The many phases of CaC2

Extending carbon chemistry at high-pressure by synthesis of CaC2 and Ca3C7 with deprotonated polyacene- and para-poly(indenoindene)-like nanoribbons

Metal carbides are known to contain small carbon units similar to those found in the molecules of methane, acetylene, and allene. However, for numerous binary systems ab initio calculations predict the formation of unusual metal carbides with exotic polycarbon units, [C6] rings, and graphitic carbon sheets at high pressure (HP). Here we report the synthesis and structural characterization of a HP-CaC2 polymorph and a Ca3C7 compound featuring deprotonated polyacene-like and para-poly(indenoindene)-like nanoribbons, respectively. We also demonstrate that carbides with infinite chains of fused [C6] rings can exist even at conditions of deep planetary interiors ( ~ 140 GPa and ~3300 K). Hydrolysis of high-pressure carbides may provide a possible abiotic route to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Universe.

Ca(II) and Yb(II) complexes featuring M(C≡C)4 structural motif: enforced proximity or genuine η2 -bonding?

Bis(carbazolide) complexes M[3,6-tBu2 -1,8-(RC≡C)2 Carb]2 (THF)n (R=SiMe3 , n=0, M=Ca, Yb; R=Ph, n=1, M=Ca, Yb; n=0, M=Yb) were synthesized through transamination reaction of M[N(SiMe3 )2 ]2 (THF)2 with two molar equivalents of carbazoles. The complexes feature M(η2 -C≡C)4 structural motif composed of M(II) ions encapsulated by four acetylene fragments due to atypical for alkaline- and rare-earth metals η2 -interactions with triple C≡C bond. This interaction is evidenced experimentally by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy in the solid state and by NMR-spectroscopy in the solution. According to QTAIM analysis there are 4 bond critical points (3;-1) between the metal atom and each of the triple bonds, which are connected by a strongly curved, almost T-shaped bond pathway.

Realization of an Ideal Cairo Tessellation in Nickel Diazenide NiN2: High-Pressure Route to Pentagonal 2D Materials

Most of the studied two-dimensional (2D) materials are based on highly symmetric hexagonal structural motifs. In contrast, lower-symmetry structures may have exciting anisotropic properties leading to various applications in nanoelectronics. In this work we report the synthesis of nickel diazenide NiN₂ which possesses atomic-thick layers comprised of Ni₂N₃ pentagons forming Cairo-type tessellation. The layers of NiN₂ are weakly bonded with the calculated exfoliation energy of 0.72 J/m², which is just slightly larger than that of graphene. The compound crystallizes in the space group of the ideal Cairo tiling (P4/mbm) and possesses significant anisotropy of elastic properties. The single-layer NiN₂ is a direct-band-gap semiconductor, while the bulk material is metallic. This indicates the promise of NiN₂ to be a precursor of a pentagonal 2D material with a tunable direct band gap.

Understanding the solubilization of Ca acetylide with a new computational model for ionic pairs

The unique reactivity of the acetylenic unit in DMSO gives rise to ubiquitous synthetic methods. We theoretically consider CaC2 solubility and protolysis in DMSO and formulate a strategy for CaC2 activation in solution-phase chemical transformations. For this, we use a new strategy for the modeling of ionic compounds in strongly coordinating solvents combining Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics with the DFTB3-D3(BJ) Hamiltonian and static DFT computations at the PBE0-D3(BJ)/pob-TZVP-gCP level. We modeled the thermodynamics of CaC2 protolysis under ambient conditions, taking into account its known heterogeneity and considering three polymorphs of CaC2. We give a theoretical basis for the existence of the elusive intermediate HC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ca-OH and show that CaC2 insolubility in DMSO is of thermodynamic nature. We confirm the unique role of water and specific properties of DMSO in CaC2 activation and explain how the activation is realized. The proposed strategy for the utilization of CaC2 in sustainable organic synthesis is outlined.

Calcium-Based Sustainable Chemical Technologies for Total Carbon Recycling

Calcium carbide, a stable solid compound composed of two atoms of carbon and one of calcium, has proven its effectiveness in chemical synthesis, due to the safety and convenience of handling the C≡C acetylenic units. The areas of CaC₂ application are very diverse, and the development of calcium-mediated approaches resolves several important challenges. This Review aims to discuss the laboratory chemistry of calcium carbide, and to go beyond its frontiers to organic synthesis, life sciences, materials and construction, carbon dioxide capturing, alloy manufacturing, and agriculture. The recyclability of calcium carbide and the availability of large-scale industrial production facilities, as well as the future possibility of fossil-resource-independent manufacturing, position this compound as a key chemical platform for sustainable development. Easy regeneration and reuse of the carbide highlight calcium-based sustainable chemical technologies as promising instruments for total carbon recycling.
