Pre-deposited dynamic membrane filtration - A review

A dynamic membrane (DM) is a layer of particles deposited via permeation drag onto a conventional membrane, such that the deposited particles act as a secondary membrane that minimizes fouling of the primary membrane to lower transmembrane pressures (TMP) and enable higher permeate fluxes. Since the first DM was created in 1966 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, numerous studies have reported synthesis of DMs using various materials and explored their abilities to perform reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF). DMs are classified into two categories, namely, (i) self-formed, whereby the feed constituents form the DM; and (ii) pre-deposited, whereby the DM is formed by a layer of particles other than the feed prior to introduction of the feed. This paper endeavors to present a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art on the latter. Key materials used as DMs, their formation and various factors influencing it, regeneration of DMs and modifications to DM systems for performance enhancement are discussed. The role of DMs in preventing fouling in the primary membrane (PM) is explained. The applications of DMs in four major areas, namely, salt and organic solute rejection, treatment of industrial effluents, treatment of water and wastewater, and oily-wastewater treatment are reviewed. Furthermore, technical and economic advantages of DMs over conventional processes are considered, and challenges in current DM research are discussed. Finally, directions for future research are suggested.

Porous SiO2 coated AlxFeyZr1-x-yO2 solid superacid nanoparticles with negative charge for polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane: Cleaning and partial desalinating seawater

In this work, porous SiO₂ coated Al_xFe_yZr_1-x-yO₂ solid superacid nanoparticles with negative charge (CS-SAFZr) were synthesized via hydrolysis, sulfation and sulfonation, and characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, BET and so on. The results show that the size of CS-SAFZr nanoparticles prepared under the optimum preparation conditions is around 80 nm, thickness of the porous SiO₂ shell is about 20 nm, Hammett acidity is -16.197 and ion exchange capacity (IEC) is 0.98 mmol·g^-1. Correspondingly, ferrum (Fe) and aluminum (Al) elements are successfully doped into the ZrO₂ lattice and the doped nanoparticles present a specific surface area of 396.2 m² g^-1 with abundant hydroxyl and sulfonic acid groups on the surface. To investigate the properties of the nanoparticles as the filler, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used as a candidate to prepare CS-SAFZr/PVDF ultrafiltration (UF) composite membranes and the performance were characterized via cleaning and desalinating seawater. Results indicate that the CS-SAFZr nanoparticles strengthen their compatibility with the membrane via hydrogen bonds and improve performances of PVDF membrane. The suspended solid and conductivity decline ratio of permeate seawater was 1.8 mg L^-1 and 13.20% respectively, indicating that CS-SAFZr/PVDF membrane performs seawater cleaning and partial desalination. Therefore, CS-SAFZr nanoparticles can be a promising candidate to modify PVDF membrane for cleaning and desalinating seawater.

Self-assembled membrane manufactured by metal–organic framework (UiO-66) coated γ-Al2O3 for cleaning oily seawater

In order to effectively clean oily seawater with anionic polyacrylamide (APAM), UiO-66 coated γ-Al₂O₃ (UA) composites were firstly synthesized using γ-Al₂O₃ as a template to induce the growth of high hydrophilic UiO-66 on its surface to form a uniform UA self-assembled membrane. The UA composites and self-assembled membrane were characterized and analyzed. Also, the membrane performance was investigated. The results show that the hydrophilicity of particles is enhanced with the water contact angle decreasing from 39.8° (γ-Al₂O₃ particles) to 26.2° (UA composites) by introducing the UiO-66 coating. Moreover, the UA self-assembled membrane performs attractive water yield and separation performance. The oil concentration in the permeate treated by the first class of UA self-assembled membrane declines apparently from 91.22 to 18.90 mg L⁻¹, while the water yield is as high as 657.89 L m⁻² h⁻¹. The reclaimed separation experiments show that the membrane materials could be recycled by calcination at 200 °C and hydraulic cleaning, which gives the material potential application in cleaning oily seawater.

The self-assembled membrane manufactured by UA composites exhibits excellent separation performance and water yield in the treatment of oily seawater.
