Abstract
This study reports the synthesis and biological investigation of three series of novel monocyclic β-lactam derivatives bearing a morpholine ring substituent on the nitrogen. The resulting β-lactam adducts were synthesized via Staudinger's [2 + 2]-ketene-imine cycloaddition reaction. New synthesized products were fully characterized by spectral data and elemental analyses, and then evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity toward human inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cytotoxicity toward HepG2 cell line. The compounds 3e, 3h, 3k, 5c, 5f, 6c, 6d and 6f showed higher activity with anti-inflammatory ratio values of 38, 62, 51, 72, 51, 35, 55 and 99, respectively, in comparison to the reference compound dexamethasone having an anti-inflammatory ratio value of 32. Hence, these compounds can be considered as potent iNOS inhibitors. They also exhibited IC50 values of 0.48 ± 0.04 mM, 0.51 ± 0.01 mM, 0.22 ± 0.02 mM, 0.12 ± 0.00 mM, 0.25 ± 0.05 mM, 0.82 ± 0.07 mM, 0.44 ± 0.04 mM and 0.60 ± 0.04 mM, respectively, in comparison with doxorubicin (IC50 < 0.01 mM) against HepG2 cells, biocompatibility and nontoxic behavior. In silico prediction of drug-likeness characteristic indicated that the compounds are compliant with the Lipinski and Veber rules. Molecular docking experiments showed a good correlation between the experimental activity and the calculated binding affinity to human inducible nitric oxide synthase, the enzymatic target for the anti-inflammatory response.

Abstract
A novel and efficient methodology concerning the Pd(ii)-catalyzed intermolecular difunctionalization of conjugated dienes is reported to synthesize a series of functionalized morpholines and 2-morpholones. Widely distributed and easily obtained β-amino alcohols and α-amino acids, as starting nitrogen and oxygen sources, are successfully applied in the difunctionalization of conjugated dienes respectively. The majority of the desired products were obtained in moderate to excellent yields. Oxygen was successfully employed as a terminal oxidant. Further transformation of the generated products allowed for the expansion of structural diversity.

Abstract
A series of novel 4-benzyl-morpholine-2-carboxylic acid N'-[2-(4-benzoyl-phenoxy)-acetyl]-hydrazide derivatives 8a-j has been synthesized from (4-hydroxy-aryl)-aryl methanones through a multi-step reaction sequence and then evaluated for anti-proliferative activity in vitro against various types of neoplastic cells of mouse and human such as DLA, EAC, MCF-7 and A549 cells. From the cytotoxic studies and structural activity relationship of compounds 8a-j, it is clear that methyl group on the B ring of benzophenone is essential for antiproliferative activity and bromo at ortho position (compound 8b) and methyl at para position (compound 8f) on A ring of benzophenone are significant for extensive anti-mitogenic activity. Investigation on clonogenesis and Fluorescence-activated cell sorting suggests that compounds 8b and 8f have the potency to exhibit the prolonged activity with cell cycle arrest on G2/M phase against cancer progression. Further, the compounds 8b and 8f inhibit murine ascites lymphoma through caspase activated DNase mediated apoptosis.

Abstract
MOTIVATION With the rapid increase of infection resistance to antibiotics, it is urgent to find novel infection therapeutics. In recent years, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been utilized as potential alternatives for infection therapeutics. AMPs are key components of the innate immune system and can protect the host from various pathogenic bacteria. Identifying AMPs and their functional types has led to many studies, and various predictors using machine learning have been developed. However, there is room for improvement; in particular, no predictor takes into account the lack of balance among different functional AMPs. RESULTS In this paper, a new synthetic minority over-sampling technique on imbalanced and multi-label datasets, referred to as ML-SMOTE, was designed for processing and identifying AMPs' functional families. A novel multi-label classifier, MLAMP, was also developed using ML-SMOTE and grey pseudo amino acid composition. The classifier obtained 0.4846 subset accuracy and 0.16 hamming loss. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION A user-friendly web-server for MLAMP was established at http://www.jci-bioinfo.cn/MLAMP CONTACTS: linweizhong@jci.edu.cn or xudong@missouri.edu.

Abstract
Among the large family of cyclodepsipeptides, the simplest members are the cyclodidepsipeptides which have an ester group and an amide group in the same six-membered ring. To point out the pharmacological potential of this class of compounds, the present article reviews structure, isolation, synthesis and biological properties of the known cyclodidepsipeptides. Synthesis of cyclodidepsipeptides is achieved by two general approaches--by initial formation of the amide bond, or initial formation of the ester bond; and subsequent intermolecular cyclization to cyclodidepsipeptide structure. It is closely related to the condensation and ring-closure strategies applied in the preparation of the larger members of the cyclodepsipeptide family. However, due to synthesis of the smaller heretocycles it allows for the use of more versatile building blocks. There are data on antimicrobial, antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities of cyclodidepsipeptides as well as their inhibitory activities toward α-glucosidase, acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase, xanthine oxidase and platelet aggregation. Because we have recently found that two 6-(propan-2-yl)-4-methyl-morpholine-2,5-diones, as novel non-purine xanthine oxidase inhibitors, may give promise to be used in the treatment of gout, in this review we have included a study of molecular interactions of the selected cyclodidepsipeptides with xanthine oxidase using idTarget web server. Cyclodidepsipeptides showed promising pharmacological activities and meet all criteria for good solubility and permeability. However, further research of their medical application is necessary. In addition to this, the diversity of natural cyclodidepsipeptides, simplicity for synthesis and convenience for rational drug design indicate the cyclodidepsipeptide as promising scaffold in medicinal chemistry.

Abstract
Ni(II) complexes with N-2-fluorobenzoylpiperidine-1-carbothioimidate (L2-), N-4-fluorobenzoylpiperidine-1-carbothioimidate (L3-), N-2-fluorobenzoylmorpholine- 1-carbothioimidate (L5-) and N-4-fluorobenzoylmorpholine-1-carbothioimidate (L6-) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR and 1H-NMR. The crystal structures of three ligands (HL2, HL3 and HL6) and the corresponding Ni(II) complexes ([Ni(L2)2], [Ni(L3)2] and [Ni(L6)2]) have been determined by X-ray diffraction. The antifungal activities of the Ni(II) complexes together and the corresponding ligands against the fungi Botrytis cinerea, Trichoderma spp., Myrothecium and Verticillium spp. have been investigated. The experimental results showed that the ligands and their complexes have antifungal abilities. When the fluorine was substituted on the para-benzoyl moiety, the antifungal activity of the ligands was obviously increased. Moreover, the ligands were stronger than their complexes in inhibiting fungal activities. The antifungal ability of HL6 is especially strong, and similar to that of the commercial fungicide fluconazole.
