EPR studies of radicals generated by γ-radiation in nanocrystalline hydroxyapatites prepared by dry milling

Influence of the Metal Incorporation into Hydroxyapatites on the Deactivation Behavior of the Solids in the Esterification of Glycerol

The effects of the metal incorporation into hydroxyapatites on the deactivation behavior of the solids were examined in the esterification of glycerol (EG) reaction. The introduction of Cu, Co, or Ni ions by ion exchange in calcium-deficient hydroxyapatites resulted in active catalysts for the EG reaction. The metal contents were varied from 2.0 to 17.0%, providing better performances at rather high metal contents. Part of metal species existed in the hydroxyapatite lattice structure and also as isolated Cu2+, Ni2+, and Co2+ entities on the surface, as shown by XPS and EPR. The effects of the reaction temperature, reaction time, and glycerol to acetic acid molar ratios were deeply investigated. The spent solids used in this study were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, chemical analyses, EPR, and XPS. The Cu2+–OH acid pairs could promote a superior catalytic performance of Cu-containing hydroxyapatites due to the resistance of these solids against leaching of the active species, which is even better than those of Co and Ni-containing counterparts with high metal contents. Cu into hydroxyapatite had a good reusability and long-term utilization for five consecutive cycles of 24 h under a glycerol to acetic acid molar ratio of 0.25 at 80 °C, and longer reaction times provide triacetin formation. This was due to the fact that Cu was stabilized by interacting with Ca, PO4, and OH sites into the hydroxyapatite lattice, being highly active for the EG reaction. The results also revealed that isolated Cu2+ sites played an important role in enhancing the glycerol conversion, intrinsically due to the Cu-containing hydroxyapatites ability to avoid strong adsorption of glycerol oligomers on the catalytic sites.

Study of new practical ESR dosimeter based on carbonated hydroxyapatite and its dosimetric properties

The development of new dosimeters with good dosimetric properties is important for quality control in radiation applications. A new practical electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimeter based on carbonated hydroxyapatite that simulated the composition and structure of tooth enamel was specially synthesized. The synthesized material was investigated by transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy to confirm to the main composition of carbonated hydroxyapatite with CO32- successfully doped into the crystal lattice through optimizing the synthesis process of C/P molar ratio, pH value dynamical adjustment, annealing temperature and time. The dosimetric properties were systematically investigated by ESR spectroscopy. The results indicated that the radiation induced signal had a good dose response within a relatively wide dose range. The dose response was linear in the dose range of 0-400 Gy with a correlation coefficient of 0.9999 and had dose accumulative effect in the experimental dose range of 0-100 Gy. In a wider dose range up to 30 kGy, the dose response also presented linear feature in double-logarithmic coordinate system with a correlation coefficient of 0.9970. The dose detection limit was about 0.34Gy with a given probability of 95% confidence level depending upon a rigid calculation algorithm. The signal was extremely stable in the observation time of 360 days with a variation coefficient of 3.8%. The radiation sensitivity of the material showed no remarkable variation against photon energy from 662 KeV to 1.25 MeV and dose rate from 0.86 Gy/min to 12.17 Gy/min. The material showed more sensitive in lower photon energy range below 662 keV, which hint additional calibration may need when using in special photon energy condition. The preliminary results suggested that this newly developed dosimeter was potential to become a practical dosimeter that would expand the application fields of ESR dosimetry.

Solid-state MAS NMR, TEM, and TGA studies of structural hydroxyl groups and water in nanocrystalline apatites prepared by dry milling

A series of nanocrystalline calcium hydroxyapatites was prepared by dry milling and characterized using proton and ³¹P MAS NMR, TEM, and TGA methods. The samples contained stubby rod-shaped crystals, which length and width varied in the 130-30 and 95-20 nm ranges, respectively. It was confirmed that concentration of structural hydroxyl groups in nanocrystalline apatites decreases with the decreasing crystal size. In the series of the studied apatites, the decrease was from 86 to ca. 50 % in reference to stoichiometric apatite. Water was found in the surface hydrated layer and in the c-axis channels, in which compartments existed as adsorbed and structural, respectively. Molecules of the adsorbed water were capable of moving from the crystal surface into the lattice c-axis channels of apatite. This process introduced considerable structural disorder within and around those channels and reduced the content of the structural hydroxyl groups, particularly in the region underneath the apatite crystal surface.
