Solvothermal synthesis, structure and properties of heterometallic coordination polymer based on metalloligand and alkaline-earth metal calcium

Biobased hydrogels and their composite containing MgMOF74 for the removal of textile dyes and wastewater treatment

In this work, we report the synthesis of a biobased hydrogel comprised of collagen, chitosan, and polyurethane for the removal of textile dyes. The adsorption capacity of this hydrogel was improved by adding a magnesium metal-organic framework to the semi-interpenetrating polymer matrix yielding a composite hydrogel. Removal of Bismarck Brown and Congo red was studied, and the experimental results fit Freundlich's model. Both hydrogel formulations were tested for the removal of textiles dyes from wastewaters. The magnesium-metal organic framework improved the efficiency of the biobased hydrogel for the removal of direct and mordant dyes reaching up to 89 ± 2%. The composite hydrogel was tested for the removal of Congo Red in a fixed bed column observing the breakthrough point after 168 min. Also, a flocculant material was prepared from collagen and chitosan and was tested for the removal of direct red dye from wastewater removing up to 80 ± 1%. The pretreated wastewater by coagulation-flocculation was treated by adsorption yielding a global removal efficiency of 99%. Finally, the studied hydrogels are potentially biodegradable being completely degraded by the proteolytic action after 22 days. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Composite hydrogels of collagen, chitosan, and MgMOF74 removed efficiently textile dyes from wastewater in batch systems and fixed bed columns. A biobased flocculant of collagen and chitosan significantly improved water quality after coagulation flocculation. Hydrogels were reusable for four cycles, and they can be proteolytically degraded after 22 days.

Calcium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Potential Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) built on calcium metal (Ca-MOFs) represent a unique subclass of MOFs featuring high stability, low toxicity, and relatively low density. Ca-MOFs show considerable potential for molecular separations, electronic, magnetic, and biomedical applications, although they are not investigated as extensively as transition metal-based MOFs. Compared to MOFs made of other groups of metals, Ca-MOFs may be particularly advantageous for certain applications such as adsorption and storage of light molecules because of their gravimetric benefit, and drug delivery due to their high biocompatibility. This review intends to provide an overview on the recent development of Ca-MOFs, including their synthesis, crystal structures, important properties, and related applications. Various synthetic methods and techniques, types of building blocks, structure and porosity features, selected physical properties, and potential uses will be discussed and summarized. Representative examples will be illustrated for each type of important applications with a focus on their structure-property relations.

Synthesis and crystal structure of (1,10-phenanthroline-κ2 N,N')[2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)phenyl-κ2 N 2,C 1]iridium(III) hexa-fluorido-phosphate with an unknown number of solvent mol-ecules

The cationic complex in the title compound, [Ir(C9H7N2)2(C12H8N2)]PF6, comprises two phenyl-pyrazole (ppz) cyclo-metallating ligands and one 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ancillary ligand. The asymmetric unit consists of one [Ir(ppz)2(phen)]+ cation and one [PF6]- counter-ion. The central IrIII ion is six-coordinated by two N atoms and two C atoms from the two ppz ligands as well as by two N atoms from the phen ligand within a distorted octa-hedral C2N4 coordination set. In the crystal structure, the [Ir(ppz)2(phen)]+ cations and PF6 - counter-ions are connected with each other through weak inter-molecular C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds. Additional C-H⋯π inter-actions between the rings of neighbouring cations consolidate the three-dimensional network. Electron density associated with additional disordered solvent mol-ecules inside cavities of the structure was removed with the SQUEEZE procedure in PLATON [Spek (2015 ▸). Acta Cryst. C71, 9-18]. The given chemical formula and other crystal data do not take into account the unknown solvent mol-ecule(s). The title compound has a different space-group symmetry (C2/c) from its solvatomorph (P21/c) comprising 1.5CH2Cl2 solvent mol-ecules per ion pair.

Synthesis and crystal structure of (1,8-naphth-yridine-κ2 N,N')[2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)phenyl-κ2 N 2,C 1]iridium(III) hexa-fluorido-phosphate di-chloro-methane monosolvate

The solvated title salt, [Ir(C9H7N2)2(C8H6N2)]PF6·CH2Cl2, was obtained from the reaction between 1,8-naphthyridine (NAP) and an orthometalated iridium(III) precursor containing a 1-phenyl-pyrazole (ppz) ligand. The asymmetric unit comprises one [Ir(ppz)2(NAP)]+ cation, one PF6 - counter-ion and one CH2Cl2 solvent mol-ecule. The central IrIII atom of the [Ir(ppz)2(NAP)]+ cation is distorted-octa-hedrally coordinated by four N atoms and two C atoms, whereby two N atoms stem from the NAP ligand while the ppz ligands ligate through one N and one C atom each. In the crystal, the [Ir(ppz)2(NAP)]+ cations and PF6 - counter-ions are connected with each other through weak inter-molecular C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds. Together with an additional C-H⋯F inter-action involving the solvent mol-ecule, a three-dimensional network structure is formed.
