various simulation studies on theoretical models, calculation methods, and mechanical performance analyses. In particular, this review intends to provide a theoretical framework for a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical properties and potential applications of CNTs/GSs nanomaterials as demonstrated by modeling and simulation methods. According to analytical modeling, nonlocal continuum mechanics pose small-scale structural effects in nanomaterials. Thus, we overviewed a few representative studies on the mechanical behavior of nanomaterials to inspire the future development of nanomaterial-based sensors or devices. In summary, nanomaterials, such as CNTs and GSs, can be effectively utilized for ultrahigh-sensitivity measurements at a nanolevel resolution compared to traditional materials.

Static and Free Vibration Analyses of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT)–Substrate Medium Systems

This paper proposes a novel nanobar–substrate medium model for static and free vibration analyses of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) systems embedded in the elastic substrate medium. The modified strain-gradient elasticity theory is utilized to account for the material small-scale effect, while the Gurtin–Murdoch surface theory is employed to represent the surface energy effect. The Winkler foundation model is assigned to consider the interactive mechanism between the nanobar and its surrounding substrate medium. Hamilton’s principle is used to consistently derive the system governing equation, initial conditions, and classical as well as non-classical boundary conditions. Two numerical simulations are employed to demonstrate the essence of the material small-scale effect, the surface energy effect, and the surrounding substrate medium on static and free vibration responses of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)–substrate medium systems. The simulation results show that the material small-scale effect, the surface energy effect, and the interaction between the substrate and the structure led to a system-stiffness enhancement both in static and free vibration analyses.

Strain-Gradient Bar-Elastic Substrate Model with Surface-Energy Effect: Virtual-Force Approach

This paper presents an alternative approach to formulating a rational bar-elastic substrate model with inclusion of small-scale and surface-energy effects. The thermodynamics-based strain gradient model is utilized to account for the small-scale effect (nonlocality) of the bar-bulk material while the Gurtin–Murdoch surface theory is adopted to capture the surface-energy effect. To consider the bar-surrounding substrate interactive mechanism, the Winkler foundation model is called for. The governing differential compatibility equation as well as the consistent end-boundary compatibility conditions are revealed using the virtual force principle and form the core of the model formulation. Within the framework of the virtual force principle, the axial force field serves as the fundamental solution to the governing differential compatibility equation. The problem of a nanowire embedded in an elastic substrate medium is employed as a numerical example to show the accuracy of the proposed bar-elastic substrate model and advantage over its counterpart displacement model. The influences of material nonlocality on both global and local responses are thoroughly discussed in this example.

Analysis of the Vibration Behaviors of Rotating Composite Nano-Annular Plates Based on Nonlocal Theory and Different Plate Theories

Rotating machinery has significant applications in the fields of micro and nano meters, such as nano-turbines, nano-motors, and biomolecular motors, etc. This paper takes rotating nano-annular plates as the research object to analyze their free vibration behaviors. Firstly, based on Kirchhoff plate theory, Mindlin plate theory, and Reddy plate theory, combined with nonlocal constitutive relations, the differential motion equations of rotating functionally graded nano-annular plates in a thermal environment are derived. Subsequently, the numerical method is used to discretize and solve the motion equations. The effects of nonlocal parameter, temperature change, inner and outer radius ratio, and rotational velocity on the vibration frequencies of the nano-annular plates are analyzed through numerical examples. Finally, the relationship between the fundamental frequencies and the thickness-to-radius ratio of the nano-annular plates of clamped inner and outer rings is discussed, and the differences in the calculation results among the three plate theories are compared.

New analytic bending, buckling, and free vibration solutions of rectangular nanoplates by the symplectic superposition method

New analytic bending, buckling, and free vibration solutions of rectangular nanoplates with combinations of clamped and simply supported edges are obtained by an up-to-date symplectic superposition method. The problems are reformulated in the Hamiltonian system and symplectic space, where the mathematical solution framework involves the construction of symplectic eigenvalue problems and symplectic eigen expansion. The analytic symplectic solutions are derived for several elaborated fundamental subproblems, the superposition of which yields the final analytic solutions. Besides Lévy-type solutions, non-Lévy-type solutions are also obtained, which cannot be achieved by conventional analytic methods. Comprehensive numerical results can provide benchmarks for other solution methods.
