Abstract
Meeting the contemporary demand for the development of functional, biocompatible, and environment friendly self-assembled structures using efficient, cost-effective, and energy-saving methods, the field of colloids has witnessed a surge in interest. Research into cationic and anionic (catanionic) surfactant combinations has gained momentum due to their distinct advantages and synergistic properties in this context. Catanionic self-assemblies have emerged as promising contenders for addressing these requirements. Catanionic self-assemblies possess high stability, adjustable surface charge, and low critical aggregation concentration. This comprehensive review article distinguishes between cationic/anionic non-equimolar and equimolar ratio mixing formation of high-salt catanionic self-assemblies known as catanionic mixture and salt-free counterparts, termed ion-pair amphiphiles, respectively. It explores diverse synthesis techniques, emphasizing the roles of solvents, salts, and pH conditions and covers both experimental and theoretical aspects of state-of-the-art catanionic self-assemblies. Additionally, the review investigates the development of multi-responsive catanionic self-assemblies using light, pH, temperature, and redox, responsive cationic/anionic amphiphiles. It provides an in-depth exploration of potential synergistic interactions and properties, underscoring their practical importance in a wide range of industrial applications. The review explores challenges like precipitation, stability and identifies knowledge gaps, creating opportunities in the dynamic catanionic self-assembly field. It aims to offer insights into the journey of catanionic self-assemblies, from inception to current status, appealing to a broad audience invested in their scientific and industrial potential.

Abstract
One-lung ventilation (OLV) during thoracic surgery often leads to post-operative complications, yet effective pharmacological interventions are lacking. This study reports a baicalin-based metal-coordination nanomedicine with disulfiram (DSF) co-loading to address one-lung ventilation-induced lung injury and reperfusion injury (OLV-LIRI). Baicalin, known for its robust antioxidant properties, suffers from poor water solubility and stability. Leveraging nanotechnology, baicalin's coordination is systematically explored with seven common metal ions, designing iron/copper-mediated binary coordination nanoparticles to overcome these limitations. The self-assembled nanoparticles, primarily formed through metal coordination and π-π stacking forces, encapsulated DSF, ensuring high colloidal stability in diverse physiological matrices. Upon a single-dose administration via endotracheal intubation, the nanoparticles efficiently accumulate in lung tissues and swiftly penetrate the pulmonary mucosa. Intracellularly, baicalin exhibits free radical scavenging activity to suppress inflammation. Concurrently, the release of Cu2+ and DSF enables the in situ generation of CuET, a potent inhibitor of cell pyroptosis. Harnessing these multifaceted mechanisms, the nanoparticles alleviate lung injury symptoms without notable toxic side effects, suggesting a promising preventive strategy for OLV-LIRI.

Abstract
The formation of aggregates, which are widely used in the field of biochemistry and the medical industry, was studied with different compositions of alkyl betaine gemini surfactant (C14Ab) in conjugation with chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CPZ). The results were compared with those of a single-chain zwitterionic surfactant (C12DmCB) of the same type with CPZ. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods were used to distinguish the aggregates for the CPZ/C14Ab system in aqueous solutions above a certain mole fraction of the drug CPZ (αCPZ = 0.2). Time-resolved fluorescence decay measurements of acridine orange revealed relative polarity near the head group regions of mixed micelle (CPZ/C14Ab and CPZ/C12DmCB) systems. The hydrophilic environment around the head group regions of the CPZ/C14Ab system was different from that in the case of the CPZ/C12DmCB system. On the other hand, several theoretical models were employed (Clint, Rubingh, Motomura, and SPB) for mixed micellar systems to elucidate the different interaction parameters. Such a systematic study of a zwitterionic gemini amphiphile and its interaction with other amphiphiles and an amphiphilic drug molecule is rare in the literature.

Abstract
In the present study, the interaction behaviour of 12–2–12 Gemini surfactant in aqueous saccharide solutions (lactose and maltodextrin solutions) is investigated using density, sound velocity and viscosity measurements. The density and sound velocity data were used to determine the volume and compressibility parameters. The effects of temperature and concentration/strength of the solutions on the interaction behaviour were analysed by conductivity studies over a wide temperature (293.15–313.15) K and concentration range of the saccharides as well as of the surfactant. It was found that predominantly hydrophobic interactions together with ionic/hydrophilic interactions between 12–2–12 Gemini surfactant and the saccharides maltodextrin and lactose play a role. In addition, the structural changes in the 12–2–12 Gemini solutions induced by lactose and maltodextrin were investigated by viscosity measurements. The results confirm the observations from the volume and compressibility studies. The study of the different hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions in the Gemini surfactant-sacharide-water mixtures are very helpful to understand the structural behaviour of Gemini surfactants in the view of their biological significance.

Abstract
Surfactants are ubiquitous materials that are used in diverse formulations of various products. For instance, they improve the formulation of gel by improving its wetting and rheological properties. Here, we describe the effects of anionic surfactants on an anesthetic drug, tetracaine hydrochloride (TCH), in NaCl solution with tensiometry and UV–visible techniques. Various micellar, interfacial, and thermodynamic parameters were estimated. The outputs were examined by using different theoretical models to attain a profound knowledge of drug–surfactant mixtures. The presence of attractive interactions among drug and surfactant monomers (synergism) in mixed micelle was inferred. However, it was found that sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) showed greater interactions with the drug in comparison to sodium lauryl sarcosine (SLS). The binding of the drug with surfactants was monitored with a spectroscopic technique (UV–visible spectra). The results of this study could help optimize the compositions of these mixed aggregates and find the synergism between monomers of different used amphiphiles.

Abstract
Herein, the conductivity measurement technique is used to determine the interactions that may occur between polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) polymer and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) surfactant in the presence of NaCl and Na2SO4 of fixed concentration at variable temperatures (298.15-323.15 K) with an interval of 5 K. In the absence or presence of salts, we observed three critical micelle concentrations (CMC) for the CPC + PVP mixture. In all situations, CMC1 values of CPC + PVP system were found to be higher in water than in attendance of salts (NaCl and Na2SO4). Temperature and additives have the tendency to affect counterion binding values. Various physico-chemical parameters were analyzed and demonstrated smoothly, including free energy (ΔG0m), enthalpy (ΔH0m) and entropy change (ΔS0m). The micellization process is achieved to be spontaneous based on the obtained negative ΔG0m values. The linearity of the ΔHmo and ΔSmo values is excellent. The intrinsic enthalpy gain (ΔH0*m) and compensation temperature (Tc) were calculated and discussed with logical points. Interactions of polymer hydrophobic chains or the polymer + surfactant associated with amphiphilic surface-active drugs can employ a strong impact on the behavior of the gels.

Abstract
In drug delivery, surfactants are used to reduce side effects and to increase drug efficiency. The present work aimed to study the interaction of diphenhydramine hydrochloride (anti-allergic drug) with TX–45 (non-ionic surfactant) in the absence and presence of ionic liquid (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride). The physicochemical parameters were estimated by the surface tension measurement. Various theoretical models (Clint, Rubingh, Motomura, and Maeda) were applied to determine the attractive behavior between drug and surfactant mixtures at the surface and in bulk. The drug and surfactant mixtures exhibit synergistic behavior in the absence and presence of ionic liquid. Several energetic parameters were also estimated with the assistance of regular solution approximation and pseudo phase separation model that indicate micelle formation and adsorption of surfactant at the surface is thermodynamically advantageous. The morphology of pure and mixture of amphiphiles has been estimated by the Tanford and Israelachvili theories. UV-visible spectroscopy was used to quantify the attractive behavior of the drug with surfactant with the help of a binding constant (K).

Abstract
This mini review will give an insight into the need and usefulness of investigating the solubilization of poorly soluble drugs. Commonly used experimental and theoretical models are outlined to study the efficacy of the carrier or excipient for the poorly soluble drugs. Furthermore, the use of surface active agents for drug solubilization is discussed in correlation with the mathematical models suggested from time to time. A few experimental techniques are also discussed which would be very helpful in elucidating the interactions prevailing in the mixed systems of poorly soluble drugs and surface active agents.

Abstract
The focus of the present work is to evaluate the interactions of an anti-allergic drug (diphenhydramine hydrochloride, DPH) with anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) and cationic (cetylpyridinium chloride, CPC) surfactants in the aqueous medium. The mixed micellization behavior and surface properties of drug-surfactant mixtures have been examined by surface tension measurements. Various theoretical approaches were applied to explore the synergistic or non-ideal behavior of the current mixed systems. Furthermore, the binding studies of drug with surfactants have been elaborated by UV–visible spectroscopy. Benesi–Hildebrand (B-H) theory was used to compute stoichiometric ratio, binding constant, and free energy change for the drug-surfactant mixtures. The outputs are deliberated taking into consideration the use of surfactants as capable drug delivery agents for DPH and hence advance bioavailability.

Abstract
Herein, the interaction among the antidepressant drug amitriptyline hydrochloride (AMT) and a green gemini surfactant, ethane-1, 2-diyl bis(N,N-dimethyl-N-tetradecylammoniumacetoxy) dichloride (14-E2-14), via numerous techniques such as tensiometry, fluorimetry, FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopy in three different media (aqueous 0.050 mol·kg-1 NaCl, 0.50 and 1.0 mol·kg-1 urea) were investigated. AMT is used to treat mental illness or mood problems, such as depression. The aggregation of biologically active ingredients can enhance the bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs. A significant interaction between AMT and 14-E2-14 was detected by tensiometric study as the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of AMT+14-E2-14 is reduced upon an increase of mole fraction (α1) of 14-E2-14. The decrease in cmc indicates the nonideality of studied mixtures of different compositions. Although, employed drug AMT is freely soluble in the aqueous and non-aqueous system but is not hydrophobic enough to act as its carrier. Instead, gemini surfactant formed spherical micelles in an aqueous system and their high solubilization capability, as well as their relatively lower cmc value, makes them highly stable in vivo. The cmc values of AMT+14-E-14 mixtures in all cases were further decreased and increased in NaCl and urea solutions respectively as compared with the aqueous system. Numerous micellar, interfacial, and thermodynamic parameters have been measured by applying various theoretical models. The obtained changes in the physicochemical assets of AMT upon adding of 14-E2-14 are likely to enhance the industrial and pharmaceutical applications of gemini surfactants. The negative interaction parameters (βm and βσ), indicate synergistic attraction is occurring in the mixed systems. The aggregation number (Nagg), Stern–Volmer constant (Ksv), etc. are attained through the fluorescence method, also supporting the attractive interaction behavior of AMT+14-E2-14 mixtures in all solvents. The Nagg was found to increase in the salt solution and decrease in the urea system compared with the aqueous solution. FT-IR and UV-visible analysis also depict the interaction between the constituent alike tensiometry and fluorimetry methods. The results suggested that gemini surfactants may serve as a capable drug delivery agent for antidepressants, improving their bioavailability.

Abstract
Abstract
Herein, we investigated the micelle formation of mixed systems of the antipsychotic drug, chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CPZ), and the bile salt, sodium deoxycholate (NaDC), both in the absence and presence of NaCl by tensiometry. To understand the aggregation behaviour of the mixture of these two amphiphiles, we calculated various micellar and interfacial parameters using the theories of Clint, Rubingh, Rosen and Motomura. The calculated interaction parameters indicate an attractive interaction between the two amphiphiles both in the absence and presence of salt. The results were discussed with regard to the use of bile salt as a promising drug carrier for CPZ and the improvement of its bioavailability.

Abstract
The self-assembly of pharmaceutical amphiphiles is an important area of research because of the involvement of these amphiphiles in physiological processes. The mixed micellization behavior of antipsychotic drug (chlorpromazine hydrochloride, CPZ) in the presence of bile salt (sodium cholate, SC) was studied by surface tension and fluorescence techniques in aqueous/urea solution. The output of the study has been analyzed by using different models (Clint, Rubingh, and Motomura) for mixed amphiphilic systems. The attractive or synergistic interactions between these two amphiphiles in water/urea were confirmed by the obtained data. Various thermodynamic parameters for the mixed micellization process have been computed and discussed.

Abstract
Herein, we have investigated the interaction of bovine serum albumin (BSA), the most abundant globular protein, with a conventional cationic surfactant, cetyldimethylethylammonium bromide (CDMEAB), through a conductivity technique in the absence/presence of electrolyte solutions at various temperatures (298.15-323.15 K). The interaction of the protein with drugs/surfactants and other additives plays a crucial role in the body. Hence, the main concern of the study is to extract the impact of BSA on surfactant molecules and vice versa. From the specific conductivity versus concentration of surfactant plots, three different noticeable critical micelle concentration (c*) values were obtained for pure CDMEAB and its mixture with protein/protein + salts. The presence of BSA and electrolytes altered the c* values of CDMEAB revealing interactions among the studied constituents where the salt solutions reduced the c* values and created a convenient environment for favorable micellization. The negative magnitudes achieved for standard free energy changes (ΔG 0 m) suggest spontaneity of micellization while the values of ΔH 0 m and ΔS 0 m signified the existence of some electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. The values of molar heat capacity (ΔC 0 m) were positive as well as small which was an indication of less structural deformation. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation for all atoms revealed that the salt ions promoted non-covalent interaction between BSA and CDMEAB, and such interactions were not observed in the absence of the salt. Protein structure remained nearly same in spite of strong interaction with CDMEAB as evident from the overall RMSD (root-mean-square deviation) values of the alpha carbons and backbone of the protein and RMSF (root-mean-square fluctuation) values of the amino acid residues present in BSA. In this work thermodynamic parameters of transfer (such as ΔG 0 m.tr., ΔH 0 m.tr., and ΔC 0 p.m.tr.) were also evaluated and the results are discussed in detail. Besides, contributions of enthalpy and entropy to free energy changes were also analyzed.

Abstract
Ibuprofen (IBF), 2-(4-isobutylphenyl) propionic acid, is a surface-active, common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and it possesses a high critical micelle concentration (cmc) compared to that of conventional surfactants. The interactions of this common NSAID with an anionic surfactant, sodium octyl sulfosuccinate, were studied by tensiometric, fluorimetric, and calorimetric measurements to investigate this system as a possible model drug-delivery system for an NSAID like IBF, particularly in a high-dose regime for IBF. The interactions between the drug and the surfactant were modeled using a regular solution theory approach in the presence and absence of a model electrolyte (sodium iodide) and a novel nonaromatic, gemini hydrotrope, tetramethylene-1,4-bis( N, N-dimethyl- N-butylammonium)bromide (4-4-4). Both the simple and the hydrotropic electrolyte were shown to have an effect on the solution properties (aggregation parameters, interfacial properties, and thermodynamics of aggregate formation) of the drug-surfactant mixtures and on the interaction between the drug and the surfactant. Surface charges of all self-assembled systems were estimated from ζ-potential measurements, whereas density functional theory calculations showed the interaction energy comparison among all of the binary and ternary combinations. All of these results were interpreted in terms of how altering the subtle balance of hydrophobic and electrostatic forces can significantly improve the ability of these self-assembled systems to transport drug molecules.
