Abstract
In this contribution, four derivatives of 5'-(para-R-Phenylene) vinyl-2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl) benzoxazole (PVHBO) were ingeniously designed by introducing two electron-withdrawing substituents and two electron-donating substituents, aiming to investigate the influence of different substituents on the photophysical properties of PVHBO and the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process via the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods. By utilizing the geometric parameters and the simulated infrared (IR) spectra, we compared the intramolecular hydrogen bonds (IHBs) strengths in the S0 and S1 states of the molecules. Via conducting the hole-electron analysis, the reduction in fluorescence intensity for the enol and keto forms of PVHBO, PVHBO-MeO, and PVHBO-NH2 were also well explicated. Besides, the potential energy curves (PECs) and corresponding transition state (TS) structures for both S0 and S1 states were also constructed to accurately obtain energy barriers of forward and reversed proton transfer processes. The calculated absorption and fluorescence spectra also show that PVHBO-NH2 has the largest Stokes shifts of 158 nm and 219 nm in both the enol and keto states, with a significant increase in fluorescence intensity observed upon the induction of electron-withdrawing groups. Through this work, it can provide the theoretical basis for the design of novel luminescent materials.

Abstract
This work investigates the different charge transfer characteristics and excited state intramolecular proton transfer process (ESIPT) of 2'-aminochalcones derivatives carrying different electron-withdrawing groups. Four new molecules are designed in the experiment and named as 2c, 3c, 4c and 5c, respectively. (Dyes and Pigments, 2022, 202.) Based on these four molecules, the effect of substituents on the ESIPT process and the charge transfer process are discussed in detail in our work. According to the study of the related parameters at the hydrogen bond site, infrared vibration spectrum, interaction region indicator isosurface (IRI) and scatter plots, it is concluded that the hydrogen bond interaction is enhanced under photoexcitation, and the descending order of the excited state hydrogen bond strength is 3c > 5c > 4c > 2c. The hydrogen bond energy is calculated by atoms in moleculs (AIM) topological analysis and core-valence bifurcation (CVB) index. The potential energy curve reveals the ESIPT mechanism. Frontier molecular orbital and electron-hole analyses explain the reasons for the changes in the ESIPT process at the electronic level. In addition, the ionization potentials (IPa and IPv), affinity energies (EAa and EAv) and reorganization energies are calculated to evaluate the potential application value of organic molecules in material transport field.

Abstract
Excited state aromaticity (ESA) offers a fascinating route for driving photophysical and photochemical processes but is challenging to harness fully due to its inherent association with unstable antiaromatic ground states. Here, we propose to circumvent this problem via the introduction of a new class of photophysical processes, the generation of ESA via an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer. We select twelve candidate molecules based on the cyclobutadiene and pentalene scaffolds and investigate their ground and excited state properties using computation. The study highlights the feasibility of proton transfer induced ESA gain and shows that it gives rise to pronounced excited-state relaxation producing Stokes shifts in excess of 2 eV. The underlying electronic structure properties are analysed in terms of the orbitals involved as well as aromaticity descriptors illustrating the pronounced changes these molecules undergo upon both excitation and proton transfer. In summary, we believe that the present work will pave the way toward a new class of chromophores with maximal Stokes shifts and excited-state relaxation.

Abstract
In this report, we propose a new insight into the interaction between the solvent-polarity-dependent conformational equilibrium and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behavior of Pz3HC system in four different polar solvents (polarity order: ACN > THF > TOL > CYC). Using quantum chemistry method, we first announce a coexistence mechanism between Pz3HC-1 and Pz3HC-3 in the ground state in four solvents based on the Boltzmann distribution. In particular, Pz3HC-1 is the principal configuration in non-polar solvent, but Pz3HC-3 is the principal configuration in polar solvent. In addition, the simulated fluorescence spectra interprets the negative solvatochromism effect of Pz3HC-1 and Pz3HC-3 in four solvents. The evidence from intramolecular hydrogen bonding (IHB) parameters and electronic perspective collectively confirms the light-induced IHB enhancement and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) properties in Pz3HC-1 and Pz3HC-3, which raises the likelihood of the ESIPT process. Combining the calculation of potential energy curve (PEC) and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC), we demonstrate that the ESIPT ease of Pz3HC-1 in different polar solvents obeys the order of CYC > TOL > THF > ACN, while the order of ESIPT ease in Pz3HC-3 is opposite. Notably, the ESIPT process of Pz3HC-3 in CYC solvent is accompanied by the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process. In addition, we also reveal that the enol* and keto* fluorescence peaks of Pz3HC-3 in CYC solvent are quenched by ISC and TICT process, respectively. Our work not only provides a satisfactory explanation of the novel dynamics mechanism for Pz3HC system, but also brings light to the design and application of new sensing molecules in the future.

Abstract
In the present work, four probe molecules for detecting hydrazine have been designed based on the 2-(4-Acetoxy-3-benzothiazole-2-yl-phenyl)-4-methyl-thiazole- 5-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (HP1) to investigate the influence of the amino and cyano groups on the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behavior and photophysical properties. The changes in hydrogen bond strength indicate that the intramolecular hydrogen bond of all probe products is enhanced upon photoexcitation. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and natural bond orbital (NBO) reveal the driving force of ESIPT. In addition, the potential energy curves and transition state theory explain the reason for the single fluorescence phenomenon in the experiment. The simulated absorption and fluorescence spectra of HP1 and its product (HPP1) are completely consistent with the experimental results, which also verify the viewpoint. Meanwhile the cyano derivative HPP4 exhibits a larger Stokes-shift (201 nm) than that of HPP1 (145 nm) and has the same low energy barrier as HPP1. These excellent properties allow HPP4 to be a fluorescent probe with superior performance than the original molecule. In conclusion, this work can provide a theoretical basis for the design and synthesis of more sensitive fluorescent probes for the detection of hydrazine.

Abstract
Over the past decade, fluorophores that exhibit "mega" Stokes shifts, defined to be Stokes shifts of greater than 100 nm, have gained considerable attention due to their potential technological applications. A subset of these fluorophores have Stokes shifts of at least 10,000 cm-1, for whom we suggest the moniker "giga" Stokes shift. The majority of "giga" Stokes shifts reported in the literature arise from the twisted intramolecular charge transfer mechanism, but this mechanism does not fit empirical characterization of triazolopyridinium (TOP). This observation inspired a density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT study of TOP, and several related fluorophores, to elucidate the novel photophysical origin for the "giga" Stokes shift of TOP. The resulting computational models revealed that photoexcitation of TOP yields a zwitterionic excited state that undergoes significant structural relaxation prior to emission. Most notably, TOP has two orthogonal moieties in the ground state that adopt a coplanar geometry in the excited state. According to Hückel's rule, both the heterocycle and phenyl moieties of TOP should be aromatic in an orthogonal ground state. However, according to Baird's rule, these individual moieties should be anti-aromatic in the excited state. By relaxing to a coplanar conformation in the excited state, TOP likely forms a single aromatic system consisting of both the heterocycle and phenyl moieties.

Abstract
In the present work, we have systematically investigated the dual hydrogen-bonded system 2Z,2'Z-3,3'-(4,4'-methylenebis(4,1-phenylene)bis(azanediyl)bis(1,3-diphenylprop-2-en-1-one)) (abbreviated as L) utilizing quantum chemistry methods, in which the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) does not conform to the usual stereotype but proceeds along the weakened intramolecular hydrogen bonds (IHBs). Two primary configurations were confirmed to coexist in the ground state (i.e., anti-L and syn-L) by calculating the Boltzmann distribution in three different solvents. Based on the cardinal geometrical parameters involved in IHBs and the interaction region indicator (IRI) isosurface, it can be revealed that the dual IHBs of L were both weakened upon photoexcitation, not least the N1-H2⋯O3 IHB was utterly destroyed in the excited state. The proton-transfer process of anti and syn in three solvents with different polarities has been analyzed by constructing S0- and S1-state potential energy surfaces (PESs). It can be concluded that only the single proton transfer behavior along N1-H2⋯O3 occurs in the S1 state, and the corresponding energy barrier is gradually enlarged with increasing solvent polarity. To further expound the weakened IHB-induced ESIPT mechanism, the scanned PESs connecting the transition state (TS) structures and the initial forms indicate that the ESIPT process is infeasible without the appropriate structural torsion. Our work not only unveils the extraordinary ESIPT process of L, but also complements the results obtained from previous experiments.

Abstract
Recently, a new fluorescent probe AE-Phoswas reported to detect the activity of alkaline phosphatases (ALP) in different living cell lines. Here, we present an in-depth computational analysis of the mechanism and source of the fluorescence of the AE-Phos probe. There is an intermediate product (AE-OH-Phos) in the experiment as well as a different configuration of products that may emit fluorescence. It is essential to investigate the origin of fluorescence and the detection mechanism of the probe, which could help us eliminate the interference of other substances (including an intermediate product and possible isomers) on fluorescence during the experiment. According to the change of geometric parameters and Infrared spectra, we deduce that the dual intramolecular hydrogen bonds of salicylaldehyde azine (SA) were enhanced at the excited state, while AE-OH-Phos was attenuated. Considering the complex ESIPT behavior of the dual proton-type probe, the potential energy surfaces were further discussed. It can be concluded that the single proton transfer structure of SA (SA-SPT) is the most stable form. Both the concerted double proton transfer process and stepwise single proton transfer process of SA were forbidden. The fluorescence for SA was 438 nm, while that of SA-SPT was 521 nm, which agrees with the experimentally measured fluorescence wavelength (536 nm). The conclusion that single proton transfer occurs in SA is once again verified. In addition, the distribution of electron-hole and relative index was analyzed to investigate the intrinsic mechanism for the fluorescence quenching of the probe and the intermediate product. The identification of the origin of fluorescence sheds light on the design and use of dual-proton type fluorescent probes in the future.
