Abstract
Background and objectives Diazinon (DZN) is a cholinesterase inhibitor widely used to relieve agricultural pests and upgrade the productivity of crops. Resveratrol (Res), as a phenolic plant compound, has a protective role against free radicals. This study intended to evaluate the impacts of Res on homeostatic disturbances induced by DZN in rats. Method Twenty-four Wistar rats (4 weeks) were randomly distributed into four groups of six animals each. The first group (control group) received corn oil. The second group (Res group) received orally Res (20 mg/kg. The third group (DZN group) received the oral DZN (70 mg/kg); the fourth group (Res plus DZN group) was treated simultaneously with DZN (70 mg/kg) and Res (20 mg/kg); for a period of 5 weeks. The serum, liver, kidney, and heart levels of the Copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), and magnesium (Mg) as main trace elements are measured. Results DZN treatment decreased significantly serum, liver, kidney, and heart levels of Cu, Zn, Fe, Se, and Mg in comparison with the control group. Res administration enhanced serum, liver, kidney, and content of heart elements compared to the DZN group. Conclusions These results suggested that Res could ameliorate the homeostatic imbalance induced by DZN. Res had a protective effect against DZN-provoking heart, renal, and hepatic toxicity in animal models.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age which is characterized by various reproductive and metabolic disorders. Oxidative stress (OS) is now recognized to be involved in the pathogenesis of PCOS which could be targeted in the management of PCOS-related complications. Selenium (Se), as an antioxidant trace element, has been shown to decrease in PCOS patients. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the Se and selenoprotein P (SELENOP) levels with OS markers in women with PCOS. In this cross-sectional study, 125 females aged 18-45 years diagnosed with PCOS were included. Demographic, clinical, and lifestyle information of participants were obtained using the relevant questionnaires. Fasting blood samples were collected to measure biochemical parameters. Serum levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase activities as well as anthropometric measurements were assessed across tertiles of serum concentrations of Se and SELENOP. Higher serum levels of Se were associated with higher serum TAC levels (β=0.42, P<0.001) and erythrocytes GPx activity (β=0.28, P=0.002) as well as with lower serum TBARS levels (β= -0.26, P=0.003). Similarly, higher serum levels of SELENOP were associated with higher TAC (β=0.32, P<0.001) and erythrocyte GPx activity (β=0.30, P=0.001). SELENOP also showed an inverse association with serum levels of TBARS (β= -0.40, P<0.001). Nevertheless, erythrocytes SOD and CAT activities showed no significant relationships with serum Se and SELENOP concentrations (all P>0.05). The present study found that serum Se and SELENOP levels were inversely associated with TBARS levels and positively associated with TAC levels and erythrocytes GPx activity.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that by its antioxidant properties has been studied to elucidate its participation in the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes. We evaluated the association between cardiometabolic traits and serum Se levels in a sample of adults from southern Mexico. In 96 nondiabetic individuals, anthropometric data and clinical biochemistry measurements were analyzed. Serum total Se levels were measured with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Serum Se level in the whole sample was 10.309 ± 3.031 μg mL-1 and no difference between the women and men was observed (p = 0.09). Additionally, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was significantly associated with serum Se level (β = -0.07 ± 0.03, p = 0.02, analysis adjusted for age, sex and BMI). Furthermore, sex shows significant interaction with FPG on the serum Se levels (p = 0.01). A follow-up analysis revealed the particular association between FPG and Se levels in women (β = -0.10 ± 0.04, p = 0.01). In conclusion, our data evidenced a women-specific association between FPG and serum Se levels in a sample of adults from southern Mexico.

Abstract
PURPOSE Obesity is becoming more prevalent worldwide. Magnesium (Mg) intake may play a role in the regulation of energy metabolism and body weight. Therefore, in this cross-sectional study, we aimed to investigate the association between dietary Mg intake and body composition among healthy adults. METHODS A total of 778 adult men and women aged 18-59 years who attended health care centers in Tehran, Iran, entered the final analysis. Dietary intake was assessed with a validated and reliable food frequency questionnaire with 168 items and the dietary Mg intake was estimated using Nutritionist IV software. Anthropometric measurements and blood samples were collected and body composition was evaluated employing the Body Mass Index (BMI), A Body Shape Index (ABSI), Body Adiposity Index (BAI), Body Roundness Index (BRI), Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI), Lipid Accumulation Index (LAP), and Triglyceride-Glucose index (TyG). Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the association of the dietary Mg intake with body composition indices. RESULTS The mean daily dietary Mg intake was 294 ± 140 mg in men and 262 ± 112 mg in women. Unadjusted linear regression showed that dietary magnesium intake is significantly associated with a waist to hip ratio (WHR) and total cholesterol (TC) in men, and hip circumference (HC) in women. After adjusting for potential confounders including age, education, marriage, occupation and smoking, total energy intake, and activity score, there remained no significant association between dietary Mg intake and any of the body composition indices including BMI, ABSI, BAI, BRI, VAI, LAP, and TyG neither in men nor women. CONCLUSION Higher Mg intake was not associated with anthropometric indices in Iranian adults, according to our findings. Additional observational studies would be beneficial in clarifying the existing findings.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the associations of adipose tissue trace element concentrations with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) incidence over a 16-year follow-up period in an adult cohort from Southern Spain. 16-year T2DM incidence was gathered from hospital records. Chemical analyses of Cr, V, Zn, Fe, Cu and Se in adipose tissue were performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Multivariable Cox-regression models were used. Complementary cross-sectional analyses with markers of glucose homeostasis at recruitment were performed by multivariable linear regression. Out of 214 participants, 39 developed T2DM during the follow-up. Adipose tissue concentrations of Fe (HR = 1.97, 95% CI: 0.99 to 2.58, p = 0.057), Cr (HR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.07-2.33, p = 0.022) and Cu (HR = 1.61, 95% CI: 1.01-2.58, p = 0.046) were individually associated with T2DM incidence. When Fe, Cr and Cu were simultaneously entered in a model, only Cr was significantly associated with T2DM incidence (HR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.02-2.76, p = 0.041). Furthermore, adipose tissue V (β = 0.283, p = 0.004) and Zn (β = 0.217, p = 0.028) concentrations were positively associated with β-pancreatic cell function (HOMA-β), while Se showed an inverse association (β = -0.049, p = 0.027). Although further research is warranted on the potential mechanisms of action, our results suggest that adipose tissue concentrations of certain trace elements (particularly Fe, Cr and Cu) are associated with the risk of incident T2DM, while V and Zn might have a protective effect. These biomarkers might complement prediction algorithms and contribute to identify patients with an increased risk of T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Effects of the micronutrient selenium have been proposed in obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) that involve impairments in glucose metabolic pathways and the insulin signaling cascade, mediated through oxidative stress and inflammation. However, the evidence collected to date through animal and epidemiologic studies has been inconclusive. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to evaluate the relationships of selenium status and inflammation with T2DM and obesity. METHODS Participants in the re-survey of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT)2 study conducted in 2013 (N=655, age 45-60 years) were allocated to three groups based on their body mass index (World Health Organization Asia-Pacific Classification), and their serum selenium and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) concentrations and other clinical parameters were compared. RESULTS Significant differences in serum selenium and hs-CRP among the groups were associated with differences in fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin, as well as differences in the prevalence of prediabetes or T2DM. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals) for prediabetes or diabetes were 1.991 (1.318-3.009) and 3.786 (2.087-6.896) for the lowest and highest tertiles of serum selenium concentration in the entire sample and obese participants, respectively. Furthermore, the rising extent of hs-CRP increased the significantly associated with prediabetes or diabetes (adjusted ORs; 2.268 for the entire sample, 4.043 for the overweight and 1.910 for the obesity). CONCLUSION Selenium status may be linked to both obesity and T2DM through its effects on signaling pathways. Further nutrigenomic studies are required to clarify the relationship between selenium and metabolic diseases.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) homeostasis is tightly related to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, but its possible roles in obesity development and in adipocyte metabolism are unclear. The objective of the present study is to review the current data on Se status in obesity and to discuss the interference between Se and selenoprotein metabolism in adipocyte physiology and obesity pathogenesis. The overview and meta-analysis of the studies on blood Se and selenoprotein P (SELENOP) levels, as well as glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity in obese subjects, have yielded heterogenous and even conflicting results. Laboratory studies demonstrate that Se may modulate preadipocyte proliferation and adipogenic differentiation, and also interfere with insulin signaling, and regulate lipolysis. Knockout models have demonstrated that the selenoprotein machinery, including endoplasmic reticulum-resident selenoproteins together with GPXs and thioredoxin reductases (TXNRDs), are tightly related to adipocyte development and functioning. In conclusion, Se and selenoproteins appear to play an essential role in adipose tissue physiology, although human data are inconsistent. Taken together, these findings do not support the utility of Se supplementation to prevent or alleviate obesity in humans. Further human and laboratory studies are required to elucidate associations between Se metabolism and obesity.

BACKGROUND Along with economic development and living standards' improvement, more and more attention has been converted from satisfying meat quantity to pursuing meat quality. RESEARCH PURPOSE This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of increasing selenium (Se) supplementation to a moderately-reduced energy and protein diet (MREP) on growth performance, antioxidant status, meat quality in finishing pigs. BASIC PROCEDURES A total of 144 "Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire" pigs with the average body weight of 75 ± 1 kg were randomly allotted to 3 dietary treatments with six replicates per treatment and eight pigs per replicate. The 3 experimental diets were as follows: (1) Normal energy and protein (NEP) +0.2 mg/kg Se diet (14.02 MJ/kg DE, 14% CP and 0.2 mg/kg Se as selenite sodium), (2) MREP +0.2 mg/kg Se diet (13.60 MJ/kg DE, 13% CP and 0.2 mg/kg Se as selenite sodium), and (3) MREP +0.5 mg/kg Se diet (13.60 MJ/kg DE, 13% CP, 0.2 mg/kg Se as selenite sodium, and 0.3 mg/kg Se as Se-enriched yeast). The study lasted for 45 days. MAIN FINDINGS The results show that there were no differences for growth performance, antioxidant status and meat quality of finishing pigs between NEP +0.2 mg/kg Se group and MREP +0.2 mg/kg Se group (P>0.05). However, compared to pigs from MREP +0.2 mg/kg Se group, pigs from MREP +0.5 mg/kg Se group had greater Se concentration, GSH-Px activity and GSH concentration, but lower MDA concentration in serum (P<0.05). Also, pigs from MREP +0.5 mg/kg Se group had greater Se concentration, T-AOC, and SOD activity, but lower MDA concentration in loin compared with pigs from MREP +0.2 mg/kg Se group (P<0.05). As for meat quality, pigs from MREP +0.5 mg/kg Se group had greater a* value (relative redness) at 45 min and 24 h in loin compared with pigs from MREP +0.2 mg/kg Se group (P<0.05). Compared to pigs from MREP +0.2 mg/kg Se group, pigs from MREP +0.5 mg/kg Se group had lower MDA concentration of fresh pork during a simulated retail display at 0, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 7 day (P<0.05). PRINCIPAL CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, increasing selenium supplementation to a moderately-reduced energy and protein diet improved antioxidant status and meat quality without affecting growth performance in finishing pigs. (New Aspects) The present study provided a nutritional strategy for reducing feed costs and improving pork quality without influencing growth performance in finishing pigs.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient required by the human body and exerts biological functions through selenoproteins. The relationship between Se and diabetes remains ambiguous. This study aimed at, through measurements of serum selenoprotein P (SelP), glutathione peroxidase (GPx3), and Se content in serum and hair, evaluating Se levels in community dwellers with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A total of 336 subjects, including 176 T2DM patients (65.5 ± 8.7 years old) and 160 healthy residents (63.7 ± 9.8 years old, as controls), were recruited in this cross-sectional community-based study performed in Suzhou. Samples of fasting venous blood and hair were collected for measurements of Se levels, glycometabolism, and biochemistry parameters. We found that the serum Se level and SelP concentration in T2DM patients were substantially higher than those in healthy residents (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in GPx3 activity and hair Se level between the two groups of subjects (p > 0.05). Serum Se was positively correlated with both GPx3 and hair Se in T2DM patients (r = 0.167 and 0.164, respectively, p < 0.05) and negatively correlated with SelP in healthy controls (r = - 0.293, p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study showed significantly higher levels of serum Se and SelP in community dwellers with T2DM than in matched healthy residents.
