Abstract
Retinal degeneration (RD) is recognized as a frequent cause of visual impairments, including inherited (Retinitis pigmentosa) and degenerative (age-related macular) eye diseases. Dental stem cells (DSCs) have recently demonstrated a promising neuroprotection potential for ocular diseases through a paracrine manner carried out by extracellular vesicles (EVs). However, effective isolation of EVs is still challenging, and isolation methods determine the composition of enriched EVs and the subsequent biological and functional effects. In the present study, we assessed two enrichment methods (micro-electromechanical systems and ultrafiltration) to isolate the EVs from stem cells from apical papilla (SCAP). The size distribution of the corresponding isolates exhibited the capability of each method to enrich different subsets of EVs, which significantly impacts their biological and functional effects. We confirmed the neuroprotection and anti-inflammatory capacity of the SCAP-EVs in vitro. Further experiments revealed the possible therapeutic effects of subretinal injection of SCAP-EVs in the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rat model. We found that EVs enriched by the micro-electromechanical-based device (MEMS-EVs) preserved visual function, reduced retinal cell apoptosis, and prevented thinning of the outer nuclear layer (ONL). Interestingly, the effect of MEMS-EVs was extended to the retinal ganglion cell/retinal nerve fiber layer (GCL/RNFL). This study supports the use of the microfluidics approach to enrich valuable subsets of EVs, together with the choice of SCAP as a source to derive EVs for cell-free therapy of RD.

Abstract
In this paper, the transport phenomena in four common membrane distillation (MD) configurations and three popular modelling approaches are introduced. The mechanism of heat transfer on the feed side of all configurations are the same but are distinctive from each other from the membrane interface to the bulk permeate in each configuration. Based on the features of MD configurations, the mechanisms of mass and heat transfers for four configurations are reviewed together from the bulk feed to the membrane interface on the permeate but reviewed separately from the interface to the bulk permeate. Since the temperature polarisation coefficient cannot be used to quantify the driving force polarisation in Sweeping Gas MD and Vacuum MD, the rate of driving force polarisation is proposed in this paper. The three popular modelling approaches introduced are modelling by conventional methods, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and response surface methodology (RSM), which are based on classic transport mechanism, computer science and mathematical statistics, respectively. The default assumptions, area for applications, advantages and disadvantages of those modelling approaches are summarised. Assessment and comparison were also conducted based on the review. Since there are only a couple of full-scale plants operating worldwide, the modelling of operational cost of MD was only briefly reviewed. Gaps and future studies were also proposed based on the current research trends, such as the emergence of new membranes, which possess the characteristics of selectivity, anti-wetting, multilayer and incorporation of inorganic particles.

Abstract
Cake layer formation in membrane processes is an inevitable phenomenon. For hard particles, especially cake porosity and thickness determine the membrane flux, but when the particles forming the cake are soft, the variables one has to take into account in the prediction of cake behavior increase considerably. In this work we investigate the behavior of soft polyacrylamide microgels in microfluidic model membranes through optical microscopy for in situ observation both under regular flow and under enhanced gravity conditions. Particles larger than the pore are able to pass through deformation and deswelling. We find that membrane clogging time and cake formation is not dependent on the applied pressure but rather on particle and membrane pore properties. Furthermore, we found that particle deposits subjected to low pressures and low g forces deform in a totally reversible fashion. Particle deposits subjected to higher pressures only deform reversibly if they can re-swell due to capillary forces, otherwise irreversible compression is observed. For membrane processes this implies that when using deformable particles, the pore size is not a good indicator for membrane performance, and cake formation can have much more severe consequences compared to hard particles due to the sometimes-irreversible nature of soft particle compression.

Abstract
Models of reactive uptake of ozone in indoor environments generally describe materials through aerial (horizontal) projections of surface area, a potentially limiting assumption for porous materials. We investigated the effect of changing porosity/pore size, material thickness, and chamber fluid mechanic conditions on the reactive uptake of ozone to five materials: two cellulose filter papers, two cementitious materials, and an activated carbon cloth. Results include (1) material porosity and pore size distributions, (2) effective diffusion coefficients for ozone in materials, and (3) material-ozone deposition velocities and reaction probabilities. At small length scales (0.02-0.16 cm) increasing thickness caused increases in estimated reaction probabilities from 1 × 10(-6) to 5 × 10(-6) for one type of filter paper and from 1 × 10(-6) to 1 × 10(-5) for a second type of filter paper, an effect not observed for materials tested at larger thicknesses. For high porosity materials, increasing chamber transport-limited deposition velocities resulted in increases in reaction probabilities by factors of 1.4-2.0. The impact of physical properties and transport effects on values of the Thiele modulus, ranging across all materials from 0.03 to 13, is discussed in terms of the challenges in estimating reaction probabilities to porous materials in scenarios relevant to indoor environments.
