DFT study on synergetic Ir/Cu-metallaphotoredox catalyzed trifluoromethylation of aryl bromides

Theoretical study on the concerted catalysis of Ir/Ni for amino radical transfer for C(sp2)-C(sp3) bond formation

Thomas C. Maier's group has reported a synergistic Ir/Ni catalysis method for the synthesis of C(sp2)-C(sp3) bonds through an amino radical transfer (ART) strategy to generate alkyl radicals. This work employed density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the reaction mechanism, including the redox mechanism of Ir complexes in the generation process of amino radicals, analyzed the role and rationale behind alkyl boronic esters becoming dominant reaction pathways in the ART process, and discussed the competitive reaction mechanisms between oxidative addition and radical capture during C(sp2)-C(sp3) cross-coupling with Ni complexes. Through this theoretical calculation study, we aim to provide a theoretical foundation for constructing key carbon radical intermediates using ART and Ni-complex catalyzed free-radical-involved C(sp2)-C(sp3) cross-coupling reactions.

Applications of Halogen-Atom Transfer (XAT) for the Generation of Carbon Radicals in Synthetic Photochemistry and Photocatalysis

The halogen-atom transfer (XAT) is one of the most important and applied processes for the generation of carbon radicals in synthetic chemistry. In this review, we summarize and highlight the most important aspects associated with XAT and the impact it has had on photochemistry and photocatalysis. The organization of the material starts with the analysis of the most important mechanistic aspects and then follows a subdivision based on the nature of the reagents used in the halogen abstraction. This review aims to provide a general overview of the fundamental concepts and main agents involved in XAT processes with the objective of offering a tool to understand and facilitate the development of new synthetic radical strategies.

1,2-Bis-perfluoroalkylations of alkenes and alkynes with perfluorocarboxylic anhydrides via the formation of perfluoroalkylcopper intermediates

A novel, Cu-mediated protocol toward the 1,2-bis-perfluoroalkyaltion of alkenes/alkynes was developed. The method proceeded with perfluorocarboxylic anhydrides as inexpensive and readily available perfluoroalkyl sources. Diacyl peroxide was generated in situ from the perfluorocarboxylic anhydrides and H₂O₂. The key step in this reaction is the formation of a stable perfluoroalkylcopper intermediate that is achieved with the aid of a bipyridyl ligand. Subsequent reaction of the intermediate with perfluoroalkyl-containing alkyl or vinyl radicals affords the desired products.
