Facile synthesis of ionic liquid modified silica nanoparticles for fast removal of anionic organic dyes with extremely high adsorption capacity

Modification of graphene oxide with imidazolium-based ionic liquid for significant sorption of La(III) and Pr(III) from aqueous solutions

A straightforward ferrocyanide immobilization on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) was conducted for rapid and efficient adsorption capacity for lanthanum and praseodymium from an aqueous solution. The GO was mixed with 1-methyl imidazole in the presence of epichlorohydrin to form GO-imidazole-Cl and thereafter suspended in a potassium ferrocyanide solution to fabricate GO-imidazole-FeCN. The prepared materials were characterized with different advanced techniques confirming the preparation method. The adsorption ability of GO-imidazole-FeCN towards La(III) and Pr(III) ions was evaluated. Moreover, the adsorption isotherm showed that the sorption process was fitted with the Langmuir isotherm model with a considerable maximum adsorption capacity of 781.25 mg g−1 for La(III) and 862.07 mg g−1 for Pr(III). The thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption of both metal ions was spontaneous and endothermic. In addition, the adsorbent showed excellent adsorption–desorption behavior over 5 times, suggesting that GO-imidazole-FeCN may be considered a potential candidate for La(III) and Pr(III) removal from different metal ions which present in fission products.

Methylene blue removal from aqueous solutions using a biochar/gellan gum hydrogel composite: Effect of agitation mode on sorption kinetics

Hydrogel membranes are prepared by casting a mixture of gellan gum (associated with PVA) and biochar produced from a local Egyptian plant. The mesoporous material is characterized by a specific surface area close to 134 m² g^-1, a residue of 28 % (at 800 °C), and a pH_PZC close to 6.43. After grinding, the material is tested for Methylene Blue sorption at pH 10.5: sorption capacity reaches 1.70 mmol MB g^-1 (synergistic effect of the precursors). The sorption isotherms are fitted by both Langmuir and Sips eqs. MB sorption increases with temperature: the sorption is endothermic (∆H°: 12.9 kJ mol^-1), with positive entropy (∆S°: 125 J mol^-1 K^-1). Uptake kinetics are controlled by agitation speed (optimum ≈200 rpm) and resistance to intraparticle diffusion. The profiles are strongly affected by the mode of agitation: the equilibrium time (≈180 min) is reduced to 20-30 min under sonication (especially at frequency: 80 kHz). The mode of agitation controls the best fitting equation: pseudo-first order rate agitation for mechanical agitation contrary to pseudo-second order rate under sonication. The sorption of MB is poorly affected by ionic strength (loss <6 % in 45 g L^-1 NaCl solution). Desorption (faster than sorption) is completely achieved using 0.7 M HCl solution. At the sixth recycling, the loss in sorption is close to 5 % (≈ decrease in desorption efficiency). The process is successfully applied for the treatment of MB-spiked industrial solution: the color index decreases by >97 % with a sorbent dose close to 1 g L^-1; a higher dose is required for maximum reduction of the COD (60 % at 3 g L^-1).

Design and Preparation of Imidazole Ionic Liquid-Based Magnetic Polymers and Its Adsorption on Sunset Yellow Dye

Magnetic polymers are often used as loading materials for ionic liquids because of their excellent magnetic separation properties. In this study, a novel imidazolium-based ionic liquid-modified magnetic polymer was synthesized by suspension polymerization and grafting, denoted as γ-Fe₂O₃@GMA@IM, and this magnetic polymer was used for the adsorption of the acid dye FCF. The magnetic polymer was characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, VSM and TGA. These techniques were used to reveal the overall physical properties of magnetic polymers, including the presence of morphology, functional groups, crystalline properties, magnetism and thermal stability. Studies have shown that γ-Fe₂O₃@GMA@IM can adsorb FCF in a wide pH range (2–10), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 445 mg/g. The adsorption data were more in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm. In order to investigate its reusability, this study used 10% NaCl as the desorption solution, and carried out five batches of adsorption–desorption cycles. After five cycles, the adsorption effect was maintained at 98.3%, which showed a good recycling performance.
