Analysis of Research Productivity and Assessment of Geographical Region in the General Surgery Match: How Much is Enough?

Association of pre-residency publications with research productivity in residency, fellowship, and academic career choice among Canadian ophthalmologists

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to assess whether the research output of medical students who matched into a Canadian ophthalmology residency program influences their subsequent research productivity during residency, decision to pursue a fellowship, or engagement in academic practice.

DESIGN

Retrospective database review.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 369 trainees commencing ophthalmology residency from 2004 to 2015 at 15 residency programs.

METHODS

Each trainee's publication record was queried in Scopus before and after the date they started residency. Multiple public sources were searched to identify fellowship placement and the type of subsequent practice (i.e., academic or community). Predictors of research productivity during residency, fellowship, and practice setting were assessed using multivariable regression analyses.

RESULTS

Trainees with pre-residency publications (n = 187) demonstrated significantly higher research productivity during residency than those without pre-residency publications (n = 182), with a mean of 5.17 ± 5.97 versus 1.60 ± 2.38 publications on any topic (p < 0.001). Pre-residency research output was a predictor of research productivity during residency (relative risk = 1.17; 95% CI, 1.09-1.27; p < 0.001), pursuing fellowship (odds ratio, 2.9; 95% CI, 1.74-4.83), and an academic career (odds ratio = 1.85; 95% CI, 1.07-3.2).

CONCLUSION

Pre-residency research output is a significant predictor of research productivity during residency and subsequent career choices, suggesting that pre-residency publishing reflects a propensity toward an academic trajectory. Residency publication count moderates this association, underscoring the role of the residency program environment in fostering research productivity. Addressing barriers such as mentorship, funding, and curriculum may be key to incentivizing trainees to pursue academic medicine.

Residency program directors' views on ideal applicant: a national survey

PURPOSE

The aim of this study is to investigate and highlight the most important factors influencing the candidate's selection for residency matching by program directors of surgical and non-surgical specialties in Saudi Arabia.

METHOD

This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Central, Eastern, Western, Northern, and Southern regions of Saudi Arabia from February 1, 2023, to August 31, 2023. A total of sixty-one program directors completed a questionnaire, which was adapted and validated from a previous study with permission and tailored to meet the objectives of this research.

RESULTS

The mean age of the study population was 40.2 years, with surgical specialty program directors being older at 41.7 years and nonsurgical specialty program directors being younger at 39.6 years. In both cases, the highest importance was given to 'Applicant's attitude and professionalism', followed in surgical specialties by 'Doing clinical rotations in the PD institution' and 'Performance in clinical rotation during internship' in non-surgical specialties. with a mean score of 4.13 and 4.95, respectively. The importance of 'The impression/opinion of current residents' has had a certain importance in both specialties. While the number of research projects was prioritized more by surgical PDs (38.6%) compared to non-surgical PDs (29.4%).

CONCLUSION

This study highlights the critical role of professionalism and a positive attitude in clinical rotations and interviews for program acceptance in Saudi Arabia. The significance of letters of recommendation and research focus varies between surgical and non-surgical program directors. Program directors should adopt effective recruitment strategies that incorporate practical implications during internships.

"Top 20" residency-trained academic orthopaedic surgeons have higher academic productivity and funding in their careers

"Top 20" status on Doximity, an online networking service for medical professionals, is an indicator of the reputation of a residency program. The study assesses how training at a Top 20 (T20) orthopaedic residency program impacts career productivity and funding. Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database was used in 2022 to identify active orthopaedic residency programs. Demographic and training data was collected for each orthopaedic surgeon using institutional websites and Doximity. The Residency Navigator feature on Doximity was used to rank residency programs by "reputation." Programs were categorized as either T20 or non-T20. The relative citation ratio (RCR) was calculated using the NIH iCite tool and Hirsch index (h-index) was calculated using Scopus. Industry funding was collected from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Open Payments Program (CMS) for all available years (2014-2020). A total of 2812 academic orthopaedic surgeons were included in the study. Among academic orthopaedic surgeons in the United States, T20 trained orthopedists had more publications and citations (p < 0.001), along with higher h-indices (p < 0.001), RCR (p < 0.001), and industry funding (p = 0.043). Additionally, T20 trained orthopedists were 1.375 times more likely to obtain professor status (95% confidence interval: 1.150-1.645, p < 0.001). Even after propensity-matched analysis, T20 trained orthopedists maintained these differences. Training at a T20 residency program is associated with promotion, productivity, and funding. These findings are especially of concern to medical students who must consider the importance of a residency program's reputation when deciding where to apply for residency.

Research productivity of first-year Canadian ophthalmology residents: a 12-year trend

OBJECTIVE

Research experience is one criterion of the selection process for applicants to residency training programs. We aim to quantify temporal trends in research productivity of medical students who matched into a canadian ophthalmology residency program.

DESIGN

Retrospective database review.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 465 residents commencing ophthalmology training from 2010 to 2022 in 15 Canadian ophthalmology residency programs.

METHODS

The names of all residents commencing training in ophthalmology in all Canadian programs from 2010 to 2022 were identified. Bibliometric data including publication count and type, authorship position, and H-index corresponding to the match year were extracted from the Scopus database. Descriptive and univariate statistics were used to characterize and assess trends in research productivity.

RESULTS

A total of 461 ophthalmology residents (99% complete data set) from all 15 residency programs representing 1179 publications, including 679 ophthalmology-related publications, were identified. Most publications were original research (676; 58%), followed by case reports and letters (324; 27%) and reviews (162; 14%). Overall, 62% of residents had at least 1 publication at the time of the match, with a mean of 2.56 ± 3.49 publications and a mean H-index of 1.03 ± 1.48 publications. There was a significant increase (p < 0.001) in all research productivity metrics except senior authorship in the period 2019-2022 compared with 2010-2018. Notably, 91% of residents had ≥1 publication in 2022 compared with 38% in 2010.

CONCLUSION

First-year ophthalmology resident publication productivity doubled from 2010-2016 to 2017-2022 suggesting a greater emphasis on scholarly work from medical trainees, a trend similar to that reported in other specialties.
