Abstract
Cruciferous vegetables are rich in glucosinolates, which can be metabolized to produce the antitumor compound indole-3-carbinol (I3C). The conventional solvent extraction method for I3C is inefficient. To improve the extraction efficiency of I3C from cruciferous vegetables, we prepared a metal-organic framework (MOF) material (Fe3O4@Zn-Al-LDH@B-D-MIL-100). First, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were introduced to layered double hydroxides by in situ polymerization. Then, the MOF material was grown on the surface of the layered double hydroxide by co-precipitation and the layer-by-layer self-assembly method. This gave Fe3O4@Zn-Al-LDH@B-D-MIL-100, which was characterized using a variety of techniques. The results showed that Fe3O4@Zn-Al-LDH@B-D-MIL-100 had a double-layer porous structure, excellent superparamagnetism (11.54955 emu/g), a large specific surface area (174.04 m2/g), and a pore volume (0.26 cm3/g). The extraction conditions for I3C were optimized. Non-linear fitting of the static adsorption model showed that the adsorption was mainly monolayer. Fe3O4@Zn-Al-LDH@B-D-MIL-100 had fast adsorption kinetics and could extract 95% of I3C in 45 min. It is superior to the traditional solvent extraction method because of its high enrichment efficiency in a short time and environmental friendliness. The successful preparation of the new nanomaterial will provide a new reference for the enrichment and extraction of the I3C industry.

Abstract
This article presents the results of the 10-fold cyclic freezing (−37.0 °C) and thawing (0.0 °C) effect on the number and size range of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). AgNPs were obtained by the cavitation-diffusion photochemical reduction method and their sorption on the fiber surface of various suture materials, perlon, silk, and catgut, was studied. The distribution of nanoparticles of different diameters before and after the application of the cyclic freezing/thawing processes for each type of fibers studied was determined using electron microscopy. In general, the present study demonstrates the effectiveness of using the technique of 10-fold cyclic freezing. It is applicable to increase the absolute amount of AgNPs on the surface of the suture material with a simultaneous decrease in the size dispersion. It was also found that the application of the developed technique leads to the overwhelming predominance of nanoparticles with 1 to 15 nm diameter on all the investigated fibers. In addition, it was shown that after the application of the freeze/thaw method, the antibacterial activity of silk and catgut suture materials with AgNPs was significantly higher than before their treatment by cyclic freezing.

Abstract
Oxidative stress and inflammation act on skin squamous cell carcinoma (SSCC) development and progression. Curative therapy for SSCC patients is mainly based on surgical resection, which can cause various sequelae. Silver ions have in vitro activities over tumor cells, while nimesulide has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a silver(I) complex with nimesulide (AgNMS) incorporated in a sustained release device based on bacterial cellulose membrane, named AgNMS@BCM, on topic SSCC treatment. The antiproliferative effect of AgNMS complex was evaluated in the SCC4, SCC15 and FaDu SCC lines. AgNMS complex activity on exposure of phosphatidylserine (PS) residues and multicaspase activation were evaluated on FaDu cells by flow cytometry. The AgNMS@BCM effects were evaluated in a SSCC model induced by 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene/12-o-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate (DMBA/TPA) in mice. Toxicity and tumor size were evaluated throughout the study. AgNMS complex showed antiproliferative activity in SCC15 and FaDu lines in low to moderate concentrations (67.3 µM and 107.3 µM, respectively), and induced multicaspase activation on FaDu cells. The AgNMS@BCM did not induce toxicity and reduced tumor size up to 100%. Thus, the application of AgNMS@BCM was effective and safe in SSCC treatment in mice, and can be seen as a potential and safe agent for topic treatment of SSCC in humans.

Abstract
In this study, a novel copper nanozyme (CNZ) was synthesized by a mild way and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The as-fabricated CNZ exhibited typical peroxidase activity toward 2, 2'-azinodi-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline)-6-sulfonate. We successfully applied CNZ for the degradation of methyl orange pollutants. Under the optimum conditions (pH, 3.0; T, 60 °C; H2O2 concentration, 200 mM; dosage of CNZ, 8 mg), 93% of the degradation rate could be obtained in less than 10 min. Furthermore, the nanozyme exhibited excellent reusability and storage stability. All these experimental results suggested that CNZ is a powerful catalyst for industrial wastewater treatment.

Abstract
The aims of this work were to evaluate the antibacterial and antiproliferative potential in vitro of the metal complex with 4-aminobenzoic acid (Ag-pABA) and a drug delivery system based on bacterial cellulose (BC-Ag-pABA). The Ag-pABA complex was characterized by elemental analysis, high resolution mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques, which indicated a 1:2 metal/pABA composition plus a nitrate ion coordinated to silver by the oxygen atom, with the coordination formula [Ag (C7H7NO2)2(NO3)]. The coordination of pABA to the silver ion occurred by the nitrogen atom. The in vitro antibacterial activity of the complex evaluated by minimum inhibitory concentration assays demonstrated the effective growth inhibitory activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative biofilm producers and acid-alcohol resistant Bacillus. The antiproliferative activities against a panel of eight tumor cells demonstrated the activity of the complex with a significant selectivity index (SI). The DNA interaction capacity and the Ames Test indicated the absence of mutagenicity. The BC-Ag-pABA composite showed an effective capacity of sustained release of Ag-pABA. The observed results validate further studies on its mechanisms of action and the conditions that mediate the in vivo biological effects using animal models to confirm its safety and effectiveness for treatment of skin and soft tissues infected by bacterial pathogens, urinary tract infections and cancer.

Abstract
Multifunctional biocompatible nanomaterials containing both fluorescent and vehicle functions are highly favored in bioimaging, therapeutic, and drug delivery applications. Nevertheless, the rational design and synthesis of highly biocompatible multifunctional materials remain challenging. We present here the development of novel protein-gold hybrid nanocubes (PGHNs), which were assembled using gold nanoclusters, bovine serum albumin, and tryptophan as building blocks. The green-synthesized PGHNs in this study are blue-emitting under UV exposure and cube-shaped with a size of approximately 100 nm. These hybrid nanomaterials are highly biocompatible as shown by cytotoxicity experiments and can be readily internalized by different types of cells. Moreover, PGHNs can act as nanovehicles that successfully deliver dyes or drugs into the cells. The protein-metal hybrid nanocubes can serve as a new type of dual-purpose tool: a blue-emitting cell marker in bioimaging investigation and a nanocarrier in drug delivery studies.

Abstract
A new platinum(II) complex with the amino acid L-tryptophan (trp), named Pt-trp, was synthesized and characterized. Elemental, thermogravimetric and ESI-QTOF mass spectrometric analyses led to the composition [Pt(C11H11N2O2)2]⋅6H2O. Infrared spectroscopic data indicate the coordination of trp to Pt(II) through the oxygen of the carboxylate group and also through the nitrogen atom of the amino group. The (13)C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopic data confirm coordination through the oxygen atom of the carboxylate group, while the (15)N CP/MAS NMR data confirm coordination of the nitrogen of the NH2 group to the metal. Density functional theory (DFT) studies were applied to evaluate the cis and trans coordination modes of trp to platinum(II). The trans isomer was shown to be energetically more stable than the cis one. The Pt-trp complex was evaluated as a cytotoxic agent against SK-Mel 103 (human melanoma) and Panc-1 (human pancreatic carcinoma) cell lines. The complex was shown to be cytotoxic over the considered cells.

Abstract
Silver is proving to have a number of medicinal applications; as an antiseptic, an antibacterial, and an anti-inflammatory, while any biological role for it is currently unknown. Silver compounds and their therapeutic potentials are under consideration from many research groups, while a number of early reviews recording the advances of silver(I) chemistry are also available. However there is no recent report on the screening for the antitumor potential of silver(I) compounds. This review focuses upon results obtained on the anti-proliferative activity of silver compounds in the past years. This survey shows that silver(I) complexes containing various type of ligands such as carboxylic acids, amino acids, nitrogen, phosphorus or sulfur donor ligands, exhibit selectivity against a variety of cancer cells. The role of the coordination number, which is related to either the stability or hydrophilicity-lipophilicity of a complex, is not clearly elucidated within this review.

Abstract
Heteronuclear complexes of the type [AgAu(PPh3)2(xspa)] [H2xspa=3-(aryl)-2-sulfanylpropenoic acids; (x=3-phenyl-; 3-(2-chlorophenyl)-; 3-(o-methoxyphenyl)-; 3-(p-methoxyphenyl)-; 3-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-; 3-(2-furyl)-; 3-(2-thienyl)-; spa=2-sulfanylpropenoate)] were prepared by reacting the appropriate [Au(PPh3)(Hxspa)] precursor with Ag(PPh3)NO3. The compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods, (IR; (1)H, (13)C and (31)P NMR) and mass spectrometry and the structures of the phenyl and p-methoxyphenyl derivatives were determined by X-ray diffraction. The in vitro antitumor activity against the HeLa-229, A2780 and A2780cis cell lines was determined and compared with that of cisplatin and the equivalent homonuclear gold(I) complexes.
