Lanthanides β-diketonate complexes as energy-efficient emissive materials: A review

Circularly Polarized Luminescence From Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in a Bimetallic Eu-Al Complex

The emergence of optically active functional compounds through spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is a rare but intriguing phenomenon with relevance of both practical and fundamental interest. Here we show that a racemic Eu-Al compound, bearing only non-chiral ligands, forms a conglomerate upon crystallization. Single crystals of the compound are electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) active. Moreover, we found that a significant enantiomeric excess (50%) of either enantiomer is present in each crystallization batch (non-racemic conglomerate). Such spontaneous symmetry breaking leads not only to optically active single enantiomorph crystals but to an overall solid bulk with significant ECD and CPL.

Impacts of electrogenerated chemiluminescence mechanism on the emission spectra and intensities

In this mini-review, recent progress in electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) reported by our group is mainly introduced. First, the general principles of ECL and standard molecules for ECL are described, and then the ECL properties of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules, pyrrolopyrrole aza-BODIPYs (PPABs), pyrene (Py) and its derivative, Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes are introduced. The ECL efficiency of TADF molecules is increased by spin up-conversion from the T1 to S1 state, and that of PPABs is incremented kinetically due to the slower rate for the T1 state formation than the S1 state formation. The excimer formation mechanism of Py and its derivative in ECL is discussed. It is shown that very sharp ECL spectra can be obtained from Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes. Furthermore, intense ECL for binary mixed systems using Ir(ppy)3 and electron donor or acceptor molecules is described. These results provide insight into how the ECL mechanism affects emission intensity, efficiency, and spectrum.

A difunctional Dy(III) complex exhibiting single-molecule magnet behaviour and fluorescent cellular imaging

A mononuclear Dy(III) complex, with formula [Dy(Dicnq)(TFNB)3] (1), is synthesized through self-assembly with 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-naphthyl)-1,3-butanedione (TFNB) and 6,7-dicyanodipyrido [2,2-d:2',3'-f] quinoxaline (Dicnq) ligands. Single-crystal structure determination reveals that the Dy(III) ion in complex 1 features an N2O6 octacoordinated environment with distorted square-antiprism (D4d) geometry. Magnetic data analysis shows that 1 behaves as a single-molecule magnet, with an energy barrier of 192 K under a zero dc field. With an external field of 1200 Oe, the quantum tunneling of magnetization is suppressed in 1, resulting in an enhanced energy barrier of 261 K. Additionally, 1 displays room-temperature photoluminescence. Leveraging its optical properties and minimal cytotoxic effects, we assess its suitability for cellular-imaging applications. Subsequent laser confocal microscopy analysis revealed that 1 is capable of efficiently traversing the plasma membrane and nuclear membrane of HeLa cells, an observation that is not commonly reported in dysprosium-based complexes.

Chemical Energy Lights Up Europium-Based Ultra-bright Afterglow for Bioanalysis Application

Photochemical afterglow materials are gaining great attention for the property to continuously emit light after the excitation source is removed. However, their limited luminescence quantum yield (QY) and brightness hinder the use in biological applications. In this study, we introduce a novel photochemical afterglow system that combines a newly designed photoenergy cache unit (PCU) with an emitter through coordination covalent bonds. The PCU boasts a dark state to significantly emit photons only through chemiexcitation in the process of photochemical reactions, facilitating direct energy transfer to the emitter and resulting in bright afterglow. The related mechanisms further guided us to achieve the highest reported afterglow luminescence quantum yield of 27.5 %. The system can be encapsulated and dispersed in aqueous solutions for in vivo bioimaging in living mice under mild and simple conditions (low concentration, low excitation power, short excitation time, short exposure time), and also for in vitro diagnostic through lateral flow immunoassay, enabling the highly sensitive detection of the inflammatory biomarker serum amyloid A (SAA) and demonstrating excellent correlation with clinical test results. This study offers new insights into enhancing luminescence QY and brightness of afterglow, highlighting the potential of such systems for further biomedical applications.

Progress in Luminescent Materials Based on Europium(III) Complexes of β-Diketones and Organic Carboxylic Acids

Europium(III) β-diketone and organic carboxylic acid complexes are designable, easy to prepare, and easy to modify and have excellent fluorescence properties (narrow emission spectral band, high colour purity, long fluorescence lifetime, high quantum yield, and a spectral emission range covering both the visible and near-infrared regions). These complexes play important roles in popular fields such as laser and fibre-optic communications, medical diagnostics, immunoassays, fluorescent lasers, sensors, anticounterfeiting, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In the field of light-emitting materials, europium complexes are especially widely used in OLED lamps, especially because of their high-efficiency emission of red (among the three primary colours); accordingly, these complexes can be mixed with blue and green phosphors to obtain high-efficiency white phosphors that can be excited by near-ultraviolet light. This paper reviews the red-light-emitting europium complexes with β-diketone and organic carboxylic acid as ligands that have been studied over the last five years, describes the current problems, and discusses their future application prospects.

Quantum dots - polymer films as the reversible luminescent wide range temperature sensors

The paper considers the temperature sensitivity of luminescence of three polymer types films: polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene and polylactide doped with core-shell CdSe/CdS/ZnS and Cd0.9Mn0.1S/ZnS quantum dots. Films with uniform distribution of quantum dots in the polymer matrix were obtained by the spin-coating method. The influence of the quantum dots and polymer type, as well as their mutual content in the composite, on the thermal sensitivity and thermal stability of the films is considered. The thermal stability of the obtained composites was studied during multiple heating-cooling cycles to 100 and 175 °C, and the conditions for obtaining reusable reversible luminescent thermal sensors were established.

Unmasking the UV Photobleaching of β-Diketonate [Eu(BTFA)4]- Complexes as an Energy-Driven Photoreduction Process

We elucidate the nature of the gradual attenuation of luminescence under sustained ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure in europium [Eu(BTFA)4]- complexes, revealing that it originates from a nonlinear energy-driven process, wherein Eu(III) is irreversibly reduced to Eu(II). This photoreduction was confirmed via the electrochemical techniques cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, which, coupled with luminescence experiments, provided direct evidence of the Eu3+/Eu2+ reduction and the disappearance of Eu(III) after UV exposure. Indeed, extended UV exposure induces a gradual decrease in Eu(III) luminescence, paired with an increased intensity of Eu(II) luminescence, upon direct excitation of the metal ion. To provide an adequate description of this process, we advanced a photochemical law in the energy domain (rather than the time domain) and introduced the concept of photobleaching energy to facilitate comparisons of photostability among various complexes in different solvents. The nonlinearities detected in the energy domain suggest an underlying multiphoton process. As a consequence, we uncovered a trade-off between photostability and luminescence: enhancing one implies diminishing the other. Specifically, the proximity between the complex and cation in nonpolar solvents induces asymmetry in the complex, enhancing luminescence but reducing photostability. Conversely, distancing the cation leaves the complex within a more symmetrical solvent enclosure, decreasing luminescence and increasing photostability. Our findings also indicate that exposing Eu(III) complexes to UV light can function as a method for the photochemical synthesis of Eu(II) complexes, a process further substantiated by our electrochemical experiments.

Exploring the luminescent and thermometric potentials of samarium(III) diketonate complexes with extended fluoroalkyl chains

We synthesized and investigated a new series of Sm3+ 1,3-diketonate complexes with CnF2n+1-homologous thiophene-containing ligands. A clear correlation was found between the number of fluorine atoms in the 1,3-diketone's carbon chain and the luminescent properties of the samarium(III) complexes. The ligand modification method employed facilitates targeted and significant enhancements in the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Notably, the PLQY value peaked at 5.2% for the complex with n = 4 before decreasing with longer chains, a trend contrasting with that observed for Eu and Nd complexes. Temperature-dependent shifts in the CIE coordinates were observed, making these compounds suitable as luminescent thermometers with a sensitivity of 2.2% K-1 and resolution of 0.2 K at 120 K.

Tuning emissive color of trivalent terbium ion through environmental factors: optoelectronic insights from theoretical, spectral and computational studies

The combination of 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione (TFPB) and pyrazine (pyz) with Tb3+ ions forms two distinct types of complexes, represented by the formulas [Tb(TFPB)3(L)2], where L is either H2O or pyz, and [(Tb(TFPB)3)2pyz]. A detailed examination of the impact of the surrounding environment on the photophysical properties of these synthesized complexes was conducted. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis indicated that the magnetic dipole transition (5D4 → 7F5) is dominant in Tb(iii)-based systems. The prepared complexes exhibit visible luminescence in both solid and solution media. Remarkably, the luminescence intensity of the mononuclear complex is significantly higher than that of its dinuclear counterpart, highlighting the impact of efficient energy transfer on emission intensity. The CIE color coordinates of these complexes in solution closely align with NTSC standard values. Additionally, modulation of emissive color is evident when the surrounding media (from solid to solution) and solvent nature are altered. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to elucidate the electronic density distribution in the synthesized complexes. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis, including IR, UV, NMR, thermogravimetry and cyclic voltammetry, was conducted, along with theoretical calculations using Judd-Ofelt analysis.

Synthesis and fluorescence properties of europium complex functionalized fiberglass paper

The development of novel rare earth fluorescent materials and the exploration of their applications have consistently been focal points of research in the fields of materials science and chemistry. In this work, a novel rare earth composite material with good photo-fluorescence properties and self-supporting has been prepared via a simple ultrasonic solvent reaction method. Initially, the Phen moieties is immobilized onto the surface of a self-supporting fiberglass paper using ICPTES, followed by the coordination of Eu(TTA)3 moieties with Phen moieties through a convenient ultrasonic solvent reaction. The resulting GF-Phen-Eu(TTA)3 has been characterized using FTIR, UV-Vis DRS, fluorescence measurements, and so on. The results indicate that the composite material exhibits strong fluorescent emission and presents a vivid red color under ultraviolet light. Further research has shown that the fluorescence of GF-Phen-Eu(TTA)3 strips demonstrated a pronounced quenching effect in response to some transition metal ions (1 mM). Hence, the rare earth composite materials presented here can be utilized not only for the production of optical materials, but also for the development of fluorescence sensing strips.

Optimizing white light emission in Dy(iii) complexes: impact of energy transfer from mono and bidentate ligands on luminescence

Complexes of dysprosium(iii) ions with 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione featuring various mono and bi-dentate neutral ligands have been prepared and thoroughly investigated. The synthesized complexes exhibit an octa-coordinated environment, achieved by stoichiometrically combining organic ligands and Dy(iii) ions. This octa-coordination environment of Dy(iii) ion was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis. Near-white light (NWL) is emitted when complexes were exposed to UV radiation, indicating a significant flow of energy from the sensitizing moieties towards the Dy(iii) ion. This NWL emission might have resulted due to a balance between the intensities corresponding to emission peaks at 480 nm (blue) and 575 nm (yellow) in Dy1-Dy3. Emission spectra recorded at different excitation wavelength were utilized to study the tunability of CIE color coordinates. In addition to their high thermal stability, the complexes display bipolar paramagnetic shifts in their NMR spectra. The 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 transition, contributing ∼62% of the total emission, stands out as a promising candidate for laser amplification due to its dominance in the emission spectra. Additionally, NWL emission observed in a solid Dy(iii) complex opens intriguing possibilities for its application in next-generation white-light emitting devices.

A strategy to enhance the water solubility of luminescent β-diketonate-Europium(III) complexes for time-gated luminescence bioassays

Luminescent β-diketonate-europium(III) complexes have been found a wide range of applications in time-gated luminescence (TGL) bioassays, but their poor water solubility is a main problem that limits their effective uses. In this work we propose a simple and general strategy to enhance the water solubility of luminescent β-diketonate-europium(III) complexes that permits facile synthesis and purification. By introducing the fluorinated carboxylic acid group into the structures of β-diketone ligands, two highly water-soluble and luminescent Eu3+ complexes, PBBHD-Eu3+ and CPBBHD-Eu3+, were designed and synthesized. An excellent solubility exceeding 20 mg/mL for PBBHD-Eu3+ was found in a pure aqueous buffer, while it also displayed strong and long-lived luminescence (quantum yield φ = 26%, lifetime τ = 0.49 ms). After the carboxyl groups of PBBHD-Eu3+ were activated, the PBBHD-Eu3+-labeled streptavidin-bovine serum albumin (SA-BSA) conjugate was prepared, and successfully used for the immunoassay of human α-fetoprotein (AFP) and the imaging of an environmental pathogen Giardia lamblia under TGL mode, which demonstrated the practicability of PBBHD-Eu3+ for highly sensitive TGL bioassays. The carboxyl groups of PBBHD can also be easily derivatized with other reactive chemical groups, which enables PBBHD-Eu3+ to meet diverse requirements of biolabeling technique, to provide new opportunities for developing functional europium(III) complex biolabels serving for TGL bioassays.

Terpyridyl-Imidazole Based Ligand Coordinated to Ln(Hexafluoroacetyl acetonate)3 Core: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, Luminescence Properties, and Thermosensing Behaviors in Solution and PMMA Film

A new array of ternary lanthanide complexes of the form [Ln(hfa)3(tpy-HImzphen)] have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized wherein Ln = LaIII (1), EuIII (2), SmIII (3), and TbIII (4); hfa = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; and tpy-HImzphen = 2-(4-[2,2':6',2″]terpyridin-4'-yl-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole. Incorporation of tpy-HImzphen onto the Ln-hfa moiety induced a bathochromic shift of the absorption window of the complexes into the visible region. Extensive investigations of the luminescence characteristics have been conducted both at RT and at 77 K to understand the deactivation pathways of the complexes. Both steady-state and time-resolved emission spectral behaviors indicate four distinctive behaviors upon incorporation of tpy-HImzphen onto the lanthanide core, viz., a huge red-shift of the ligand-centered peak for LaIII; almost complete energy transfer for EuIII; very little energy transfer for SmIII, while reverse energy transfer in the case of TbIII. In addition, the EuIII-complex exhibits its excellence in luminescence thermometry in the solution state as well as in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films. The thermosensitive luminescence response in solution was further utilized to mimic set-reset flip-flop logic operation. A plausible energy transfer scheme has been devised to explain dissimilar luminescence behaviors in the complexes. The role of LMCT was also considered for the observed thermosensing property of the Eu(III) complex.

Interplay between Theory and Photophysical Characterization in Symmetric α-Substituted Thienyl BODIPY Molecule

4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY)-based molecules have emerged as interesting materials for optoelectronic applications due to the possibility to easily fine-tune their photophysical and optical properties, dominated by two main absorption bands in the visible range. However, no studies have been reported on the nature of these spectral features. By means of ultrafast spectroscopy, we detect intramolecular energy transfer in a spin-coated film of di-thieno-phenyl BODIPY (DTPBDP) dispersed in a polystyrene matrix after pumping the high-energy absorption band. The same effect is not present upon pumping the lowest-energy band, which instead allows the achievement of efficient amplified spontaneous emission. Density functional calculations indicate the different nature of the two main absorption bands, explaining their different photophysical behavior.

Half-Curcuminoids Encapsulated in Alginate-Glucosamine Hydrogel Matrices as Bioactive Delivery Systems

The therapeutic effects of curcumin and its derivatives, based on research in recent years, are limited by their low bioavailability. To improve bioavailability and develop the medical field of application, different delivery systems have been developed that are adapted to certain environments or the proposed target type. This study presents some half-curcuminoids prepared by the condensation of acetylacetone with 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (C1), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (C2), 4-acetamidobenzaldehyde (C3), or 4-diethylaminobenzaldehyde (C4), at microwaves as a simple, solvent-free, and eco-friendly method. The four compounds obtained were characterized in terms of morphostructural and photophysical properties. Following the predictions of theoretical studies on the biological activities related to the molecular structure, in vitro tests were performed for compounds C1-C3 to evaluate the antitumor properties and for C4's possible applications in the treatment of neurological diseases. The four compounds were encapsulated in two types of hydrogel matrices. First, the alginate-glucosamine network was generated and then the curcumin analogs were loaded (G1, G3, G5-G7, and G9). The second type of hydrogels was obtained by loading the active compound together with the generation of the hydrogel carrier matrices, by simply dissolving (G4 and G10) or by chemically binding half-curcuminoid derivatives to glucosamine (G2 and G8). Thus, two types of curcumin analog delivery systems were obtained, which could be applied in various types of medical treatments.

Overdestabilization vs Overstabilization in the Theoretical Analysis of f-Orbital Covalency

The complex nature of the f-orbital electronic structures and their interaction with the chemical environment pose significant computational challenges. Advanced computational techniques that variationally include scalar relativities and spin-orbit coupling directly at the molecular orbital level have been developed to address this complexity. Among these, variational relativistic multiconfigurational multireference methods stand out for their high accuracy and systematic improvement in studies of f-block complexes. Additionally, these advanced methods offer the potential for calibrating low-scaling electronic structure methods such as density functional theory. However, studies on the Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectra of the [Ce(III)Cl6]3- and [Ce(IV)Cl6]2- complexes show that time-dependent density functional theory with approximate exchange-correlation kernels can lead to inaccuracies, resulting in an overstabilization of 4f orbitals and incorrect assessments of covalency. In contrast, approaches utilizing small active space wave function methods may understate the stability of these orbitals. The results herein demonstrate the need for large active space, multireference, and variational relativistic methods in studying f-block complexes.

Crystal structure of tetra-phenyl phosphate tetra-kis-[dimethyl (2,2,2-tri-chloro-acet-yl)phos-pho-ramidato]lutetium(III), PPh4[LuL4]

A lutetium(III) complex based on the anion of the ligand dimethyl (2,2,2-tri-chloro-acet-yl)phospho-ramidate (HL) and tetra-phenylphosphonium, of composition PPh4[LuL 4] (L = CAPh = carbacyl-amido-phosphate), or (C24H20)[Lu(C4H6Cl3NO4P)4], has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The X-ray diffraction study of the compound revealed that the lutetium ion is surrounded by four bis-chelating CAPh ligands, forming the complex anion [LuL 4]- with a coordination number of 8[O] for LuIII, while PPh4 + serves as a counter-ion. The coordination geometry around the Lu3+ ion was determined to be a nearly perfect triangular dodeca-hedron. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, space group P21/c, with four mol-ecules in the unit cell. Weak hydrogen bonds O⋯HC(Ph), Cl⋯HC(Ph) and N⋯HC(Ph) are formed between the cations and anions. For a comparative study, HL-based structures were retrieved from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and their geometries and conformations are discussed. A Hirshfeld surface analysis was also performed.

A terpyridyl-imidazole based europium tris-(β-diketonate) complex as an efficient molecular luminescent thermometer and single component white light emitter via synergy in energy transfer between ligands and Eu3

The thermosensing and thermochromic behavior of one of our recently reported terpyridyl-imidazole based ternary europium tris-(β-diketonate) complexes of the composition [Eu(tta)3(tpy-HImzphen)] (tta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone and tpy-HImzphen = 2-(4-[2,2':6',2''] terpyridin-4'-yl-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole) has been thoroughly investigated in this work. The said Eu(III) complex exhibits magnificent thermosensing as well as thermochromic properties and can be recommended as an excellent temperature sensor in a wide temperature domain of 273-343 K in terms of both emission intensity ratio (Sm = 5.78% K-1 at Tm = 343 K, δT = 0.012 K) and lifetime values (Sm = 3.36% K-1 at Tm = 333 K, δT = 0.009 K) or even in terms of its emitting color (red at 268 K, violet at 303 K, and blue at 343 K). Additionally, it displays remarkable solvent-induced luminescence behavior by displaying various emitting colors instead of its sole characteristic red emission upon varying the nature of the solvent. Finally, amalgamating these two features, we are able to attain white light emission (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates: x = 0.34, y = 0.38) at 283 K from a single component. A plausible energy transfer mechanism has also been proposed in light of the existence of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) state as the quencher.

Zinc Complexes of Fluorosubstituted N-[2-(Phenyliminomethyl)phenyl]-4-methylbenzenesulfamides: Synthesis, Structure, Luminescent Properties, and Biological Activity

Mono-, di-, and trifluorophenyl substituted in different positions of amine fragments bis [2-[[(E)-((fluorophenyl)iminomethyl]-N-(p-tolylsulfonyl)anilino]zinc(II) complexes were synthesized. Their crystal structure, photo- and electroluminescent properties, and protistocidal, fungistatic, and antibacterial activities were studied. It has been shown that the introduction of fluorine atoms and an increase in their number in the ligand structure of the resulting metal complexes promote the luminescence quantum yields and values of performance and brightness in EL cells compared to their previously studied chlorine-substituted analogs.

Synthesis, characterization, luminescence properties and deciphering the role of a terpyridyl-imidazole based ligand in the dissimilar luminescence sensitization of ternary lanthanide(III) tris-(β-diketonate) complexes

We designed four ternary lanthanide tris-(β-diketonate) complexes of the form [Ln(tta)3(tpy-HImzphen)], where Ln = LaIII, EuIII, SmIII and TbIII; tta = (2-theonyltrifluoroacetonate) and tpy-HImzphen = 2-(4-[2,2':6',2'']terpyridin-4'-yl-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole. All the complexes have been thoroughly characterized by standard analytical tools and spectroscopic techniques including single crystal X-ray diffraction. In situ generation of the complexes was also monitored via absorption and emission spectroscopy upon incremental addition of the respective lanthanide precursor {Ln(tta)3(H2O)2} to the dichloromethane solution of the terpyridyl-imidazole ligand. The photophysical behaviors of all the complexes were thoroughly investigated via absorption and both steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopic techniques. The emission spectral measurements were carried out at both room temperature and 77 K to understand the deactivation dynamics of the excited states and elucidate the distinctive luminescence responses from the four lanthanide metal ions owing to the introduction of the terpyridyl-based ancillary ligand.

Luminescent Hybrid BPA.DA-NVP@Eu2L3 Materials: In Situ Synthesis, Spectroscopic, Thermal, and Mechanical Characterization

A series of homogeneous hybrid BPA.DA-NVP@Eu2L3 materials were obtained through an in situ approach where the luminescent dopant was formed at the molecular level with different contents (0.1; 0.2; 0.5; 1; and 2% by weight). A Europium(III) complex (Eu2L3) with quinoline-2,4-dicarboxylic acid was applied as a luminescence additive while a polymer matrix consisted of a combination of bisphenol A diacrylate (BPA.DA) and N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) monomers. Synthesis steps and the final materials were monitored by NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The emission, excitation spectra, lifetime, and quantum yield measurements were applied for the determination of the photophysical characteristics. The thermal and mechanical properties of the obtained materials were tested via thermal analysis methods (TG/DTG/DSC and TG-FTIR) in air and nitrogen atmospheres, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and hardness and bending measurements. Generally, even a small addition of the metal complex component causes changes in the thermal, mechanical, and luminescent properties. Hybrid materials with a greater europium complex content are characterized by a lower stiffness and hardness while the heterogeneity and the flexibility of the samples increase. A very small amount of an Eu2L3 admixture (0.1% wt.) in a hybrid material causes an emission in the red spectral range and the luminescence intensity was reached for the BPA-DA-NVP@1%Eu2L3 material. These materials may be potentially used in chemical sensing, security systems, and protective coatings against UV.

Recent Progress in Photonic Upconversion Materials for Organic Lanthanide Complexes

Organic lanthanide complexes have garnered significant attention in various fields due to their intriguing energy transfer mechanism, enabling the upconversion (UC) of two or more low-energy photons into high-energy photons. In comparison to lanthanide-doped inorganic nanoparticles, organic UC complexes hold great promise for biological delivery applications due to their advantageous properties of controllable size and composition. This review aims to provide a summary of the fundamental concept and recent developments of organic lanthanide-based UC materials based on different mechanisms. Furthermore, we also detail recent applications in the fields of bioimaging and solar cells. The developments and forthcoming challenges in organic lanthanide-based UC offer readers valuable insights and opportunities to engage in further research endeavors.

Synthesis, solid state characterization, theoretical and experimental spectroscopic studies of the new lanthanide complexes

Three new complexes Na[Ln(pic)₄]ּ⋅2.5H₂O (Ln = Tb, Eu or Gd; pic = picolinate) were synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analyses. The molecular structures of the complexes have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The three isostructural lanthanide complexes crystalize in the hexagonal system with space group P6₁22 to Eu complex and Gd complex and space group P6₅22 to Tb complex. In each of the complexes, the picolinate ligands are bonded to Ln³⁺ and Na⁺ ions by different coordination modes promoting polymeric structures. The photoluminescent properties of complexes were studied and combined with theoretical studies using the density functional theory (DFT: B3LYP, PBE1PBE) and the semiempirical method AM1/Sparkle from the single crystal X-ray diffraction structures to assign a suitable model for describing the system. The B3LYP DFT functional was considered the most adequate for providing structural properties of the compounds and for describing luminescence properties. The excited triplet states (T₁) and excited singlet states (S₁) of the ligand were determined theoretically using Time-dependent DFT calculations (TD-DFT: B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP and LC-wPBE) and INDO/S-CIS, with the best agreement with experimental values obtained from the LC-wPBE DFT functional. The photoluminescent spectra of the complexes and their lifetime measurements were determined indicating that the Eu complex and Tb complex display different intramolecular energy transfer mechanisms with higher efficiency to ligand-to-terbium energy transfer. In addition, the experimental and theorical Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and quantum yields of the complexes were also determined and discussed besides to a proposed 9-state diagram to describe the luminescence properties of the Eu complex. The low value of emission quantum efficiency of ⁵D₀ emitting level of Eu(III) ion was explained by the presence of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer state (LMCT) evidenced experimentally and theoretically. A good agreement was obtained between the proposed kinetic model and experimental results showing the consistency of the set of rate equations assumed and the intramolecular pathways proposed.

Potassium and Cesium Fluorinated β-Diketonates: Effect of a Cation and Terminal Substituent on Structural and Thermal Properties

As potential precursors for the synthesis of fluoroperovskites, a family of heavy alkali metal (MI = K, Cs) fluorinated β-diketonates were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and powder-XRD. The crystal structures of the new six complexes, MI(β-dikF)(H2O)X, X = 0 or 1, were also determined. The structural diversity of this poorly explored class of complexes was discussed, including the preferred types of cation polyhedra and the ligand coordination modes, and the thermal properties of the metal β-diketonates were studied by TG-DTA in an inert (He) atmosphere. The data obtained allowed us to reveal the effect of the metal cation and the terminal substituent on the structural and thermal features of this family of complexes.

Exploring Ln(III)-Ion-Based Luminescent Species as Down-Shifters for Photovoltaic Solar Cells

In this work, we have compiled our research on lanthanide-based luminescent materials for use as down-shifter layers in photovoltaic (PV) mini-modules. The complexes we have prepared (C1-17), with formulas [Eu₂(phen)₂(bz)₆] (C1), [Eu₂(bphen)₂(bz)₆] (C2), [Eu(tta)₃bphen] (C3), [Eu(bta)₃pyz-phen] (C4), [Eu(tta)₃pyz-phen] (C5), [Eu(bta)₃me-phen] (C6), [Er(bta)₃me-phen] (C7), [Yb(bta)₃me-phen] (C8), [Gd(bta)₃me-phen] (C9), [Yb(bta)₃pyz-phen] (C10), [Er(tta)₃pyz-phen] (C11), [Eu₂(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C12), [Gd₂(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C13), [EuTb(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C14), [EuGd(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C15), [Eu_1.2Gd_0.8(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C16), and [Eu_1.6Gd_0.4(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂] (C17), can be grouped into three families based on their composition: Complexes C1-6 were synthesized using Eu³⁺ ions and phenanthroline derivatives as the neutral ligands and fluorinated β-diketonates as the anionic ligands. Complexes C7-11 were prepared with ligands similar to those of complexes C1-6 but were synthesized with Er³⁺, Yb³⁺, or Gd³⁺ ions. Complexes C12-17 have the general formula [M1M2(bz)₄(tta)₂(phen)₂], where M1 and M2 can be Eu³⁺, Gd³⁺, or Tb³⁺ ions, and the ligands were benzoate (bz^-), 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (tta^-), and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen). Most of the complexes were characterized using X-ray techniques, and their photoluminescent properties were studied. We then assessed the impact of complexes in the C1-6 and C12-17 series on the EQE of PV mini-modules and examined the durability of one of the complexes (C6) in a climate chamber when embedded in PMMA and EVA films. This study emphasizes the methodology employed and the key findings, including enhanced mini-module efficiency. Additionally, we present promising results on the application of complex C6 in a bifacial solar cell.

Perfluoroalkyl Chain Length Effect on Crystal Packing and [LnO8] Coordination Geometry in Lanthanide-Lithium β-Diketonates: Luminescence and Single-Ion Magnet Behavior

Functionalized perfluoroalkyl lithium β-diketonates (LiL) react with lanthanide(III) salts (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy) in methanol to give heterobimetallic Ln-Li complexes of general formula [(LnL₃)(LiL)(MeOH)]. The length of fluoroalkyl substituent in ligand was found to affect the crystal packing of complexes. Photoluminescent and magnetic properties of heterobimetallic β-diketonates in the solid state are reported. The effect of the geometry of the [LnO₈] coordination environment of heterometallic β-diketonates on the luminescent properties (quantum yields, phosphorescence lifetimes for Eu, Tb, Dy complexes) and single-ion magnet behavior (U_eff for Dy complexes) is revealed.

Highly Luminescent Europium(III) Complexes in Solution and PMMA-Doped Films for Bright Red Electroluminescent Devices

This paper reports the synthesis, structure, photophysical, and optoelectronic properties of five eight-coordinate Europium(III) ternary complexes, namely, [Eu(hth)₃(L)₂], bearing 4,4,5,5,6,6,6-heptafluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-hexanedione (hth) as a sensitizer and L = H₂O (1), dpso (diphenyl sulphoxide, 2), dpsoCH₃ (4,4'-dimethyl diphenyl sulfoxide, 3), dpsoCl (bis(4-chlorophenyl)sulphoxide, 4), and tppo (triphenylphosphine oxide, 5) as co-ligands. The NMR and the crystal structure analysis confirmed the eight-coordinate structures of the complexes in solution and in a solid state. Upon UV-excitation on the absorption band of the β-diketonate ligand hth, all complexes showed the characteristic bright red luminescence of the Europium ion. The tppo derivative (5) displayed the highest quantum yield (up to 66%). As a result, an organic light-emitting device, OLED, was fabricated with a multi-layered structure-ITO/MoO₃/mCP/SF3PO:[complex 5] (10%)/TPBi:[complex 5] (10%)/TmPyPB/LiF/Al-using complex 5 as the emitting component.

Dynamics of the Ligand Excited States Relaxation in Novel β-Diketonates of Non-Luminescent Trivalent Metal Ions

Complexes emitting in the blue spectral region are attractive materials for developing white-colored light sources. Here, we report the luminescence properties of novel coordination compounds based on the trivalent group 3, 13 metals, and the 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-cyclohexylcarbonyl-pyrazol-5-onate (QCH) ligand. [M(QCH)3] (M = Al, Ga, and In), [M(QCH)3(H2O)] (M = Sc, Gd, and Lu), [Lu(QCH)3(DMSO)], and [La(QCH)3(H2O)(EtOH)] complexes were synthesized and structurally characterized by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. It has been found that the luminescence quantum yields of the ligand increase by one order of magnitude upon metal coordination. A significant correspondence between the energies of the ligand's excited states and the luminescence quantum yields to the metal ion's atomic numbers was found using molecular spectroscopy techniques. The replacement of the central ion with the heavier one leads to a monotonic increase in singlet state energy, while the energy of the triplet state is similar for all the complexes. Time-resolved measurements allowed us to estimate the intersystem crossing (ISC) rate constants. It was shown that replacing the Al3+ ion with the heavier diamagnetic Ga3+ and In3+ ions decreased the ISC rate, while the replacement with the paramagnetic Gd3+ ion increased the ISC rate, which resulted in a remarkably bright and room-temperature phosphorescence of [Gd(QCH)3(H2O)].

Optical, electrochemical and photophysical analyses of heteroleptic luminescent Ln(iii) complexes for lighting applications

A series of lanthanide complexes have been synthesized with fluorinated 1,3-diketones and heteroaromatic ancillary moieties. Spectroscopic studies reveal the attachment of the respective lanthanide ion to the oxygen site of β-diketone and nitrogen site of auxiliary moieties. The conducting behavior of the complexes is proposed by their optical energy gaps which lie in the range of semiconductors. The emission profiles of the lanthanide complexes demonstrate red and green luminescence owing to the distinctive transitions of Sm³⁺ and Tb³⁺ ions, respectively. Energy transfer via antenna effect clearly reveals the effective transfer of energy from the chromophoric moiety to the Ln³⁺ ion. The prepared conducting and luminescent Ln(iii) complexes might be employed as the emitting component in designing OLEDs.

Computational and optoelectronic quantification of semi-conducting, warm ruby red color emanating Eu3+ complexes with hetro-cyclic ligands

Six Eu³⁺ complexes were synthesised with β-keto acid as main ligand and secondary ligands through liquid assisted grinding method. These complexes were characterised by various techniques such as spectroscopic technique, XRD, EDAX, SEM analysis, thermal technique, Urbach energy and optical band gap investigation. The luminous photophysical properties were studied by PL spectroscopy in solid as well as solution phase and some theoretical calculation was done to investigate the radiative (A_rad) & non-radiative (A_nrad) transition rate, quantum efficiency (ɸ), Judd Ofelt parameters for ⁵D₀ → ⁷F_2,4 transitions in both states. Judd Ofelt parameters were also calculated by the JOES software and the outcomes are well harmonised with theoretical values. The complexes have CIE color coordinate value in ruby red region and above 88.65% color purity in both phases, which made them attractive candidates for red light-emitting displays. ⁵D₀ → ⁷F₂ transition was proposed as a laser emission transition owing to their high branching ratio (67.18-74.24%) in solid and (60.09-74.40%) in solution phase. Computational methods were employed to determine the structure and energy of various molecular orbitals. Antimicrobial assay of complexes was also rationalised and found that the complexes are pertinent as good bactericidal and fungicidal agents in pharmaceutical industry.

Self-Assembly of a Two-Dimensional Coordination Polymer Based on Silver and Lanthanide Tetrakis-Acylpyrazolonates: An Efficient New Strategy for Suppressing Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer Quenching of Europium Luminescence

A new strategy for the easy polymerization of anionic [Ln(Q^cy)₄]^- (HQ^cy-4-(cyclohexanecarbonyl)-5-methyl-2-phenyl-2,4-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one) into two-dimensional layers of [AgLn(Q^cy)₄]_n (Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and Dy) is proposed by binding the single molecular anions [Ln(Q^cy)₄]^- to silver cations through the coordination of the pyridinic nitrogen atoms of the pyrazolonate rings. The luminescent properties of [AgLn(Q^cy)₄]_n have been studied in detail, and it was shown that the previously described low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of [Eu(Q^cy)₄]^- is due to Ligand-To-Metal Charge Transfer (LMCT) quenching, which is effectively suppressed in the heterometallic [AgEu(Q^cy)₄]_n polymer. Sensibilization coefficients for H₃O[Eu(Q^cy)₄], [AgEu(Q^cy)₄]_n, and H₃O[Sm(Q^cy)₄] complexes (n ≈ 1) were estimated via theoretical analysis (also by using Judd-Ofelt theory for Sm³⁺) and PLQY measurements.

Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes for Effective Oxygen-Sensing and Singlet Oxygen Generation

Oxygen quantification using luminescence has attracted considerable attention in various fields, including environmental monitoring and clinical analysis. Among the reported luminophores, trivalent lanthanide complexes have displayed characteristic narrow emission bands with high brightness. This bright emission is based on photo-sensitized energy transfer via organic triplet states. The organic triplet states in lanthanide complexes effectively react with the triplet oxygen, enabling oxygen quantification by lanthanide luminescence. Some Tb^III and Eu^III complexes with slow deactivation processes have also formed the excited state equilibrium, thus resulting in the emission-lifetime based oxygen sensing property. The combination of Tb^III /Eu^III emission, Eu^III /Sm^III emission, Eu^III /ligand phosphorescence, and ligand fluorescence/ligand phosphorescence provide the ratiometric oxygen-sensing properties. Moreover, the reaction generates singlet oxygen species which exhibit numerous applications in the photo-medical field. The ligands with large π-conjugated aromatic systems, such as porphyrin, phthalocyanine, and polyaromatic compounds, induces highly efficient oxygen generation. The combination of effective luminescence with singlet-oxygen generation by the lanthanide complexes render them suitable for photo-driven theranostics. This review summarizes the research progress of lanthanide complexes with efficient oxygen-sensing and singlet-oxygen generation properties.

Synthesis of green emissive terbium(III) complexes for displays: Optical, electrochemical and photoluminescent analysis

A series of heteroleptic terbium(III) complexes with fluorinated 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTFA) and other heteroaromatic units have been synthesized. The developed heteroleptic complexes were inspected via elemental study, cyclic voltammetry, thermal analysis and spectroscopic investigations. Optical band-gap data proposed the conducting property of prepared complexes. The photoluminescence emission profiles illustrated peaks based on terbium(III) cation (Tb³⁺ ) positioned at ~617, 586, 546 and 491 nm, imputed to ⁵ D₄ to ⁷ F_J (J = 3,4,5,6) transitions separately. Most intense peak at 546 nm corresponding to ⁵ D₄  → ⁷ F₅ transition is accountable for the green emissive character of developed complexes. The luminous character of complexes reveals the sensitization of Tb³⁺ by ligands. Color parameters further corroborates the green emanation of Tb³⁺ complexes. The photometric characteristics of complexes recommended their usages in designing display devices.

Heterometallic Molecular Architectures Based on Fluorinated β-Diketone Ligands

This review summarizes the data on the synthesis of coordination compounds containing two or more different metal ions based on fluorinated β-diketonates. Heterometallic systems are of high interest in terms of their potential use in catalysis, medicine and diagnostics, as well as in the development of effective sensor devices and functional materials. Having a rich history in coordination chemistry, fluorinated β-diketones are well-known ligands generating a wide variety of heterometallic complexes. In this context, we focused on both the synthetic approaches to β-dicarbonyl ligands with additional coordination centers and their possible transformations in complexation reactions. The review describes bi- and polynuclear structures in which β-diketones are the key building blocks in the formation of a heterometallic framework, including the examples of both homo- and heteroleptic complexes.

Luminous LaAlO3 :Dy3+ perovskite nanomaterials: Synthesis, structural and luminescent characteristics for WLEDs

Single-phase perovskite LaAlO₃ :Dy³⁺ phosphor was synthesized via gel-combustion method at 600 °C utilization Hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) as a fuel. Further calcination of the samples was carried out (800 and 1000 °C) to investigate the resultant effect on the crystalline and luminescence behaviour. The crystal structure having cubic unit cell (space group Pm3̅m) was examined via Rietveld refinement using X-ray diffraction (XRD) data. Additionally, Debye-Scherrer's and Williamson-Hall equations were applied to determine other structural features. The particle size and morphology of phosphors were evaluated using Transmission electron microscope (TEM). Diffraction measurements were supported by the various metal-oxygen vibration modes studied with the help of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) verified the chemical composition of synthesized sample. Luminescence spectra of LaAlO₃ :Dy³⁺ phosphors exhibited intense bands for ⁴ F_9/2 → ⁶ H_15/2 (482 nm, bluish region) and ⁴ F_9/2 → ⁶ H_13/2 (574 nm, yellowish region) transitions. Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) and Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) data confirmed cool-white emission of samples under UV-excitation. The interesting and advantageous luminescence characteristics of LaAlO₃ :Dy³⁺ phosphors make them potential materials for WLEDs.

Mononuclear luminous β-diketonate Ln (III) complexes with heteroaromatic auxiliary ligands: Synthesis and luminescent characteristics

A series of lanthanide (samarium and terbium) β-diketonates with heteroaromatic auxiliary ligands have been synthesized. The prepared complexes were characterized through electrochemical, thermal and spectroscopic analyses. Infrared analysis reveals the binding of respective metal ion to oxygen and nitrogen atoms of diketone and ancillary ligands respectively. TG/DTG profiles provide thermal information and specify the high thermal stability of the prepared complexes. The complexes exhibit the sharp and structured Ln-based emission in visible region upon irradiation in UV range. Photophysical analysis demonstrated the green and orange-red emission due to the respective characteristic transitions of Tb³⁺ and Sm³⁺ ions. Photophysical properties affirm the luminous behavior of synthesized complexes. These luminous lanthanide complexes could be used as emitting material in designing OLEDs.

New Carboxylate Anionic Sm-MOF: Synthesis, Structure and Effect of the Isomorphic Substitution of Sm3+ with Gd3+ and Tb3+ Ions on the Luminescent Properties

Two new compounds, namely {(NMe2H2)}[Ln(TDA)(HCOO)] 0.5H2O, Ln = Sm3+ (Sm-TDA) and Gd3+ (Gd-TDA), where TDA3− is the anion of 1H-1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid (H3TDA), were synthesized by the solvothermal method in a DMF:H2O mixture. According to single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, the compounds are 3d-MOFs with an anionic lattice and dimethylammonium cations occupying part of the cavities. Based on these compounds, two series of mixed-metal complexes, [NMe2H2][SmxLn1-x(TDA)(HCOO)], (x = 0.9 (Sm0.9Ln0.1-TDA), x = 0.8 (Sm0.8-Ln0.2-TDA)…Sm0.02Ln0.98-TDA, Ln = Tb, Gd), were also obtained and characterized by powder XRD. The luminescent properties of the compounds were studied and it was shown that the resulting compounds are two- or three-component emitters with the possibility of fine color tuning by changing the intensities of fluorescence and phosphorescence of the ligand, as well as the luminescence of Sm3+ and Tb3+ f-ions.

Cross-Linked Luminescent Polymers Based on β-Diketone-Modified Polysiloxanes and Organoeuropiumsiloxanes

Nowadays, luminescent materials attract wide attention due to their valuable characteristics and broad area of potential application. Luminescent silicone-based polymers possess unique properties, such as flexibility, hydrophobicity, thermal and chemical stabilities, etc., which allow them to be utilized in various fields, such as optoelectronics, solid-state lasers, luminescent solar concentrators, sensors, and others. In the present work, a metal-ligand interaction approach was applied to obtain new cross-linked luminescent polymers based on multiligand polysiloxanes with grafted β-diketone fragments and organoeuropiumsiloxanes containing various organic substituents. Organoeuropiumsiloxanes were utilized as a source of Eu³⁺ ions due to their compatibility with the silicon matrix. All synthesized polymers were fully characterized and their physicochemical, mechanical, self-healing, optical, and thermal properties were studied.
