Abstract
Drug-induced liver injury is one of the main challenges that leads to the withdrawal of several drugs in the clinical setting. Cyclosporine is one of the drugs that its long-term administration exerts devastating effects on the hepatocytes. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of ferulic acid, a natural compound found in plants, on cyclosporine-mediated hepatotoxicity. Forty-eight male Wistar rats were treated with cyclosporine and/or ferulic acid to evaluate the function as well as the morphology of liver cells. We found that ferulic acid dose-dependently recovered the functional as well as histopathological parameters of liver cells, as revealed by the improvement of hepatocellular vacuolation, portal fibroplasia, and necrosis. Moreover, this phenolic compound was able to restore the balance of the redox system in cyclosporine-treated rats by activating the nuclear factor (NF) erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) signaling axis. Of note, the protective effects of ferulic acid against cyclosporine-mediated liver toxicity were not restricted only to induction of the potential antioxidant property, as in the presence of this agent, the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as NF-κB, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin-1β was also diminished. Ferulic acid also shifted the equilibrium between the expression levels of proapoptotic to antiapoptotic proteins and thereby prevented the development of cyclosporine-induced liver injury. Overall, these findings highlighted that ferulic acid can reduce cyclosporine-induced liver injury due to its antioxidant properties.

Abstract
Synthetic bone grafting materials play a significant role in various medical applications involving bone regeneration and repair. Their ability to mimic the properties of natural bone and promote the healing process has contributed to their growing relevance. While calcium-phosphates and their composites with various polymers and biopolymers are widely used in clinical and experimental research, the diverse range of available polymer-based materials poses challenges in selecting the most suitable grafts for successful bone repair. This review aims to address the fundamental issues of bone biology and regeneration while providing a clear perspective on the principles guiding the development of synthetic materials. In this study, we delve into the basic principles underlying the creation of synthetic bone composites and explore the mechanisms of formation for biologically important complexes and structures associated with the various constituent parts of these materials. Additionally, we offer comprehensive information on the application of biologically active substances to enhance the properties and bioactivity of synthetic bone grafting materials. By presenting these insights, our review enables a deeper understanding of the regeneration processes facilitated by the application of synthetic bone composites.

Abstract
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a natural feed and food contaminant classified as a group I carcinogen for humans. In the dairy industry, AFB1 and its derivative, AFM1, are of concern for the related economic losses and their possible presence in milk and dairy food products. Among its toxic effects, AFB1 can cause oxidative stress. Thus, dietary supplementation with natural antioxidants has been considered among the strategies to mitigate AFB1 presence and its toxicity. Here, the protective role of resveratrol (R) has been investigated in a foetal bovine hepatocyte cell line (BFH12) exposed to AFB1, by measuring cytotoxicity, transcriptional changes (RNA sequencing), and targeted post-transcriptional modifications (lipid peroxidation, NQO1 and CYP3A enzymatic activity). Resveratrol reversed the AFB1-dependent cytotoxicity. As for gene expression, when administered alone, R induced neglectable changes in BFH12 cells. Conversely, when comparing AFB1-exposed cells with those co-incubated with R+AFB1, greater transcriptional variations were observed (i.e., 840 DEGs). Functional analyses revealed that several significant genes were involved in lipid biosynthesis, response to external stimulus, drug metabolism, and inflammatory response. As for NQO1 and CYP3A activities and lipid peroxidation, R significantly reverted variations induced by AFB1, mostly corroborating and/or completing transcriptional data. Outcomes of the present study provide new knowledge about key molecular mechanisms involved in R antioxidant-mediated protection against AFB1 toxicity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Investigate the impact of resveratrol (RESV) on peri-implant repair and its effect on bone-related markers in rats with induced diabetes mellitus (DM). MATERIAL AND METHODS Ninety rats were divided into: DM + RESV (n = 18); DM + placebo (PLAC) (n = 18); DM + insulin (INS) (n = 18); DM + RESV + INS (n = 18); Non-DM (n = 18). Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin. One screw-shaped titanium implant was inserted in each tibiae of animals. Treatments were administered during 30 days. After, one of the implants was removed for counter-torque and the peri-implant tissue was collected for mRNA quantification of BMP-2, OPN, Runx2, Lrp-5, Osx, β-catenin, Dkk1, OPG, and RANKL by Real-time PCR. The other tibia was submitted to MicroCT analysis to measure: bone volume (BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) and bone-implant contact (BIC). RESULTS Higher counter-torque values were observed for implant removal in DM + RESV, DM + RESV + INS and Non-DM groups when compared to DM + PLAC (p < .05). Augmented Tb.Th was observed in DM + RESV and Non-DM when compared to DM + PLAC group (p < .05), whereas higher BIC was detected in DM + RESV, DM + RESV + INS and Non-DM animals when compared to DM + PLAC (p < .05). Levels of RANKL were downregulated by the RESV and/or INS therapy, whereas only the association of RESV and INS upregulated the levels of Runx2 (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS The therapy with RESV may favour peri-implant bone repair improving bone formation around implants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To critically appraise available literature concerning the effect of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive (CTA) in postoperative palatal pain management. MATERIALS AND METHODS Electronic databases (Cochrane, PubMed, LILACS, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched, complemented with grey literature databases up to June 2020. Studies reporting the effect of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive compared to any other methods in postoperative palatal pain management were considered eligible. The risk of bias among and across included studies was assessed. RESULTS Finally, four studies were considered eligible. Regarding free gingival graft (FGG), cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive with hemostatic sponge promoted less postoperative pain (PP) and analgesic consumption (AC). Also, cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive with platelet-rich fibrin produced less PP and more wound healing at the palatal area than cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive and wet gauze. Additionally, cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive promoted less PP and AC than wet gauze and suture. Concerning connective tissue graft (CTG), cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive, and suture produced similar PP, AC, and willingness for retreatment. CONCLUSIONS Based on the low certainty level, cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive appears to promote less PP and AC than wet gauze and suture regarding FGG. Additionally, cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive appears to increase the effect of hemostatic sponge, contributing to the reduction of PP and AC. Regarding CTG, cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive appears to promote similar PP, AC, and willingness for retreatment than the suture. Therefore, cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive has shown promising usefulness for PP management in FGG, but not a clear benefit for CTG. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The adoption of different agents for the protection of the palatal donor site following gingival harvesting procedures may provide better comfort to the patient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major health problem predisposing to cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) on both the arterial wall of diabetic rats and the adrenomedullin (ADM) gene expression. METHODS Twenty-four Wistar Albino rats were divided into three groups as Control, DM + S, and DM + ALA. For DM model, a single dose of 40 mg/kg streptozotocin, for DM + ALA group, 100 mg/kg/day/4 weeks was administered. Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) staining was done and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was detected by immunohistochemical analysis in the artery wall. Total damage score of vessel wall (endothelial cell damage, media layer smooth muscle cell damage, and internal elastic lamina damage) and H score (immunoreactivity intensity) were calculated. Expression of ADM gene was measured by qRT-PCR. RESULTS In DM + S group, Total damage score of vessel wall were detected by light microscopy. There were statistically significant differences between the groups Control/DM + S and DM + S/DM + ALA in terms of the vessel total damage score and H score (p < 0.005). ADM expression was increased threefold in both DM + S and DM + ALA groups compared to the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS ALA may have positive effect on the vessel damage in diabetic rats. However, no significant decrease in ADM expression levels was observed in diabetic rats after ALA administration and we considered that the protective effect of ALA is independent of adrenomedullin. Further studies with different doses and durations of ALA administrations are required to investigate the changes in ADM expression.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the influence of cyclosporine administration on the repair of critical-sized calvaria defects (CSDs) in rat calvaria filled with diverse biomaterials. Sixty animals were divided into two groups: the control (CTR) group (saline solution) and the cyclosporine (CCP) group (cyclosporine, 10 mg/kg/day). These medications were administered daily by gavage, beginning 15 days before the surgical procedure and lasting until the day the animals were euthanized. A CSD (5 mm Ø) was made in the calvaria of each animal, which was allocated to one of 3 subgroups, according to the biomaterial used to fill the defect: coagulum (COA), deproteinized bovine bone (DBB), or biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics of hydroxyapatite and β-phosphate tricalcium (HA/TCP). Euthanasia of the animals was performed 15 and 60 days after the surgical procedure (n = 5 animals/period/subgroup). Bone repair (formation) assessment was performed through microtomography and histometry, while the analyses of the expression of the BMP2, Osteocalcin, and TGFβ1 proteins were performed using immunohistochemistry. The CSDs not filled with biomaterials demonstrated lower bone formation in the CCP group. At 15 days, less bone formation was observed in the CSDs filled with DBB, a smaller volume of mineralized tissue was observed in the CSDs filled with HA/TCP, and the expression levels of BMP2 and osteocalcin were lower in the CCP group compared to the CTR group. The use of cyclosporine impaired bone repair in CSD, and this effect can be partially explained by the suppression of BMP2 and osteocalcin expression.

Abstract
The natural polyphenol Resveratrol (RSV) claims numerous positive effects on health due to the well documented biological effects demonstrating its potential as a disease-preventing agent and as adjuvant for treatment of a wide variety of chronic diseases. Since several studies, both in vitro and in vivo, have highlighted the protective bone aptitude of RSV both as promoter of osteoblasts’ proliferation and antagonist of osteoclasts’ differentiation, they could be interesting in view of applications in the field of dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. This review has brought together experimental findings on the use of RSV in the regeneration of bone tissue comprising also its application associated with scaffolds and non-transfusional hemocomponents.
