The challenges pertaining to the potable water scarcity and pollution motivates us to envision innovative strategies. Industrial wastewater containing hazardous heavy metals, synthetic dyes, and oil exacerbates the pursuit of clean drinking water. Among the array of available technologies, electrospun nanofiber membranes have garnered attention due to their efficiency, high surface-to-volume ratio, cost-effectiveness, scalability, and multifunctionality. These membranes possess distinct physical and chemical attributes that position them as ideal solutions to water purification challenges. Their versatility enables effective contaminant removal through filtration, adsorption, and chemical interactions. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) emerges as a frontrunner among electrospun polymers due to its affordability, remarkable physical and chemical characteristics, and the ease of production. Research efforts have been dedicated to the study of electrospun PAN membranes, exploring modifications in terms of the functionalization of PAN molecular chain, incorporation of appropriate nanoparticles, and composition with other functional polymers. Parameters such as functional groups, hydrophilicity, mechanical properties, porosity, pore structure, reusability, sustainability, zeta potential, and operational conditions significantly influence the performance of electrospun PAN membranes in treating the contaminated water. Despite progress, challenges surrounding fouling, toxicity, scalability, selectivity, and production costs ought to be addressed strategically to enhance their practicality and real-world viability. This review comprehensively scrutinizes the current landscape of available electrospun PAN membranes in water treatment encompassing diverse range of synthesized entities and experimental outcomes. Additionally, the review delves into various approaches undertaken to optimize the performance of electrospun PAN membranes while proposing potential strategies to overcome the existing hindrances. By carefully analyzing the parameters that impact the performance of these membranes, this overview offers invaluable guidelines for researchers and engineers, thus empowering them to design tailored electrospun nanofiber membranes for specific water purification applications. As the innovative research continues and strategic efforts address the current challenges, these membranes can play a pivotal role in enhancing water quality, mitigating water scarcity, and contributing to environmental sustainability. The widespread application of electrospun nanofiber membranes in water treatment has the potential to create a lasting positive impact on global water resources and the environment. A dedicated effort towards their implementation will undoubtedly mark a crucial step towards a more sustainable and water-secure future.

Abstract
Water resources are seriously threatened by dye wastewater, and the removal of the dye molecules from the wastewater has garnered considerable interest. People have favored photocatalytic technology in recent years for the treatment of dye wastewater. In this work, attapulgite (ATP) was used as a carrier, Fe3O4 and g-C3N4 were grafted onto ATP, and the surface was then modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to produce photocatalyst ATP-Fe3O4-g-C3N4-PEI, which was used in Malachite green (MG) dye wastewater. The structure and surface properties of the composites were analyzed and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray spectrum (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Uv-vis spectrum analysis, zeta potential measurement, and vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM) analysis. The removal performance of ATP-Fe3O4-gC3N4-PEI for MG was studied, and the removal mechanism was explored and revealed. It has been shown that the heterojunction formed by Fe3O4 and g-C3N4 can inhibit the compounding of photogenerated electrons and holes, effectively improving the performance of the ATP-Fe3O4-g-C3N4-PEI. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis confirmed that ATP-Fe3O4-g-C3N4-PEI could generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide radicals (·O2-) to degrade the MG. It was believed that ATP-Fe3O4-g-C3N4-PEI could generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH) through the photocatalysis and the Fenton reaction of the composite materials. Under the action of H+, ·O2-, and ·OH, the removal rate of MG by ATP-Fe3O4-g-C3N4-PEI exceeded 98 % at an optimal condition. The intermediate products and degradation pathways of MG degradation were also inferred by LC-MS analysis. These results showed that the prepared photocatalyst has excellent degradation performance for MG and could be used in dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Oil pollution caused by a large number of industrial activities and oil spill accidents has posed serious harm to the environment and human health. However, some challenges remain with the existing separation materials, such as poor stability and fouling resistance. Herein, a TiO2/SiO2 fiber membrane (TSFM) was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method for oil-water separation in acid, alkali, and salt environments. The TiO2 nanoparticles were successfully grown on the fiber surface, endowing the membrane with superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity. The as-prepared TSFM exhibits high separation efficiency (above 98%) and separation fluxes (3016.38-3263.45 L·m-2·h-1) for various oil-water mixtures. Importantly, the membrane shows good corrosion resistance in acid, alkaline, and salt solutions and still maintains underwater superoleophobicity and high separation performance. The TSFM displays good performance after repeated separation, demonstrating its excellent antifouling ability. Importantly, the pollutants on the membrane surface can be effectively degraded under light radiation to restore its underwater superoleophobicity, showing the unique self-cleaning ability of the membrane. In view of its good self-cleaning ability and environmental stability, the membrane can be used for wastewater treatment and oil spill recovery and has a broad application prospect in water treatment in complex environments.

Abstract
At present, the types of pollutants in wastewater are more and more complicated, however, the multifunctional membrane materials are in short supply. To prepare a membrane with both high efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation performance and photocatalytic degradation performance of organic dyes, the bifunctional separation membrane was successfully prepared by electrostatic spinning technology of PVDF/PEMA and in situ deposition of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles containing Ti3+ and oxygen vacancies (Ov). The prepared composite membrane has excellent hydrophilic properties (WCA = 15.65), underwater oleophobic properties (UOCA = 156.69), and photocatalytic performance. These composite membranes have high separation efficiency and outstanding anti-fouling performance, the oil removal efficiency reaches 98.95%, and the flux recovery rate (FRR) reaches 99.19% for soybean oil-in-water emulsion. In addition, the composite membrane has outstanding photocatalytic degradation performance, with 97% and 90.2% degradation of RhB and AG-25 under UV conditions, respectively. Several oil-in-water separation and dye degradation experiments show that the PVDF composite membrane has excellent reuse performance. Based on these results, this study opens new avenues for the preparation of multifunctional reusable membranes for the water treatment field.

Abstract
Water pollution caused by oil spills or sewage discharges has become a serious ecological environmental issue. Despite the membrane separation technique having a promising application in wastewater purification, the membrane fabrication method and separation robustness have remained unsatisfactory until now. Herein, we developed a novel strategy, spacer-assisted sequential phase conversion, to create a patterned polyvinylidene fluoride@polypropylene (P-PVDF@PP) substrate membrane with a multiscale roughened surface. Based on that surface structure, the underwater oil resistance behavior of the P-PVDF@PP membrane was improved. Moreover, owing to the abundant active sites on the P-PVDF@PP surface, the polydopamine/P-PVDF@PP (PDA/P-PVDF@PP) Janus membrane could be readily fabricated via wet chemical modification, which exhibited excellent switchable oil-water separation performance. Regarding surfactant-stabilized oil-water emulsion, the as-prepared PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane also had robust separation efficiency (as high as 99% in the n-hexane/water, chloroform/water, and toluene/water emulsion separation cases) and desirable reusability. Finally, the underlying mechanism of emulsion separation in the PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane was specified. The as-designed PDA/P-PVDF@PP Janus membrane with high-efficiency oil-water separation shows potential application in oily wastewater treatment, and the developed fabrication method has implications for the fabrication of advanced separation membranes.

Abstract
Fog-harvesting devices (FHDs) have been widely explored and applied to alleviate the shortage of fresh water. However, during the fog collection process, how to maintain a balance between fog capture and water removal behaviors to enhance the water collection rate still remains a challenge. Herein, inspired by the Stenocara beetle, we combined a beetle-like Janus surface and the conventional cross-sectional Janus structure together, developed a simple spray-and-dry strategy to obtain three types of biomimetic asymmetric meshes, and explored the working modes for atmospheric fog collection. The surface wettability could be carefully controlled, and various asymmetric meshes with different water transportation behaviors were obtained. Through a detailed study of the fog collection process, we concluded that there existed three main working modes: Janus mode, hybrid mode, and Janus and hybrid mode. It was noted that the dual-directional Janus pump with the Janus and hybrid working mode balanced the fog capture and water removal ability and exhibited the highest water collection rate of 2478.73 mg m-2 h-1, which was 2.61 times more than that of the corresponding superhydrophilic mesh. Furthermore, the prepared dual-directional Janus pump showed superior mechanical durability and antibacterial ability. In general, this work was considered instrumental in the reasonable design of biomimetic asymmetric meshes and could provide references for efficient atmospheric fog harvesting.

Abstract
Globally, developing countries require access to safe drinking water to support human health and facilitate long-term sustainable development, in which waste management and control are critical tasks. As the most plentiful, renewable biopolymer on earth, cellulose has significant utility in the delivery of potable water for human consumption. Herein, recent developments in the application of nanoscale cellulose and cellulose derivatives for water treatment are reviewed, with reference to the properties and structure of the material. The potential application of nanocellulose as a primary component for water treatment is linked to its high aspect ratio, high surface area, and the high number of hydroxyl groups available for molecular interaction with heavy metals, dyes, oil-water separation, and other chemical impurities. The ability of superhydrophobic nanocellulose-based textiles as functional fabrics is particularly acknowledged as designed structures for advanced water treatment systems. This review covers the adsorption of heavy metals and chemical impurities like dyes, oil-water separation, as well as nanocellulose and nanostructured derivative membranes, and superhydrophobic coatings, suitable for adsorbing chemical and biological pollutants, including microorganisms.

Abstract
Water pollution caused by oil leakage or oily sewage has seriously threatened the ecological environment and human health. It remains a tough task for scientists to develop versatile materials to purify different kinds of oily wastewater. In this study, we propose a facile "carbon nanotubes (CNTs) decoration and nanofibrous membrane integration" method to prepare a mechanical robust Janus membrane (JM) composed of a superhydrophilic nanofiber composite layer and a hydrophobic nanofiber composite layer. The asymmetric wettability can be controlled by tuning the thickness of the hydrophobic layer. The nanofiber composite in both two layers possesses a core-shell structure, guaranteeing the excellent flexibility and stretchability of the JM. In addition, the strong interfacial compatibility between the two layers ensures the stability and durability of the JM even after multiple stretching. More importantly, the JM could realize on-demand separation of different kinds of oily wastewater with high separation flux and separation efficiency, including oil/water mixtures with different oil densities, oil-in-water emulsions and water-in-oil emulsions. Furthermore, the JM exhibits cycling stability and long-term serviceability for the emulsion separation. The mechanically robust and stretchable JM has promising applications in purification of various oil contaminated wastewater.

Abstract
Oily wastewater from industries has an adverse impact on the environment, human and aquatic life. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane modified with a zwitterionic/hydrophobic pentapolymer (PP) with controlled pore size has been utilized to separate oil from water from their nano-emulsions. The PP has been synthesized in 91% yield via pentapolymerization of four different diallylamine salts [(CH2=CHCH2)2NH+(CH2)x A-], bearing CO2-, PO3H-, SO3-, (CH2)12NH2 pendants, and SO2 in a respective mol ratio of 25:36:25:14:100. Incorporating PP into PVDF has shown a substantially reduced membrane hydrophobicity; the contact angle decreased from 92.5° to 47.4°. The PP-PVDF membranes have demonstrated an excellent capability to deal with the high concentrations of nano-emulsions with a separation efficiency of greater than 97.5%. The flux recovery ratio (FRR) of PP-5 incorporated PVDF membrane was about 82%, which was substantially higher than the pristine PVDF.

Abstract
There have been many studies on special wetting surfaces, but most of them just stay superlyophobic in air or underwater. In this work, a membrane with photoresponse is fabricated by spraying hybrid particles of silicon and titanium dioxide. Under the combined action of hybrid particles and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane, the prepared membrane is superhydrophobic in air. Because of the presence of titanium dioxide, the membrane can realize the transformation from superoleophilic underwater to superoleophobic underwater through UV irradiation and heating. Surprisingly, the membranes with superoleophobicity underwater are also superhydrophobic underoil. Thanks to this unique wettability transition, the prepared membrane can be applied to emulsion separation and fog harvesting. This is inspiring for the preparation and the multifunctional application of multiphase media superlyophobic surfaces.
