Comprehensive review of phthalate exposure: Health implications, biomarker detection and regulatory standards

Phthalates are a wide family of chemicals that are used in many different industrial applications used in many different industrial applications, including the production of plastics, toys, food packaging particularly for kids, and medical equipment. Due to their various chemical and physical properties, phthalates may negatively impact humans, animals, and the environment. Thus the potential for phthalate exposure and harm to humans, animals, and the environment is high because its presence is alarming. Phthalates can be ingested, inhaled, absorbed topically, or via iatrogenic exposure in animals and humans. This article aimed to ascertain the modes of exposure, fate and detection techniques, and harmful effects of phthalates on humans, animals, and the environment. This review also shows that the intake of phthalate above the established daily limit from sources such as food, toys, and air causes serious harm, including impaired immune function, difficulties in pregnancy, loss of reproduction, and damage to the kidneys, lungs, heart, and brain in humans. Children and pregnant women are the most impacted groups and phthalates also negatively affect the environment and wildlife. A few methods to determine phthalate exposure, such as the LC and the HPLC-MS/MS methods, which employ human fluid or dust air as a biomarker, are also addressed here. Consequently, this comprehensive review aims to provide a detailed analysis of the existing evidence regarding explicit links between exposure to phthalates and subsequent health outcomes that may be directly related to this exposure. Additionally, we reviewed the developed and validated analytical methods and supplemented the literature with partial biomonitoring data on their metabolites.

Biochar mitigates the postponed bioavailability and toxicity of phthalic acid esters in the soil

Observed nowadays wide pollution of the environment with microplastic and phthalic acid esters (PAEs) (such as dimethyl phthalate, DMP; diethyl phthalate, DEP; dibutyl phthalate, DBP; benzyl butyl phthalate, BBP; di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, DEHP and di-n-octyl phthalate, DNOP) is a result of their increased production and usage. Weak bonding with polymer matrix enables their easier mobilization in the environment and increased bioavailability. The aim of the presented studies was the estimation of the fate of six priority PAEs in the soil-vegetable system and the application of biochar to immobilize PAEs in the soil preventing their bioavailability to lettuce. Both the acute (one full lettuce development period) and prolongated effect (lettuce cultivated after 10 weeks from the first PAEs contamination) were estimated to examine the long-time exposure under crop rotation. The addition of 1 % of corn-derived biochar immobilized PAEs in the soil efficiently (up to 4 times increased concentration) with the following order: DBP < DEP < DMP < DEHP < DNOP < BBP. Bioavailable PAEs were determined in lettuce roots (DMP, BBP, DEHP), and lettuce leaves (DEP, DBP, DNOP) but the presence of biochar lowered their content. PAEs, although not available for lettuce, were available for other organisms, confirming that the bioavailability or lack of nutrients is of great importance in PAEs-polluted soil. In long-time experiments, without biochar amendment, all PAEs were 3-12 times more bioavailable and were mainly accumulated in lettuce roots. The biochar addition significantly reduces (1.5-11 times) PAEs bioavailability over time. However, the PAEs content in roots remained significantly higher in samples with crop rotation compared to samples where only lettuce was grown. The results confirmed that biochar addition to the soil reduces their bioavailability and mobility inside the plant, limiting their transport from roots to leaves and reducing the exposure risk but confirming that lettuce leaves may be a safe food when cultivated in PAEs-polluted soil.

Implications of PM2.5 chemical composition in modulating microbial community dynamics during spring in Seoul

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) harbors a diverse microbial community. To assess the ecological dynamics and potential health risks associated with airborne microorganisms, it is crucial to understand the factors influencing microbial communities within PM2.5. This study investigated the influence of abiotic parameters, including air pollutants, PM2.5 chemical composition (water-soluble ions and organics), and meteorological variables, on microbial communities in PM2.5 samples collected in Seoul during the spring season. Results revealed a significant correlation between air pollutants and water-soluble ions of PM2.5 with microbial α-diversity indices. Additionally, air pollutants exerted a dominant effect on the microbial community structure, with stronger correlations observed for fungi than bacteria, whereas meteorological variables including temperature, pressure, wind speed, and humidity exerted a limited influence on fungal α-diversity. Furthermore, the results revealed specific water-soluble ions, such as SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+, as important factors influencing fungal α-diversity, whereas K+ negatively correlated with both microbial α-diversity. Moreover, PM2.5 microbial diversity was affected by organic compounds within PM2.5, with fatty acids exhibited a positive correlation with fungal diversity, while dicarboxylic acids exhibited a negative correlation with it. Furthermore, network analysis revealed direct links between air pollutants and dominant bacterial and fungal genera. The air pollutants exhibited a strong correlation with bacterial genera, such as Arthrospira and Clostridium, and fungal genera, including Aureobasidium and Cladosporium. These results will contribute to our understanding of the ecological dynamics of airborne microorganisms and provide insights into the potential risks associated with PM2.5 exposure.
