Abstract
Abstract
The number of researches on the ion exchange membrane has increased considerably in recent years showing interest in fuel cell technology for the automobile and portable applications. The most promising fuel cell technology for low-temperature operation (80 °C < T < 150 °C) uses a polymer membrane separating the anode and cathode compartments in an electrochemical cell. Polyoxadiazoles (PODs) belong to a class of heterocyclic polymers, which possess a number of unique properties, such as thermal, mechanical, and chemical resistance. In the present review, numerous ways of POD synthesis are discussed in relation to their functional properties. In addition, different approaches to the elaboration of POD-based composite membranes are discussed in details in order to reveal the structure/properties relationship.

Abstract
The polymer-inorganic nanoparticles composite membranes are the latest solutions for multiple physicochemical resistance and selectivity requirements of membrane processes. This paper presents the production of polysulfone-silica microfiber grafted with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (PSf-SiO2-TiO2) composite membranes. Silica microfiber of length 150-200 μm and diameter 12-15 μm were grafted with titanium dioxide nanoparticles, which aggregated as microspheres of 1-3 μm, applying the sol-gel method. The SiO2 microfibers grafted with nano-TiO2 were used to prepare 12% polysulfone-based nanocomposite membranes in N-methyl pyrrolidone through the inversion phase method by evaporation. The obtained nanocomposite membranes, PSf-SiO2-TiO2, have flux characteristics, retention, mechanical characteristics, and chemical oxidation resistance superior to both the polysulfone integral polymer membranes and the PSf-SiO2 composite membranes. The antimicrobial tests highlighted the inhibitory effect of the PSf-SiO2-TiO2 composite membranes on five Gram (-) microorganisms and did not allow the proliferation of Candida albicans strain, proving that they are suitable for usage in the oral environment. The designed membrane met the required characteristics for application as a functional barrier in guided bone regeneration.

Abstract
A new diacylhydrazide monomer, namely, 4-(4-(4-(4-(hydrazinocarbonyl)phenoxy)-2-pentadecylphenoxy)phenoxy) benzohydrazide (HPPDPB), was synthesized starting from 4-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)-3-pentadecylphenol. HPPDPB was polycondensed with terephthalic acid chloride (TPC), isophthalic acid chloride (IPC) and a mixture of TPC and IPC (50:50 mol%) to obtain polyhydrazides containing multiple arylene ether linkages in the backbone and pendent pentadecyl chains. Polyhydrazides were subsequently cyclized in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride to obtain the corresponding poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole)s. Polyhydrazides and poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole)s exhibited inherent viscosities in the range 0.65–0.72 dL g−1 and 0.54–0.62 dL g−1, respectively, which indicated the formation of reasonably high-molecular weight polymers. Polyhydrazides were soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and pyridine whereas poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole)s exhibited excellent solubility even in common organic solvents such as chloroform, dichloromethane and tetrahydrofuran. Tough, transparent and flexible films of polyhydrazides and poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole)s could be cast from DMAc and chloroform solutions, respectively. X-Ray diffraction studies revealed amorphous nature of polyhydrazides and poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole)s and the formation of layered structure was observed due to ordered packing of pentadecyl chains. The 10% decomposition temperature ( T10) values for poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole)s were in the range 425–440°C indicating their good thermal stability. Glass transition temperature ( Tg) values of polyhydrazides and poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole)s were in the range 175–192°C and 92–103°C, respectively. The excellent solubility characteristics and the large gap between Tg (92–103°C) and T10 (425–440°C) values give poly(1,3,4-oxadiazole)-containing pendent pentadecyl chains better opportunities for processability.

Abstract
Hydroxyl functionalized polytriazole-co-polyoxadiazole (PTA-POD) copolymers have been synthesized and cast as promising highly thermally stable, chemically resistant, and antiorganic/biological fouling porous substrates for the fabrication of thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membranes. The roles of PTA/POD ratios in the membrane substrates, TFC layers, and FO membrane performance have been investigated. This study demonstrates that the substrate fabricated from the copolymer containing 40 mol % PTA is optimal for the TFC membranes. Compared to the POD-TFC membrane, the 40 mol % PTA-TFC membrane exhibits a remarkable decrease in structural parameter (S) of more than 3.3 times. In addition, the 40 mol % PTA-TFC membrane is characterized by high water fluxes of 24.9 LMH and 47.2 LMH using 1 M NaCl as the draw solution and DI water as the feed under FO and pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) modes, respectively. Compared to a polysulfone (PSU) supported TFC-FO membrane under similar fabrication conditions, the 40% mol PTA-TFC membrane shows better FO performance and enhanced antifouling properties on the support (lower protein binding propensity and improved bacterial inhibition). Moreover, the performance of the 40 mol % PTA supported TFC-FO membrane can be improved to 37.5 LMH (FO mode)/78.4 LMH (PRO mode) and potentially higher by optimizing the support morphology, the TFC formation, and the post-treatment process. Hence, the use of newly developed hydroxyl functionalized polytriazole-co-polyoxadiazole copolymers may open up a new class of material for FO processes.
