Abstract
The incorporation of charged groups proximal to a redox active transition metal center can impact the local electric field, altering redox behavior and enhancing catalysis. Vanadyl salen (salen = N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneaminato)) complexes functionalized with a crown ether containing a nonredox active metal cation (V-Na, V-K, V-Ba, V-La, V-Ce, and V-Nd) were synthesized. The electrochemical behavior of this series of complexes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry in solvents with varying polarity and dielectric constant (ε) (acetonitrile, ε = 37.5; N,N-dimethylformamide, ε = 36.7; and dichloromethane, ε = 8.93). The vanadium(V/IV) reduction potential shifted anodically with increasing cation charge compared to a complex lacking a proximal cation (ΔE1/2 > 900 mV in acetonitrile and >700 mV in dichloromethane). In contrast, the reduction potential for all vanadyl salen-crown complexes measured in N,N-dimethylformamide was insensitive to the magnitude of the cationic charge, regardless of the electrolyte or counteranion used. Titration studies of N,N-dimethylformamide into acetonitrile resulted in cathodic shifting of the vanadium(V/IV) reduction potential with increasing concentration of N,N-dimethylformamide. Binding constants of N,N-dimethylformamide (log(KDMF)) for the series of crown complexes show increased binding affinity in the order of V-La > V-Ba > V-K > (salen)V(O), indicating an enhancement of Lewis acid/base interaction with increasing cationic charge. The redox behavior of (salen)V(O) and (salen-OMe)V(O) (salen-OMe = N,N'-ethylenebis(3-methoxysalicylideneamine) was also investigated and compared to the crown-containing complexes. For (salen-OMe)V(O), a weak association of triflate salt at the vanadium(IV) oxidation state was observed through cyclic voltammetry titration experiments, and cation dissociation upon oxidation to vanadium(V) was identified. These studies demonstrate the noninnocent role of solvent coordination and cation/anion effects on redox behavior and, by extension, the local electric field.

Vanadium(IV) Complexes with Methyl-Substituted 8-Hydroxyquinolines: Catalytic Potential in the Oxidation of Hydrocarbons and Alcohols with Peroxides and Biological Activity. Molecules 2021; 26:molecules26216364. Abstract
Methyl-substituted 8-hydroxyquinolines (Hquin) were successfully used to synthetize five-coordinated oxovanadium(IV) complexes: [VO(2,6-(Me)2-quin)2] (1), [VO(2,5-(Me)2-quin)2] (2) and [VO(2-Me-quin)2] (3). Complexes 1-3 demonstrated high catalytic activity in the oxidation of hydrocarbons with H2O2 in acetonitrile at 50 °C, in the presence of 2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid (PCA) as a cocatalyst. The maximum yield of cyclohexane oxidation products attained was 48%, which is high in the case of the oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons. The reaction leads to the formation of a mixture of cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone. When triphenylphosphine is added, cyclohexyl hydroperoxide is completely converted to cyclohexanol. Consideration of the regio- and bond-selectivity in the oxidation of n-heptane and methylcyclohexane, respectively, indicates that the oxidation proceeds with the participation of free hydroxyl radicals. The complexes show moderate activity in the oxidation of alcohols. Complexes 1 and 2 reduce the viability of colorectal (HCT116) and ovarian (A2780) carcinoma cell lines and of normal dermal fibroblasts without showing a specific selectivity for cancer cell lines. Complex 3 on the other hand, shows a higher cytotoxicity in a colorectal carcinoma cell line (HCT116), a lower cytotoxicity towards normal dermal fibroblasts and no effect in an ovarian carcinoma cell line (order of magnitude HCT116 > fibroblasts > A2780).

Abstract
The reaction of potentially N,N,O-tridentate Schiff base ligands, Cl-LH, Br-LH, BrCl-LH and H-LH, with [VIVO(acac)2] in 2:1 ratio in methanol gave the corresponding mononuclear and dinuclear oxidovanadium(IV) complexes, VO(Cl-L)2 (1), VO(Br-L)2 (2), [(BrCl-L)2(H2O)V(μ-O)VO(BrCl-L)2] (3) and [(H-L)2(H2O)V(μ -O)VO(H-L)2] (4), in good yields. The ligands and complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy. The ligands were also characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The oxidation state of V(IV)O with d1 configuration in all synthesized complexes was confirmed by EPR. Moreover, the structures of 2 and 3 were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis which revealed them as mono- and dinuclear vanadium(IV) complexes, respectively, with the ligands coordinated as bidentate chelates. The structure of 3 represents the first example of dinuclear V(IV) complex with O → VIV = O → VIV = O core (Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), version 5.42, update of May 2021). The cytotoxicity of ligands and complexes was evaluated towards ovarian (A2780), breast (MCF7) and prostate (PC3) cancer cells at 48 h. While ligands showed modest IC50 values (>42 μM), all complexes turned out to be effective in the range 3.9-17.2 μM. In particular, A2780 and MCF7 cell lines were the most sensitive to the newly synthesized V(IV)O complexes.

Abstract
Reactions of [VCl3(thf)3] or VBr3 with 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) in a 1:1 molar ratio in air under solventothermal conditions has afforded polymeric oxidovanadium(IV) four complexes 1–4 of a general formula [VO(L)X2]n (L = bpy, phen and X = Cl, Br). Monomeric complex [VO(DMF)(phen)Br2] (4a) has been obtained by the treatment of compound 4 with DMF. The complexes were characterized by IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The crystal structures of 3 and 4a were determined by an X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The {VOBr2(bpy)} fragments in 3 form infinite chains due to the V = O…V interactions. The vanadium atom has a distorted octahedral coordination environment. Complexes 1–4 have been tested as catalysts in the homogeneous oxidation of alkanes (to produce corresponding alkyl hydroperoxides which can be easily reduced to alcohols by PPh3) and alcohols (to corresponding ketones) with H2O2 or tert-butyl hydroperoxide in MeCN. Compound 1 exhibited the highest activity. The mechanism of alkane oxidation was established using experimental selectivity and kinetic data and theoretical DFT calculations. The mechanism is of the Fenton type involving the generation of HO• radicals.
