Antiglycation and antioxidant activities of the crude extract and saponin fraction of Tribulus terrestris before and after microcapsule release

Fabrication, Characterization, and Biological Evaluation of T. terrestris Incorporated Titanium-Doped ZnO/Cellulose Nanocomposite Films as a Therapeutic Hemostatic Scaffolds for Diabetic Wound Healing

The advent of biobased materials exhibiting remarkable effectiveness and performance has ushered in a paradigm shift in the field of biomedical science. Polymers are often used in the medical sector, particularly in the regeneration of bones, tissues, and wounds. Fast wound healing and self-healing polymers created from sustainable surroundings are attractive alternatives to create demand for new pathways in polymer research. This study investigates the efficacy of a biowaste-derived polymer, which was extracted and supplemented with titanium-doped ZnO nanoparticles along with medication in the form of an extract to evaluate its effectiveness in promoting wound healing. The prepared materials were further characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), tensile, and its color parameters. In vitro studies on wound healing were also conducted. The results clearly showed that the produced substance possesses properties that are noteworthy for wound healing.

Research progress on the prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia by medicinal and edible plants and its bioactive components

Hyperuricemia is another common metabolic disease, which is considered to be closely related to the development of many chronic diseases, in addition to the "three highs." Currently, although drugs show positive therapeutic effects, they have been shown to produce side effects that can damage the body. There is growing evidence that medicinal and edible plants and their bioactive components have a significant effect on hyperuricemia. In this paper, we review common medicinal and edible plants with uric acid-lowering effects and summarize the uric acid-lowering mechanisms of different bioactive components. Specifically, the bioactive components are divided into five categories: flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, polysaccharides, and saponins. These active substances exhibit positive uric acid-lowering effects by inhibiting uric acid production, promoting uric acid excretion, and improving inflammation. Overall, this review examines the potential role of medicinal and edible plants and their bioactive components as a means of combating hyperuricemia, with the hope of providing some reference value for the treatment of hyperuricemia.

Anti-methicillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus and in vitro toxicology evaluation of corilagin-loaded gelatin/agar microspheres with potential biotextile applications

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has emerged since the early 1960s. The increasing resistance of pathogens to currently used antibiotics requires the urgent discovery of new antimicrobials effective in combating drug-resistant bacteria. From past to present, medicinal plants are useful to cure human diseases. Corilagin (β-1-O-galloyl-3,6-(R)-hexahydroxydiphenoyl-d-glucose), commonly found in Phyllanthus species, exerts potentiating effect on β-lactams against MRSA. However, its biological effect may not be fully utilized. Therefore, incorporating microencapsulation technology with the delivery of corilagin would be more effective in utilizing the potential effect on biomedical applications. This work reports the development of a safe micro-particulate system which combined agar with gelatin as wall matrix materials for topical delivery of corilagin in order to eliminate the potential toxicity of the crosslinker formaldehyde. The optimal parameters for microsphere preparation were identified and the particle size of optimal microspheres was 20.11 μm ± 3.58. Antibacterial studies revealed that micro-trapped corilagin (minimum bactericidal concentration, MBC = 0.5 mg/mL) possessed a higher potency against MRSA than free corilagin (MBC = 1 mg/mL). The in vitro skin cytotoxicity showed the safety of the corilagin-loaded microspheres for topical applications, with approximately 90 % of HaCaT cell viability. Our results demonstrated the potential of corilagin-loaded gelatin/agar microspheres for the applicable bio-textile products to treat drug-resistant bacterial infections.

In vitro evaluation of immunomodulatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-cancer molecular mechanisms of Tribulus terrestris extracts

Dampened immunity and impaired wound healing in diabetic patients may lead to diabetic foot ulcer disease, which is the leading cause of limb amputations and hospitalization. On the other hand, cancer is the most significant cause of mortality globally, accounting for over 10 million fatalities in 2020, or nearly one in every six deaths. Plants and herbs have been used to treat chronic diseases due to their essential pharmaceutical attributes, such as mitigating drug resistance, ameliorating systemic toxicities, reducing the need for synthetic chemotherapeutic agents,and strengthening the immune system. The present study has been designed to evaluate the effects of Tribulus terrestris on wound healing, cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory responses against HepG-2 liver cancer cell line. Two solvents (methanol and ethanol) were used for root extraction of T. terrestris. The wound healing potential of the extracts was studied on diabetic cell culture line by scratch assay. The anti-oxidant and cytotoxic potentials were evaluated by in vitro assays against HepG2 cell line. The methanolic root extract resulted in the coverage of robust radical scavenging or maximum inhibition of 66.72%,potent cytotoxic activity or reduced cell viability of 40.98%, and anti-diabetic activity having mighty α-glucosidase inhibition of 50.16% at a concentration of 80 μg/ml. Significant reduction in the levels of LDH leakage (56.38%), substantial ROS (48.45%) and SOD (72.13%) activities were recorededMoreover, gene expression analysis demonstrated the down-regulation of inflammatory markers (TNF-α, MMP-9, Bcl-2, and AFP) in HepG-2 cells when treated with T. terresteris methanolic extract as compared to stress. Furthermore, the down-regulation of inflammatory markers was validated through ELISA-mediated protein estimation of IL-1β and TNF-α. It is expected that this study will lay a foundation and lead to the development of efficient but low-cost, natural herbs extract-based dressing/ointment for diabetic patients and identify potential drug metabolites to treat out-of-whack inflammatory responses involved in cancer onset, progression, and metastasis.
