Abstract
INTRODUCTION Limited literature concerning nocturia in early postmenopausal women is available. However, due to the lack of endogenous estrogen in these women, an increased prevalence of nocturia is expected. MATERIAL AND METHODS This prospective observational trial recruited 210 'early' postmenopausal women consulting the Ghent University menopause clinic. Postmenopausal status was biochemically confirmed. Women completed 3 questionnaires: the ICI questionnaire on nocturia (ICIQ-N); 'Targeting the individual's Aetiology of Nocturia to Guide Outcomes' (TANGO) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Moreover, information concerning women's age, anthropometrics and lifestyle was collected. Nocturia was defined as two or more nocturnal voids. RESULTS Nocturia was reported in 24.8% (52/210) of the postmenopausal women. Bother increased with every nocturnal void. Women with two or more nighttime voids were found to have significantly increased prevalence of urgency compared with women with only one (p < 0.001; 38.5% versus 22.7%). Trouble initiating sleep at the start of the night and insomnia during the night were significantly different in women with a different nocturnal frequency (initiating sleep p = 0.09, no voids 34.4 %, 1 void 39.2 %, ≥ 2 voids 53.8 %; insomnia p < 0.001; no voids 1.6%, 1 void 22.7 %, ≥ 2 voids 53.8 %). In addition to bladder and sleep dysfunctions, waist circumference was a risk factor for nocturia (OR 1.04; 95 % CI: 1.01-1.08). CONCLUSION Nocturia is an important problem in early postmenopausal women, affecting a quarter of the questioned women. Etiology of nocturia in this population is multifactorial as estrogen withdrawal is accompanied by bladder and sleep dysfunctions.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Nocturia in women is a notable health concern, associated with significant morbidity and decreases in health-related quality of life. It is implicated in daytime somnolence and poor sleep quality, and has been found to negatively impact household activities, work, exercise, and sexual activity. This review is intended to relay new information regarding the prevalence, cause, risk factors, ramifications, and treatment options for nocturia in women as it gains traction as a clinical entity in and of itself. RECENT FINDINGS New literature exposes the prevalence and burden of nocturia among young, healthy nulliparous women; reveals its presence in women without daytime symptoms; suggests its relationship with abnormal bowel function; and supports its association with obesity, cardiac burden and poor sleep. The link between nocturia and menopause has been challenged, and recent nomenclature describing the genitourinary symptoms of menopause excludes it from the list. Desmopressin and tamsulosin trials in women have demonstrated safety and efficacy in limiting nocturia frequency and severity, as well as in improving sleep parameters. SUMMARY Nocturia is an impactful health issue at risk of being missed, especially in younger female patients. Open dialogue, purposeful questioning, and screening surveys can help elicit this symptom in women who are embarrassed or who accredit it to normal aging and therefore do not seek medical attention. In light of a growing geriatric population, nocturia is a clinical entity of increasing importance as it can be a clue to underlying systemic disorder or it can be an isolated symptom with significant clinical implications if left unaddressed.

Abstract
[Purpose] To assess lower urinary tract symptoms in different stages of menopause and the quality of life of females with incontinence. [Subjects and Methods] The sample consisted of 302 females, aged between 40 and 56 years, divided into three groups: PRE (n= 81), PERI (n= 108) and POST (n= 113). This was a cross-sectional, analytical, observational study. Data were collected by assessment chart and conducting the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form. [Results] Most of the women had less than 10 years of schooling and were married. In PERI and POST menopause, the most frequent lower urinary tract symptoms were urinary urgency and stress incontinence. The PRE group did not exhibit nocturia, urge incontinence or urinary urgency, and had the lowest symptoms frequency. In the three stages, stress incontinence was the most prevalent symptom. Of the three menopause stages, PERI had a greater impact on urinary incontinence according to the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire. [Conclusion] The presence of lower urinary tract symptoms can vary across the different stages of menopause and the urinary incontinence was the most frequent complaint. Moreover, it was observed that quality of life was more affected in the perimenopause stage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in women increases significantly after menopause. However, identifying at-risk women is difficult because they tend to underreport symptoms and their complaints may differ from those traditionally associated with OSA. We investigated whether OSA risk factors are associated with the presence of a "nontraditional" complaint, such as nocturnal enuresis, in postmenopausal women. METHODS A cross-sectional study of postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 years who participated in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study and clinical trials (1993-2005) at 40 clinical centers in the United States was performed. Multiple variable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association of OSA risk factors with nocturnal enuresis. RESULTS A cohort of 2,789 women (1.7%) reported having nocturnal enuresis. Obesity (odds ratio [OR], 2.29; 95% CI, 2.00-2.62), snoring (OR, 2.01; 95% CI, 1.74-2.32), poor sleep quality (OR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.52-1.91), sleep fragmentation (OR, 2.44; 95% CI, 2.14-2.79), daytime sleepiness (OR, 1.50; 95% CI, 1.33-1.68), and hypertension (OR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.01-1.26) were associated with nocturnal enuresis. Each additional OSA risk factor in a predefined OSA score significantly increased the odds of having nocturnal enuresis in a dose-response fashion (OR of 1.38, 2.00, 2.80, 3.87, 5.10, and 7.02 for scores of 1-6, respectively) compared with no risk factors. CONCLUSIONS OSA risk factors are associated with nocturnal enuresis in postmenopausal women. Mechanisms relating nocturnal enuresis to OSA may include apnea-associated changes in intrathoracic pressure, leading to increased urine output. Questioning at-risk postmenopausal women presenting with nocturnal enuresis about other OSA risk factors should be considered.

Abstract
PURPOSE Bladder symptoms are common in women and result in use of healthcare resources and poor quality of life. Bladder symptoms have been linked to age and menopause, but debate exists in the literature. This article examines factors associated with bladder symptoms and compares women in late reproductive stage with those in menopausal transition. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed cross-sectional data from a prospective cohort study of midlife women (mean age, 48; range, 44-54 years) in northern California. The sample consisted of 158 women in late reproductive stage or menopause transition. Assessments included anthropometrics, menstrual cycle lengths and symptoms, urine samples for follicle-stimulating hormone level, and self-reported health perception and depressive symptoms. Analyses included descriptive bivariate statistics, group comparisons, and regression models. RESULTS The most common bladder symptoms were nocturia (72%) at least once per night and urinary incontinence (50%) at least once per week. Incontinence was less prevalent in African American women compared to European Americans and Latinas (p = 0.001) and more prevalent in late reproductive stage than in menopause transition (p = 0.024). Controlling for age, women in late reproductive stage were more likely to report nocturia compared to those in menopause transition. Reproductive stage (p = 0.016), higher body mass index (p = 0.007), and race (p = 0.017) contributed to the variance in weekly nighttime urinary frequency. CONCLUSION Bladder symptoms were associated with reproductive stage. Women in late reproductive stage were more likely to experience nocturia and incontinence than those in menopause transition. The higher rates of nocturia and incontinence in late reproductive stage are intriguing. Future studies should include analysis of pelvic organ prolapse degree and other structural differences.

Abstract
PURPOSE We determined the associations between nocturia and sleep disorders in perimenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 100 women with nocturia were compared to 200 without nocturia. Obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, anxiety and menopausal stage were assessed using validated questionnaires. Comorbidities associated with nocturia were determined by bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS Independent associations for nocturia were anxiety (OR 2.11, 95% CI 1.08-4.13), black American race (OR 2.00, 95% CI 1.06-3.85), obstructive sleep apnea symptoms (OR 1.73, 95% CI 1.18-2.53) and insomnia (OR 1.11, 95% CI 1.05-1.12). CONCLUSIONS Nocturia is associated with sleep disorders in perimenopausal women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the association of nocturia and urinary urgency with reproductive factors, including parity, the postpartum period, the menopause, hormone replacement therapy, hysterectomy, and surgery for stress urinary incontinence (SUI). STUDY DESIGN In 2003-2004, questionnaires eliciting urinary symptoms, reproductive factors, SUI surgery, and potential confounders were mailed to 3000 randomly selected women aged 18-79 years, identified from the Finnish Population Register. Nocturia was defined as 2 or more voids/night. Sudden compelling desire to urinate often or always (scale of never, rarely, often, always) was regarded as urgency. Pregnant and puerperal (6 weeks after delivery) women and those reporting urinary tract infection were excluded. RESULTS Responses totaled 2002 (67%). Parity, postpartum (defined as six weeks to one year after delivery) and postmenopausal periods were associated with increased nocturia and SUI surgery with increased urgency (adjusted for age, comorbidity, medication, anthropometric, sociodemographic and lifestyle factors). Hormone therapy and hysterectomy were associated with neither symptom. CONCLUSION Reproductive factors associated with nocturia differed from those related to urgency.
