Abstract
BACKGROUND While illicit substances are commonly involved in the overdose crisis, prescription substances still play a role. Oftentimes, decedents do not have prescriptions for these substances at the time of death. As such, we sought to examine the prevalence of nonmedical drug use in Tennessee through linkage of fatal drug overdose and prescription data. METHODS We used State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS) data to identify fatal drug overdoses in Tennessee from 2019 to 2022. Deaths were linked to Controlled Substances Monitoring Program data deterministically using name and date of birth. Nonmedical use was defined as a decedent having a prescription substance on toxicology but not having an active prescription for that substance at the time of death. Descriptive statistics were performed to assess prevalence overall and examine differences between drug classes. RESULTS We identified 7,281 SUDORS deaths from January 2019-2022 with complete toxicology that were able to be linked to prescription data. The median age of decedents was 40 years with 34.2% female and 65.8% males. Prevalence of nonmedical use differed for each category, 1,263(17.3%) for nonmedical opioid use, 1,216(16.7%) for nonmedical benzodiazepine use, 436 (6.0%) for nonmedical gabapentin use, and 152 (2.1%) for nonmedical stimulant use. Overtime, nonmedical use of opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants has decreased. CONCLUSION Through linkage of fatal overdose and prescription data, we found the prevalence of nonmedical use to be 33% in Tennessee. Increasing education on the dangers of nonmedical use, the importance of safe drug disposal, storage, and only using medications as prescribed is encouraged to reduce improper use as the drug landscape continues to shift.

Abstract
Objective: The present study identified common motives for nonmedical use of prescription stimulants (NMUS) among community college (CC) students and examined behavioral and demographic correlates of certain motives. Participants: The survey was completed by 3,113 CC students (72.4% female; 81.7% White). Methods: Survey results from 10 CCs were evaluated. Results: NMUS was reported by 9% (n = 269) participants. The most common motive for NMUS was to "focus on studies or to improve academic performance" (67.5%) followed by to "have more energy" (52.4%). Females were more likely to report NMUS for weight loss, and males were more likely to report NMUS to experiment. The motive "to feel good or get high" was linked to polysubstance use. Conclusions: CC students report similar motives for NMUS to those commonly endorsed by 4-year university students. These findings may help identify CC students susceptible to risky substance use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Early-life adversities are known to alter drug reward processing in rodents. Despite the well-known link between early adversity and the risk of substance use disorder, few studies have measured how childhood adversity affects human drug reward. Here, we assessed the relationship between historical childhood adversities and responses to single doses of methamphetamine, d-amphetamine or buprenorphine in healthy participants. METHODS Using a secondary analysis approach, we assessed the impact of childhood adversity on drug effects from three randomised, placebo-controlled studies in which healthy volunteers received methamphetamine (20 mg oral; n = 35), d-amphetamine (20 mg oral; n = 54) or buprenorphine (0.2 mg sublingual; n = 35). Ratings of feeling effect, liking, disliking, feeling high and wanting more of the drug were collected 15-210 min post-administration, and heart rate changes were analysed using random-intercept mixed-effect models. The area under the curve from these and previous studies was calculated to visualise the relationship between childhood adversity severity and drug effects. RESULTS Greater childhood adversity was associated with reduced feel effects (significant three-way interactions b = -0.07, 95% CI [-0.12, -0.02], p = 0.009), like effects (b = -0.07, 95% CI [-0.13, -0.00], p = 0.038) and feel high (b = -0.06, 95% CI [-0.10, -0.01], p = 0.020) towards the stimulant drugs 90-180 min post-administration. CONCLUSIONS Childhood adversity was not significantly associated with other subjective or heart rate responses to the drugs. Overall, participants with more childhood adversities reported dampened subjective responses to stimulant drugs, but not to buprenorphine. Future studies should examine the generalisability of these relationships, to identify the mechanisms underlying the link between childhood adversity and drug responsiveness.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the most common cause of mortality and morbidity in Western countries, thus representing a global health concern. CVDs show different patterns in terms of the prevalence and presentation in men and women. The role of sex hormones has been extensively implicated in these sex-specific differences, due to the presence of the menstrual cycle and menopause in women. Moreover, the gut microbiota (GM) has been implicated in cardiovascular health, considering the growing evidence that it is involved in determining the development of specific diseases. In particular, gut-derived metabolites have been linked to CVDs and kidney disorders, which can in turn promote the progression of CVDs. Considering the differences in the composition of GM between men and women, it is possible that gut microbiota act as a mediator in regard to the sex disparities in CVDs. This narrative review aims to comprehensively review the interplay between sex, GM, and CVDs, discussing potential mechanisms and therapeutic options.

Abstract
Substance use often begins during adolescence, placing youths at risk for fatal overdose and substance use disorders (SUD) in adulthood. Understanding the motivations reported by adolescents for using alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs and the persons with whom they use these substances could guide strategies to prevent or reduce substance use and its related consequences among adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted among adolescents being assessed for SUD treatment in the United States during 2014-2022, to examine self-reported motivations for using substances and the persons with whom substances were used. The most commonly reported motivation for substance use was "to feel mellow, calm, or relaxed" (73%), with other stress-related motivations among the top reasons, including "to stop worrying about a problem or to forget bad memories" (44%) and "to help with depression or anxiety" (40%); one half (50%) reported using substances "to have fun or experiment." The majority of adolescents reported using substances with friends (81%) or using alone (50%). These findings suggest that interventions related to reducing stress and addressing mental health concerns might reduce these leading motivations for substance use among adolescents. Education for adolescents about harm reduction strategies, including the danger of using drugs while alone and how to recognize and respond to an overdose, can reduce the risk for fatal overdose.

Abstract
Prescription stimulant misuse (PSM) is most prevalent among college students and is associated with numerous negative academic and psychosocial outcomes. A large body of literature has identified predictors of PSM in this population, however few studies have utilized a person-centered approach to examine how the sources from which students procure prescription stimulants are associated with substance-related and psychiatric impairment. We used latent class analysis (LCA) to classify a geographically and racially/ethnically diverse sample of U.S. undergraduates (N = 538) who misused prescription stimulants into groups based on their endorsement of nine sources of medication. We selected a five-group classification from the LCA with classes of peer/dealer, given by friend, own prescription, lower multiple sources (i.e., relatively infrequent endorsement of multiple sources), and any source. Compared to the reference group (given by friend), the own prescription class was less likely to report marijuana use, simultaneous alcohol and marijuana use, alcohol or marijuana consequences, and nonoral routes of administration. On the other hand, the own prescription class was more likely to screen positive for anxiety, anger, and suicidality. Similarly, the lower multiple sources group was more likely to screen positive for depression, anxiety, anger, and suicidality. Prevention and intervention efforts focused on PSM may be tailored differently for students who are misusing their own medication and/or endorsing multiple sources. Specifically, these students may need broader assistance with comorbid psychiatric conditions, particularly suicidality, while students who obtain stimulants from peers or a dealer may benefit more from substance-focused interventions. Abstract
Simultaneous co-ingestion of prescription medication (e.g., opioid, tranquilizer/sedative, stimulant) and alcohol is associated with overdose and elevated substance use, but no studies have examined prescription drug misuse (PDM) and alcohol co-ingestion in U.S. young adults (18-25 years), despite the high rates of PDM in this age group. We used the 2015-19 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (young adult N = 69,916) to examine prevalence of past-month PDM-alcohol co-ingestion, PDM characteristics, and sociodemographic, physical health, mental health, and substance use correlates. Logistic regression examined correlates, comparing those without past-year PDM, those with past-year but not past-month PDM, those with past-month PDM without alcohol co-ingestion, and those with past-month PDM and alcohol co-ingestion. An estimated 585,000 young adults engaged in any past-month PDM-alcohol co-ingestion, or between 32.7% (opioids) and 44.6% (tranquilizer/sedatives) of those who were engaged in past-month PDM. Co-ingestion varied by educational status and was more common in males and white or multiracial young adults. All PDM-involved groups had elevated odds of suicidal ideation and other psychopathology, but substance use and substance use disorder (SUD) odds were significantly higher in young adults with co-ingestion, versus all other groups. To illustrate, 41.1% with opioid-alcohol co-ingestion had multiple past-year SUDs, versus 2.0% in those without past-year PDM. Young adults with co-ingestion are particularly likely to have problematic alcohol use and higher rates of SUD. Counseling about the risks of PDM-alcohol co-ingestion and screening for co-ingestion among those at risk are warranted to limit poor outcomes. Abstract
In a 2021 survey, we found that “limit or suppression experiences” were related to a willingness to use enhancement technologies. However, the concept of “limit or suppression experiences” is vague and difficult to interpret in relation to neuroethics/enhancement. Thus, we aimed to better understand “limit or suppression experiences” and establish a robust philosophical concept of the topic. To do so, we exploratively investigated the concept to determine individual experiences with the presence or absence of sensing limits, investigate different ways in which limits can be sensed (factors of the sense of limits: “FSLs”), and identify factors that correlate with the strength of FSLs. Data from an Internet survey investigating respondents’ experiences with limits (1258 respondents) were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and a linear regression model. Five variables were extracted as the FSLs. The highest regression coefficients were found between physical FSL and sports activities and between cognitive FSL and academics. The lowest regression coefficients were found between relational FSL and academics, sports activities, and arts and cultural activities. The results facilitate a detailed discussion of the motivations of enhancement users, and the extraction of the suppression experience opens new enhancement directions. Further normative and empirical studies are required.

Abstract
Adults reporting past 5-year non-oral prescription stimulant NMU were studied. Non-oral NMU preferences were snorting (59%) injecting (4%) or smoking (1%). Polysubstance use was reported by 79.1% of the sample. Route of administration and motivation for prescription stimulant NMU were related. Prescription stimulant oral and intranasal NMU was to enhance performance. Prescription stimulant intravenous and smoking NMU was to get high.
Objective Increased prescription stimulant nonmedical use (NMU) is part of a growing polysubstance use landscape. The purpose of the present study was to characterize prescription stimulant NMU among adults reporting past 5-year non-oral prescription stimulant NMU. Methods Adults who reported non-oral prescription stimulant NMU within the last 5 years were recruited by banner ads placed on the Reddit website between February and September 2019. Types of prescription stimulants used, routes of administration, preferred routes of administration, motivations for prescription stimulant NMU, concurrent substances used simultaneously during prescription stimulant NMU, illicit substances used and factors impacting prescription stimulant NMU were queried. Results Respondents (n = 225) were male (86.2%), non-Hispanic (92.4%), white (78.2%), between 18 and 24 (48.0%) or 25–34 (43.1%) years with some amount of college education (81.3%). Most reported lifetime intranasal (93.8%) or oral use (85.2%). Prescription stimulants were diverted: 64.5% reported the prescription stimulants were given to them by a family or a friend and 10.5% reported that they had stolen these medications from a family or friend. Preferred route of administration was oral use (70.2%). Motivations to use were stratified by route of administration: intranasal (55.6%) or oral (63.0%) use was primarily endorsed as an attempt to enhance performance at work or at school; use by injection (57.1%) or smoking (62.5%) was primarily endorsed to get high. Most of the sample reported concurrent drug use (79.1%) including tobacco (57.3%), marijuana (52.0%), caffeine (47.6%) or alcohol (41.8%), among others. When excluding licit substances, 30.7% reported using 1 illicit substance concurrently with prescription stimulants and 25.3% reported using 2 or more illicit substances concurrently with prescription stimulants. Whether participants would undertake prescription stimulant NMU was determined by their work/school schedules or the location of the NMU (48.9%) whereas the route of administration employed was primarily influenced by the desired feeling or effect (56.9%). Conclusions Adults reporting lifetime non-oral prescription stimulant NMU engage in substantial risky behaviors that in addition to alternate routes of administration include polysubstance use, diversion and concurrent substance use.
