Routes to visible light active C-doped TiO2 photocatalysts using carbon atoms from the Ti precursors

Graphite-bridged indirect Z-scheme system TiO2-C-BiVO4 film with enhanced photoelectrocatalytic activity towards serial bisphenols

Due to the increase in the occurrence of bisphenols (BPs) in the environments, it is urgent to develop efficient and ecofriendly methods for their removal. A novel, indirect Z-scheme TiO₂-C-BiVO₄ film was prepared by a sol-gel method combined with hydrothermal carbonization. The doped graphite carbon was generated in situ from glucose, which acted as an electron-transfer bridge for the Z-scheme system to enhance the heterojunction tightness between TiO₂ and BiVO₄. This resulted in an increasing separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes and a stronger redox ability of the TiO₂-C-BiVO₄ film for the degradation and detoxification of BPs. The degradation efficiency of BPs was over 95% in 240 min, except for that of 4,4'-sulphonyldiphenol (BPS) due to the presence of the OSO group, and all of the BPs were nearly completely mineralized when the reaction time reached 360 min. Consequently, the inhibition ratio towards Vibrio fischeri decreased significantly along with the loss and mineralization of aromatic intermediates during photoelectrocatalytic degradation. 2,2-bis(4-Hydroxyphenyl) butane (BPB), 4,4'-(1-phenylethylidene)-bisphenol (BPAP), and (4,4'-hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenol (BPAF), with relatively high toxicity levels and lipophilicity and as toxic product precursors, require attention in terms of environmental safety. Overall, this work provides a promising and environmentally friendly way to remove BPs from water.

Complementary behavior of doping and loading in Ag/C-ZnTa2O6 for efficient visible-light photocatalytic redox towards broad wastewater remediation

This work reports on the simple fabrication of a silver loaded and carbon doped zinc tantalate (Ag/C-ZnTa₂O₆) photocatalyst with visible light photocatalytic activity toward broad wastewater remediation, including high photo-reduction of Cr(vi) (98.4% in 210 min), excellent photo-oxidation of tetracycline hydrochloride (94.7% in 210 min), and superior photo-degradation of multiple dyes (>99.0% within 210 min). The optimal photocatalytic performance of Ag/C-ZnTa₂O₆ is mainly due to the excellent visible light absorption capacity and superior electron-hole separation efficiency, which is ascribed to the complementary behavior between carbon doping and silver loading. Particularly, the generation of defects due to C-doping is greatly inhibited by Ag-loading, and the SPR effect of Ag nanoparticles is enhanced due to the obstruction of Ag⁺ by C doping.

Recent Development of Photocatalysts Containing Carbon Species: A Review

Undoubtedly, carbon-based (nano)composites can be promising photocatalysts with improved photocatalytic activity due to the coupling effect from the incorporation of carbon species. In this mini-review, we focus on the recent development of photocatalysts based on carbon-based (nano)composites. TiO2 is well-known as a typical photocatalyst. Special attention is paid to the various types of carbon–TiO2 composites such as C-doped TiO2, N–C-doped TiO2, metal–C-doped TiO2, and other co-doped C/TiO2 composites. Various synthetic strategies including the solvothermal/hydrothermal method, sol–gel method, and template-directed method are reviewed for the preparation of carbon-based TiO2 composites. C/graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) composites and ternary C-doped composites are also summarized and ascribed to the unique electronic structure of g-C3N4 and the synergistic effect of the ternary interfaces, respectively. In the end, we put forward the future perspective of the photocatalysts containing carbon species based on our knowledge.

Deposition of Visible Light-Active C-Doped Titania Films via Magnetron Sputtering Using CO₂ as a Source of Carbon

Doping of titanium dioxide with p-block elements is typically described as an efficient pathway for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. However, the properties of the doped titania films depend greatly on the production method, source of doping, type of substrate, etc. The present work describes the use of pulsed direct current (pDC) magnetron sputtering for the deposition of carbon-doped titania coatings, using CO₂ as the source of carbon; ratios of O₂/CO₂ were varied through variations of CO₂ flow rates and oxygen flow control setpoints. Additionally, undoped Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) coatings were prepared under identical deposition conditions for comparison purposes. Coatings were post-deposition annealed at 873 K and analysed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffreaction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic properties of the thin films were evaluated under ultraviolet (UV) and visible light irradiation using methylene blue and stearic acid decomposition tests. Photoinduced hydrophilicity was assessed through measurements of the water contact angle under UV and visible light irradiation. It was found that, though C-doping resulted in improved dye degradation compared to undoped TiO₂, the UV-induced photoactivity of Carbon-doped (C-doped) photocatalysts was lower for both model pollutants used.

Kinetics stabilized doping: computational optimization of carbon-doped anatase TiO2 for visible-light driven water splitting

Carbon dimers exhibiting strong C–C binding could be ideal kinetics-stabilized dopants enhancing the visible-light activity of TiO₂ for photocatalysis.
