Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2, has affected hundreds of millions of people globally, resulting in millions of deaths. During this pandemic, children have demonstrated greater resistance than adults, exhibiting lower infection rates, reduced mortality, and milder symptoms. Summarizing the differences in resistance between children and adults during COVID-19 can provide insights into protective mechanisms and potential implications for future treatments. In this review, we focused on summarizing and discussing the mechanisms for better protection of children in COVID-19. These protective mechanisms encompass several factors: the baseline expression of cell surface receptor ACE2 and hydrolase TMPRSS2, the impact of complications on COVID-19, and age-related cytokine profiles. Additionally, differences in local and systemic immune responses between children and adults also contribute significantly, particularly interferon responses, heterologous protection from non-COVID-19 vaccinations, and immune status variations influenced by micronutrient levels. The advantageous protection mechanisms of these children may provide insights into the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Importantly, while age-related metabolic profiles and differential COVID-19 vaccine responses may contribute to protection in children, current comparative research remains limited and requires further investigation.

Abstract
Purpose Endometriosis is a prevalent gynecological disorder, yet data on the role of trace metal elements in its risk remain limited. We aimed to investigate the relationship between serum copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg) levels, and the Cu/Zn ratio with the risk of endometriosis. Methods This study involved 568 infertile patients diagnosed with endometriosis, compared to 819 infertile patients without endometriosis (Control group). Basic characteristics, hormonal parameters, and essential trace elements of the patients were measured and analyzed. Results The findings indicated a notable decrease in serum Zn levels in the endometriosis group compared to controls, alongside a significant increase in the Cu/Zn ratio (p < 0.001). Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis revealed a linear relationship between Zn levels and the Cu/Zn ratio and endometriosis risk. Moreover, Zn levels exhibited a negative correlation with endometriosis risk (p trend = 0.005), while the Cu/Zn ratio displayed a positive correlation with endometriosis risk, even after adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), and baseline hormones (p trend < 0.001). Compared to the first quartile of Cu/Zn ratio after adjustment, the odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the second and fourth quartiles were 1.97 (1.37, 2.83) and 2.63 (1.80, 3.84), respectively. Conclusions This study provided evidence of decreased serum Zn levels and an increased Cu/Zn ratio being associated with an elevated risk of endometriosis among infertile patients. These findings offer valuable real-world data, enriching our understanding of endometriosis.

Abstract
The exact role of zinc in COVID-19-infected patients is not well understood. We examined the effects and outcomes of zinc deficiency on COVID-19-infected patients. We focused on patient outcomes: severity, symptomatology, and mortality. The meta-analysis was performed to examine whether COVID-19-infected individuals suffered greater symptomology and mortality. Secondary outcomes explored included severity and hospital length of stay. For mortality, we found that COVID-19-infected individuals with zinc deficiency had a greater risk of mortality than individuals without zinc deficiency (risk ratio (RR)=5.77; 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.48, 9.54; p=0.004). For symptomology, we found that COVID-19-infected individuals with zinc deficiency had a greater risk of symptomatology than individuals without a zinc deficiency (RR=1.39; 95% CI: 1.13, 1.70; p=0.020). Zinc-deficient individuals are at a greater risk for mortality and symptomatology. Our findings further reinforce the importance of supplementation as a prophylactic agent against viral infections such as COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meta-analyses show increased copper (Cu) levels in major depression disorder. However, the association of Cu biomarkers with clinical classification in other mental health disorders has not been fully explored. METHODS To this aim, we compared an extensive panel of Cu biomarkers, composed of Cu, ceruloplasmin (Cp) Cp activity, Cp specific activity, Cu not bound to ceruloplasmin (non-Cp Cu, also known as 'free' copper) in 171 consecutive patients affected by psychiatric disorders and in 61 healthy controls (HC) using MANOVA adjusting for the effect of sex and age, and studied their association with the clinical scale outcomes at psychiatric examination, namely Global Assessment of Functioning, Clinical Global Impression, and Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. RESULTS individuals with psychiatric disorders were classified as 109 patients affected by mood spectrum disorders (MSD), 20 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), and 42 with personality disorders (PD). Cu and non-Cp Cu were increased in psychiatric individuals than in HC, which also differed among the patients stratified per the clinical classification, being higher in the MSD individuals. The analysis stratified for sex revealed that women from the patient group, and specifically from the MSD group, had increased levels of Cu and non-Cp Cu than healthy women, while no difference was revealed in men. A logistic regression model considering the effect of sex and age revealed that non-Cp Cu could explain 26 % increased odds of having MSD per µmol/L unit increase (OR = 1.26; p = 0.0008; 95 % CI 1.099-1.436), that reached 40 % when considering only women. This result was driven by non-Cp Cu that correctly classified 64.1 % MSD (70 % in women) individuals vs. HC in a decision tree model, with values higher than 2.1 µmol/L which could distinguish the majority of MSD patients (86.3 % MSD vs. 13.7 % HC in women). None of the biological variables under study correlated with outcomes of the clinical scales, substances, or alcohol abuse. CONCLUSION Current results suggest mild Cu toxicity in women with MSD, as revealed by a value of non-Cp Cu higher than 2.1 µmol/L, which can be further investigated to assess its potential diagnostic accuracy in bigger and longitudinal cohorts.

Abstract
Background and Aims Ovarian and uterine tumors are among the most serious gynecological diseases and the most common cause of mortality globally. In recent times, the role of trace elements in the onset and development of tumors has come under the review. This study aimed to assess the levels of Zn and Cu in the serum of female patients with benign and malignant uterine and ovarian tumors. Materials and Methods One hundred and twenty-four women with benign and malignant ovarian and uterine tumors were eligible for the study. Blood samples were obtained and analyzed using flame-atomic absorption spectroscopy spectrometry in Najaf City, Iraq. Results Serum zinc levels exhibited lower concentration (4.73 ± 1.92) in patients with malignant uterine tumors than those with benign uterine tumors (10.80 ± 1.87, P = 0.000). In contrast, the mean concentration of copper was higher in patients with malignant uterine tumors (110.37 ± 20.05 vs. 103.75 ± 14.34, P = 0.063). The serum zinc concentrations (12.73 ± 5.34 vs. 8.90 ± 2.77, P = 0.001) were higher in patients with malignant ovarian tumors. Furthermore, we found the mean serum copper levels in patients with benign ovarian tumors decreased significantly from (101.86 ± 15.44 to 86.77 ± 21.55, P = 0.002) in female patients with malignant ovarian tumors group. Conclusions Serum concentrations of copper and zinc increased in some study groups and declined in others. The examination of serum trace element concentrations in patients with ovarian and uterus tumors would provide us with insight into a better understanding of the pathogenesis of the tumors and also to distinguish between them.

Abstract
Trace elements are important components in the body and have fundamental roles in maintaining a healthy and balanced pregnancy process. Either deficiency or excess of trace elements, including selenium, iron, zinc, copper, and magnesium can lead to pregnancy complications. As a rare disorder during pregnancy of unknown aetiology, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) poses a significant risk to the fetus of perinatal mortality. ICP is a multifactorial complication of which the pathogenesis is still an enigma. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated the association of ICP with some trace elements. Evidence from retrospective studies in humans further revealed the possible contributing roles of trace elements in the pathogenesis of ICP. The published literature on the association of trace elements with ICP was reviewed. Recent advances in molecular biological techniques from animal studies have helped to elucidate the possible mechanisms by how these trace elements function in regulating oxidative reactions, inflammatory reactions and immune balance in the maternal-fetal interface, as well as the influence on hepato-intestinal circulation of bile acid. The scenario regarding the role of trace elements in the pathogenesis of ICP is still developing. The administration or depletion of these trace elements may have promising effects in alleviating the symptoms and improving the pregnancy outcomes of ICP.

Abstract
Trace elements, through their interaction with biomolecules, can play an important role in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder and protect against oxidative stress effects. The purpose of this study is to examine plasma concentration levels of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) of Algerian patients, diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and to compare these levels with those of healthy controls. The Cu/Zn ratio was calculated to explore a possible correlation between these elements and lipid peroxidation in the study groups. A total of 33 patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder and 38 healthy subjects participated in this study. Plasma copper and zinc concentrations were measured using a polarographic analyzer. The marker of plasma lipid peroxidation (Malondialdehyde: MDA) was determined by UV spectrophotometry. Plasma Cu concentrations were higher in patients compared to controls (p < 0.05), while the Zn level was significantly lower. Consequently, the Cu/Zn ratio was significantly different between patients and controls. Regarding MDA, no significant difference was noticed between the two study groups. However, in patients, a negative correlation was found between MDA and Cu/Zn ratio (r= -0.38, p= 0.027). These results suggested that an elevated Cu/Zn ratio is associated with attenuated lipid peroxidation in our bipolar patients.

Abstract
Cu is an essential micronutrient for various physiological processes in almost all human cell types. Given the critical role of Cu in a wide range of cellular processes, the local concentrations of Cu and the cellular distribution of Cu transporter proteins in the lung are essential for maintaining a steady-state internal environment. Dysfunctional Cu metabolism or regulatory pathways can lead to an imbalance in Cu homeostasis in the lungs, affecting both acute and chronic pathological processes. Recent studies have identified a new form of Cu-dependent cell death called cuproptosis, which has generated renewed interest in the role of Cu homeostasis in diseases. Cuproptosis differs from other known cell death pathways. This occurs through the direct binding of Cu ions to lipoylated components of the tricarboxylic acid cycle during mitochondrial respiration, leading to the aggregation of lipoylated proteins and the subsequent downregulation of Fe-S cluster proteins, which causes toxic stress to the proteins and ultimately leads to cell death. Here, we discuss the impact of dysregulated Cu homeostasis on the pathogenesis of various respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, idiopathic interstitial fibrosis, and lung cancer. We also discuss the therapeutic potential of targeting Cu. This study highlights the intricate interplay between copper, cellular processes, and respiratory health. Copper, while essential, must be carefully regulated to maintain the delicate balance between necessity and toxicity in living organisms. This review highlights the need to further investigate the precise mechanisms of copper interactions with infections and immune inflammation in the context of respiratory diseases and explore the potential of therapeutic strategies for copper, cuproptosis, and other related effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and the copper/zinc ratio (Cu/Zn), which have been studied in gastrointestinal disorders of humans, may facilitate disease prognosis. OBJECTIVE Evaluate the predictive potential of Cu, Zn, cobalamin, and serum amyloid A (SAA) as prognostic indicators in cats with feline panleukopenia (FPV) on admission. ANIMALS Client-owned cats diagnosed with FPV and controls. METHODS Serum Cu and Zn concentrations were assessed using the spectrophotometric method and serum concentrations of SAA and cobalamin were measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay. RESULTS On admission, survivor cats with FPV had significantly higher serum Cu and SAA concentrations and Cu/Zn ratios and significantly lower serum Zn and cobalamin concentrations than controls. Furthermore, non-survivor cats with FPV had significantly higher serum Cu and SAA concentrations and Cu/Zn ratios and significantly lower cobalamin concentrations than survivors and controls. Prognostic thresholds were calculated, with positive predictive value (PPV) for survival of 90% for Cu (≥120.3 μg/dL), 90% for Cu/Zn (≥1.34), 90% for cobalamin (≤430.4 pg/mL), and 90% for SAA (≥0.85 mg/L). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE Cu (0.93 area under curve [AUC]), Cu/Zn (0.95 AUC), cobalamin (0.98 AUC), and SAA (0.98 AUC) were excellent biomarkers for predicting prognosis in cats with FPV. Their effectiveness, as assessed by sensitivity (100%), specificity (80%), AUC (0.98), and PPV (90%) from receiver operating characteristic analysis, emphasizes the performance of cobalamin and SAA.

Abstract
Zinc (Zn) is a vital micronutrient that strengthens the immune system, aids cellular activities, and treats infectious diseases. A deficiency in Zn can lead to an imbalance in the immune system. This imbalance is particularly evident in severe deficiency cases, where there is a high susceptibility to various viral infections, including COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2. This review article examines the nutritional roles of Zn in human health, the maintenance of Zn concentration, and Zn uptake. As Zn is an essential trace element that plays a critical role in the immune system and is necessary for immune cell function and cell signaling, the roles of Zn in the human immune system, immune cells, interleukins, and its role in SARS-CoV-2 infection are further discussed. In summary, this review paper encapsulates the nutritional role of Zn in the human immune system, with the hope of providing specific insights into Zn research.

Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the serum and salivary levels of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn) and the Cu/Zn ratio and investigate the association between LOX gene variants (rs18800449 and rs2288393) and oral submucosal fibrosis (OSMF). A total of 250 subjects were included in the study: OSMF patients (n = 50), areca nut chewers without OSMF (n = 100) and controls (n = 100). Trace metals were measured using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, while LOX gene variants were genotyped using the tetra primer amplification refractory mutation system (tetra ARMS) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. The results showed significant variations in serum and salivary Cu, Zn, Fe and Cr levels and serum Mn concentrations among the three groups (p < 0.0001). Serum Cu levels were significantly higher in OSMF patients, while serum Zn levels were significantly lower. Both serum and salivary Cu/Zn ratios demonstrated a statistically significant difference (p < 0.0001) and diagnostic potential to differentiate OSMF from chewers and controls. However, LOX gene variants did not show an association between OSMF and chewers, except for rs1800449 genotypes, which showed a significant and increased risk with the AA genotype in OSMF patients compared to controls (OR = 7.58; 95%CI 2.30-24.97). The study suggests that trace elements and genetic variants may impact the etiology of OSMF. The findings may aid in early diagnosis, suitable treatment, and as a prognostic indicator for disease progression.

Abstract
It is proven that the blood concentration of antioxidants can impress the severity of viral infections, including COVID-19. However, the lack of a comprehensive study accumulating existing data regarding COVID-19 can be perceived. Therefore, this systematic review is aimed to report the association between the blood concentration of several antioxidants and the overall health condition of COVID-19 patients. We summarized the available data surrounding the serum antioxidant level in COVID-19 patients and COVID-19 outcomes. A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane, and studies that evaluated the association between antioxidants and COVID-19 outcomes were included. Of 4101 articles that were viewed in the database search, 38 articles were included after the title, abstract, and full-text review. Twenty-nine studies indicated that lower serum antioxidants are associated with worse outcomes, and one study reported no association between serum zinc (Zn) level and COVID-19 outcomes. In most cases, antioxidant deficiency was associated with high inflammatory factors, high mortality, acute kidney injury, thrombosis, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, acute respiratory distress syndrome, cardiac injury, and the need for mechanical ventilation (MV), and there was no significant association between serum antioxidants level and ICU or hospital length of stay (LOS). It seems that higher levels of antioxidants in COVID-19 patients may be beneficial to prevent disease progression. However, clinical trials are needed to confirm this conclusion.

Abstract
We systematically analyzed and attempted to discuss the possibility that deficiencies of zinc or selenium were associated with the incidence and severity of COVID-19. We searched for published and unpublished articles in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane up to 9 February 2023. And we selected healthy individuals, mild/severe, and even deceased COVID-19 patients to analyze their serum data. Data related to 2319 patients from 20 studies were analyzed. In the mild/severe group, zinc deficiency was associated with the degree of severe disease (SMD = 0.50, 95% CI 0.32-0.68, I2 = 50.5%) and we got an Egger's test of p = 0.784; but selenium deficiency was not associated with the degree of severe disease (SMD = - 0.03, 95% CI - 0.98-0.93, I2 = 96.7%). In the surviving/death group, zinc deficiency was not associated with mortality of COVID-19 (SMD = 1.66, 95%CI - 1.42-4.47), nor was selenium (SMD = - 0.16, 95%CI - 1.33-1.01). In the risk group, zinc deficiency was positively associated with the prevalence of COVID-19 (SMD = 1.21, 95% CI 0.96-1.46, I2 = 54.3%) and selenium deficiency was also positively associated with the prevalence of it (SMD = 1.16, 95% CI 0.71-1.61, I2 = 58.3%). Currently, serum zinc and selenium deficiencies increase the incidence of COVID-19 and zinc deficiency exacerbates the disease; however, neither zinc nor selenium was associated with mortality in patients with COVID-19. Nevertheless, our conclusions may change when new clinical studies are published.

Abstract
The inflammatory reaction and pathogenesis of COVID-19 may be modulated by circulating trace elements (Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn)) and Metallothioneins (MTs). Thus, the present study aimed to investigate their relationship with clinical, biochemical, and inflammatory parameters in patients with COVID-19 at the early Intensive Care Unit (ICU) phase. Critically ill patients (n = 86) were monitored from the first day of ICU admission until the third day of stay. Serum samples were used to assess mineral levels via Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and MT levels via differential pulse voltammetry. Levels of Cu and MTs were significantly decreased after 3 days (p < 0.05), increasing the prevalence of Cu-deficient values from 50% to 65.3% (p = 0.015). Fe and Zn were shown to have a predictive value for mortality and severity. The present study suggests trace element deficiency may be a risk factor during early ICU treatment of COVID-19, as it is related to different biochemical and clinical parameters, indicating a possible beneficial effect of restoring proper levels of these micronutrients.

Abstract
Background To explicate the pathogenic mechanisms of cuproptosis, a newly observed copper induced cell death pattern, in Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods Cuproptosis-related subtypes were distinguished in COVID-19 patients and associations between subtypes and immune microenvironment were probed. Three machine algorithms, including LASSO, random forest, and support vector machine, were employed to identify differentially expressed genes between subtypes, which were subsequently used for constructing cuproptosis-related risk score model in the GSE157103 cohort to predict the occurrence of COVID-19. The predictive values of the cuproptosis-related risk score were verified in the GSE163151 cohort, GSE152418 cohort and GSE171110 cohort. A nomogram was created to facilitate the clinical use of this risk score, and its validity was validated through a calibration plot. Finally, the model genes were validated using lung proteomics data from COVID-19 cases and single-cell data. Results Patients with COVID-19 had higher significantly cuproptosis level in blood leukocytes compared to patients without COVID-19. Two cuproptosis clusters were identified by unsupervised clustering approach and cuproptosis cluster A characterized by T cell receptor signaling pathway had a better prognosis than cuproptosis cluster B. We constructed a cuproptosis-related risk score, based on PDHA1, PDHB, MTF1 and CDKN2A, and a nomogram was created, which both showed excellent predictive values for COVID-19. And the results of proteomics showed that the expression levels of PDHA1 and PDHB were significantly increased in COVID-19 patient samples. Conclusion Our study constructed and validated an cuproptosis-associated risk model and the risk score can be used as a powerful biomarker for predicting the existence of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Marked inter-individual differences in the clinical manifestation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has initiated studies in the field of genetics. This review evaluates recent genetic evidence (predominantly in the last 18 months) related to micronutrients (vitamins and trace elements) and COVID-19. RECENT FINDINGS In patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), altered circulating levels of micronutrients may serve as prognostic markers of disease severity. Mendelian randomization (MR) studies did not find significant effect of variable genetically predicted levels of micronutrients on COVID-19 phenotypes, however, recent clinical studies on COVID-19 point out to vitamin D and zinc supplementation as a nutritional strategy to reduce disease severity and mortality. Recent evidence also points to variants in vitamin D receptor ( VDR ) gene, most notably rs2228570 (FokI) "f" allele and rs7975232 (ApaI) "aa" genotype as poor prognostic markers. SUMMARY Since several micronutrients were included in the COVID-19 therapy protocols, research in the field of nutrigenetics of micronutrients is in progress. Recent findings from MR studies prioritize genes involved in biological effect, such as the VDR gene, rather than micronutrient status in future research. Emerging evidence on nutrigenetic markers may improve patient stratification and inform nutritional strategies against severe COVID-19.

Abstract
The associations of circulating trace elements with sleep health have attracted increasing attention given their potential link. However, there is scant data on the relationship between serum trace elements and abnormal sleep duration patterns in cirrhosis. We aimed to investigate these associations with the purpose of identifying modifiable risk factors. The blood samples were collected from inpatients with cirrhosis, and serum levels of several trace elements were assessed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Self-reported sleep duration was categorized to short- (< 7 h/night), optimal (7-8 h/night), and long-sleep duration (> 8 h/night). The dose-response trends and associations of trace elements levels with sleep duration were determined by restricted cubic splines (RCS) and logistic regression, respectively. Cirrhotic patients with optimal sleep duration experienced the highest levels of serum Zinc (Zn) and the lowest values of copper to zinc ratio (CZr). RCS model corroborated non-linear associations of serum Zn and CZr against sleep duration. Multiple regression analysis showed that both CZr (short vs optimal sleep duration: OR 4.785, P < 0.001; long vs optimal sleep duration: OR 4.150, P = 0.019) and serum Zn levels (short vs optimal sleep duration: OR 0.985, P = 0.040; long vs optimal sleep duration: OR 0.956, P = 0.008) serve as independent risk factors for sleep duration abnormalities. In conclusion, our findings unraveled a close relationship of serum Zn and CZr with sleep duration in cirrhosis. Further trace element-based therapy such as Zn supplementation may be novel approach to reverse this sleep problem.

Abstract
BACKGROUND For the immune system to protect the body from infectious diseases such as COVID-19, it needs the ideal amount of vital trace elements. Trace element levels, especially, zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), and iron (Fe) levels, may affect how sensitive an individual is to COVID-19 and other viruses. The current study evaluated the level of those trace elements during stays in the isolation center and investigated their association with vulnerability to COVID-19. METHODS A total of 120 individuals, 49 males and 71 females aged between 20 and 60 years, were included in this study. Forty individuals infected with COVID-19, 40 individuals who had recovered from it, and 40 healthy individuals, were all evaluated and studied. By using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer, levels of Zn, Cu, and Mg were assessed for all samples, whereas levels of Mn, and Cr were determined by a flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometer. RESULTS The infected individuals had significantly lower levels of Zn, Mg, Mn, Cr, and Fe than recovered individuals and healthy control individuals (P < 0.0001). On the other hand, the total number of infected patients was found to have much higher levels of Cu than those in the recovered group and the control group. For the recovered and healthy control groups, no significant differences were observed in the levels of trace elements (P > 0.05), except for Zn (P < 0.01). Also, the findings indicated no association of trace elements with age and BMI (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION These results show that an imbalance in the levels of essential trace elements could be associated with increasing the risk of COVID-19 infection. However, additional thorough research of greater scope is required considering the severity of the infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies associate the disturbance of the Zinc (Zn) status with the severity of the disease and the inflammatory process in the critically ill patient. This decrease in Zn concentrations is an indicator of poor prognosis. Our aim was to evaluate Zn levels at admission and after four days, and to study if lower Zn levels at those days were related to a worse clinical outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS Observational cohort study at a tertiary Hospital. Recruitment period: 09/04/2020-04/24/2021. Clinical information on hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or bronchial asthma was collected. Obesity was defined as BMI ≥ 30 Kg/m2. Blood extraction was performed at admission and after 4 days. Zn was measured by atomic absorption using a flame method. Worse clinical outcome was defined as death during admission, intensive critical care unit admission or receiving supplemental oxygen through noninvasive or invasive ventilator care. RESULTS 129 subjects were invited to participate but only 100 subjects completed the survey. According to ROC curve [AUC= 0.63 (95% CI 0.60-0.66)], Zn < 79 μg/dL showed the best performance to detect a worse outcome (Sn=0.85; Sp=0.36). Patients with Zn < 79 μg/dL were older (70 vs 61 y; p = 0.002) with no differences by sex. Most patients presented with fever, dysthermic symptoms and cough, without differences between groups. Pre-existing comorbid conditions did not differ significantly between groups. Less obese subjects were found in the Zn < 79 μg/dL group (21.4 vs 43.3%, p = 0.025). In the univariate analysis, Zn < 79 μg/dL at hospital admission was related to a worse outcome (p = 0.044), but after adjusting for age, C-reactive protein, and obesity there was no difference, but a tendency towards a worse prognosis [OR 2.20 (0.63-7.70), p = 0.215]. Zn levels increased in both groups after 4 days (66.6 vs 73.1 μg/dL at admission, and 72.2 vs 80.5 μg/dL at 4th day), with ns. difference (p = 0.214). CONCLUSION Zn < 79 μg/dL at admission for a moderate to severe COVID-19 infection could be related to a worse outcome, although after adjustment for age, C-reactive protein levels and obesity, this Zn level threshold did not show statistically significant difference in the composite end point, but a tendency towards a worse prognosis. In addition, patients with the best clinical evolution showed higher serum Zn levels at 4th day after hospital admission than the patients with a worse prognosis.

Abstract
Both copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are crucial micronutrients for human growth and development. This literature review covered the last five years of available evidence on the Cu/Zn ratio in children and adolescents. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct for publications between 2017 and 2022, especially in English, although publications in other languages with abstracts in English were included. The main terms used were "copper", "zinc", "copper-zinc", and "zinc-copper" ratios. Cu and Zn determinations made in blood, plasma, or serum were included. This review comprises several cross-sectional and case-control studies with substantial results. The bibliographic search generated a compilation of 19 articles, in which 63.2% of the studies mostly reported a significantly higher Cu/Zn ratio, and 57.9% of them informed significantly lower levels of Zn. We conclude that children and adolescents with acute and chronic conditions are at greater risk of developing elevated Cu/Zn ratios, related to altered nutritional, infectious, and inflammatory status.

Abstract
Viral pathologies encompass activation of pro-oxidative pathways and inflammatory burst. Alleviating overproduction of reactive oxygen species and cytokine storm in COVID-19 is essential to counteract the immunogenic damage in endothelium and alveolar membranes. Antioxidants alleviate oxidative stress, cytokine storm, hyperinflammation, and diminish the risk of organ failure. Direct antiviral roles imply: impact on viral spike protein, interference with the ACE2 receptor, inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase 4, transmembrane protease serine 2 or furin, and impact on of helicase, papain-like protease, 3-chyomotrypsin like protease, and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Prooxidative environment favors conformational changes in the receptor binding domain, promoting the affinity of the spike protein for the host receptor. Viral pathologies imply a vicious cycle, oxidative stress promoting inflammatory responses, and vice versa. The same was noticed with respect to the relationship antioxidant impairment-viral replication. Timing, dosage, pro-oxidative activities, mutual influences, and interference with other antioxidants should be carefully regarded. Deficiency is linked to illness severity.

Abstract
Abstract
Objective Zinc and selenium levels are being investigated with increasing frequency in adult patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, levels of zinc and selenium in children with COVID-19 have not been adequately studied to date.
Methods This prospective, observational study was conducted on 146 pediatric patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and 49 healthy controls between 2020 and 2021. Normal serum zinc reference values were 0.60 to 1.20 µg/mL for children 0 to 10 years old and 0.66 to 1.10 µg/mL for children ≥11 years old. The normal range for serum selenium concentration was considered between 70 and 150 µg/L. Deficiencies were defined for values below the reference range.
Results Zinc and selenium levels were significantly lower in the COVID-19 (+) group compared with the controls (zinc: 0.7 ± 0.2 vs 0.9 ± 0.2 µg/mL, p < 0.001; selenium: 57.1 ± 9.1 vs 66.5 ± 11.4 µg/L, p < 0.01, respectively). Also, zinc and selenium levels were found to be statistically significantly lower in the hospitalized group compared with the outpatient group (zinc: 0.6 ± 0.2 vs 0.8 ± 0.2 µg/mL, p < 0.001; selenium: 52.1 ± 9.6 vs 58.8 ± 8.3 µg/L, p < 0.001). In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, selenium levels with a cutoff value of 55.50 µg/L, with 75% sensitivity and 70% specificity, and zinc levels with a cutoff value of 0.7 µg/mL, with 56% sensitivity and 53% specificity, predicted hospitalization.
Conclusion Our data showed that serum zinc and selenium levels were significantly lower in patients with COVID-19 compared with healthy control group. Also, zinc and selenium levels were found to be lower in the hospitalized group compared with the outpatient COVID-19 group.

Abstract
A 60-year-old man was admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) for a rapidly progressive respiratory failure due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. He developed numerous complications including acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring prolonged continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Enteral feeding was initiated on day 8. Despite nutritional management, there was a remarkable amyotrophy and weight loss. On day 85 in the ICU, the patient became progressively unresponsive. An extensive metabolic workup was performed, and blood results showed hyperammoniemia and hypertriglyceridemia. Plasma free carnitine level was low, as was also copper. After carnitine supplementation, the neurological condition rapidly improved, and metabolic perturbations regressed. Prolonged CRRT may be complicated by clinically significant deficiency in micronutrients and trace elements.

Abstract
Trace elements are a group of essential metals or metalloids, which are necessary for life, and present in minute amounts. Despite substantial researches highlighting the importance of trace elements in Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) diseases, a thorough evaluation of the levels of circulating trace elements is lacking. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the trace element status (Zn, Fe, Cu, Mg, and Se) in COVID-19 disease. We also assessed the relationship between circulating trace elements and COVID-19 disease severity and survival status during follow-up. We searched comprehensively MEDLINE, Web of Science, CNKI, and WangFang databases without language restriction, between November 1, 2019 and April 1, 2022. The search identified 1,566 preliminary references. A total of 49 studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review, and 42 studies were included in the final meta-analysis. Meta-analysis showed that COVID-19 patients had significantly lower circulating Zn (SMD: -0.83, 95% CI: -1.19 to -0.46, P < 0.001), Fe (SMD: -1.56, 95% CI: -2.90 to -0.21, P = 0.023), and Se (SMD: -0.75, 95% CI: -0.94 to -0.56, P < 0.001) levels than healthy controls, and circulating Zn (SMD: -0.47, 95% CI: -0.75 to -0.18, P = 0.002), Fe (SMD: -0.45, 95% CI: -0.79 to -0.12, P = 0.008), and Se (SMD: -0.27, 95% CI: -0.49 to -0.04, P = 0.020) levels were associated with the presence of severity status in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, circulating Fe levels in non-survivors were significantly lower than survivors in COVID-19 (SMD: -0.28, 95% CI: -0.44 to -0.12, P = 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in Cu and Mg levels between COVID-19 patients and controls, severity and non-severity status, and survivors and non-survivors (all P > 0.05). Taken together, COVID-19 patients displayed lower circulating levels of Zn, Fe, and Se, and their levels were associated with severity status. Moreover, circulating Fe levels may provide part of the explanation for the unfavorable survival status. Therefore, we presumed optimistically that supplements of trace elements might provide an adjutant treatment in the early stages of COVID-19. Abstract
A trace element is a chemical element with a concentration (or other measures of an amount) that is very low. The essential TEs, such as copper (Cu), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe) and the electrolyte magnesium (Mg) are among the most commonly studied micronutrients. Each element has been shown to play a distinctive role in human health, and TEs, such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu), are among the essential elements required for the organisms' well-being as they play crucial roles in several metabolic pathways where they act as enzyme co-factors, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents. Epidemics of infectious diseases are becoming more frequent and spread at a faster pace around the world, which has resulted in major impacts on the economy and health systems. Different trace elements have been reported to have substantial roles in the pathogenesis of viral infections. Micronutrients have been proposed in various studies as determinants of liver disorders, COVID-19 and T2DM risks. This review article sheds light on the roles and mechanisms of micronutrients in the pathogenesis and prevention of chronic hepatitis B, C and E, as well as Coronavirus-19 infection and type-2 diabetes mellitus. An update on the status of the aforementioned micronutrients in pre-clinical and clinical settings is also briefly summarized.

Abstract
Zinc is an essential nutrient for human health; it is involved in the catalytic, structural, and regulatory functions of the human cellular system. Different compositions of zinc, as well as its pharmaceutically acceptable salts, are available on the market. Recent studies have demonstrated the role of zinc in combating COVID-19. It has been determined that zinc prevents the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into cells by lowering the expression of ACE-2 receptors and inhibiting the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase of SARS-CoV-2. Zinc also prevents the cytokine storm that takes place after the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into the cell, via its anti-inflammatory activity. The authors believe that no study has yet been published that has reviewed the trends, inventions, and patent literature of zinc compositions to treat/prevent COVID-19. Accordingly, this review has been written in order to fill this gap in the literature. The information about the clinical studies and the published patents/patent applications was retrieved from different databases. This review covers patent literature on zinc compositions up to 31 January 2022. Many important patents/patent applications for zinc-based compositions filed by innovative universities and industries were identified. The patent literature revealed zinc compositions in combination with zinc ionophores, antioxidants, antivirals, antibiotics, hydroxychloroquine, heparin, ivermectin, and copper. Most of these studies were supported by clinical trials. The patent literature supports the potential of zinc and its pharmaceutical compositions as possible treatments for COVID-19. The authors believe that countless zinc-based compositions are still unexplored, and there is an immense opportunity to evaluate a considerable number of the zinc-based compositions for use against COVID-19.
