Abstract
The triple role of 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (proton sponge) as a reductant, ligand precursor, and organic base in the palladium-catalyzed Heck-type coupling reaction of glycals with aryl iodides affords the rapid and stereoselective synthesis of 2',3'-unsaturated α-C-aryl glycosides in excellent yields. The role of the proton sponge in reducing palladium(II) to (0) has been studied using cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis, HRMS, and other spectroscopic techniques. This is the first example of a palladium proton sponge complex utilized in coupling reactions. The method is observed to be tolerant of various functional groups, as demonstrated by the huge substrate scope. Moreover, the 2',3'-unsaturated α-C-aryl glycosides were also converted to 3-keto-β-C-glycosides under sterically hindered pyridinium salt catalysis via a ring-opening and -closing mechanism.

Abstract
Hydroxides of superalkalis (particularly, K- and Na-related species) are shown for the first time to function as superbases. A new small series of hydroxides (XM n+1OH) is designed based on superalkali species (XM n+1) where M (K and Na) is alkali metal atoms, n is the maximal formal valence of the central atom X (F, O, and N), and n ≥ 1. To probe whether such fascinating polynuclear superalkali hydroxides (SAHs), especially the K- and Na-associated moieties are as basic as the representative alkali metal hydroxides (KOH, NaOH, and LiOH) as well as similar Li-based SAHs, a comprehensive computational exploration (in the gas phase) has been reported using the framework of an ab initio method. The ab initio calculations reveal that both the K- and Na-related SAHs consisting of larger gas-phase proton affinity (PA) and gas-phase basicity (GB) values demonstrate stronger basic character compared to the LiOH and Li-based SAHs. However, the available SAHs act as strong bases as well as superbases; among the proposed K- and Na-based SAHs, remarkably, the OK3OH moiety having the highest PA (1168.4 kJ/mol) and GB (1146.9 kJ/mol) values shows the evidence of the strongest basicity (i.e., superbase/hyperbase), which exceed enough (ΔPA: 142.1 kJ/mol and ΔGB: 146.9 kJ/mol) the IUPAC-defined superbasicity threshold values (PA: 1026.3 kJ/mol and GB: 1000 kJ/mol) of 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (DMAN). Furthermore, theoretical signatures have been predicted via the electronic structure calculation approach in probing the dissociation energy, ionization potential, electron affinity, HOMO-LUMO gap, and chemical hardness as well as the NCI plot and QTAIM tools are used for the bonding feature analysis and such parameters are well linked with the basicity analyzing parameters. In this study, the ab initio-based computational experiments provide some new insights into the basicity features and understanding of the structural and electronic features of a small series of designed K- and Na-related SAHs. Design and synthesis of such theoretically examined SAHs may pave alternative routes for the experimentally rewarding applications.

Abstract
A series of previously unknown 2,4,5-tri- and 2,4,5,7-tetrasubstituted 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalenes and their salts with HBF4 containing bulky spherically shaped substituents (Me, Br, and SiMe3) in the naphthalene ring has been synthesized. Using XRD analysis of 11 samples, the influence of the so-called "buttressing" and "clothespin" effects on their molecular structure and the NHN hydrogen bond geometry in the solid cations were investigated. The combined action of both effects has been shown to significantly increase the compression of the hydrogen bond. As a result, the previous record of the hydrogen bond shortness (N···N = 2.524 Å) has been surpassed in favor of 2.502 Å found for the tetrafluoroborate of 2,4,5,7-tetramethyl-1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene. The molecular structure of the latter differs by perfect symmetry and practically barrier-free proton transfer in the [NHN]+ bond. On the basis of the results of quantum-chemical calculations, it is suggested that the value of 2.502 Å likely represents or lies very close to the theoretical limit for the short hydrogen bonds between the amine-type nitrogen atoms.

Abstract
An unsymmetrical guanidine-cyclopropenimine proton sponge DAGUN and the related BF2 -chelate DAGBO are reported. Insight into the structural, electronic, bonding and photophysical properties of these two molecules are presented. Joint experimental and theoretical studies reveal the protonated form of DAGUN possesses an intramolecular N⋅⋅⋅H-N hydrogen bond which affords a high experimental pKBH+ of 26.6 (computed=26.3). Photophysical studies show that in solution DAGUN displays a green emission at 534 nm, with a large Stokes shift of 235 nm (14,718 cm-1 ). In contrast, the conjugate acid DAGUN-H+ is only weakly emissive due to attenuated intramolecular charge transfer. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that DAGBO contains a stable tetracoordinate boronium cation, reminiscent of the well-established BODIPY family of dyes. In solution, DAGBO exhibits a strong blue emission at 450 nm coupled with a large Stokes shift (Δλ=158 nm, Δν=11,957 cm-1 ) and quantum yield of 62 %, upon excitation at 293 nm. DAGBO sets the stage as the first entry into a new class of boron-difluoride diaminonaphthalenes (BOFDANs) that represent highly fluorescent and tunable next-generation dyes with future promise for biosensing and bioimaging applications.

Abstract
The protonation of the carboxamide nitrogen atom is an essential part of in vivo and in vitro processes (cis-trans isomerization, amides hydrolysis etc). This phenomenon is well studied in geometrically strongly distorted amides, although there is little data concerning the protonation of undistorted amides. In the latter case, the participation of amide nitrogen in hydrogen bonding (which can be regarded as the incipient state of a proton transfer process) is less well-studied. Thus, it would be a worthy goal to investigate the enthalpy of this interaction. We prepared and investigated a set of peri-substituted naphthalenes containing the protonated dimethylamino group next to the amide nitrogen atom ("amide proton sponges"), which could serve as models for the study of an intramolecular hydrogen bond with the amide nitrogen atom. X-Ray analysis, NMR spectra, basicity values as well as quantum chemical calculations revealed the existence of a hydrogen bond with the amide nitrogen, that should be attributed to the borderline between moderate and weak intramolecular hydrogen bonds (2-7 kcal ⋅ mol-1 ).

Abstract
"Proton sponges," derivatives of prototypic 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (DMAN), exhibit remarkable basicity, which made them interesting for various experimental and theoretical studies. The details of bridged proton dynamics in protonated DMAN and its derivative denoted as TMGN (1,8-bis(tetramethylguanidino)naphthalene) were investigated on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) and Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) methods. Special attention was paid to the effects of symmetry of the molecular skeleton and the type of substituent on the bridged proton neighborhood statistics and dynamics. The metric parameter analyses of hydrogen bridge provided us with a conclusion that proton migration events in TMGNH+ are less numerous than in DMANH+, which can be rationalized by noticing the slower dynamics of large substituents of TMGN with respect to the smaller -N(Me)2 groups of DMAN. The atomic velocity power spectra served as computational models of the vibrational signatures associated with the presence of the intramolecular hydrogen bond. A broad feature was registered for hydrogen bonds present in both compounds. The computations were verified by experimental data available.

Abstract
The synthesis, as well as spectral, structural and photoluminescence properties of dipyrido[3,2-e:2',3'-h]acenaphthene 5 and quinazolino[7,8-h]quinazolines 6 as representatives of the bidentate -N[double bond, length as m-dash]/-N[double bond, length as m-dash] superbases, are reported. These nitrogen bases being more rigid (5) or π-extended (6) analogs of optically-mute quino[7,8-h]quinoline are both active in terms of fluorescence with quantum yields up to φ = 0.71-0.77. At the same time, their luminescence behavior is opposite to that of peri-NMe2/NMe2 naphthalene proton sponges and their hybrid NMe2/-N[double bond, length as m-dash] analogs. Although 5 and 6 exhibit visible region emission upon protonation, for the hybrid systems the fluorescence is manifested only for bases. The most remarkable observation is that the fluorescence of compound 5 can be switched on not only by means of organic or inorganic acids, but also through the formation of chelate complexes with such weak H-donors as water and primary alcohols. It was disclosed that water is present in the complex as a cluster comprising 8 interconnected H2O molecules. Overall, the studied compounds demonstrate a previously unobserved type of dual mode optical response, H-sensing (emission enhancement in 5 and 6 on protonation) and π-sensing (emission quenching in 5H+ and 6H+ on coordination with π-donors). This work seems to be an important contribution to areas such as chemosensorics, the creation of new ligands, hydrogen transfer and some other phenomena representing different types of supramolecular interactions.

Abstract
9-Dimethylaminobenzo[ g]indoles 3-6 and 1-dimethylamino-8-(pyrrolyl-1)naphthalene 7 were examined as possible models for establishing the ability of the pyrrole nitrogen atom to participate in [NHN]+ hydrogen bonding as a proton acceptor. Indoles 3-5 (to a lesser extent 6) form rather stable tetrafluoroborates, with the proton mostly located on the NMe2 group but simultaneously engaged in the formation of a charged intramolecular [NHN]+ hydrogen bond (IHB) with the pyrrole N atom. The theoretically estimated energies of IHB in salts 3H+BF4--6H+BF4- vary between 7.0-10.7 and 6.2-7.0 kcal mol-1 in vapor and MeCN, respectively. The pyrrole N atom undergoes a perceptible pyramidalization but still remains involved in the 6π-electron aromatic system, suggesting that the hydrogen bonding in salts 3H+BF4--6H+BF4- represents a previously unknown mixed NH···N(n,π) interaction. Despite the favorable orientation of the N-H bond and the pyrrole ring in salt 7H+BF4-, no signs of NH···N(n) bonding in it were noticed, and the existing interaction was classified as pure NH···N(π). The results obtained may be useful in studies of secondary protein structures, especially those α-helix sections which contain tryptophan residues.

Abstract
peri-Disubstituted naphthalenes exhibit interesting physical properties and unique chemical reactivity, due to the parallel arrangement of the bonds to the two peri-disposed substituents. Regioselective installation of a functional group at the position peri to 1-substituted naphthalenes is challenging due to the steric interaction between the existing substituent and the position at which the second one would be installed. We report an iridium-catalyzed borylation of the C-H bond peri to a silyl group in naphthalenes and analogous polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The reaction occurs under mild conditions with wide functional group tolerance. The silyl group and the boryl group in the resulting products are precursors to a range of functional groups bound to the naphthalene ring through C-C, C-O, C-N, C-Br and C-Cl bonds.

Hydrogen bridges of polycyclic aromatic systems with O-H···O bonds--a gas-phase vs. solid-state Car-Parrinello study. J Mol Model 2015; 21:15. Abstract
The current study belongs to a series of investigations of polycyclic aromatic compounds containing intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Close proximity of the coupled aromatic system and hydrogen bridges gives rise to resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding phenomena. Substituted naphthols are ideally suited for this kind of investigation. The parent compound, 1-hydroxy-8-methoxy-3-methylnaphthalene, and its derivative, 1-bromo-5-hydroxy-4-isopropoxy-7-methylnaphthalene, both with known crystal structure, are investigated. Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) is chosen as a theoretical background for this study. Gas phase and solid state simulations are carried out. The effect of Grimme’s dispersion corrections is also included. The report presents time evolution of structural parameters, spectroscopic signatures based on the CPMD simulations, and comparison with available experimental data. We show that the proton transfer phenomena do not occur within the simulations, which is consistent with evaluation based on the acidity of the donor and acceptor sites. The effects of the substitution in the aromatic system and change of the environment (gas vs. condensed phase) are of similar magnitude.
