Activated boron nitride ultrathin nanosheets for enhanced adsorption desulfurization performance

Graphene oxide modified κ-carrageenan/sodium alginate double-network hydrogel for effective adsorption of antibiotics in a batch and fixed-bed column system

The treatment of antibiotic wastewater pollution is imminent, the studies of double-network hydrogels as adsorbents have gradually increased, it is quite important to develop a non-toxic hydrogel with excellent properties as adsorbent. In this study, a graphene oxide modified κ-carrageenan/sodium alginate (GO-κ-car/SA) gel was prepared by calcium hardening. The addition of GO nanosheets enhances the mechanical strength and anti-swelling property of the double-network hydrogel, making it possible for the application in the fixed-bed column system. The elastic modulus is twice as much as the hydrogel without GO. The maximum adsorption capacity in the experiments of the GO-κ-car/SA gel for CIP and OFL can reach 272.18 mg g^-1 and 197.39 mg g^-1, respectively. The GO-κ-car/SA gel always remains negatively charged, which means that the adsorption capacity of the gel is better in an acidic environment. In the fixed-bed column system, through Thomas fitting, the maximum adsorption capacity of the simulated OFL wastewater (200 mg L^-1) is 83.99 mg g^-1. The adsorption mechanism of antibiotics by GO-κ-car/SA gel depends on hydrogen bond, functional groups and electrostatic adsorption. The good hydrophilic properties, excellent adsorption capacity and high mechanical strength, which can ensure that the adsorbent is in full contact with the contaminants without major deformation or damage, makes the study more helpful for the further study on hydrogel in the fixed-bed column system.

Cu-Doped Boron Nitride Nanosheets for Solid-Phase Extraction and Determination of Rhodamine B in Foods Matrix

Cu-doped boron nitride nanosheets (Cu-BNNS) were first reported as promising adsorbents for the solid-phase extraction and determination of rhodamine B (RhB) dye in a food matrix. Different characterizations, including XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, and TEM, were performed to confirm the formation of the adsorbent. Then, the adsorption performance of Cu-BNNS was investigated by adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics. Multiple extraction parameters were optimized by single-factor experiments. Under optimized conditions, the recoveries in the food matrix were in the range of 89.8–95.4%, with the spiked levels of 100 ng/mL and 500 ng/mL, respectively. This novel system was expected to have great potential to detect RhB in a wide variety of real samples.

Hierarchical porous boron nitride with boron vacancies for improved adsorption performance to antibiotics

Designing atomically defective adsorbents with high specific surface area has emerged as a promising approach to improve sorption properties. Herein, hierarchical porous boron nitride nanosheets with boron vacancies (Bv-BNNSs) were in-situ synthesized via a one-step ZnCl₂-assisted strategy. Being benefitted from the dual-functional template of zinc salt, highly-active boron vacancies and abundant hierarchical pores were simultaneously generated in the Bv-BNNSs framework. By employing the boron vacancies engineering strategy, the morphological and electronic structures were controllably tuned. Meanwhile, the specific surface area was improved to as high as 1104 m²/g. Owning to the abundance of accessible surface active-sites, the sorption capacity to antibiotic tetracycline (TC) on Bv-BNNSs was boosted by 38% compared to the pristine boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs). Detailed fitting results showed that TC sorption on Bv-BNNSs obeyed the pseudo-second order kinetic equation and the Freundlich isotherm model. The pi - pi interaction with a multi-layered stacking form was proposed as the dominated sorption mechanism. Furthermore, DFT calculations verified that the interaction energy between Bv-BNNSs and TC was enhanced. The high activity, excellent selectivity, and remarkable durability of the Bv-BNNSs nanomaterial suggest the great potential in practical wastewater treatment.

Desulfurization on Boron Nitride and Boron Nitride-based Materials

Combustion of liquid fuels containing sulfur compounds is highly unfavorable due to the adverse effects caused by the resultant SO_x emission. Consequently, catalytic and adsorptive materials having the capacity to eliminate the sulfur compounds from liquid fuels are very attractive. Hexagonal boron nitride (BN), with its interesting chemical and physical properties, finds applications in diverse fields, especially in energy and environmental applications. Recently, BN and BN-based materials have gained significant interest in emerging desulfurization processes such as oxidative desulfurization and adsorptive desulfurization. In this review, BN and BN-based materials are elaborately discussed in the context of their use in various desulfurization techniques. A brief description about the different desulfurization processes is provided at the outset. The relationship between the characteristics (the defects, morphology, porosity and surface area) of BN and desulfurization efficiency is also summarized. Furthermore, the mechanistic insights regarding the action of BN materials in the desulfurization processes are discussed. With this review, the synthetic strategies for designing the novel BN-based catalysts/adsorbents for the effective desulfurization of liquid fuels can be grasped.
