Preparation, characterization and photocatalytic activity of novel 1,2,4-triazole based Cu(II) and Zn(II) phthalocyanines modified TiO2 nanoparticles

Synergistic Cytotoxicity of Nano-titanium Dioxide and Phthalocyanine on HepG2 Cells via Sonophotodynamic Therapy

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presents a significant therapeutic challenge, necessitating novel approaches beyond conventional treatments. This study investigates the combined cytotoxic effects of nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO₂), copper (II) phthalocyanine (CuPc), and copper (II) phthalocyanine-modified nano-TiO₂-(nano-TiO₂/Pc) on HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells using sonodynamic therapy (SDT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and sonophotodynamic therapy (SPDT). The results show that individual treatments with nano-TiO₂ or CuPc alone did not induce significant cytotoxicity. However, when combined with SDT or PDT, a noticeable decrease in cell viability was observed. Strikingly, SPDT combined with nano-TiO₂/Pc demonstrated the most significant cytotoxic effect, achieving up to 83.80% apoptosis in HepG2 cells. This was associated with a marked reduction in Bcl-2 protein levels and an increase in cleaved caspase-3, cleaved caspase-9, cytochrome-c (cyt-c), and Bax indicating the activation of both intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways. Furthermore, SPDT-nano-TiO₂/Pc significantly increased oxidative stress, as evidenced by decreased levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH), along with elevated levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). These findings suggest that phthalocyanine-mediated SPDT effectively enhances mitochondrial apoptosis and disrupts the tumor cytoplasmic membrane, highlighting the potential of combining SDT and PDT with nano-TiO₂/Pc as a promising strategy for cancer treatment.

Advances in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in wastewaters: harnessing the power of phthalocyanines and phthalocyanine-containing materials

Access to clean water is increasingly challenging worldwide due to human activities and climate change. Wastewater treatment and utilization offer a promising solution by reducing the reliance on pure underground water. However, it is crucial to develop efficient and sustainable methods for wastewater purification. Among the emerging wastewater treatment strategies, photocatalysis has gained significant attention for decomposing organic pollutants in water, especially when combined with sunlight and a recoverable photocatalyst. Heterogeneous photocatalysts have distinct advantages, as they can be recovered and reused without significant loss of activity over multiple cycles. Phthalocyanine dyes, with their exceptional photophysical properties, are particularly valuable for homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalysis. By immobilizing these photosensitizers in various supports, hybrid materials extend their light absorption into the visible spectrum, complementing most supports' limited UV light absorption. The novelty and research importance of this review stems from its discussion of the multifaceted approach to treating contaminated wastewater with phthalocyanines and materials containing phthalocyanines. It highlights key aspects of each study, including photocatalytic efficiency, recyclability characteristics, investigation of the generation of oxygen species responsible for degradation, identification of the major degradation byproducts for each pollutant, and others. Moreover, the review includes tables that illustrate and compare the various phthalocyanines and supporting materials employed in each study for pollutant degradation. Additionally, almost all photocatalysts mentioned in this review could degrade at least 5% of the pollutant, and more than 50 photocatalysts showed photocatalytic rates above 50%. When immobilized in some support, the synergistic effect of the phthalocyanine was visible in the photocatalytic rate of the studied pollutant. However, when performing these types of works, it is necessary to understand the degradation products of each pollutant and their relative toxicities. Along with this, recyclability and stability studies are also necessary. Despite the good results presented in this review, some of the works lack those studies. Moreover, none of the works mentions any study in wastewater.

Bismuth tungstate Bi2WO6: a review on structural, photophysical and photocatalytic properties

This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the recent trends in bismuth tungstate (Bi₂WO₆) research, covering its structural, electrical, photoluminescent, and photocatalytic properties. The structural characteristics of bismuth tungstate are explored in detail, including its different allotropic crystal structures with respect to its isotypic materials. The electrical properties of bismuth tungstate, such as its conductivity and electron mobility, are also discussed, along with its photoluminescent properties. The photocatalytic activity of bismuth tungstate is a particular focus, with recent advances in doping and co-doping strategies with metals, rare earth and other elements summarized. The limitations and challenges of using bismuth tungstate as a photocatalyst are also examined, such as its low quantum efficiency and susceptibility to photodegradation. Finally, recommendations for future research directions are provided, including the need for further studies on the underlying mechanisms of photocatalytic activity, the development of more efficient and stable bismuth tungstate-based photocatalysts, and the exploration of new applications in fields such as water treatment and energy conversion.

Fluorinated triazoles as privileged potential candidates in drug development—focusing on their biological and pharmaceutical properties

Fluorinated heterocycles have attracted extensive attention not only in organic synthesis but also in pharmaceutical and medicinal sciences due to their enhanced biological activities than their non-fluorinated counterparts. Triazole is a simple five-membered heterocycle with three nitrogen atoms found in both natural and synthetic molecules that impart a broad spectrum of biological properties including but not limited to anticancer, antiproliferative, inhibitory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antiallergic, and antioxidant properties. In addition, incorporation of fluorine into triazole and its derivatives has been reported to enhance their pharmacological activity, making them promising drug candidates. This mini-review explores the current developments of backbone-fluorinated triazoles and functionalized fluorinated triazoles with established biological activities and pharmacological properties.
