Abstract
Semiconductor heterojunctions are an effective way to achieve efficient photocatalysts, as they can provide an adequate redox potential with visible light excitation. Several works have reported synergistic effects with nanoparticle semiconductor materials. The question is still open for thin film heterojunctions formed by stacked layers, as photocatalysis is considered a surface phenomenon. To investigate if the internal layer really affects or modifies the photocatalytic properties of the external material, we analyze the thin film heterojunction with ZnO and Bi2O3 semiconductors deposited by spray pyrolysis in two configurations: substrate/ZnO/Bi2O3 and substrate/Bi2O3/ZnO. Microstructural analysis was performed to verify the formation of the physical junction of the materials and discard new ternary phases. The photocatalytic activity was analyzed as a function of the thickness of the layers under blue light irradiation. We determined the conduction and valence bands positions, the carrier concentrations, mobilities, Fermi levels, etc. that allowed us to distinguish two reaction mechanisms depending on the configuration. There is a strong compromise between the order and thickness of the layers with the photocatalytic activity. The internal electric field produced in the interface defines the route of the photogenerated charges, and therefore the photocatalytic response. Thus, well-designed thin film heterojunctions can indeed improve the photocatalytic activity of the surface layer.

Abstract
Photocatalytic degradation is a valuable direction for eliminating organic pollutants in the environment because of its exceptional catalytic activity and low energy requirements. As one of the prospective photocatalysts, zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) is a promising candidate for photoactivity due to its favorable redox potential and higher chemical stability. ZrO2 has a high rate of electron-hole recombination and poor light-harvesting capabilities. Still, modification has demonstrated enhancements, especially extra-modification, and is therefore worthy of investigation. This present review provides a comprehensive overview of the extra-modifications of ZrO2 for enhanced photocatalytic performance, including coupling with other semiconductors, doping with metal, non-metal, and co-doping with metal and non-metal. The extra-modified ZrO2 showed superior performance in degrading the organic pollutant, particularly dyes and phenolic compounds. Interestingly, this review also briefly highlighted the probable mechanisms of the extra-modification of ZrO2 such as p-n heterojunction, type II heterojunction, and Z-scheme heterojunction. The latter heterojunction with excellent electron-hole space separation improved the photoactivity. Extensive research on ZrO2's photocatalytic potential is presented, including the removal of heavy metals, the redox of heavy metals and organic pollutants, and the evolution of hydrogen. Modified ZrO2's photocatalytic effectiveness depends on its band position, oxygen vacancy concentration, and metal defect sites. The opportunities and future problems of the extra-modified ZrO2 photocatalyst are also discussed. This review aims to share knowledge regarding extra-modified ZrO2 photocatalysts and inspire new environmental remediation applications.

Abstract
The present research reports the synthesis of ZrO2-doped TiO2 photocatalysts at different ZrO2 contents (1, 3 and 5% wt.) synthesized by the sol–gel method. The samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet–visible, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and N2 adsorption–desorption analysis. The photocatalytic activity of the ZrO2-doped TiO2 was investigated against the dyes methyl orange and rhodamine B through mineralization studies. The ZrO2-doped TiO2 samples presented a semiglobular-ovoid agglomerate shape around 500–800 nm. The samples presented high crystallinity of the TiO2 anatase phase, XPS suggested the formation of Zr–O–Ti bonds and the samples were classified as mesoporous materials with slight changes in the optical features in comparison with pure TiO2. Our study shows that the ZrO2-doped TiO2 composites exhibited a higher photocatalytic activity than just utilizing the synthetized TiO2 and a commercial P25. The different degradation behaviors are attributed to differences in the textural properties, and to the different optical absorptions of the samples due to structural defects created by the level of doping of Zr4+ ions into the TiO2 lattice. Reaction kinetics parameters were calculated by the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, and a third run cycle of the ZrO2-doped TiO2 at 1% wt. achieved a photocatalytic degradation of 78.1 and 75.5% for RhB and MO, respectively.

Abstract
Nanocomposites with different ratios of titanium dioxide and bismuth vanadate [TiO2]/[BiVO4] give rise to compatible electronic band structure alignment at their interfaces to ensure enhanced photoactivated charge transfer under visible light. The sol–gel method and suitable post-synthesis thermal treatments were used to synthesize different compositions with stabilized anatase phase of TiO2 and monoclinic scheelite polymorph BiVO4. Structural, electronic and optical characterizations were performed and the results were analysed as a function of the stoichiometry, in which both crystalline structures show a clear junction formation among their characteristic stacking planes. Photocatalytic and (photo) electrochemical responses of the nanocomposites were investigated and tested for the degradation of azo dyes (Acid Blue-113, AB-113) (~ 99%) under visible light radiation. The nanocomposite with a mass ratio of (1:10) shows the highest photocatalytic efficiency compared to the other compositions. HRTEM images showed marked regions in which both crystalline structures form a clear junction and their characteristic planes. However, the increase of BiVO4 content in the network overcomes the photocatalytic activity due to the decrease in the reduction potential of the photo-generated electrons with high recombination rates.

Abstract
Photocatalytic degradation is considered as a promising strategy to address the environmental threat caused by antibiotics abuse. Visible light driven g-C3N4 decorated ZrO2-x nanotubes heterostructure photocatalysts for antibiotic degradation were successfully synthesized by anodic oxidation and following a thermal vapor deposition method. Compared with pure g-C3N4 or ZrO2-x nanotubes, the composite photocatalysts exhibited more extended visible light response and higher separation rate of photo-generated electron-holes pairs. The optimized heteroctructure with 7.1 wt.% g-C3N4 exhibited 90.6% degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-H) under 1 h visible light irradiation. The mainly active species of TC-H degradation were photo-generated h+ and O2-. The pathway of charge migration in the g-C3N4/ZrO2-x NTs system was also studied and a possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed for TC-H degradation. Constructing the g-C3N4/ZrO2-x nanotubes heterostructure is anticipated to be an effective strategy for photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics.

Abstract
Photodynamic and immune therapies are innovative medical strategies against cancer, and their integration with upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) can improve the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The UCNPs convert the deep penetrating near-infrared (NIR) light into higher energy emissions, allowing the imaging and detection of malignant cells and the simultaneous energy transfer for activation of the photosensitizers. In this work, the UCNPs were coated with a photocatalytic TiO2/ZrO2 shell and an increase of oxygen defects (VO) was observed as a result of the partial substitution of Ti4+ by Zr4+ ions in the crystalline lattice of TiO2. Such defects act as trapping states improving charge separation and then reducing the recombination rate of the electron-hole pairs (e-/h+) generated upon resonant energy transfer from the donor (UCNPs) to acceptors (shell). The overall results are the enhancement of both ROS production and the emission band centered at 801 nm which is useful for tracking cells at the deep tissue level. However, an excess of those defects produces deleterious effects on both processes as a result of charge migration. The specificity against HER2 positive breast cancer was provided by bioconjugation with the monoclonal antibody trastuzumab. After administration of the synthesized NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2/ZrO2-trastuzumab theranostic nanocomplex doped with an optimal ZrO2 molar concentration (25%) and subsequent exposure to 975 nm light (0.71 W cm-2) during 5 minutes, HER2-positive SKBr3 breast cancer cells were suppressed with 88% drop of the cell viability, 28% higher than UCNPs decorated with a pure TiO2 shell.

Abstract
Bi₄Ti₃O12 square plates were synthesized via a hydrothermal route, and their growth process was systematically investigated. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared using glucose as the carbon source, which were then assembled on the surface of Bi₄Ti₃O12 square plates via a hydrothermal route with the aim of enhancing the photocatalytic performance. XRD (X-ray powder diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), UV-vis DRS (diffuse reflectance spectroscopy), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), PL (photoluminescence) spectroscopy, EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and photocurrent spectroscopy were used to systematically characterize the as-prepared samples. It is demonstrated that the decoration of CQDs on Bi₄Ti₃O12 plates leads to an increased visible light absorption, slightly increased bandgap, increased photocurrent density, decreased charge-transfer resistance, and decreased PL intensity. Simulated sunlight and visible light were separately used as a light source to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the samples toward the degradation of RhB in aqueous solution. Under both simulated sunlight and visible light irradiation, CQDs@Bi₄Ti₃O12 composites with an appropriate amount of CQDs exhibit obviously enhanced photocatalytic performance. However, the decoration of excessive CQDs gives rise to a decrease in the photocatalytic activity. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of CQDs-modified Bi₄Ti₃O12 can be attributed to the following reasons: (1) The electron transfer between Bi₄Ti₃O12 and CQDs promotes an efficient separation of photogenerated electron/hole pairs in Bi₄Ti₃O12; (2) the up-conversion photoluminescence emitted from CQDs could induce the generation of additional electron/hole pairs in Bi₄Ti₃O12; and (3) the photoexcited electrons in CQDs could participate in the photocatalytic reactions.

Abstract
Titanium oxide nanotubes (TNTs) were anodically grown in ethylene glycol electrolyte. The influence of the anodization time on their physicochemical and photoelectrochemical properties was evaluated. Concomitant with the anodization time, the NT length, fluorine content, and capacitance of the space charge region increased, affecting the opto-electronic properties (bandgap, bathochromic shift, band-edge position) and surface hydrophilicity of TiO2 NTs. These properties are at the origin of the photocatalytic activity (PCA), as proved with the photooxidation of methylene blue.
