Predominance of Studies With Poor Level of Evidence Among the Top 100 Most Cited Studies on Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Bibliometric and Content Analysis

Exercise therapy for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis rehabilitation: a bibliometric analysis (1999-2023)

Background

Among the conservative treatments for rehabilitation of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), exercise therapy has attracted a large number of studies as its advantages of good clinical effect, high operability, high compliance, few side effects and low cost. We conduct a bibliometric analysis of previous research to identify prevalent areas of study and inform research for the future directions in this paper.

Methods

Relevant publications and reviews were collected using the Science Citation Index Expanded from the Web of Science Core Collection. Information from the included studies was analyzed systematically using VOSviewer and Citespace software to identify patterns regarding publications, keywords, authors, citations, countries, institutions and journals.

Results

A total of 172 articles published from 1999 to 2023 were identified. Over the last decade, the number of publications has gradually increased, reaching a peak of 21 publications in 2021. China, North America and Western European countries and institutions are leading the way as far as the quantity of publications and the total number of citations are concerned. The current areas of focus are the efficacy of exercise therapy in relation to enhancing the quality of life of adolescents during rehabilitation.

Conclusions

This is the first bibliometric analysis that provides a comprehensive review of the research trends and advances in exercise therapy for the rehabilitation of AIS. The study identifies latest research frontiers and hot directions, providing a valuable reference for scholars in the field of exercise therapy.

Top 100 most cited articles on anterior cervical discectomy and fusion

Objective

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a typical surgical method in spine surgery and has progressed significantly in the last several decades. The purpose of this study is to determine how the 100 most-cited original articles on ACDF have been the most influential in this field by identifying and analyzing them.

Methods

The articles on ACDF were identified by searching the Thomson ISI Web of Science database on 30 May 2022. The 100 most-cited articles were selected according to specific criteria. The data extracted from the articles included title, publication date, total citations, journal name, first author, institutions, and keywords.

Results

The total number of citations was 13,181, with a mean number of 131.81 ± 100.18. The publication dates ranged from 1994 to 2018. Most of these articles originated in the United States (68%) and were published in the 2000s (32%) and 2010s (48%). Spine published most of the articles (30%), followed by the Journal of Neurosurgery-Spine (16%), Spine Journal (14%), and European Spine Journal (13%). The most prolific author was Dr. Todd J Albert (n = 7), with 1,312 citations. The Texas Back Institute was the most productive institution (n = 10). The keywords ACDF, cervical spine, cervical spine, and fusion showed the highest degree of centrality.

Conclusion

One hundred top-cited articles on ACDF were identified and analyzed in this study. We demonstrate that ACDF is a growing and popular area of research, with the focus of research varying through timeline trends. This will provide a comprehensive and detailed basis for spine surgeons to make clinical decisions and assimilate the research focus of cervical spine surgery.

The publication trends and hot spots of scoliosis research from 2009 to 2018: a 10-year bibliometric analysis

Background

This study aims to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the trends in scoliosis research and evaluate research hotspots using bibliometric analysis.

Methods

All relevant publications on scoliosis from the period from 2009 to 2018 were extracted from the Web of Science and PubMed databases. Publication trends were analyzed using an Online analysis platform of literature metrology, Bibliographic Item Co-occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB), and CiteSpace software. Hotspots were analyzed and visualized using the gCLUTO software package.

Results

A total of 7,445 scoliosis research publications dated between 2009 and 2018 were found. The spine was the most popular journal in this field during this period. The United States maintained a top position in global scoliosis research throughout the 10 years and has had a pivotal influence, followed by China and Canada. Among all institutions, the University of California, San Francisco, was a leader in research collaboration. At the same time, Professors Yong Qiu and Lawrence G. Lenke made great achievements in scoliosis research. We analyzed the major Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms/MeSH subheadings and identified eight hotspots in scoliosis research.

Conclusions

We summarized the publication information of scoliosis-related literature in the 10 years from 2009 to 2018, including country and institution of origin, authors, and publication journal. We analyzed former research hotspots in the field of scoliosis and predicted future areas of interest. The development of various new orthopedic plants, artificial intelligence diagnosis, and genetic research will be future hotspots in scoliosis research.

The most influential publications in cervical myelopathy

Management of cervical myelopathy (CM) has continued to evolve through a better understanding of the long-term outcomes of this diagnosis as well as improved diagnostic guidelines. More recent literature continues to expand the field, but certain publications can be distinguished from others due to their lasting impact. Using the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science, search phrases were used to identify publications pertaining to CM. The fifty most cited articles were isolated. The frequency of citations, year of publication, country of origin, journal of publication, level of evidence (LOE), article type, as well as contributing authors and institutions were recorded. We also highlighted the five most cited articles (per year) from the past 10 years. Publications included ranged from 1952-2011, with the plurality of articles published during 2000-2009 (n=21; 42%). The most cited paper was Hillibrand's 1999 reporting of adjacent segment disease rates following cervical fusions, followed by Hirabayashi's 1983 review of his cervical laminoplasty outcomes. The third most cited was Brain's 1952 review of the manifestations of cervical spondylosis. Spine contributed the most publications (n=26; 52%). A LOE of III was the most common (n=30; 60%). Clinical outcome articles were the most frequent type (n=28; 56%). Osaka University (Japan) and Kazou Yonenobu had the most contributions. Ames or Fehlings were the first or last author in each of the five most influential articles from the past 10 years. This bibliometric citation analysis identifies the most influential articles regarding CM. There are few publications with a high LOE, and more high powered studies are needed. Knowledge of these "classic" publications allows for a better overall understanding of the diagnosis, treatment, and future direction of research of CM.
