A new dendrimer-functionalized magnetic nanosorbent for the efficient adsorption and subsequent trace measurement of Hg (II) ions in wastewater samples

A novel "turn-on" fluorescent probe based on thiocarbamoyl-DHP for Hg2+ detection in water samples and living cells

In this study, two fluorescent sensing probes, dihydropyridine (DHP) derivatives (DHP-CT1 and DHP-CT2) bearing phenoxy thiocarbonyl group, have been developed for Hg2+ detection. The tandem trimerization-cyclization of methylpropiolate with ammonium acetate gave 1.4-DHP and 1,2-DHP derivatives, which were reacted with O-phenylcarbonochloridothioate to produce DHP-CT1 and DHP-CT2, respectively. DHP-CT1 exhibits superior sensitivity and selectivity of fluorescence enhancement towards Hg2+ in aqueous media. The fluorescence intensity shows a good linear relationship with the concentration of Hg2+ in the range of 0-10 µM providing the extremely low LOD of 346 nM (69.4 ppb). The fluorescence enhancement is caused by the Hg2+ promoted hydrolysis of the thioamide bond releasing the fluorescent 1,4-DHP that was confirmed by NMR and HRMS. The quantitative analysis of Hg2+ in water samples using DHP-CT1 probe was demonstrated in aqueous solution and paper-based sensing strips. Furthermore, DHP-CT1 was also applied for monitoring intracellular Hg2+ in living RAW264.7 macrophages through fluorescence cell imaging.

Single-vial preconcentration and cold vapor generation for the determination of Hg(II) in water samples of different salinities

In this work, a single-vial methodology for the extraction and cold vapor generation of mercury(II) was developed, followed by the determination of the analyte by atomic absorption spectrometry, with application in water samples of different salinities. L-cystine-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (2LcysMNP) were used as sorbent material in the magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) in the same flask in which the mercury vapor generation step was performed using a handmade gas-liquid separator developed in our laboratory. The main conditions for extraction, pre-concentration, and cold vapor generation of mercury were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, detection and quantification limits of 0.04 and 0.12 μg L-1, respectively, were achieved with a relative standard deviation of 7.5%. The single-vial system allowed for a preconcentration factor of 30 and an enrichment factor of 24. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by applying it to certified reference materials, and the obtained values were not significantly different from the expected values according to the Student's t-test. Verification of non-specific interferences was assessed by recovery tests, resulting in recoveries ranging from 81 to 111% for water samples of different salinities.

The Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions by Poly (Amidoamine) Dendrimer-Functionalized Nanomaterials: A Review

Rapid industrialization has resulted in serious heavy metal pollution. The removal of heavy metal ions from solutions is very important for environmental safety and human health. Poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers are artificial macromolecular materials with unique physical and chemical properties. Abundant amide bonds and amino functional groups provide them with a high affinity for heavy metal ions. Herein, PAMAM-functionalized adsorbents are reviewed in terms of different nanomaterial substrates. Approaches in which PAMAM is grafted onto the surfaces of substrates are described in detail. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of these adsorbents are also discussed. The effects of PAMAM generation, pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, thermodynamics, and ionic strength on adsorption performance are summarized. Adsorption mechanisms and the further functionalization of PAMAM-grafted adsorbents are reviewed. In addition to the positive results, existing problems are also put forward in order to provide a reference for the optimization of PAMAM-grafted adsorbents of heavy metal ions.

Direct Synthesis of Sulfur-Decorating PAMAM Dendrimer/Mesoporous Silica for Enhanced Hg(II) and Cd(II) Adsorption

Water security caused by heavy metals poses a deleterious hazard to public health and the ecological system. The construction of adsorbents by polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers for efficient removal of metal ions has attracted considerable interest. However, the general method for the fabrication of these adsorbents was achieved by the surface chemical modification of the substrates with PAMAM dendrimer, which usually causes the defects of low density and uneven distribution of the dendrimer, the blocking of pores, and reducing the adsorption performance. Hence, the development of a new method for preparation of PAMAM dendrimer-based adsorbent to realize the efficient and enhanced adsorption of metal ions is still a challenge. Herein, methylisothiocyanate decorated PAMAM dendrimer/mesoporous silica composites (G0-S-1/x, G1.0-S-1/x, G2.0-S-1/x, x = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) were synthesized by the direct sol-gel reaction of alkoxysilyl-containing functional PAMAM dendrimer. The adsorbents display enhanced adsorption property for Hg(II) and Cd(II) as compared with the same adsorbents which were prepared by traditional chemical modification method. Take G2.0-S-1/2 as an example, the maximum adsorption capacities are 2.41 and 0.87 mmol·g^-1 for Hg(II) and Cd(II), respectively . Moreover, the adsorbents show excellent selective adsorption and regeneration property. G2.0-S-1/2 displays distinct selectivity for Hg(II) with the presence of Co(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II). The regeneration percentage still maintains 95.2% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption mechanism is also certified by the experimental method and theoretical calculation.
