Synthesis, crystal structure and antioxidant activity of butylphenol Schiff bases: Experimental and DFT study

DFT and TDDFT exploration on the role of pyridyl ligands with copper toward bonding aspects and light harvesting

CONTEXT

Schiff base-containing metal complexes have been the subject of extensive research. In this work, a coordination polymer-derived complex called [Cu(L)] that is solution-stable (L = 2-(2-hydroxybenzylidene-amino)phenol) has been explored theoretically with five different pyridyl-based ligands using DFT/TDDFT in order to understand the structural-functional and electronic transitions of these five complexes. Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis was carried out to assess the reactivity behavior of all five complexes. For the purpose of studying the charge energy distribution over complexes, electrostatic potential maps were also drawn. Furthermore, in order to identify any stabilizing interactions that may be present in the given complexes, an NBO analysis was studied. To learn more about any potential correlations between the properties of these five complexes, a comparative analysis was explored. Our calculations demonstrate that complex 3 having pyridine-4-carboxamide as a ligand has a lower energy gap and a higher negative electrostatic potential which may indicate its higher reactivity and this may be due to the electron withdrawing group (carboxamide). TDDFT results show that the highest light harvesting efficiency (LHE) of all the studied complexes is found in the range of 440-448 nm. Complexes 1, 2, and 4 show the higher light harvesting efficiency as compared to complexes 3 and 5. Our findings are in good accordance with the available experimental data.

METHODS

All DFT computations were performed using the Gaussian16 with unrestricted B3LYP-D2 functional with the basis sets 6-31G(d,p) for O, N, C, and H while LanL2DZ for Cu. The polarized continuum model (PCM) was used for the solvation. The software GaussView6.1 was utilized for the modeling of initial geometries and the plotting of MEP maps. The NBO6.0 program which is incorporated in Gaussian16 was utilized to investigate the bonding nature and stabilization energies of the complexes. The ORCA program was used to simulate the absorption spectra.

Thioether-based novel transition metal complexes: Synthesis, DNA interaction, in vitro biological assay, DFT calculations, and molecular docking studies

A novel Schiff base ligand 2-(((2-(benzylthio)phenyl)imino)methyl)-4-chlorophenol and its cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc metal complexes were prepared. Using B3LYP/6-31++G(d,p) method with LanL2DZ as basis set, the molecular structure of metal complexes has been optimized, and their parameters have been explored. The distorted octahedral geometries have been observed in cobalt, nickel, and copper complexes. In contrast, zinc complex exhibited distorted tetrahedral geometry indicating the coordination of metal ions with ligands through ONS binding sites, which are confirmed by various spectroscopic techniques, magnetic measurements, molar conductivity, elemental analysis, and DFT studies. The intercalative binding mode between CT-DNA and synthesized metal complexes has been determined by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The binding constant values of metal complexes found to be varied from 5.28 × 10³ M^-1 to 9.18 × 10⁴ M^-1. Furthermore, several methods have been used to scrutinize the bioactivities, such as in vitro anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. From the obtained results, it can be concluded that zinc metal complex exhibited excellent anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic activity compared to others. However, the copper complex has good antioxidant property. Besides deducing the prospective binding energies of inhibitors, molecular docking simulations have also been conducted utilizing the enzyme structures of B-DNA, 6-COX, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase.

Heteroligand α-Diimine-Zn(II) Complexes with O,N,O'- and O,N,S-Donor Redox-Active Schiff Bases: Synthesis, Structure and Electrochemical Properties

A number of novel heteroligand Zn(II) complexes (1-8) of the general type (Lⁿ)Zn(NN) containing O,N,O'-, O,N,S-donor redox-active Schiff bases and neutral N,N'-chelating ligands (NN) were synthesized. The target Schiff bases LⁿH₂ were obtained as a result of the condensation of 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde with substituted o-aminophenols or o-aminothiophenol. These ligands with combination with 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, and neocuproine are able to form stable complexes upon coordination with zinc(II) ion. The molecular structures of complexes 4∙H₂O, 6, and 8 in crystal state were determined by means of single-crystal X-ray analysis. In the prepared complexes, the redox-active Schiff bases are in the form of doubly deprotonated dianions and act as chelating tridentate ligands. Complexes 6 and 8 possess a strongly distorted pentacoordinate geometry while 4∙H₂O is hexacoordinate and contains water molecule coordinated to the central zinc atom. The electrochemical properties of zinc(II) complexes were studied by the cyclic voltammetry. For the studied complexes, O,N,O'- or O,N,S-donor Schiff base ligands are predominantly involved in electrochemical transformations in the anodic region, while the N,N'-coordinated neutral nitrogen donor ligands demonstrate the electrochemical activity in the cathode potential range. A feature of complexes 5 and 8 with sterically hindered tert-butyl groups is the possibility of the formation of relatively stable monocation and monoanion forms under electrochemical conditions. The values of the energy gap between the boundary redox orbitals were determined by electrochemical and spectral methods. The parameters obtained in the first case vary from 1.97 to 2.42 eV, while the optical bang gap reaches 2.87 eV.

An Insight into All Tested Small Molecules against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. Albedinis: A Comparative Review

Bayoud disease affects date palms in North Africa and the Middle East, and many researchers have used various methods to fight it. One of those methods is the chemical use of synthetic compounds, which raises questions centred around the compounds and common features used to prepare targeted molecules. In this review, 100 compounds of tested small molecules, collected from 2002 to 2022 in Web of Sciences, were divided into ten different classes against the main cause of Bayoud disease pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. albedinis (F.o.a.) with structure-activity relationship (SAR) interpretations for pharmacophore site predictions as (δ^-···δ^-), where 12 compounds are the most efficient (one compound from each group). The compounds, i.e., (Z)-1-(1.5-Dimethyl-1H-pyrazole-3-yl)-3-hydroxy but-2-en-1-one 7, (Z)-3-(phenyl)-1-(1,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole-3-yl)-3-hydroxyprop-2-en-1-one 23, (Z)-1-(1,5-Dimethyl-1H-pyrazole-3-yl)-3-hydroxy-3-(pyridine-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one 29, and 2,3-bis-[(2-hydroxy-2-phenyl)ethenyl]-6-nitro-quinoxaline 61, have antifungal pharmacophore sites (δ^-···δ^-) in common in N1---O4, whereas other compounds have only one δ^- pharmacophore site pushed by the donor effect of the substituents on the phenyl rings. This specificity interferes in the biological activity against F.o.a. Further understanding of mechanistic drug-target interactions on this subject is currently underway.
