Harnessing stimuli-responsive biomaterials for advanced biomedical applications

Cell behavior is intricately intertwined with the in vivo microenvironment and endogenous pathways. The ability to guide cellular behavior toward specific goals can be achieved by external stimuli, notably electricity, light, ultrasound, and magnetism, simultaneously harnessed through biomaterial-mediated responses. These external triggers become focal points within the body due to interactions with biomaterials, facilitating a range of cellular pathways: electrical signal transmission, biochemical cues, drug release, cell loading, and modulation of mechanical stress. Stimulus-responsive biomaterials hold immense potential in biomedical research, establishing themselves as a pivotal focal point in interdisciplinary pursuits. This comprehensive review systematically elucidates prevalent physical stimuli and their corresponding biomaterial response mechanisms. Moreover, it delves deeply into the application of biomaterials within the domain of biomedicine. A balanced assessment of distinct physical stimulation techniques is provided, along with a discussion of their merits and limitations. The review aims to shed light on the future trajectory of physical stimulus-responsive biomaterials in disease treatment and outline their application prospects and potential for future development. This review is poised to spark novel concepts for advancing intelligent, stimulus-responsive biomaterials.

Enhancing photocatalytic wastewater treatment: investigating the promising applications of nickel ferrite and its novel nanocomposites

Water contamination ranks highest among the challenges posed by the rapidly increasing environmental contamination, which is thought to be the most pressing issue globally. The development of innovative techniques for the successful removal of diverse types of undesirable pollutants from wastewater would therefore yield a huge return on investment. Nowadays, the removal of many organic and synthetic pollutants from the environmental matrix is anticipated to be possible by photocatalytic degradation, owing to its low energy consumption, high catalytic activity, and low overall cost. In this context, magnetic nanoparticles received greater attention as photocatalytic materials from the scientific community in wastewater treatment for the removal of different kinds of pollutants due to their specific properties. The present study provides an overview of the recent advances in water treatment using nickel ferrite nanoparticles and their nanocomposites as photocatalysts. Furthermore, a proposed mechanism for these photocatalysts to generate active free radicals under visible and ultraviolet light has been described. The review concludes that photocatalysts based on NiFe2O4 have potential applications in water purification technologies. However, more research is still needed to determine their practical application in water treatment facilities.

A Comprehensive Examination of Heterocyclic Scaffold Chemistry for Antitubercular Activity

Tuberculosis is a communicable disease which affects humans particularly the lungs and is transmitted mainly through air. Despite two decades of intensive research aimed at understanding and combating tuberculosis, persistent biological uncertainties continue to hinder progress. Nowadays, heterocyclic compounds have proven themselves in effective treatment of tuberculosis because of their wide range of biological and pharmacological activities. Antituberculosis or antimycobacterial agents encompass a broad array of compounds utilized singly or in conjunction to combat Mycobacterium infections, spanning from tuberculosis to leprosy. Here, we summarize the synthesis of various heterocyclic compounds which includes the greener synthetic route as well as use of nano compounds as catalyst along with their anti TB activities.

Spectroscopic, computational, cytotoxicity, and docking studies of 6-bromobenzimidazole as anti-breast cancer agent

6-Bromobenzimidazole (6BBZ) has been calculated in this study utilizing the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set and the Becke-3-Lee-Yang-Parr density functional approaches. The basic frequencies and geometric optimization are known. FTIR, FT-Raman, and UV-Vis spectra of the substance are compared between its computed and observed values. The energy gap between highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and molecule electrostatic potentials has been represented by charge density distributions that may be associated with the biological response. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations in the gas phase and dimethyl sulfoxide were carried out to ascertain the electronic properties and energy gap values using the same basis set. Molecular orbital contributions are investigated using the overlap population, partial, and total densities of states. Natural bond analysis was found to have strong electron delocalization by means of π(C4-C9) → π*(C5-C6), LP (N1) → π*(C7-C8), and LP(Br12) → π*(C5-C6) interactions. The Fukui function and Mulliken analysis have been explored on the atomic charges of the molecule. The nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts for 1 H and 13 C have been computed using the gauge-independent atomic orbital technique. With the highest binding affinity (-6.2 kcal mol-1 ) against estrogen sulfotransferase receptor (PDB ID: 1AQU) and low IC50 value of 17.23 μg/mL, 6BBZ demonstrated potent action against the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. Studies on the antibacterial activity and ADMET prediction of the molecule have also been carried out.
