Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to prepare pectin hydrogels with immobilized Lemna minor callus cells and to identify the effect of cell immobilization on the textural, rheological, and swelling properties; loading; and releasing of grape seed extract (GSE) from the hydrogels. Hardness, adhesiveness, elasticity, the strength of linkage, and complex viscosity decreased with increasing cell content in the hydrogels based on pectin with a degree of methyl esterification (DM) of 5.7% (TVC) and during incubation in gastrointestinal fluids. An increase in the rheological properties and fragility of pectin/callus hydrogels based on pectin with a DM of 33.0% (CP) was observed at a cell content of 0.4 g/mL. TVC-based pectin/callus beads increased their swelling in gastrointestinal fluids as cell content increased. TVC-based beads released GSE very slowly into simulated gastric and intestinal fluids, indicating controlled release. The GSE release rate in colonic fluid decreased with increasing cell content, which was associated with the accumulation of GSE in cells. CP-based beads released GSE completely in the intestinal fluid due to weak textural characteristics and rapid degradation within 10 min. Pectin/callus hydrogels have the ability to preserve GSE for a long time and may have great potential for the development of proanthocyanidin delivery systems due to their novel beneficial physicochemical and textural properties.

Abstract
Proanthocyanidins are important compounds known for their antioxidant and radical scavenging properties, but they are highly sensitive to light, heat, oxygen, and pH. In our study, proanthocyanidin was encapsulated using sodium alginate and carboxymethyl cellulose to enhance controlled release, pH stability, metal ion tolerance, temperature resistance, time release, the microencapsulation of food additives stability, antioxidant capacity analysis, and the storage period tolerance of proanthocyanidin. Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) analysis and full-wavelength UV scanning indicated the successful immobilization of proanthocyanidins into the polymeric microcapsules. The flowability and mechanical properties of the microcapsules were enhanced. Moreover, proanthocyanidin microcapsules exhibited higher thermal, pH, metal ion, time, and microencapsulation food additive stability. In addition, due to their high antioxidant properties, the proanthocyanidin microcapsules retained a greater amount of proanthocyanidin content during the gastric phase, and the proanthocyanidin was subsequently released in the intestinal phase for absorption. Thus, the study provided a systematic understanding of the antioxidant capabilities and stability of proanthocyanidin microcapsules, which is beneficial for developing preservation methods for food additives.

Abstract
The development of new delivery systems for polyphenols is necessary to maintain their antioxidant activity and targeted delivery. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain alginate hydrogels with immobilized callus cells, in order to study the interaction between the physicochemical properties of hydrogels, texture, swelling behaviour, and grape seed extract (GSE) release in vitro. The inclusion of duckweed (LMC) and campion (SVC) callus cells in hydrogels led to a decrease in their porosity, gel strength, adhesiveness, and thermal stability, and an increase in the encapsulation efficiency compared with alginate hydrogel. The incorporation of LMC cells (0.17 g/mL), which were smaller, resulted in the formation of a stronger gel. The Fourier transform infrared analyses indicated the entrapment of GSE in the alginate hydrogel. Alginate/callus hydrogels had reduced swelling and GSE release in the simulated intestinal (SIF) and colonic (SCF) fluids due to their less porous structure and the retention of GSE in cells. Alginate/callus hydrogels gradually released GSE in SIF and SCF. The faster GSE release in SIF and SCF was associated with reduced gel strength and increased swelling of the hydrogels. LMC-1.0Alginate hydrogels with lower swelling, higher initial gel strength, and thermal stability released GSE more slowly in SIF and SCF. The GSE release was dependent on the content of SVC cells in 1.0% alginate hydrogels. The data obtained show that the addition of callus cells to the hydrogel provides them with physicochemical and textural properties that are useful for the development of drug delivery systems in the colon.

Abstract
Proanthocyanidins have significant biological activity and pharmacological effects and are widely used in food, medicine, and cosmetics. Chitosan nanoparticles loaded with proanthocyanidins have been proven to improve their biological activity. Given some deficiencies of chitosan (CS), the modification of chitosan by folic acid (FA) can obtain new variants with different functions. For this objective, the folic acid conjugated chitosan was designed, and in vitro properties of proanthocyanidins loaded nanoparticles were studied systemically. Firstly, folic acid-chitosan conjugate (FA-CS) was synthesized and characterized. Folate-coupled chitosan-loaded proanthocyanidin nanoparticles (PC-CS/FA-NPs) were prepared by ionic gelation technique using FA-CS as a carrier. The successful nanoparticle synthesis was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The synthesized nanoparticles exhibited a spherical shape and smooth and uniform distribution features with a size range of less than 300 nm, as observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Meanwhile, PC-CS/FA-NPs had good thermal and gastrointestinal digestive stability and had a protective effect on AAPH-induced erythrocyte oxidative hemolysis. In conclusion, folic acid decorated chitosan nanoparticles improved the stability and bioavailability of proanthocyanidins in gastrointestinal digestion.

Abstract
Pectin-Zn-alginate gel particles from callus culture pectin with increased linearity and decreased rhamnogalacturonan I branching and degree of methylesterification had a higher gel strength and encapsulation capacity. An increase of the alginate concentration led to an increase in the particle gel strength. The grape seed extract (GSE) loaded and empty particles swelled slightly in the simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and gradually in the intestinal (SIF) fluid. The swelling degrees of the GSE-loaded and empty particles in the simulated colonic fluids (SCF) were decreased in the range SCF-7.0 (pH 7.0 + pectinase) > SCF-5.3 (pH 5.3 + pectinase) > SCF-2.3 (pH 2.3 + pectinase). The FTIR spectra indicated that GSE was embedded in the composite particles. Negligible leakage of GSE in SGF was shown. The increase in GSE release in SIF was due to the decrease in particle gel strength and increased swelling degree. The GSE release in fluids simulating the colon inflammation (SCF-2.3 and SCF-5.3) was similar, and it was lower than that in the SCF-7.0 simulating a healthy colon due to the increased gel strength. The percentage release of GSE increased slightly after exposure to different pH. Pectin-Zn-alginate hydrogel systems may be promising candidates for colon-targeted GSE delivery systems.

Abstract
As a major class of dietary polyphenols, tannins are demonstrated to have various health-promoting properties. Although tannins have been widely utilized in food, pharmaceutical and many other industries, the applications of tannins are quite limited due to their poor stability, sensory attributes and bioavailability. Encapsulation helps improve all of these properties. Complex coacervation, one of the most effective encapsulation techniques, is known for its simplicity, low cost, scalability and reproducibility in encapsulation of functional components. In recent years, complex coacervation has been successfully used for encapsulation of tannins and tannin-rich plant extracts. In this article, the research progress in encapsulating tannins and tannin-rich plant extracts by complex coacervation to improve their physicochemical properties and biological activities is critically reviewed for the first time. Encapsulation of tannins and tannin-rich plant extracts can effectively improve their sensory characteristics, stabilities, bioavailability, anti-hypercholesterolemia, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anticancer and antimicrobial activities. In particular, the enhancement of biological activities of tannins and tannin-rich plant extracts is usually correlated to their improved physicochemical properties imparted by the encapsulation technique. Moreover, we introduce the issues that need to be further resolved in future studies on encapsulation of tannins and tannin-rich plant extracts by complex coacervation.

Abstract
Procyanidins, as a kind of dietary flavonoid, have excellent pharmacological properties, such as antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties, and so they can be used to treat various diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, tumors, and obesity. Given the low bioavailability of procyanidins, great efforts have been made in drug delivery systems to address their limited use. Nowadays, the heavy burden of oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontitis, endodontic infections, etc., and their consequences on the patients’ quality of life indicate a strong need for developing effective therapies. Recent years, plenty of efforts are being made to develop more effective treatments. Therefore, this review summarized the latest researches on versatile effects and enhanced bioavailability of procyanidins resulting from innovative drug delivery systems, particularly focused on its potential against oral diseases.

Abstract
In this study, proanthocyanidin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (PC-CS-NPs) were produced using ionotropic gelation and characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The synthesized nanoparticles were smaller than 300 nm and had a spherical shape, smooth topography and homogenous morphology as observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In vitro release study showed that proanthocyanidins (PC) had a sustainable release from PC-CS-NPs in different buffer media. PC-CS-NPs had higher or comparable potency in scavenging DPPH and ABTS free radicals as compared to native drugs. Furthermore, PC-CS-NPs also inhibited the growth of four bacteria species, whose degree of inhibition depended on the bacterial strain. The results of SEM confirmed the changes in the microstructure of bacteria. Our findings support the use of chitosan nanoparticles to encapsulate PC and improve its bioactivity in food products.

Abstract
Practical application of proanthocyanidins (PAs) as antioxidants is limited because of their hard-to-maintained activities during the processes and storage and in severe gastrointestinal environments. To overcome this challenge, we have developed an easy and green method to encapsulate PAs based on casein-maltodextrin Maillard conjugates. The current work entails the systematic study on the antioxidative potentials of fabricated casein-maltodextrin-PAs nanoparticles (CMPNs). In vitro antioxidant activities of CMPNs remained well during storage in 28 days and treatments under 40-80 °C. In vivo Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) model further showed that the CMPNs could prolong the lifespan of nematodes and protected nematodes from oxidative stress and heat shock. Analyses of intracellular superoxide dismutase and catalase activities also confirmed the existence of an antioxidant protective effect. Besides, in vitro release test showed that the encapsulation enhanced the bioaccessibility of PAs. These results have important implications for the development of novel antioxidants in nutraceutical industries.

The phenolic compounds contained in grape are endowed with well-recognized anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-aging activities. Considering that natural anti-oxidants, such as proanthocyanidins, have poor water solubility and oral bioavailability, we have developed a drug delivery system based on solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN), apt to encapsulate grape seed extract (GSE), containing proanthocyanidins. Methods Plain, 6-coumarin (6-Coum), DiR- and GSE-loaded SLN were produced with the melt-emulsion method. Physicochemical characterization of all prepared SLN was determined by photon correlation spectroscopy and laser Doppler anemometry. MTT assay (spectrophotometry) and propidium iodide (PI) assay (cytofluorimetry) were used to assess cell viability. Flow cytometry coupled with cell imaging was performed for assessing apoptosis and necrosis by Annexin V/7-AAD staining (plain SLE), cell internalization (6-Coum-SLN) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production (SLN-GSE). NF-κB nuclear translocation was studied by immunofluorescence. In vivo bio-imaging was used to assess lung deposition and persistence of aerosolized DiR-loaded SLN. Results Plain SLN were not cytotoxic when incubated with H441 airway epithelial cells, as judged by both PI and MTT assays as well as by apoptosis/necrosis evaluation. 6-Coum-loaded SLN were taken up by H441 cells in a dose-dependent fashion and persisted into cells at detectable levels up to 16 days. SLN were detected in mice lungs up to 6 days. SLN-GSE possessed 243 nm as mean diameter, were negatively charged, and stable in size at 37 °C in Simulated Lung Fluid up to 48 h and at 4 °C in double distilled water up to 2 months. The content of SLN in proanthocyanidins remained unvaried up to 2 months. GSE-loaded SLN determined a significant reduction in ROS production when added 24–72 h before the stimulation with hydrogen peroxide. Interestingly, while at 24 h free GSE determined a higher decrease of ROS production than SLN-GSE, the contrary was seen at 48 and 72 h. Similar results were observed for NF-κB nuclear translocation. Conclusions SLN are a biocompatible drug delivery system for natural anti-oxidants obtained from grape seed in a model of oxidative stress in airway epithelial cells. They feature stability and long-term persistence inside cells where they release proanthocyanidins. These results could pave the way to novel anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory therapies for chronic respiratory diseases. Abstract
The graphene aerogels' potential for use as both a hemostatic agent and dermal delivery system has scarcely been investigated. In this study, we used a sol-gel process for generating dry and stable composite aerogels based on graphene oxide (GO) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Furthermore, we incorporated natural extract of País grape seed (SD) and skin (SK), rich in proanthocyanidins (PAs or condensed tannins). The effect of the incorporation of the grape extracts was investigated in relation to the aerogels' structure, coagulation performance and the release of the extracts. The results demonstrated that they have a porous structure and low density, capable of absorbing water and blood. The incorporation of 12% (w/w) of PA extracts into the aerogel increased the negative zeta potential of the material by 33% (-18.3 ± 1.3 mV), and the coagulation time was reduced by 37% and 28% during the first 30 and 60 s of contact between the aerogel and whole blood, respectively. The release of extracts from the GO-PVA-SD and GO-PVA-SK aerogels was prolonged to 3 h with 20%, probably due to the existence of strong binding between PAs andGO-PVA, both characterized by the presence of aromatic and hydroxyl groups that can form noncovalent bonds but are strong and stable enough to avoid a greater release into the medium. This study provides a new GO-based aerogel, which has a great potential use in the field of dermal delivery, wound healing and/or the treatment of trauma bleeding.
