Background

Glomus tumors, also known as benign acral tumors are extremely rare. Previous glomus tumors from other regions of the body have been linked to neurological compression symptoms, however axillary compression at the scapular neck has never been described.

Case presentation

Here, we report a case of axillary nerve compression in a 47-year-old man, secondary to a glomus tumor of the neck of the right scapula, initially misdiagnosed with biceps tenodesis performed and no pain improvement. The magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a well-contoured, 12 mm tumefaction at the inferior pole of the scapular neck T2-hyperintense and T1-isointense and interpreted as a neuroma. An axillary approach allowed the dissection of the axillary nerve, and the tumor was completely removed. The pathological anatomical analysis resulted in a nodular red lesion measuring 14 × 10 mm, delimited and encapsulated with a definitive diagnostic of glomus tumor. The neurologic symptoms and pain disappeared 3 weeks after surgery and the patient reported satisfaction with the surgical procedure. After 3 months, the results remain stable with a complete resolution of the symptoms.

Conclusions

In cases of unexplained and atypical pain in the axillary area, and to avoid potential misdiagnoses and inappropriate treatments, an in-depth exploration for a compressive tumor should be performed as a differential diagnosis.

Glomus Tumor: "A-Not-So-Rare" Cause of Chronic Shoulder Pain-A Case Report and Literature Review

Case

A 61-year-old male presented with chronic shoulder pain resistant to conservative treatment. Imaging identified a nodular lesion in the deltoid muscle, which histology after resection identified as a glomus tumor. After surgery, the patient became asymptomatic and at 4-year follow-up has not shown signs of recurrence.

Conclusion

Glomus tumors around the shoulder should be considered when investigating chronic shoulder pain, as they are more common than thought. Despite being elusive, when diagnosed, excellent outcomes may be expected, with surgery resection being curative.

Bronchial glomus tumor with calcification: A case report

BACKGROUND

Glomus tumors (GTs), defined by modified smooth cells and normal glomus body cells, usually present with a small mass occurring in the soft tissue or dermis of an extremity, especially in the subungual region. However, other unusual sites, such as the respiratory tract, have also been reported. They are usually sporadic. Their imaging findings are usually nonspecific and likely to appear as a well-delineated round mass that usually lacks calcification. To our knowledge, we report the first case of bronchial GTs with calcification, reminding clinicians and radiologists that GT is one of the differential diagnoses when a calcified nodular mass is found.

CASE SUMMARY

We report a case of a 33-yr-old Chinese man with cough and sputum for 11 d and hemoptysis for 5 d. Chest computed tomography revealed a calcified nodular lesion on the compressed posterior wall of the lower left main bronchus and bronchiectasis in the lower lobe of the left lung. To confirm the characteristics of calcified nodules, we performed fiberoptic bronchoscopy. The tumor tissue from the biopsy of bronchial mucosal lesions established the diagnosis of GT. Because the patient had no life-threatening symptoms, he was not treated with surgery. Clinical follow-up for 25 mo showed that the patient survived well without any discomfort.

CONCLUSION

Bronchial GTs are usually not accompanied by calcification on computed tomography scans. To our knowledge, we report the first calcified bronchial GT. We recommend that clinicians consider GT as a possible differential diagnosis when a calcified mass of the bronchi is found.

Chronic Long Standing Shoulder Pain, Caused by Glomus Tumor

Chronic shoulder pain can be caused by muscle, bone and joint inflammatory and tumoral lesions; however, chronic shoulder pain secondary to benign vascular tumor called glomus tumor is an extremely rare occurrence. To the best of our knowledge less than 15 cases of chronic shoulder pain have been reported secondary to glomus tumor. Herein we report our experience with a young lady who presented with chronic shoulder pain which turned out to be caused by a soft tissue glomus tumor. This case has also been unique because if its large size (about 5 cm in greatest diameter).

A rare case of a calcified glomus tumour in the thigh of an adolescent

Glomus tumours are clinically defined by a triad of symptoms, i.e. paroxysmal pain, pinpoint tenderness and hypersensitivity to cold. These tumours typically affect the upper limbs, are small in size, superficially located and mostly found in adults. During a radiologic assessment of an idiopathic scoliosis in a 13-year-old girl, we found a calcified mass lesion in the soft tissue of the proximal thigh. The child was asymptomatic. Complementary exams permitted the definition of an interfascial calcified tumour with a long axis of 50 mm, with an inferior polar soft-tissue component. After excision, the anatomical pathology analysis confirmed the diagnosis of calcified glomus tumour. This clinical and radiologic presentation is particularly uncommon for a glomus tumour, which enriches the range of differential diagnoses of calcified masses in soft tissue.

Glomus tumor of the shoulder: A case report and review of the literature

Glomus tumors are benign neoplasms that arise from neuromyoarterial glomus bodies, with clinical manifestations that include acute pain, cold intolerance and tenderness. Glomus tumors may occur anywhere in the skin, soft tissue or gastrointestinal tract, but are most frequently encountered in the nail bed of the hands. The present study reports the case of a 30-year-old female with a history of shoulder pain caused by a cystic neoformation. Following surgery, a microscopic examination revealed nests of small cells of a rounded and regular shape. The tumor cells exhibited positive expression for CD34 and smooth muscle actin. This study supports and confirms the fact that a glomus tumor is a benign neoplasm that may occur in multiple locations. Therefore, the significance of a histological and immunohistochemical approach for a correct characterization of this lesion is required.
