Combining macroscopic and microscopic diffusion studies in zeolites using NMR techniques

Diffusion of confined fluids in microporous zeolites and clay materials

Fluids exhibit remarkable variation in their structural and dynamic properties when they are confined at the nanoscopic scale. Various factors, including geometric restriction, the size and shape of the guest molecules, the topology of the host, and guest-host interactions, are responsible for the alterations in these properties. Due to their porous structures, aluminosilicates provide a suitable host system for studying the diffusion of sorbates in confinement. Zeolites and clays are two classes of the aluminosilicate family, comprising very ordered porous or layered structures. Zeolitic materials are important due to their high catalytic activity and molecular sieving properties. Guest molecules adsorbed by zeolites display many interesting features including unidimensional diffusion, non-isotropic rotation, preferred orientation and levitation effects, depending on the guest and host characteristics. These are useful for the separation of hydrocarbons which commonly exist as mixtures in nature. Similarly, clay materials have found application in catalysis, desalination, enhanced oil recovery, and isolation barriers used in radioactive waste disposal. It has been shown that the bonding interactions, level of hydration, interlayer spacing, and number of charge-balancing cations are the important factors that determine the nature of diffusion of water molecules in clays. Here, we present a review of the current status of the diffusion mechanisms of various adsorbed species in different microporous zeolites and clays, as investigated using quasielastic neutron scattering and classical molecular dynamics simulation techniques. It is impossible to write an exhaustive review of the subject matter, as it has been explored over several decades and involves many research topics. However, an effort is made to cover the relevant issues specific to the dynamics of different molecules in microporous zeolites and clay materials and to highlight a variety of interesting features that are important for both practical applications and fundamental aspects.

The zero length column technique to measure adsorption equilibrium and kinetics: lessons learnt from 30 years of experience

The zero length column technique has been developed over the past 30 years as a versatile experimental method to measure adsorption equilibrium and kinetics. In this review we discuss in detail the theory that forms the basis for the technique in order to understand how to design and operate efficiently a system. Experimental checks that should be performed to ensure the correct interpretation of the dynamic response are presented and examples are used to identify how to avoid major errors in determining diffusion time constants. The review concludes with an overview of all experimental studies available in the literature to date and a set of recommendations that should help improve the standard in the reported equilibrium and kinetic properties.

Net, excess and absolute adsorption and adsorption of helium

The definitions of absolute, excess and net adsorption in microporous materials are used to identify the correct limits at zero and infinite pressure. Absolute adsorption is shown to be the fundamental thermodynamic property and methods to determine the solid density that includes the micropore volume are discussed. A simple means to define when it is necessary to distinguish between the three definitions at low pressure is presented. To highlight the practical implications of the analysis the case of adsorption of helium is considered in detail and a combination of experiments and molecular simulations is used to clarify how to interpret adsorption measurements for weakly adsorbed components.

1H NMR signal broadening in spectra of alkane molecules adsorbed on MFI-type zeolites

The anisotropic behavior of C1-C6 alkane molecules adsorbed in MFI zeolite was studied by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) using single-pulse excitation, Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) pulse sequence, Hahn echo (HE) pulse sequence, and magic-angle spinning. The molecular order parameter was obtained by both static 2H NMR spectroscopy and molecular simulations. This yields an order parameter in the range of 0.28-0.42 for linear alkanes in MFI zeolite, whereas the parameter equals zero for FAU zeolite with a cubic symmetry. Thus, in the case of a zeolite with a non-cubic symmetry like MFI, the mobility of the molecules in one crystallite cannot fully average the dipolar interaction. As a consequence, transverse nuclear magnetization as revealed in the echo attenuation notably deviates from a mono-exponential decay. This information is of particular relevance for the performance of pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR diffusion experiments, since the occurrence of non-exponential magnetization attenuation could be taken as an indication of the existence of different molecules or of molecules in different states of mobility.
