Abstract
The development of low-cost membranes with high ion-selectivity is crucial for facilitating the practical application of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). In this study, sulfonated polybenzimidazole grafted with benzenesulfonic acid side chains was used as the polymer matrix, and fluorine-containing modified MOF-801 (FM) was incorporated to prepare a series of membranes for VRFB applications. The enhancement of proton conductivity and reduction of area resistance can be attributed to several factors: acid-base interactions, the microphase-separated structure of the grafted side chains, the intrinsic conductivity of MOF-801, and the extensive hydrogen-bonding network established through fluoride modification. Notably, the incorporation of fluorine or fluorine-containing groups into the hydrocarbon polymer matrix significantly improves its oxidative stability. The sPBIA5-FMX membrane, with a FM content of 3 wt%, demonstrated the most remarkable overall performance, achieving a proton conductivity of 33.5 mS cm-1 at 30 °C and 100 % relative humidity (RH). At the same time, it has outstanding oxidation stability and excellent ion selectivity (5.23 × 106 S min cm-3). In addition, the sPBIA5-FM3 membrane exhibited excellent cell performance, with energy efficiency (EE) from 84.80 % to 86.50 % at current densities of 40-120 mA cm-2. This study confirms the significant potential of fluoride-modified MOF-801 to enhance ion selectivity and provides an effective strategy for optimizing proton transport channels.

Abstract
The rapid upsurge of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has sparked profound interest in their potential as proton conductors for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, proton-conducting behaviors of hydrophobic MOFs remain poorly understood compared with their hydrophilic counterparts, largely due to the absence of a microscopic phase separation structure akin to that found in Nafion membranes. Herein, we demonstrate a strategy for regulating the structures and proton conductivities of MOFs by separately incorporating hydrophobic -C(CF3)2- group alongside hydrophilic -O- and -SO2- groups into organic ligands as linkers. Three analogous MOFs, {[Zr6(obba)4(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4(OH)3(H2O)3(HCOO)]·3.5DMF·3CH3COCH3}n (Zr-obba, H2obba = 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid)), {[Zr6(sdba)4(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4(OH)2(H2O)2(HCOO)2]·2(CH3)2NH2+·2HCOO-·7(CH3)2NH·6.5H2O}n (Zr-sdba, H2sdba = 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid), and {[Zr6(hfipbba)4(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4(OH)4(H2O)4]·7.5(CH3)2NH2+·7.5HCOO-·3.5(CH3)2NH}n (Zr-hfipbba, H2hfipbba = 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)bis(benzoic acid)), were prepared and characterized. Interestingly, we observed a trend in proton conductivity: Zr-obba > Zr-sdba > Zr-hfipbba, which can be attributed to the competitive effect of surface hydrophobicity-hydrophilicity and the availability of accessible protons. More importantly, we identified dielectric σ-relaxation in Zr-sdba and Zr-hfipbba, which is linked to the thermally activated migration of disordered guest ions within the MOFs, highlighting the significant relationship between proton conduction and dielectric relaxation. This finding contributes to a deeper understanding of the critical roles that hydrophobicity-hydrophilicity play in proton conduction and the dielectric σ-relaxation mechanism in crystalline MOFs.

Abstract
Proton-conducting materials have gained popularity owing to their extensive applications in biologic/chemical sensors, supercapacitors, proton sieving, and proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells. To date, the most commercially used polymer membrane has been the Nafion series that exhibits conductivity exceeding 0.1 S cm-1, however, this series is expensive, has poor dimensional stability, and requires a complex synthesis process. The key criterion for selecting Nafion alternatives is to achieve the systematic integration of high proton conductivity with high stability through a simple and efficient approach. In this study, we used an aliovalent metal substitution strategy to design serial metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), including tetragonal T-Cd-BTC (CH3NH2CH3)2[Cd(BTC)](H2O) and quasi-cubic quasi-C-In-BTC (C4H7N2)[In(BTC)] and Im@quasi-C-In-BTC (C3H5N2)2[In(BTC)] frameworks, with 2-methylimidazolium and imidazolium cations as templates, respectively. Because of the aliovalent substitution of In(III) for Cd(II), both the metal-oxygen bond strength and unit cell symmetry gradually increased, resulting in an increase in the thermal stability of quasi-C-In-BTC and Im@quasi-C-In-BTC at temperatures of up to 700 K. Compared with in situ loaded 2-methylimidazolium quasi-C-In-BTC, Im@quasi-C-In-BTC prepared by incorporating the imidazolium cation into the pores of activated quasi-C-In-BTC exhibited a higher proton conductivity of 7.1 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 338 K and 95 % relative humidity. Thus, Im@quasi-C-In-BTC demonstrated real-life application. This result was confirmed by integrating Im@quasi-C-In-BTC with a poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-poly(vinylidene fluoride) polymer matrix. Density functional theory simulations indicated that Im@quasi-C-In-BTC was strongly acidic and had high water-adsorption capacities, which contributed to extensive hydrogen-bond networks and strong host-guest interactions, in accordance with the experimental finding.

Abstract
The acidic amphiphilic compound H[Co(H2L1)(HL1)(phen)]·3H2O (H4(Co-L1), H3L1 = 5-(3', 5'-dicarboxylphenyl)-pyridine-2-carboxylic, phen = phenanthroline) and the hydrophilic compound [Ni(HL2)(H2O)5]·H2O (H(Ni-L2), H3L2 = 5-(3',5'-dicarboxylphenyl)-pyridine-3-carboxylic) were synthesized via hydrothermal reactions at acidic conditions. The acidity of H4(Co-L1) is stronger than of H(Ni-L2); while the hydrogen bond continuity in H4(Co-L1) extended monodirectionally, which is smaller compared to the three-directional extension observed in H(Ni-L2). The proton conduction behaviors of these two compounds as fillers of Nafion composite membranes have been investigated. The results indicate that the optimal doping amounts of H4(Co-L1) and H(Ni-L2) are 2 and 1%, respectively; the proton conductivities of H4(Co-L1)/Nafion-2 and H(Ni-L2)/Nafion-1 composite membranes are 0.243 and 0.212 S·cm-1, respectively, which are approximately 50.2 and 30.6% higher than that of pure Nafion membrane, respectively. A higher doping amount of H4(Co-L1) can be attributed to its hydrophobic phen ligand, which promotes compatibility with Nafion membrane and reduces aggregation. Hydrogen bond continuity has a more significant effect on proton conductivity than acidity at relatively low doping amounts; conversely, this relationship reverses at relatively high doping amounts.

Abstract
In the field of proton conduction, the acquisition of crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high stability and ultrahigh proton conductivity has been of great research value and is worth continuous exploration. Here, we greenly synthesized a three-dimensional porous MOF (MOF-801-Ce) by using [(NH4)2Ce(NO3)6 and fumaric acid as starting materials and solvothermally synthesized Hf-UiO-66-NO2 by using HfCl4 and 2-nitroterephthalic acid as starting materials. A series of measurements have shown that both MOFs exhibit good water stability, acid-base stability, and thermal stability and demonstrate outstanding proton conductivity. At 100 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH), the proton conductivities (σ) could be 2.59 × 10-3 S·cm-1 for MOF-801-Ce and 0.89 × 10-3 S·cm-1 for Hf-UiO-66-NO2. To pursue higher proton conductivity, we further adopted the evaporation approach to encapsulate imidazole molecules in the pores of the two compounds, achieving the imidazole-encapsulated MOFs, Im@MOF-801-Ce and Im@Hf-UiO-66-NO2. As expected, their σ values were significantly boosted by almost an order of magnitude up to 10-2 S·cm-1. Finally, their proton-conductive mechanisms were explored in light of the structural information, gas adsorption/desorption, and other tests. The outstanding structural stability of these MOFs and their durability of the proton conduction capability manifested that they have great promise in electrochemical fields.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising competitive candidates as fillers for Nafion proton exchange membrane (PEM). Increasing efforts have been made to explore methods for synthesizing MOF fillers and the mechanism by which MOF doping improves the proton conductivity (σH+) values of composite membranes. In this study, a Pb(II) cation with strong polarizing force was selected for the hydrothermal reaction with a simple sulfoterephthalate ligand (H3L). Pb-MOF [Pb2L(OH)]n was obtained, which was constructed using Pb-O layers and deprotonated sulfoterephthalate L3- and exhibited good thermal and water stability. Different amounts of Pb-MOF particles were doped into Nafion to fabricate Pb-MOF/Nafion-x composite membranes, which were characterized using SEM, PXRD, IR spectroscopy, TGA, and other methods. It was found that doping Pb-MOF can apparently improve the water absorbability and thermal stability of the composite membrane. The σH+ of the Pb-MOF/Nafion-7 composite membrane was the highest and 2.14 times that of the pure Nafion membrane at 353 K. The higher proton conduction properties may be explained by the strong polarization force, and Pb(II) cations on the surface of Pb-MOF can decrease the bond energy of the O-H bond of absorbed water molecules and increase the acidity of the composite membrane. The phenomena in this study and our previous study confirm that acidity is the most important factor in favor of proton conductivity.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks constructed from Zr usually possess excellent chemical and physical stability. Therefore, they have become attractive platforms in various fields. In this work, two families of hybrid materials based on ZrSQU have been designed and synthesized, named Im@ZrSQU and Cu@ZrSQU, respectively. Im@ZrSQU was prepared through the impregnation method and employed for proton conduction. Im@ZrSQU exhibited terrific proton conduction performance in an anhydrous environment, with the highest proton conduction value of 3.6 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 110 °C. In addition, Cu@ZrSQU was synthesized via the photoinduction method for the photoreduction of CO2, which successfully promoted the conversion of CO2 into CO and achieved the CO generation rate of up to 12.4 μmol g-1 h-1. The photocatalytic performance of Cu@ZrSQU is derived from the synergistic effect of Cu NPs and ZrSQU. Based on an in-depth study and discussion toward ZrSQU, we provide a versatile platform with applications in the field of proton conduction and photocatalysis, which will guide researchers in their further studies.

Abstract
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) have received a lot of interest and use metal-organic frameworks (MOF)/polymer nanocomposite membranes. Zeolite imidazole framework-90 (ZIF-90) was employed as an addition in the sulfonated poly (1, 4-phenylene ether-ether-sulfone) (SPEES) matrix in order to investigate the proton conductivity in a novel nanocomposite membrane made of SPEES/ ZIF. The high porosity, free surface, and presence of the aldehyde group in the ZIF-90 nanostructure have a substantial impact on enhancing the mechanical, chemical, thermal, and proton conductivity capabilities of the SPEES/ZIF-90 nanocomposite membranes. The results indicate that the utilization of SPEES/ZIF-90 nanocomposite membranes with 3wt% ZIF-90 resulted in enhanced proton conductivity of up to 160 mS/cm at 90 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH). This is a significant improvement compared to the SPEES membrane which exhibited a proton conductivity of 55 mS/cm under the same conditions, indicating a 1.9-fold increase in performance. Furthermore, the SPEES/ZIF-90/3 membrane exhibited a remarkable 79% improvement in maximum power density, achieving a value of 0.52 W/cm2 at 0.5 V and 98% RH, which is 79% higher than that of the pristine SPEES membrane.

Abstract
Sulfonated polyaryl ether nitrile (SPEN) is some of the most viable novel materials to replace the Nafion membrane. To resolve the issue of proton conductivity in fuel cells with poor sulfonation degree polyaryl ether nitrile cell membranes. A metal-organic structure (MOF-801) was added as a filler, and imidazole was loaded by the MOF-801 structural skeleton via a chemical ligand to improve the SPEN’s proton conductivity. The expected chemical structure of im-MOF-801 and SPEN@Im-MOF-801 was confirmed by using FTIR and 1H NMR. Loading im-MOF-801 into SPEN resulted in SPEN@Im-MOF-801 composite proton exchange membranes. The impacts of the metal-organic framework on the performance of SPEN composite membranes were explored by assessing their mechanical characteristics, thermal stability, proton conductivity, and methanol permeability. The results show that the composite has outstanding thermal and mechanical stability. The tensile strength of membranes rose from 25.92 MPa to 39.34 MPa compared to the castings SPEN membrane, which was attributable to creating a hydrogen-bonding network between im-MOF-801 and SPEN, which boosted intermolecular forces. The carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in im-MOF-801 gave additional acceptors and donors that expanded the proton conductivity of SPEN, which was 16.19 ×10−2 S·cm−1 and expanded continuously, followed by a decrease with increasing temperature. Proton conductivity of SPEN@Im-MOF-801–3 and im-MOF-801–9 comes to 18.46 and 17.07 ×10−2 S·cm−1 at 80°C. Moreover, the methanol penetration of SPEN@Im-MOF-801 decreased reliably (from 5.32 to 1.02 ×10−7 S·cm−1 which was much lower than that of the Nafion film 21.87 ×10−7 S·cm−1). Subsequently, the most noteworthy selectivity of SPEN@Im-MOF-801–3 comes to 2.93×105 S·cm−3·s−1, which is approximately 8.9 times higher than that of Nafion (0.33×105 S·cm−3·s−1). The comes about demonstrates that these composites have potential applications in DMFCs.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are arguably a class of highly tuneable polymer-based materials with wide applicability. The arrangement of chemical components and the bonds they form through specific chemical bond associations are critical determining factors in their functionality. In particular, crystalline porous materials continue to inspire their development and advancement towards sustainable and renewable materials for clean energy conversion and storage. An important area of development is the application of MOFs in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and are attractive for efficient low-temperature energy conversion. The practical implementation of fuel cells, however, is faced by performance challenges. To address some of the technical issues, a more critical consideration of key problems is now driving a conceptualised approach to advance the application of PEMFCs. Central to this idea is the emerging field MOF-based systems, which are currently being adopted and proving to be a more efficient and durable means of creating electrodes and electrolytes for proton−exchange membrane fuel cells. This review proposes to discuss some of the key advancements in the modification of PEMs and electrodes, which primarily use functionally important MOFs. Further, we propose to correlate MOF-based PEMFC design and the deeper correlation with performance by comparing proton conductivities and catalytic activities for selected works.

Abstract
Hafnium (Hf)-based UiO-66 series metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely studied on gas storage, gas separation, reduction reaction, and other aspects since they were first prepared in 2012, but there are few studies on proton conductivity. In this work, one Hf-based MOF, Hf-UiO-66-fum showing UiO-66 structure, also known as MOF-801-Hf, was synthesized at room temperature using cheap fumaric acid as the bridging ligand, and then imidazole units were successfully introduced into MOF-801-Hf to obatin a doped product, Im@MOF-801-Hf. Note that both MOF-801-Hf and Im@MOF-801-Hf demonstrate excellent thermal, water, and acid-base stabilities. Expectedly, the maximum proton conductivity (σ) of Im@MOF-801-Hf (1.46 × 10-2 S·cm-1) is nearly 4 times greater than that of MOF-801-Hf (3.98 × 10-3 S·cm-1) under 100 °C and 98% relative humidity (RH). To explore their possible practical application value, we doped them into chitosan (CS) or Nafion membranes as fillers, namely, CS/MOF-801-Hf-X, CS/Im@MOF-801-Hf-Y, and Nafion/MOF-801-Hf-Z (X, Y, and Z are the doping percentages of MOF in the membrane, respectively). Intriguingly, it was found that CS/MOF-801-Hf-6 and CS/Im@MOF-801-Hf-4 indicated the highest σ values of 1.73 × 10-2 and 2.14 × 10-2 S·cm-1, respectively, under 100 °C and 98% RH and Nafion/MOF-801-Hf-9 also revealed a high σ value of 4.87 × 10-2 S·cm-1 under 80 °C and 98% RH, which showed varying degrees of enhancement compared to the original MOFs or pure CS and Nafion membranes. Our study illustrates that these Hf-based MOFs and related composite membranes offer great potential in electrochemical fields.

Abstract
A series of N-heterocyclic⊂VNU-23 materials have been prepared via the impregnation procedure of N-heterocyclic molecules into VNU-23. Their structural characterizations, PXRD, FT-IR, Raman, TGA, 1H-NMR, SEM-EDX, and EA, confirmed that N-heterocyclic molecules presented within the pores of parent VNU-23, leading to a remarkable enhancement in proton conductivity. Accordingly, the composite with the highest loading of imidazole, Im13.5⊂VNU-23, displays a maximum proton conductivity value of 1.58 × 10-2 S cm-1 (85% RH and 70 °C), which is ∼4476-fold higher than H+⊂VNU-23 under the same conditions. Remarkably, the proton conductivity of Im13.5⊂VNU-23 exceeds the values at 85% RH for several of the reported high-performing MOF materials. Furthermore, Im13.5⊂VNU-23 can retain a stable proton conductivity for more than 96 h, as evidenced by FT-IR and PXRD analyses. These results prove that this hybrid material possesses potential applications as a commercial proton exchange membrane fuel cell.

Abstract
A new type of metal-organic framework, [Cd2(pdc)(H2O)(DMA)2]n (pdc = 3,5-pyrazoledicarboxylic acid; DMA = dimethylamine), named Cd-MOF, was synthesized and characterized. There are regular rectangular pore channels containing a large number of dimethylamine cations in the crystal structure. AC impedance test results show the proton conductivity of Cd-MOF reaches 1.15 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 363 K and 98% RH. In order for its application in fuel cells, the Cd-MOF was introduced into a sulfonated polyphenylene oxide matrix to prepare a hybrid membrane, and the proton conductivity of the hybrid membrane has a high value of 2.64 × 10-1 S cm-1 at 343 K and 98% RH, which is higher than those of most MOF polymer hybrid membranes. The proton conductivity of the hybrid membrane of the SPPO polymer still maintains a certain degree of stability in a wide temperature range. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first proton exchange membrane that combines pyrazolecarboxylate cadmium MOFs and an SPPO polymer with high proton conductivity and good stability. This research may help to further develop the application of MOFs in the field of proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Abstract
A novel two-dimensional (2D) zeolitic imidazolate framework-graphene oxide hybrid nanocomposite (ZIF-L@GO) is designed as an inorganic filler in sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). ZIF-L with unique leaf-like morphology is grown in-situ on the GO sheet in aqueous media at room temperature. The terminal imidazole linker in ZIF-L@GO and the -SO3H in SPEEK can form acid-base pairs in the membrane interface to produce low energy proton conduction highway. Benefiting from the unique structural advantage, the hybrid SP-ZIF-L@GO membranes displayed promoted physicochemical and electrochemical performances over the pure SPEEK. The SP-ZIF-L@GO-5 achieved a proton conductivity of 0.265 and 0.0364 S cm-1 at 70 °C-100% RH and 90 °C-40% RH, 1.76- and 6.24-fold higher than pure SPEEK, respectively. Meanwhile, a single cell based on SP-ZIF-L@GO-5 had an output power up to 652.82 mW cm-2 at 60 °C, 1.45 times higher than the pure SPEEK. In addition, the durability test was performed by holding open circuit voltage (OCV) for 24 h. The SP-ZIF-L@GO-5 provided better long-term stability than the pure SPEEK. These superior performance suggests a promising application in PEMFC.

Abstract
Developing a robust metal-organic framework (MOF) which facilitates proton hopping along the pore channels is very demanding in the context of fabricating an efficient proton-conducting membrane for fuel cells. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel tetradentate aromatic phosphonate ligand H8 L (L=tetraphenylethylene tetraphosphonic acid) based Ni-MOF, whose crystal structure has been solved from single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Ni-MOF [Ni2 (H4 L)(H2 O)9 (C2 H7 SO)(C2 H7 NCO)] displays a monoclinic crystal structure with a space group of P 21 /c, a=11.887 Å, b=34.148 Å, c=11.131 Å, α=γ=90°, β=103.374°, where a nickel-hexahydrate moiety located inside the void space of the framework through several H-bonding interactions. Upon treatment of the Ni-MOF in different pH media as well as solvents, the framework remained unaltered, suggesting the presence of strong H-bonding interactions in the framework. High framework stability of Ni-MOF bearing H-bonding interactions motivated us to explore this metal-organic framework material as proton-conducting medium after external proton doping. Due to the presence of a large number of H-bonding interactions and the presence of water molecules in the framework we have carried out the doping of organic p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) and inorganic sulphuric acid (SA) in this Ni-MOF and observed high proton conductivity of 5.28×10-2 S cm-1 at 90 °C and 98% relative humidity for the SA-doped material. Enhancement of proton conductivity by proton doping under humid conditions suggested a very promising feature of this Ni-MOF.

Abstract
A sulfonated poly(aryl ether ketone sulfone) (SPAEKS) with locally dense sulfonic acid groups is synthesized and different amounts of TiO2 is doped into SPAEKS matrix to prepare composite membranes (SPAEKS/TiO2-x). SEM shows that TiO2 in the composite membranes has good dispersibility when TiO2 content is not higher than 3%. The composite membranes show good mechanical properties, dimensional stability and oxidative stability. The proton conductivity of composite membranes is near to that of Nafion 117 membrane and methanol permeability of composite membranes is much lower than that of Nafion 117 membrane. Therefore, the proton selectivity of composite membranes is higher than that of Nafion 117 membrane. In particular, proton selectivity of SPAEKS/TiO2-3% (12.8 × 104 S s cm−3) is four times higher than that of Nafion 117 membrane (3.2 × 104 S s cm−3).
