Abstract
Background/Objectives: Lung cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, and drug resistance complicates its treatment. Mahanine (MH), an alkaloid from Murraya koenigii has been known for its anti-cancer properties. However, its effectiveness and mechanisms in treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain largely unexplored. The present study aimed to investigate MH's effect on drug-sensitive and drug-resistant NSCLC and its potential mechanism of action. Methods: We isolated MH from M. koenigii leaves and the purity (99%) was confirmed by HPLC, LC-MS and NMR. The antiproliferative activity of MH was determined using MTT and colony formation assays against drug-sensitive (A549 and H1299) and Taxol-resistant lung cancer cells (A549-TR). Western blot analysis was performed to determine MH's effects on various molecular targets. Anti-tumor activity of MH was determined against lung tumors developed in female NOD Scid mice injected with A549-Fluc bioluminescent cells (1.5 × 106) intrathoracically. Results: MH dose-dependently reduced the proliferation of all lung cancer cells (A549, H1299 and A549-TR), with IC50 values of 7.5, 5, and 10 µM, respectively. Mechanistically, MH arrested cell growth in the G0/G1 and G2/M phases of the cell cycle by inhibiting cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) and cell division control 2 (CDC2) and induced apoptosis through the downregulation of B-cell leukemia/lymphoma 2 (BCL2) and B-cell lymphoma-extra large (BCL-XL). The apoptotic induction capacity of MH can also be attributed to its ability to inhibit pro-oncogenic markers, including mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor receptor (MET), phosphorylated protein kinase B (p-AKT), phosphorylated mammalian target of rapamycin (p-mTOR), survivin, rat sarcoma viral oncogene (RAS), myelocytomatosis oncogene (cMYC), and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) levels. In vivo, MH (25 mg/kg b. wt.) significantly (p < 0.001) inhibited the growth of A549 lung cancer orthotopic xenografts in NOD Scid mice by 70%. Conclusions: Our study provides new mechanistic insights into MH's therapeutic potential against NSCLC.

Abstract
With the aggravation of social aging and the increase in work intensity, the prevalence of spinal degenerative diseases caused by intervertebral disc degeneration(IDD)has increased yearly, which has driven a heavy economic burden on patients and society. It is well known that IDD is associated with cell damage and degradation of the extracellular matrix. In recent years, it has been found that IDD is induced by various mechanisms (e.g., genetic, mechanical, and exposure). Increasing evidence shows that oxidative stress is a vital activation mechanism of IDD. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) could regulate matrix metabolism, proinflammatory phenotype, apoptosis, autophagy, and aging of intervertebral disc cells. However, up to now, our understanding of a series of pathophysiological mechanisms of oxidative stress involved in the occurrence, development, and treatment of IDD is still limited. In this review, we discussed the oxidative stress through its mechanisms in accelerating IDD and some antioxidant treatment measures for IDD.

Abstract
Overexpressed survivin is associated with worse survival of several types of human tumors. In this study, the antitumor activity of shikonin in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by regulating survivin pathway was investigated. Results showed that shikonin inhibited the NSCLC H1299 cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, shikonin fits well with survivin by molecular docking. Shikonin also inhibited the mRNA expression and protein level of survivin in H1299 cells. Shikonin arrested H1299 cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase by regulating CDK/cyclin family members. In addition, shikonin regulated the expression of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis- (XIAP-) mediated caspases 3 and 9, thus leading to the damage of mitochondrial membrane potential and induction of H1299 cell apoptosis. Overall, shikonin inhibited H1299 cell growth by inducing apoptosis and blocking the cell cycle. The underlying mechanism involves targeting survivin, which subsequently regulates the protein expression of XIAP/caspase 3/9, CDK2/4, and cyclin E/D1. Thus, shikonin, a survivin inhibitor, is a promising therapeutic strategy in NSCLC treatment.

Clinicopathological and Prognostic Significance of Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein (IAP) Family Members in Lung Cancer: A Meta-Analysis. Cancers (Basel) 2021; 13:cancers13164098. Abstract
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Approximately 85% is non-small-cell and 15% is small-cell lung cancer. The inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) represent a heterogeneous family of anti-apoptotic proteins, some members of which have been reported to correlate with clinical outcome in lung cancer. We screened PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for studies that investigated the prognostic value and clinicopathological features of IAPs in lung cancer. Forty-five eligible studies with 4428 patients assessed the expression of the IAPs survivin, XIAP, livin, and BRUCE. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) of 33 studies that analyzed overall survival (OS) revealed a positive correlation between survivin expression and poor prognosis. Seven studies displayed a strong association between survivin and disease recurrence. Two studies that assessed the expression of XIAP and livin, respectively, proved a significant relationship of these IAPs with poor OS. Meta-analyses of clinicopathological variables revealed a significant association between survivin and T stage, UICC stage, the presence of lymph node metastasis, and grade of differentiation. In conclusion, high expression of distinct IAPs significantly correlates with prognosis in lung cancer. Therefore, lung cancer patients might benefit from a targeted therapy against specific IAPs.

Abstract
Fluoxetine, an antidepressant, has been indicated to elicit anti-cancer response in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in vitro. However, anticancer effect and mechanism of fluoxetine in HCC and NSCLC in vivo still needs to be elucidated. In this study, we showed anticancer efficacy and inhibitory mechanism of fluoxetine on the tumor progression of HCC and NSCLC in vivo. Tumor growth was significantly inhibited with fluoxetine treatment in HCC and NSCLC in vivo. Fluoxetine obviously decreased expression of cell proliferative, anti-apoptotic, invasion-associated proteins including Cyclin-D1, survivin, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA). Importantly, fluoxetine diminished the phosphorylation of NF-κB p65 which recognized as one of the critical transcription factors in tumor progression. Inhibition of AKT or extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK) phosphorylation was linked to NF-κB inactivation in NSCLC or HCC in vitro. Furthermore, expression of AKT or ERK phosphorylation was effectively attenuated by fluoxetine treatment in NSCLC or HCC in vivo. In addition, fluoxetine also triggered extrinsic/intrinsic apoptotic signaling by activating caspase-3, -8, and -9 in HCC and NSCLC. Our findings suggest that fluoxetine may represent as a promising adjuvant for patients with HCC or NSCLC. In conclude, the results also suggested the blockage of AKT/NF-κB or ERK/NF-κB activation and the induction of apoptosis are associated with fluoxetine-inhibited tumor progression of HCC or NSCLC in vivo.

Abstract
Although novel molecular targeted drugs have been recognized as an effective therapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activating mutations, their efficacy fails to meet the expectation due to the acquired resistance in tumors. Up-regulation of the anti-apoptotic protein Survivin was shown to contribute to the resistance to EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) in EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC. However, the unorganized tumor blood vessels impeded drug penetration into tumor tissue. The resulting insufficient intracellular drug/gene delivery in drug-resistant cancer cells remarkably weakened the drug efficacy in NSCLC. In this work, a multi-functional drug delivery system AP/ES was developed by using anti-EGFR aptamer (Apt)-modified polyamidoamine to co-deliver erlotinib and Survivin-shRNA. Chloroquine (CQ) was used in combination with AP/ES to normalize tumor vessels for sufficient drug/gene delivery to overcome drug resistance in NSCLC cells. The obtained AP/ES possessed desired physicochemical properties, good biostability, controlled drug release profiles, and strong selectivity to EGFR-mutated NSCLC mediated by Apt. CQ not only enhanced endosomal escape ability of AP/ES for efficient gene transfection to inhibit Survivin, but also showed strong vessel-normalization ability to improve tumor microcirculation, which further promoted drug delivery and enhanced drug efficacy in erlotinib-resistant NSCLC cells. Our innovative gene/drug co-delivery system in combination with CQ showed a promising outcome in fighting against erlotinib resistance both in vitro and in vivo. This work indicates that normalization of tumor vessels could help intracellular erlotinib/Survivin-shRNA delivery and the down-regulation of Survivin could act synergistically with erlotinib for reversal of erlotinib resistance in EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE NSCLC patients who benefited from EGFR-TKIs inevitably developed acquired resistance. Previous research focused on synthesis of new generation of molecular targeted drugs that could irreversibly inhibit EGFR with a particular gene mutation to overcome drug resistance. However, they failed to inhibit EGFR with other gene mutations. Activation of bypass signaling pathway and the changes of tumor microenvironment are identified as two of the mechanisms of acquired resistance to EGFR-TKIs. We therefore constructed multifunctional gene/drug co-delivery nanocomplexes AP/ES co-formulated with chloroquine that could target the both two mechanisms. We found that chloroquine not only enhanced endosomal escape ability of AP/ES for efficient gene transfection to inhibit Survivin, but also showed strong vessel-normalization ability to improve tumor microcirculation, which further promoted drug delivery into tumor tissue and enhanced drug efficacy in erlotinib-resistant NSCLC.

Abstract
Inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family comprises a group of endogenous proteins that function as main regulators of caspase activity and cell death. They are considered the main culprits in evasion of apoptosis, which is a fundamental hallmark of carcinogenesis. Overexpression of IAP proteins has been documented in various solid and hematological malignancies, rendering them resistant to standard chemotherapeutics and radiation therapy and conferring poor prognosis. This observation has urged their exploitation as therapeutic targets in cancer with promising pre-clinical outcomes. This review describes the structural and functional features of IAP proteins to elucidate the mechanism of their anti-apoptotic activity. We also provide an update on patterns of IAP expression in different tumors, their impact on treatment response and prognosis, as well as the emerging investigational drugs targeting them. This aims at shedding the light on the advances in IAP targeting achieved to date, and encourage further development of clinically applicable therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
Background In recent years, survivin expression had been investigated as a prognostic biomarker for renal cell carcinoma (RCC), however, the results were conflicting. This study was aimed to explore the association between survivin expression and clinicalpathological features and the prognostic value for cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) in RCC. Results Eleven studies with 1,697 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed that survivin expression was associated with higher tumor grade (OR=4.25, 95%CI: 3.04-5.95, p<0.001), advanced tumor stage (OR=3.83, 95%CI: 2.01-7.3, p<0.001) and lymph node metastasis (OR=4.19, 95%CI: 2.34-7.52, p<0.001), but had no association with age, gender or distant metastasis. In addition, survivin expression was also correlated with poor CSS (HR=2.08, 95%CI: 1.07-4.05, p=0.032) and poor OS (HR=2.28, 95%CI: 1.57-3.33, p<0.001). Materials and Methods Literature was searched by PubMed, Embase and Web of Science. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were extracted from eligible studies. Fixed or random effects model were used to calculate pooled HRs and 95%CIs according to heterogeneity. Conclusions This study demonstrated that survivin expression was associated with more aggressive clinical features and predicted poor CSS and OS in patients with RCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer as well as the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Observational studies on the prognostic role of SOX-2 in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are controversial. METHODS To clarify the impact of SOX-2 in NSCLC survival, we performed this meta-analysis that included eligible studies. The combined hazard ratios and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated in terms of overall survival. RESULTS A total of seven studies with 1,944 patients were evaluable for this meta-analysis. The studies were categorized by histology, disease stage and patient race. Our results suggested that SOX-2 overexpression had a favorable impact on survival of patients with NSCLC, the HR (95% CI) was 0.57 (0.48 to 0.65). However, highly significant heterogeneity was detected among these studies (I(2)=76.7%, P=0.000). CONCLUSIONS SOX-2 overexpression indicates a favorable prognosis for patients with NSCLC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prognostic role of survivin in esophageal cancer (EC) remains controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to clarify the association of survivin with survival in EC patients. METHODS Relevant studies published up to November 2014 were identified using PubMed and Embase. Only studies in which survivin was detected through immunohistochemical staining were included. STATA 12.0 was used in this meta-analysis. RESULTS A total of 9 studies, which comprised 610 patients, were included in the meta-analysis. The combined hazard ratio (HR) of 1.76 (95% CI, 1.40-2.21; P<0.001) suggests that survivin overexpression in EC patients was significantly associated with poor overall survival. Moreover, the results showed a significant relationship between overall survival and survivin expression was also displayed in studies with a non-Asian country (HR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.30-2.35), patient number ≥ 50 (HR, 1.86; 95% CI, 1.57-2.20), the cut-off level ≥ 5% (HR, 1.43; 95% CI, 0.94-2.17) and the esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (HR, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.43-2.30). However, combined odds ratio of survivin indicated that survivin overexpression has no correlation with stage, grade of differentiation, lymph node status, depth of invasion and distant metastasis of EC (P>0.05). CONCLUSION Survivin overexpression is associated with poor prognosis in EC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational studies on the prognostic role of programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are controversial. METHODS To clarify the impact of PD-L1 in NSCLC survival, we performed this meta-analysis that included eligible studies. The combined hazard ratios (HR) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated in terms of overall survival. RESULTS A total of five studies with 877 patients were evaluable for this meta-analysis. Our results suggested that PD-L1 overexpression had a poor impact on survival of patients with NSCLC, the HR (95% CI) was 1.43 (1.24-1.63) overall, 1.51 (1.24-1.7954) in Asian patients, 1.35 (1.08-1.63) in non-Asian patients. Moreover, there was no heterogeneity between the studies. CONCLUSIONS PD-L1 overexpression indicates a poor prognosis for patients with NSCLC.

Abstract
AIM The chromosomal passenger complex (CPC) acts as a key modulator for mitosis and cell cytokinesis. High levels of CPC proteins are frequently observed in multiple cancers and are correlated with more progressive malignant behaviors. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether CPC components or their combinations could be used to assess the clinical risk of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS The expression levels of four CPC proteins - aurora B kinase (AURKB), borealin, inner centromere protein (INCENP), and survivin - were evaluated using immunohistochemistry in an independent cohort of NSCLC specimens. A molecular predictor model was developed based on the combination of the four CPC proteins. RESULTS All the CPC components were overexpressed in NSCLC tumors compared with their paired adjacent normal lung tissues. Survivin overexpression was significantly correlated with late tumor stage (P=0.0166). High expressions of AURKB, INCENP, and survivin, but not borealin, were associated with shorter survival in patients with NSCLC. The constructed 4-CPC-gene model divided the cohort into two different subgroups with significantly different prognoses (hazard ratio, HR =2.8915 [95% confidence interval, CI: 1.5187-5.5052]; P=0.0013) and was retained as an independent prognostic factor in multivariate analysis (HR =2.4398 [95% CI: 1.2631-4.7127], P=0.0082). Moreover, the 4-CPC-gene model demonstrated a higher predictive ability for overall survival than each individual CPC biomarker. CONCLUSION Taken together, our study suggests that a molecular prognostic model based on simultaneous detection of CPC components could serve as a complement to current clinical risk stratification approaches for patients with NSCLC.

Abstract
Survivin is highly expressed in fetal tissue and is completely absent in terminally differentiated cells, but its re-expression has been observed in most human tumors. Presently, we aimed to analyze the possible impact of the survivin gene (-31G > C, rs 9904341) promoter polymorphism on the expression profile of survivin gene and ultimately the role of survivin re-expression in the development and progression of non-small cell lung cancer. A case-control study of 100 non-small cell lung cancer patients and 100 cancer-free healthy controls was conducted. Survivin gene promoter polymorphism was analyzed by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) technique, and the survivin expression profile was evaluated using quantitative real-time PCR assay. Compared to the survivin GG genotype, odd ratio of 3.2 (95 % CI 4.8-25.9, p = 0.004) was found to be associated to homozygous CC genotype with 15-fold increase of survivin gene expression in non-small cell lung cancer patients. Significant trend of increase in survivin expression was observed with the increase in severity of the disease. Patients with survivin (-31CC) genotype had significantly shorter overall survival compared to survivin (-31GG) genotype carriers. In addition, advanced disease status and significant poor overall survival were also reflected by patients with higher-fold increase in survivin gene expression. In conclusion, present study demonstrated that survivin (-31G > C) polymorphism may contribute to the risk of developing non-small cell lung cancer in Indian population. Survivin (-31CC) genotype was associated with significantly increased survivin gene expression and ultimately may contribute in the poor clinical outcome of non-small cell lung cancer patients, suggesting its possible significance in the development and progression of non-small cell lung cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational studies on the prognostic role of thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are controversial. METHODS To clarify the impact of TTF-1 in NSCLC survival, we performed this meta-analysis that included eligible studies. The combined hazard ratios and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated in terms of overall survival. RESULTS A total of 17 studies with 2235 patients were evaluable for this meta-analysis. The studies were categorized by histology, disease stage and patient race. Our results suggested that TTF-1 overexpression had a favorable impact on survival of patients with NSCLC, the HR (95% CI) was 0.49 (0.42 to 0.55) overall, 0.46 (0.38-0.54) in Asian patients, 0.52 (0.42-0.63) in non-Asian patients, 0.45 (0.38-0.52) in adenocarcinoma, 0.63 (0.39-0.86) in stage I NSCLC, and 0.43 (0.33-0.53) in stage IIIb-IV NSCLC. The data collected were not sufficient to determine the prognostic value of VEGF in patients with squamous cell lung carcinomas. But there was a high heterogeneity between the studies. CONCLUSION TTF-1 overexpression indicates a favorable prognosis for patients with NSCLC, this effect appears also significant when the analysis is restricted in lung AC patients, stage I and stage IIIb-IV NSCLC.

Abstract
Survivin, a structurally unique protein expressed in most common human neoplasms, is thought to support cell cycle progression and suppress apoptosis. Survivin expression is highly correlated with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and poor prognosis. In this retrospective study of banked pathology tissue of patients with advanced NSCLC, we tested for correlations of N-survivin expression in tumor tissues and responsiveness to treatment with platinum-based regimens containing paclitaxel or docetaxel. The 48 patients with NSCLC included 32 (66.7 %) males and 16 (33.3 %) females. Mean age at diagnosis was 59.4 years (range 36-83 years), and median follow-up time was 20.4 months (range 3.4-59.0 months). Patients with high tumor N-survivin expression had significantly better responses to taxane-platinum chemotherapy than those with low tumor N-survivin expression (P < 0.001). Adjusted multivariate modeling found high tumor N-survivin expression to be an independent prognostic factor for a clinical response to chemotherapy (high vs. low, OR 6.14, 95 % CI 1.62-23.29; P = 0.008). Median overall survival differed significantly between those with high tumor N-survivin expression who did/did not respond to chemotherapy and between those with low tumor N-survivin expression who did/did not respond to chemotherapy (P < 0.05). Tumor N-survivin expression shows promise as a predictive biomarker in the chemotherapy setting as a surrogate marker of high proliferation status.

Abstract
Cancer is typically a consequence of imbalance between cell death and proliferation in a way favorable to cell proliferation and survival. Most conventional cancer therapies are based on targeting rapidly growing cancerous cells to block growth or enhance cell death, thereby, restoring the balance between these processes. In many instances, malignancies that develop resistance to current treatment modalities, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy often present the greatest challenge in subsequent management of the patient. Studies have shown that under normal circumstances, cells utilize different death mechanisms, such as apoptosis (programmed cell death), autophagy, mitotic catastrophe, and necrosis to maintain homeostasis and physiological integrity of the organism, but these processes often appear to be altered in cancer. Thus, in recent years developing various strategies for administration of cytotoxic chemotherapeutics in combination with apoptosis-sensitizing reagents is receiving more emphasis. Here, we review the properties of the anti-apoptotic protein, survivin, a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family and the clinical feasibility and anti-cancer potential of drugs targeting this protein. We also discuss some key points and concerns that should be taken into consideration while developing drugs that target apoptotic proteins, such as survivin.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the predictive role and association of nuclear survivin and the DNA double-strand breaks repair genes in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC): DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs), Ku heterodimeric regulatory complex 70-KD subunit (Ku70) and ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM). METHODS The protein expression of nuclear survivin, DNA-PKcs, Ku70 and ATM were investigated using immunohistochemistry in tumors from 256 patients with surgically resected NSCLC. Furthermore, we analyzed the correlation between the expression of nuclear survivin, DNA-PKcs, Ku70 and ATM. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the prognostic factors that inuenced the overall survival and disease-free survival of NSCLC. RESULTS The expression of nuclear survivin, DNA-PKcs, Ku70 and ATM was significantly higher in tumor tissues than in normal tissues. By dichotomizing the specimens as expressing low or high levels of nuclear survivin, nuclear survivin correlated significantly with the pathologic stage (P = 0.009) and lymph node status (P = 0.004). The nuclear survivin levels were an independent prognostic factor for both the overall survival and the disease-free survival in univariate and multivariate analyses. Patients with low Ku70 and DNA-PKcs expression had a greater benefit from radiotherapy than patients with high expression of Ku70 (P = 0.012) and DNA-PKcs (P = 0.02). Nuclear survivin expression positively correlated with DNA-PKcs (P<0.001) and Ku70 expression (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Nuclear survivin may be a prognostic factor for overall survival in patients with resected stage I-IIIA NSCLC. DNA-PKcs and Ku70 could predict the effect of radiotherapy in patients with NSCLC. Nuclear survivin may also stimulates DNA double-strand breaks repair by its interaction with DNA-PKcs and Ku70.

Abstract
Survivin is a member of the inhibitors of apoptosis and frequently overexpressed in various cancer cells. Overexpression of survivin in lung cancer cells attenuates antitumor effect of tyrosine kinase inhibitors. However, data from the previous studies on the clinicopathologic implication of survivin in non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) are inconsistent. We investigated the expression of survivin in 373 cases of surgically resected NSCLC. Correlations between the expression of survivin and clinicopathologic, molecular features and prognostic significance were analyzed. In adenocarcinoma, the increased expression of survivin was associated with the presence of vascular invasion, lymph node metastasis, and tumor recurrences, but we didn't find any correlation with survivin expression and clinicopathological parameters in squamous cell carcinoma. Patients with high survivin expression had significantly shorter disease-free survival (DFS; 42.2 vs. 58.8 months; p = 0.001) and shorter overall survival (OS; 60.8 vs. 71.5 months; p = 0.009) than those with low survivin expression group in adenocarcinoma. In squamous cell carcinoma, the expression of survivin was not associated with prognosis of the patients (DFS; 48.9 vs. 48.7 months; p = 0.837, OS; 61.0 vs. 62.4 months; p = 0.771). Multivariate analysis confirmed that survivin was an independent poor prognostic factor in adenocarcinoma (DFS: hazard ratio (HR), 1.687; 95 % confidence interval (CI), 1.123-2.532; p = 0.012; OS: HR, 1.965; 95 % CI, 1.108-3.486; p = 0.021). There was no statistically significant difference in the expression of survivin among different molecular subgroups (p > 0.05). Our results suggest that survivin is an independent negative prognostic factor in adenocarcinoma, but not in squamous cell carcinoma. The different prognostic roles played by survivin in adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma highlights the biological differences between these two histologic types.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A number of studies have investigated the association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and the prognosis of gastric cancer (GC), with inconsistent and inconclusive results. We performed a meta-analysis to derive a more precise estimation of the association. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane and Chinese wanfang databases was performed with the last search updated on February 19, 2013. The hazard ratio (HR) and its 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were used to assess the strength of association. A total of 12 studies including 2454 patients with GC were involved in this meta-analysis. The pooled HR was 0.71 (95%CI: 0.57-0.87; P = 0.001) for OS and 0.60 (95%CI: 0.30-1.18; P = 0.139) for DFS in GC patients, respectively. The protective role of H. pylori infection in the prognosis of GC was also observed among different subgroups stratified by ethnicity, statistical methodology, H. pylori evaluation method and quality assessment. There was no evidence of publication bias. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE This meta-analysis suggests a protective role for H. pylori infection in the prognosis of GC. The underlying mechanisms need to be further elucidated, which could provide new therapeutic approaches for GC.

BACKGROUND Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) has been implicated in tumorigenesis and metastasis, and it presumably mediates the proliferation of endothelial cells and promotes vascular permeability. However, the prognostic value of COX-2 overexpression in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains controversial. METHODS A systematic review of eligible studies with meta-analysis was performed to quantitatively review the correlation of COX-2 overexpression with survival in patients with NSCLC. RESULTS We conducted a final analysis of 1,892 patients from 16 studies. The studies were categorized by histology, disease stage, patient race and laboratory techniques used. Combined hazard ratios (HR) suggested that COX-2 overexpression was not associated with a significant impact on survival, the HR (95% CI) was 0.90 (95% CI: 0.76-1.04) overall, 0.99 (0.71-1.26) in Asian patients, 0.87 (0.71-1.03) in non-Asian patients, 0.63 (0.33-0.93) in adenocarcinoma, 1.42 (1.02-1.81) in stage I NSCLC, 0.83 (0.72-1.08) in NSCLC by IHC, 3.28 (1.48-5.13) in NSCLC by RT-PCR. CONCLUSIONS COX-2 overexpression seems to have no significant impact on survival of NSCLC patients. However, the statistically significant was found in stage I NSCLC, suggesting that COX-2 expression could be useful at early stages to distinguish those with a worse prognosis.

Abstract
Survivin is expressed in lung cancer and in most cancer tissues and has a significant impact on prognosis. This work aimed to comparatively assess survivin expression and significance in Non-Small (NSCLC) and Small Cell Lung Cancers (SCLC). Sixty-five NSCLC and 35 SCLC samples were analyzed by semi-quantitative real-time RT-PCR. Survivin mRNA levels were significantly higher in tumors than in normal tissue, and in SCLC than in NSCLC samples. Immunohistochemistry and FISH analyses were performed in 59 and 26 tumor specimens, respectively. In SCLC survivin was only present in cytoplasm, while in some NSCLC cases it also showed nuclear or mixed patterns. FISH analysis did not disclose survivin gene amplification, except for one NSCLC case. Finally, 90 samples were genotyped for the -31G/C SNP of survivin promoter by direct sequencing; the -31G/C SNP genotype status showed a significant association only with nodal NSCLC metastasis, but not with survivin expression in any tumor group. A better prognosis was correlated to higher levels of survivin mRNA and to the presence of at least one G allele at -31 SNP in NSCLC, while these parameters did not correlate with overall survival in SCLC. Moreover, this SNP would appear to have no effect on the risk of lung cancer in our samples. The different prognostic role played by survivin in NSCLC and SCLC highlights the biological differences between these lung tumor histotypes and stresses the need to clarify the molecular pathways leading to their neoplastic transformation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of the nuclear protein survivin in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains controversial. To clarify the association of survivin with survival in NSCLC, we performed a meta-analysis of the literature with meta-analysis. METHODS Trials were selected for further analysis if they provided an independent assessment of nuclear survivin in NSCLC and reported the survival data in the context of survivin status. A total of 7 trials, which comprised 823 patients, were included in the meta-analysis. Sensitivity analyses were conducted using the patient's disease stage, IHC cutoff value, and ethnicity. RESULTS The combined hazard ratio (HR) of 1.54 [95% CI, 0.79-3.02; test for heterogeneity p<0.001] suggests that high nuclear survivin expression has no impact on patient survival. However, when the studies were restricted to Caucasian patients, high levels of nuclear survivin expression were correlated with reduced survival (HR 2.38, 95% CI=1.60-3.52; p=0.189 for heterogeneity). In addition, the heterogeneity disappeared when the analysis was restricted to Caucasians. CONCLUSION Nuclear survivin expression is associated with poor prognosis for Caucasian NSCLC patients.

Abstract
Among new biological markers that could become useful prognostic factors for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Survivin is one of the most commonly over-expressed oncogenes, however, its role in NSCLC remains controversial. We performed a systematic review of the literature with meta-analysis to clarify this issue. Electronic databases were used to identify published studies before August 2011. Pooled hazard ratio (HR) with 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI) was used to estimate the strength of the association of survivin expression with survival of NSCLC patients. Heterogeneity and publication bias were also assessed. Overall 29 relevant published studies including 2,517 lung cancer patients were identified from electronic databases. We found that overexpression of survivin in NSCLC patients might be a poor prognostic factor for survival 1.95 (95 % CI: 1.65-2.29; P < 0.001). Heterogeneity testing indicated that there was heterogeneity among studies. When stratified by histology types, the heterogeneity was absent. We should point out that the publication bias may partly account for the result, but the conclusion might not be affected deeply by the publication bias. When we accounted for publication bias using the trim and fill method, the results remained significant (HR = 1.71, 95 % CI: 1.44-2.02, P < 0.001), suggesting the stability of our results. Therefore, our study suggested that survivin overexpression had a poor prognosis value in patients with NSCLC.

Abstract
Background The prognostic significance of survivin for survival of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains controversial. Thus, meta-analysis of the literatures was performed in order to demonstrate its expression impact on ESCC clinicopathological features and prognosis. Methodology Relevant literatures were searched using PubMed, EMBASE and Medline Databases. Revman5.0 software was used to pool eligible studies and summary hazard ratio (HR). Correlation between survivin expression and clinicopathological features of ESCC was analyzed. Principal Findings Final analysis of 523 patients from 7 eligible studies was performed. Combined HR of survivin location in nuclei suggested that survivin expression has an unfavorable impact on ESCC patients' survival (n = 277 in 3 studies; HR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.45–2.96; Z = 4.69; P<0.0001). Nevertheless, combined HR of survivin location in cytoplasm displayed that survivin expression has no significance for prognosis of ESCC patients (n = 113 in 2 studies; HR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.96–5.69; Z = 0.04; P = 0.97); Combined odds ratio (OR) of survivin location in cytoplasm indicated that survivin expression is associated with ESCC advanced stage (n = 113 in 2 studies; OR = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.14–0.93; Z = 2.10; P = 0.04). Whereas, combined OR of survivin location in nuclei exhibited that survivin over-expression has no correlation with cell differentiation grade, lymph node status, depth of invasion, stage, and metastasis of ESCC. Conclusions This study showed that survivin expression detected by immunohistochemistry seems to be associated with a worse prognosis of ESCC patients. Survivin subcellular location may be an important factor impacting on ESCC development. Larger prospective studies should be performed to evaluate the status of survivin in predicting prognosis of patients with ESCC.

Abstract
PURPOSE The potential prognostic value of survivin in resected non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is variably reported. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of literatures evaluating survivin expression in resected NSCLC as a prognostic indicator. METHODS Relevant literatures were identified using PubMed, EMBASE and Chinese Biomedicine Databases. We present the results of a meta-analysis of the association between survivin expression and overall survival (OS) in NSCLC patients. Studies were pooled and summary hazard ratios (HR) were calculated. Subgroup analyses and publication bias were also conducted. RESULTS We performed a final analysis of 2703 patients from 28 evaluable studies. Combined HRs suggested that survivin overexpression had an unfavorable impact on NSCLC patients' survival with no evidence of any significant publication bias (HR = 2.03, 95%CI: 1.78-2.33, Egger's test, P = 0.24) and no severe heterogeneity between studies (I² = 26.9%). Its effect also appeared significant when stratified according to the studies categorized by histological type, HR estimate, patient race, cutoff point (5%, 10%), detection methods and literature written language except for disease stage. Survivin was identified as a prognostic marker of advanced-stage NSCLC (HR = 1.93, 95%CI: 1.49-2.51), but not early-stage NSCLC (HR = 1.97, 95%CI: 0.76-5.14), in spite of the combined data being relatively small. CONCLUSION This study shows that survivin expression appears to be a pejorative prognostic factor in terms of overall survival in surgically treated NSCLC. Large prospective studies are now needed to confirm the clinical utility of survivin as an independent prognostic marker.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Angiogenesis is an essential process in cancer growth maintenance, and metastasis. Angiopoietin-2 promotes tumor angiogenesis by priming the vasculature and potentiating the effects of cytokines at the front of active neovascularization. Enhanced expression of angiopoietin-2 has been reported in lung cancer tissue. Survivin is one of the inhibitors of apoptosis protein that has been shown to play a key role in cancer progression, and in tumor angiogenesis. Also plays a key role in tumor cell resistance to anticancer agents and ionizing radiation. AIM To measure the serum levels of angiopoietin-2 and survivin as possible angiogenic factors in lung cancer patients with the assessment of their interrelationships and clinical significance. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with lung cancer as NSCLC (n=70) and healthy volunteers (n=10) were enrolled. Serum angiopoietin-2 and survivin concentrations were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELIZA). RESULTS Median serum angiopoietin-2 levels with lung cancer (2730pg/mL) ranged from 1171 to 6541pg/mL was higher than the median of the control group (1795pg/mL) ranged from 1076 to 2730/mL, p<0.001. Median serum survivin levels were also higher in patients with lung cancer (53.0pg/mL) ranged from 39.3 to 96.3pg/mL than the median of the control group (48.8pg/mL) ranged from 38.0 to 74.6pg/mL, but did not reach statistical significance p=0.206. In all patients with lung cancer, serum angiopoietin-2 was not significantly correlated with survivin (r=0.073, p=0.657). Neither serum angiopoietin-2 nor survivin showed significant relation with the serum angiopoietin-2 or survivin levels depending on the cell types, stage progression, and metastasis among the patients with NSCLC. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that serum angiopoietin-2 is a useful marker for the diagnosis of NSCLC by ELIZA technique.

Abstract
Lung cancer is one of the most frequently occurring neoplasms and usually has a poor prognosis because most of the patients present with advanced or metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. Numerous prognostic factors (PFs) have been studied, but the two most prominent, having both prognostic and operational values, are disease stage and performance status. Even if the literature on PFs in lung cancer is impressive, the number of publications specifically dealing with PFs in stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is limited. We reviewed the literature on this topic and separated the available information into three groups: conventional PFs, metabolic criteria (standardized uptake value [SUV] measured on(18)F-FDG-PET) and new biomarkers. Performance status and the distinction between stage IIIA and IIIB confirmed their prognostic value in stage III NSCLC. Other conventional PFs have been suggested such as age, weight loss, response to treatment and some characteristics describing the locoregional extension of the tumour. There is a place for the SUV as a PF for survival in early NSCLC, but its role in stage III NSCLC has to be further assessed. Some new biomarkers involved in cell cycle regulation or in apoptosis have been shown to have potential value. Their role needs to be confirmed in large prospective studies including conventional PFs to determine their independent value as a PF in stage III NSCLC. In conclusion, few PFs have been well evaluated in stage III NSCLC. New studies, taking into account the modifications derived from the 7th international staging system of the UICC, have to be performed.

Abstract
This study was designed to determine the level of survivin expression and its clinical significance as a prognostic factor in gastrointestinal stromal sarcoma (GIST). Twenty patients (12 males and 8 females) ranging in age from 25 to 72, with a median age of 53 were evaluated. Failure of TKI treatment was higher in the survivin-positive group (p=0.06). The rate of metastasis was significantly higher in the survivin positive group vs. the negative group (80% vs. 30%, p=0.18). The median overall survival (OS) time was 114 (range 29-199)months, and the median disease-free survival (DFS) time was 88 (range 40-135) months. The median progression-free survival (PFS) time was 40 (range 24-55) months. Further, a comparison of patients with survivin positive versus negative tumors, revealed no significant difference for OS, DFS, and PFS (p=0.45, p=0.19, p=0.55, respectively), number of mitoses in 50 HPF (p=0.14), and tumor size (p=0.94). In conclusion, survivin was highly expressed in GISTs, although we found no correlation between survivin expression and PFS, DFS and OS, survivin may be a predictive marker in GISTs for disease progression. We believe that additional studies are warranted to determine the clinical significance of survivin expression as a prognostic or predictive marker in patients with GIST.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Ritonavir is a potential therapeutic agent in lung cancer, but its targets in lung adenocarcinoma are unknown, as are candidate biomarkers for its activity. METHODS RNAi was used to identify genes whose expression affects ritonavir sensitivity. Synergy between ritonavir, gemcitabine, and cisplatin was tested by isobologram analysis. RESULTS Ritonavir inhibits growth of K-ras mutant lung adenocarcinoma lines A549, H522, H23, and K-ras wild-type line H838. Ritonavir causes G0/G1 arrest and apoptosis. Associated with G0/G1 arrest, ritonavir down-regulates cyclin-dependent kinases, cyclin D1, and retinoblastoma protein phosphorylation. Associated with induction of apoptosis, ritonavir reduces survivin messenger RNA and protein levels more than twofold. Ritonavir inhibits phosphorylation of c-Src and signal transducer and activator of transcription protein 3, which are important events for survivin gene expression and cell growth, and induces cleavage of PARP1. Although knock down of survivin, c-Src, or signal transducer and activator of transcription protein 3 inhibits cell growth, only survivin knock down enhances ritonavir inhibition of growth and survivin overexpression promotes ritonavir resistance. Ritonavir was tested in combination with gemcitabine or cisplatin, exhibiting synergistic and additive effects, respectively. The combination of ritonavir/gemcitabine/cisplatin is synergistic in the A549 line and additive in the H522 line, at clinically feasible ritonavir concentrations (<10 μM). CONCLUSIONS Ritonavir is of interest for lung adenocarcinoma therapeutics, and survivin is an important target and potential biomarker for its sensitivity. Ritonavir cooperation with gemcitabine/cisplatin might be explained by involvement of PARP1 in repair of cisplatin-mediated DNA damage and survivin in repair of gemcitabine-mediated double-stranded DNA breaks.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Survivin is an apoptotic inhibitor, involves in regulation of apoptosis and cell cycle progression, and its polymorphisms may influence the development and progression of cancer. This study evaluated the impact of the survivin gene polymorphisms on survival of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. METHODS In this case-cohort follow-up study, a total of 568 NSCLC patients were investigated and 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms in survivin gene were genotyped by using the Illumina GoldenGate platform. RESULTS During the maximum of 72 months of follow-up, 314 (55.11%) deaths were observed. After adjusting for age, gender, smoking status, histology, stage, surgical operation, and chemotherapy or radiotherapy status, Cox hazard proportional model suggested that four single nucleotide polymorphisms had statistically significant impacts on NSCLC survival (rs3764383, AG/GG versus AA, hazard ratio [HR] = 0.78, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.62-0.99; rs8073069, GG versus CG/CC, HR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.16-2.67; rs4789551, GG versus AG/AA, HR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.08-3.86; rs1042489, GG versus AG/AA, HR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.03-1.83). Further combined analysis showed that the high risk group (3-4 unfavorable loci) presented a 1.84-fold (95% CI: 1.22-2.77) increased risk compared with low risk group (0-2 unfavorable loci). Among 185 stage III to IV patients who received only chemotherapy, only the potentially functional rs8073069 still had a significantly increased risk on the prognosis of NSCLC (GG versus CG/CC, HR = 2.06, 95% CI: 1.10-3.87). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that polymorphisms in survivin may be a genetic modifier for NSCLC prognosis in this Chinese population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Workers chronically exposed to hexavalent chromium have elevated risk of lung cancer. Our study investigates the incidence of lung cancer types, age at onset of the disease, and survival time among chromium exposed workers with respect to the expression of anti-apoptotic p53 and pro-apoptotic survivin proteins. MATERIAL AND METHODS 67 chromium exposed workers and 104 male controls diagnosed with lung cancer were analyzed. The mean exposure time among workers was 16.7 ±10.0(SD) years (range 1- 41 years). To investigate the possible regulation of survivin by p53 we examined the expression of both proteins using immohistochemical visualization. RESULTS Chromium exposure significantly decreases the age of onset of the disease by 3.5 years (62.2 ±9.1 in the exposed group vs. 65.7 ±10.5 years in controls; P=0.018). Small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) amounted for 25.4% of all cases in chromium exposed workers and for 16.3% in non-exposed individuals. The mean survival time in the exposed group was 9.0 ±12.7 vs. 12.1 ±21.9 months in controls, but this difference was not significant. Survivin was predominantly expressed in both cell nucleus and cytoplasm, whereas p53 was expressed in the nucleus. There was a negative correlation between survivin and p53 expression. A decreased intensity of expression and fewer cells positive for survivin was detected in SCLC compared with other types of lung cancer. p53 was expressed in 94.1% and survivin in 79.6% of the samples analyzed. CONCLUSION The study calls attention to decreased expression of survivin, as opposed to p53, in small cell lung carcinoma.

Abstract
Lung cancer is a devastating disease with a poor prognosis. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) represent different forms of lung cancer that are associated with distinct genetic causes and display different responses to therapy in the clinic. Whereas SCLC is often sensitive to chemotherapy at start of treatment, NSCLC are less chemo-sensitive. In NSCLC different histological subtypes are distinguished and increasing efforts are made to identify subtypes that respond to specific therapies, such as those harbouring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations that have benefit from treatment with EGFR inhibitors. Targeting of the apoptotic machinery represents another approach that aims to selectively kill cancer cells while sparing normal ones. Here we describe different ways that are currently explored to induce apoptosis in lung cancer cells, specifically pathways controlled by TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), BCL-2 family members and apoptosis inhibitory proteins (IAPs). Preclinical studies are discussed and for some agents results from early clinical studies and future perspectives are considered.

Abstract
Recently, several reports have suggested that HMGB1 (the high-mobility group box-1) plays a key role in tumor angiogenesis through multiple mechanisms, including up-regulation of proangiogenic factors. This study was conducted to investigate the prognostic role and the effects of chemotherapy on serum (ELISA) angiogenic factors: HMGB1, survivin and VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) in patients with advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study entered 40 patients (31 man) and 15 healthy volunteers (control group). Peripheral blood samples were taken before and after four cycles of chemotherapy. The mean serum HMGB1 and VEGF levels were significantly higher in patients with advanced NSCLC than in controls (p=0.024, p=0.028, respectively). The levels of survivin in NSCLC patients were comparable to controls. No correlation was found between HMGB1, survivin and VEGF concentrations and the histological type and staging of lung cancer. Similarly, no correlation was revealed between the concentrations of HMGB1, survivin and VEGF and the effect of chemotherapy. However, in patients with NSCLC, HMGB1 positevely correlated with survivin (R=0.814, p=0.007) before chemotherapy, and negatively with VEGF (R=-0.841, p=0.035) after chemotherapy. When the cut-off values of serum HMGB1, survivin and VEGF (2.38 ng/ml, 81.92 pg/ml, 443.26 pg/ml, respectively) were used, the prognoses of high and low groups were not different. Concluding, patients with NSCLC have a higher serum concentration of HMGB1 and VEGF, while survivin levels are comparable to healthy individuals. In our opinion, determination of HMGB1, survivin and VEGF concentrations has no clinical significance in the prognosis of the survival time in lung cancer.

Abstract
Background Survivin is one of the inhibitors of the apoptosis gene family that has been implicated in both inhibition of apoptosis and mitosis regulation. p53 is one of the tumor suppressor genes; prevents tumor formation through cell cycle blocking and eliminates damaged cells via activation of apoptosis. Objective To investigate the possible regulation of survivin by p53, we examined the expression of both proteins in 67 patients with diagnosed lung cancer using immunohistochemical visualization. Results Survivin was predominantly expressed in both nucleus and cytoplasm, whereas p53 was expressed in the nucleus. There was a negative correlation between survivin and p53 expression. A decreased intensity of expression and fewer cells positive for survivin in small cell lung cancer in comparison with other lung cancer types were detected. There was no significant difference in the intensity of expression and the number of cells positive for p53 between small cell and non-small cell lung cancer types. Conclusion The present study suggests that survivin expression, as opposed to that of p53, is decreased in small cell lung cancer, which may differentiate this cancer from other lung cancer types other types.

Abstract
BACKGROUND p53AIP1 is a potential mediator of apoptosis depending on p53, which is mutated in many kinds of carcinoma. High survivin expression in non-small cell lung cancer is related with poor prognosis. To investigate the role of these genes in non-small cell lung cancer, we compared the relationship between p53AIP1 or survivin gene expression and the clinicopathological status of lung cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-seven samples from non-small cell lung cancer patients were obtained between 1997 and 2003. For quantitative evaluation of RNA expression by PCR, we used Taqman PCR methods. RESULTS Although no correlation between p53AIP1 or survivin gene expression and clinicopathological factors was found, the relationship between survivin gene expression and nodal status was significant (p = 0.03). Overall survival in the p53AIP1-negative group was significantly worse than in the positive group (p = 0.04); however, although survivin expression was not a prognostic factor, the combination of p53AIP1 and survivin was a significant prognostic predictor (p = 0.04). In the multivariate cox proportional hazard model, the combination was an independent predictor of overall survival (p53AIP1 (+) survivin (+), HR 0.21, 95%CI = [0.01-1.66]; p53AIP1 (+) survivin (-), HR 0.01, 95%CI = [0.002-0.28]; p53AIP1 (-) survivin (-), HR 0.01, 95%CI = [0.002-3.1], against p53AIP1 (-) survivin (+), p = 0.03). CONCLUSION These data suggest that the combination of p53AIP1 and survivin gene expression may be a powerful tool to stratify subgroups with better or worse prognosis from the variable non-small cell lung cancer population.

Abstract
We previously demonstrated that the detection of circulating cancer cells (CCC) expressing survivin mRNA could provide valuable information for predicting metastasis and recurrence in breast cancer. The objective of this study was to investigate the significance of detecting survivin-expressing CCC on the clinical outcomes of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Peripheral blood samples collected from 143 NSCLC patients and 177 healthy volunteers were quantitatively evaluated using a technique developed in our laboratory that detected reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) products based on a hybridisation-enzyme linked immunosorbant essay (ELISA), which we called RT-PCR ELISA. The presence of survivin-expressing CCC was detected in 63 cancer patients (44.1%) and was significantly associated with pathological T classification, nodal status, and disease stages (all P<0.001). During a follow-up period of 36 months, patients who had positive survivin expressions at the time of the initial assay test had a higher relapse rate and shorter survival time when compared to those who had negative survivin expressions (all P<0.001). Through multivariate analysis, the detection of survivin-expressing CCC was found to be an independent predictor for cancer recurrence (HR=43.5; 95% CI=2.67-70.9; P=0.008) and survival (HR=1.35; 95% CI=1.02-4.31; P=0.049). Thus, detection of survivin-expressing CCC could be used in the prediction of disease recurrence as well as in the prognosis of NSCLC.
