Structural modifications in Au/Al2O3–CeO2 mixed oxides as a function of Ce4+ content and its effects in the mineralization of the herbicide diuron

Effect of the Metal Deposition Order on Structural, Electronic and Catalytic Properties of TiO2-Supported Bimetallic Au-Ag Catalysts in 1-Octanol Selective Oxidation

Au and Ag were deposited on TiO2 modified with Ce, La, Fe or Mg in order to obtain bimetallic catalysts to be used for liquid-phase oxidation of 1-octanol. The effects of the deposition order of gold and silver, and the nature of the support modifying additives and redox pretreatments on the catalytic properties of the bimetallic Au-Ag catalysts were studied. Catalysts were characterized by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption–desorption, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. It was found that pretreatments with hydrogen and oxygen at 300 °C significantly decreased the activity of AuAg catalysts (silver was deposited first) and had little effect on the catalytic properties of AgAu samples (gold was deposited first). The density functional theory method demonstrated that the adsorption energy of 1-octanol increased for all positively charged AuxAgyq (x + y = 10, with a charge of q = 0 or +1) clusters compared with the neutral counterparts. Lanthanum oxide was a very effective promoter for both monometallic and bimetallic gold and silver catalysts in the studied process.

The Application of Copper-Gold Catalysts in the Selective Oxidation of Glycerol at Acid and Basic Conditions

The crude glycerol is produced during the transesterification of animal fats and vegetable oils, but it is a by-product of this process. Currently, its elimination is a problem in the chemical industry. The main goal of this work was the preparation, characterization and application of mesoporous cerium-zirconium oxide as supports for copper and gold species and the comparison of selected factors on the properties of catalysts in glycerol oxidation in the liquid phase. The samples were characterized using adsorption and desorption of nitrogen, XRD, UV-vis, XPS, TEM, SEM, and STEM-EDXS. The obtained results of glycerol oxidation show that the bimetallic copper-gold catalysts are more active and selective to glyceric acid in this reaction than analogous monometallic gold catalysts. Additionally, bimetallic catalysts are also characterized by the catalytic stability, and their application leads to the increase of selectivity to glyceric acid during their reusing in glycerol oxidation in alkali media. In this work, the influence of selected factors, e.g., oxygen source and its pressure, solution pH, and base content on the catalytic activity of bimetallic catalysts is discussed.

Visible-light photoelectrodegradation of diuron on WO3 nanostructures

The degradation of pesticide diuron has been explored by photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) under visible light illumination using two different WO₃ nanostructures, obtained by anodization of tungsten. The highest degradation efficiency (73%) was obtained for WO₃ nanosheets synthesized in the presence of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide (0.05 M). For that nanostructure, the kinetic coefficient for diuron degradation was 133% higher than that for the other nanostructure (anodized in the presence of fluoride anions). These results have been explained by taking into account the different architecture and dimensions of the two WO₃ nanostructures under study.
