Binary gas mixture and hydrothermal stability investigation of cobalt silica membranes

Zirconia-Doped Methylated Silica Membranes via Sol-Gel Process: Microstructure and Hydrogen Permselectivity

In order to obtain a steam-stable hydrogen permselectivity membrane, with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as the silicon source, zirconium nitrate pentahydrate (Zr(NO₃)₄·5H₂O) as the zirconium source, and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) as the hydrophobic modifier, the methyl-modified ZrO₂-SiO₂ (ZrO₂-MSiO₂) membranes were prepared via the sol-gel method. The microstructure and gas permeance of the ZrO₂-MSiO₂ membranes were studied. The physical-chemical properties of the membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and N₂ adsorption–desorption analysis. The hydrogen permselectivity of ZrO₂-MSiO₂ membranes was evaluated with Zr content, temperature, pressure difference, drying control chemical additive (glycerol) content, and hydrothermal stability as the inferred factors. XRD and pore structure analysis revealed that, as n_Zr increased, the MSiO₂ peak gradually shifted to a higher 2θ value, and the intensity gradually decreased. The study found that the permeation mechanism of H₂ and other gases is mainly based on the activation–diffusion mechanism. The separation of H₂ is facilitated by an increase in temperature. The ZrO₂-MSiO₂ membrane with n_Zr = 0.15 has a better pore structure and a suitable ratio of micropores to mesopores, which improved the gas permselectivities. At 200 °C, the H₂ permeance of MSiO₂ and ZrO₂-MSiO₂ membranes was 3.66 × 10⁻⁶ and 6.46 × 10⁻⁶ mol·m⁻²·s⁻¹·Pa⁻¹, respectively. Compared with the MSiO₂ membrane, the H₂/CO₂ and H₂/N₂ permselectivities of the ZrO₂-MSiO₂ membrane were improved by 79.18% and 26.75%, respectively. The added amount of glycerol as the drying control chemical additive increased from 20% to 30%, the permeance of H₂ decreased by 11.55%, and the permselectivities of H₂/CO₂ and H₂/N₂ rose by 2.14% and 0.28%, respectively. The final results demonstrate that the ZrO₂-MSiO₂ membrane possesses excellent hydrothermal stability and regeneration capability.

Arming wood carbon with carbon-coated mesoporous nickel-silica nanolayer as monolithic composite catalyst for steam reforming of toluene

Steam reforming is an effective measure for biomass tar elimination as well as H₂-rich syngas (H₂ + CO) production. However, the granular or powdery Ni-based catalysts are prone to deactivation, which is caused by inappropriate mass transfer and clogging of catalyst bed. Herein, monolithic wood carbon (WC) with low-tortuosity microchannels is armed with a carbon-coated mesoporous nickel-silica nanocomposite (Ni-SiO₂@C) layer via an evaporation-induced self-assembly and calcination procedure for toluene (tar model compound) steam reforming. The quality of the Ni-SiO₂@C layer growing on the surface of WC microchannel is affected by the molar ratios of Si/Ni feed. A uniform thin-layer coverage is obtained on the Ni-15SiO₂@C/WC (Si/Ni = 15) catalyst, where highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles (average size of 6.6 nm) with appropriate metal-support interaction and remarkable mechanical strength are achieved. The mass transfer, coke resistance, and hydrothermal stability of the Ni-15SiO₂@C/WC catalyst were significantly improved by the multilevel structure assembled from the WC microchannels and the secondary ordered SiO₂ mesopores. A stable toluene conversion over 97% with an H₂ yield of 135 μmol/min was obtained at 600 °C on the Ni-15SiO₂@C/WC catalyst. This work opens a new window for facilely constructing high-performance wood carbon-based monolithic tar reforming catalyst.

Development of Hybrid and Templated Silica-P123 Membranes for Brackish Water Desalination

Water scarcity is still a pressing issue in many regions. The application of membrane technology through water desalination to convert brackish to potable water is a promising technology to solve this issue. This study compared the performance of templated TEOS-P123 and ES40-P123 hybrid membranes for brackish water desalination. The membranes were prepared by the sol–gel method by employing tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) for the carbon-templated silica (soft template) and ethyl silicate (ES40) for the hybrid organo-silica. Both sols were templated by adding 35 wt.% of pluronic triblock copolymer (P123) as the carbon source. The silica-templated sols were dip-coated onto alumina support (four layers) and were calcined by using the RTP (rapid thermal processing) method. The prepared membranes were tested using pervaporation set up at room temperature (~25 °C) using brackish water (0.3 and 1 wt.%) as the feed. It was found that the hybrid membrane exhibited the highest specific surface area (6.72 m²·g⁻¹), pore size (3.67 nm), and pore volume (0.45 cm³·g⁻¹). The hybrid ES40-P123 was twice thicker (2 μm) than TEOS-P123-templated membranes (1 μm). Lastly, the hybrid ES40-P123 displayed highest water flux of 6.2 kg·m⁻²·h⁻¹. Both membranes showed excellent robustness and salt rejections of >99%.
