Solvatochromism, Preferential Solvation and Multiparametric Approach to the Spectral Shift of Methyl Orange in Aqueous Cosolvent Mixtures

In this study, the solvatochromic behavior of Methyl orange was studied visible spectrophotometrically in seven aqueous binary systems from water with methanol, ethanol, propanol, DMF, DMSO, acetone and dioxane solvents. The spectral data was interpreted in terms of solute-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions. The deviation from linearity in the plots of νmax versus x2 due to preferential solvation of the Methyl orange by one component of the mixed solvent and due to solvent microheterogeneity. The preferential solvation parameters local mole fraction X2L, solvation index δs2 and exchange constant K12 were evaluated. The preference of solute to be solvated by one of the solvating species relative to others was explained. All values of K12 were less than unity that indicates the preferential solvation of Methyl orange by water, except in case the water-propanol mixture where K12 was higher than unity. The preferential solvation index δs2 values were calculated and interpreted for each binary mixture. The magnitude of preferential solvation index was highest in water-DMSO mixtures than in the all other solvent mixtures. The energy of electronic transition in maximum absorption (ET) was calculated in each binary mixture. The extent and importance of each solute-solvent interactions to ET were analyzed by the linear solvation energy relationships using the Kamlet-Taft strategy.

Theoretical Investigation on the Substituent Effect of Halogen Atoms at the C8 Position of Adenine: Relative Stability, Vibrational Frequencies, and Raman Spectra of Tautomers

We have theoretically investigated the substituent effect of adenine at the C8 position with a substituent X = H, F, Cl, and Br by using the density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d, p) level. The aim is to study the substituent effect of halogen atoms on the relative stability, vibrational frequencies, and solvation effect of tautomers. Our calculated results show that for substituted adenine molecules the N9H8X tautomer to be the most stable structure in gas phase at the present theoretical level. Here N9H8X denotes the hydrogen atom binds to the N9 position of imidazole ring and X denotes H, F, Cl, and Br atoms. The influence of the induced attraction of the fluorine substituent is significantly larger than chlorine and bromine ones. The halogen substituent effect has a significant influence on changes of vibrational frequencies and Raman intensities.

Surface molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor for phenol based on SiO2 nanoparticles

A novel surface molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor for the recognition and detection of phenol was constructed. It has a specific recognition ability for phenol over other phenolic compounds for real samples with excellent repeatability.

Photophysical characterisation and photo-cycle dynamics of LOV1-His domain of phototropin from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii with roseoflavin monophosphate cofactor

The wild-type phototropin protein phot from the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii with the blue-light photoreceptor domains LOV1 and LOV2 has flavin mononucleotide (FMN) as cofactor. For the LOV1-His domain from phot of C. reinhardtii studied here, the FMN chromophore was replaced by roseoflavin monophosphate (8-dimethylamino-8-demethyl-FMN, RoFMN) during heterologous expression in a riboflavin auxotropic Escherichia coli strain. An absorption and emission spectroscopic characterisation of the cofactor exchanged-LOV1-His (RoLOV1) domain was carried out in aqueous pH 8 phosphate buffer. The fluorescence of RoLOV1 is quenched by photo-induced charge transfer at room temperature. The photo-cyclic dynamics of RoLOV1 was observed by blue-light induced hypochromic and bathochromic absorption changes which recover on a minute timescale in the dark. Photo-excited RoFMN is thought to cause reversible protein and cofactor structural changes. Prolonged intense blue-light exposure caused photo-degradation of RoFMN in RoLOV1 to fully reduced flavin and lumichrome derivatives. Photo-cycle schemes of RoLOV1 and LOV1 are presented, and the photo-degradation dynamics of RoLOV1 is discussed.
