Collaborative Simulation Training: Strategies Used to Teach Root Cause Analysis Leadership Competencies

Considered the norm in multiple academic settings, simulation provided a low-risk, transformational clinical learning environment across programs at a college of nursing. Undergraduate nursing students received feedback from practicing nurses, whereas graduate nursing students honed skills in evaluative feedback and communication. This intraprofessional learning opportunity cultivated a rich learning environment. Feedback revealed that the learning milieu was permeated with opportunities needed for skills, competencies, and leadership development. Focusing on the concept of root cause analysis, this experience provided nurse administration students with hands-on exposure that would ultimately lead to developing competencies needed for roles in nursing leadership.

Nurses' expectations about the succession of leaders in the hospital context

Objective:

to analyze the expectation of nurses about the succession of leaders in the hospital context.

Method:

a descriptive and exploratory study of a qualitative approach carried out with 36 nurses from a public university hospital selected using the snowball technique. The data collection was done through semi-structured interviews that were recorded and analyzed based on the assumptions of the Content Analysis technique, Thematic modality. Ethical criteria were adequately met.

Results:

the reports comprised two central categories, “Who Will Take My Place?” and “Potential and Openness to Plan the Succession of Leadership in Nursing,” the latter being divided into two subcategories: “Nursing leadership in the hospital five years from now” and “Strengths for the implementation of a leadership succession plan”.

Conclusion:

from the results, positive aspects of the diagnosis of the leadership profile in the institution that favor the development of succession planning were verified. In addition, it was possible to perceive the necessity of the development of this planning in the hospital and its importance for the succession of leadership in Nursing. In this context, this study presents itself with an innovative character for exposing a theme that aims to potentiate the future of Nursing.

Nurse Leader DNP Capstone Projects Evaluation: An Action Framework

BACKGROUND

Little is known about available guidelines that can be used to evaluate health systems' Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) capstone projects.

OBJECTIVES

The twofold purpose of this study was to identify the scope of nurse executive leadership practices, as demonstrated in final health systems' DNP Projects and propose a framework to guide evaluating health systems' DNP capstone projects.

METHODS

This qualitative study used content analysis to evaluate DNP project posters of 10 health systems' DNP students graduating from one Midwestern college of nursing. Students were engaged in activities pertinent to managerial and executive-level nurse leaders.

RESULTS

Students were engaged in activities pertinent to both managerial and executive level nurse leaders and followed AONE competencies. Leadership styles were operational and transformational. Six types of activities were identified. Leadership activities and themes were organized into a framework for action that can guide curriculum.

CONCLUSIONS

The Framework for Action themes can be used to coach students in nurse manager or executive roles and identify developmental needs of students.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING

A specific new competency on impact is indicated. Use of simulation techniques is an opportunity in health systems education.

Career Mapping for Professional Development and Succession Planning

Career mapping facilitates professional development of nurses by education specialists and nurse managers. On the basis of national Nursing Professional Development Scope and Standards, our education and professional development framework supports the organization's professional practice model and provides a foundation for the professional career map. This article describes development, implementation, and evaluation of the professional career map for nurses at a large children's hospital to support achievement of the nursing strategic goals for succession planning and professional development.
