Effect of spiral undersampling patterns on FISP MRF parameter maps

Reducing femoral flow artefacts in radial magnetic resonance fingerprinting of the prostate using region-optimised virtual coils

High acceleration factors in radial magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) of the prostate lead to strong streak-like artefacts from flow in the femoral blood vessels, possibly concealing important anatomical information. Region-optimised virtual (ROVir) coils is a beamforming-based framework to create virtual coils that maximise signal in a region of interest while minimising signal in a region of interference. In this study, the potential of removing femoral flow streak artefacts in prostate MRF using ROVir coils is demonstrated in silico and in vivo. The ROVir framework was applied to radial MRF k-space data in an automated pipeline designed to maximise prostate signal while minimising signal from the femoral vessels. The method was tested in 15 asymptomatic volunteers at 3 T. The presence of streaks was visually assessed and measurements of whole prostate T1, T2 and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with and without streak correction were examined. In addition, a purpose-built simulation framework in which blood flow through the femoral vessels can be turned on and off was used to quantitatively evaluate ROVir's ability to suppress streaks in radial prostate MRF. In vivo it was shown that removing selected ROVir coils visibly reduces streak-like artefacts from the femoral blood flow, without increasing the reconstruction time. On average, 80% of the prostate SNR was retained. A similar reduction of streaks was also observed in silico, while the quantitative accuracy of T1 and T2 mapping was retained. In conclusion, ROVir coils efficiently suppress streaking artefacts from blood flow in radial MRF of the prostate, thereby improving the visual clarity of the images, without significant sacrifices to acquisition time, reconstruction time and accuracy of quantitative values. This is expected to help enable T1 and T2 mapping of prostate cancer in clinically viable times, aiding differentiation between prostate cancer from noncancer and healthy prostate tissue.

Reconstruction of multi-phase parametric maps in 4D-magnetic resonance fingerprinting (4D-MRF) by optimization of local T1 and T2 sensitivities

BACKGROUND

Time-resolved magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF), or 4D-MRF, has been demonstrated its feasibility in motion management in radiotherapy (RT). However, the prohibitive long acquisition time is one of challenges of the clinical implementation of 4D-MRF. The shortening of acquisition time causes data insufficiency in each respiratory phase, leading to poor accuracies and consistencies of the predicted tissues' properties of each phase.

PURPOSE

To develop a technique for the reconstruction of multi-phase parametric maps in four-dimensional magnetic resonance fingerprinting (4D-MRF) through the optimization of local T1 and T2 sensitivities.

METHODS

The proposed technique employed an iterative optimization to tailor the data arrangement of each phase by manipulation of inter-phase frames, such that the T1 and T2 sensitivities, which were quantified by the modified Minkowski distance, of the truncated signal evolution curve was maximized. The multi-phase signal evolution curves were modified by sliding window reconstruction and inter-phase frame sharing (SWIFS). Motion correction (MC) and dot product matching were sequentially performed on the modified signal evolution and dictionary to reconstruct the multi-parametric maps. The proposed technique was evaluated by numerical simulations using the extended cardiac-torso (XCAT) phantom with regular and irregular breathing patterns, and by in vivo MRF data of three health volunteers and six liver cancer patients acquired at a 3.0 T scanner.

RESULTS

In simulation study, the proposed SWIFS approach achieved the overall mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 8.62% ± 1.59% and 16.2% ± 3.88% for the eight-phases T1 and T2 maps, respectively, in the sagittal view with irregular breathing patterns. In contrast, the overall MAPE of T1 and T2 maps generated by the conventional approach with multiple MRF repetitions were 22.1% ± 11.0% and 30.8% ± 14.9%, respectively. For in-vivo study, the predicted mean T1 and T2 of liver by the proposed SWIFS approach were 795 ms ± 38.9 ms and 58.3 ms ± 11.7 ms, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Both simulation and in vivo results showed that the approach empowered by T1 and T2 sensitivities optimization and sliding window under the shortened acquisition of MRF had superior performance in the estimation of multi-phase T1 and T2 maps as compared to the conventional approach with oversampling of MRF data.

Water diffusion and T2 quantification in transient-state MRI: the effect of RF pulse sequence

In quantitative measurement of the T 2 value of tissues, the diffusion of water molecules has been recognized as a confounder. This is most notably so for transient-state quantitative mapping techniques, which allow simultaneous estimation of T 1 and T 2 . In prior work, apparently conflicting conclusions are presented on the level of diffusion-induced bias on the T2 estimate. So far there is a lack of studies on the effect of the RF pulse angle sequence on the level of diffusion-induced bias. In this work, we show that the specific transient-state RF pulse sequence has a large effect on this level of bias. In particular, the bias level is strongly influenced by the mean value of the RF pulse angles. Also, for realistic values of the spoiling gradient area, we infer that the diffusion-induced bias is negligible for non-liquid human tissues; yet, for phantoms, the effect can be substantial (15% of the true T 2 value) for some RF pulse sequences. This should be taken into account in validation procedures.

Efficient performance analysis and optimization of transient-state sequences for multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging

In transient-state multiparametric MRI sequences such as Magnetic Resonance Spin TomogrAphy in Time-domain (MR-STAT), MR fingerprinting, or hybrid-state imaging, the flip angle pattern of the RF excitation varies over the sequence. This gives considerable freedom to choose an optimal pattern of flip angles. For pragmatic reasons, most optimization methodologies choose for a single-voxel approach (i.e., without taking the spatial encoding scheme into account). Particularly in MR-STAT, the context of spatial encoding is important. In the current study, we present a methodology, called BLock Analysis of a K-space-domain Jacobian (BLAKJac), which is sufficiently fast to optimize a sequence in the context of a predetermined phase-encoding pattern. Based on MR-STAT acquisitions and reconstructions, we show that sequences optimized using BLAKJac are more reliable in terms of actually achieved precision than conventional single-voxel-optimized sequences. In addition, BLAKJac provides analytical tools that give insights into the performance of the sequence in a very limited computation time. Our experiments are based on MR-STAT, but the theory is equally valid for other transient-state multiparametric methods.

Feasibility of Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting on Aging MRI Hardware

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of performing magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) on older and lower-performance MRI hardware as a means to bring advanced imaging to the aging MRI install base. Phantom and in vivo experiments were performed on a 1.5T Siemens Aera (installed 2015) and 1.5T Siemens Symphony (installed 2002). A 2D spiral MRF sequence for simultaneous T₁/T₂/M₀ mapping was implemented on both scanners with different gradient trajectories to accommodate system specifications. In phantom, for T₁/T₂ values in a physiologically relevant range (T₁: 195-1539 ms; T₂: 20-267 ms), scanners had strong correlation (R² > 0.999) with average absolute percent difference of 8.1% and 10.1%, respectively. Comparison of the two trajectories on the newer scanner showed differences of 2.6% (T₁) and 10.9% (T₂), suggesting a partial explanation of the observed inter-scanner bias. Inter-scanner agreement was better when the same trajectory was used, with differences of 6.0% (T₁) and 4.0% (T₂). Intra-scanner coefficient of variation (CV) of T₁ and T₂ estimates in phantom were <2.0% and in vivo were ≤3.5%. In vivo inter-scanner white matter CV was 4.8% (T₁) and 5.1% (T₂). White matter measurements on the aging scanner after two months were consistent, with differences of 1.9% (T₁) and 3.9% (T₂). In conclusion, MRF is feasible on an aging MRI scanner and required only changes to the gradient trajectory.

A Spatial Off-Resonance Correction in Spirals for Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting

In MR Fingerprinting (MRF), balanced Steady-State Free Precession (bSSFP) has advantages over unbalanced SSFP because it retains the spin history achieving a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and scan efficiency. However, bSSFP-MRF is not frequently used because it is sensitive to off-resonance, producing artifacts and blurring, and affecting the parametric map quality. Here we propose a novel Spatial Off-resonance Correction (SOC) approach for reducing these artifacts in bSSFP-MRF with spiral trajectories. SOC-MRF uses each pixel's Point Spread Function to create system matrices that encode both off-resonance and gridding effects. We iteratively compute the inverse of these matrices to reduce the artifacts. We evaluated the proposed method using brain simulations and actual MRF acquisitions of a standardized T1/T2 phantom and five healthy subjects. The results show that the off-resonance distortions in T1/T2 maps were considerably reduced using SOC-MRF. For T2, the Normalized Root Mean Square Error (NRMSE) was reduced from 17.3 to 8.3% (simulations) and from 35.1 to 14.9% (phantom). For T1, the NRMS was reduced from 14.7 to 7.7% (simulations) and from 17.7 to 6.7% (phantom). For in-vivo, the mean and standard deviation in different ROI in white and gray matter were significantly improved. For example, SOC-MRF estimated an average T2 for white matter of 77ms (the ground truth was 74ms) versus 50 ms of MRF. For the same example the standard deviation was reduced from 18 ms to 6ms. The corrections achieved with the proposed SOC-MRF may expand the potential applications of bSSFP-MRF, taking advantage of its better SNR property.

Temperature dependence, accuracy, and repeatability of T1 and T2 relaxation times for the ISMRM/NIST system phantom measured using MR fingerprinting

PURPOSE

Before MR fingerprinting (MRF) can be adopted clinically, the derived quantitative values must be proven accurate and repeatable over a range of T₁ and T₂ values and temperatures. Correct assessment of accuracy and precision as well as comparison between measurements can only be performed when temperature is either controlled or corrected for. The purpose of this study was to investigate the temperature dependence of T₁ and T₂ MRF values and evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of temperature-corrected relaxation values derived from a B₁ -corrected MRF-fast imaging with steady-state precession implementation using 2 different dictionary sizes.

METHODS

The International Society of MR in Medicine/National Institute of Standards and Technology phantom was scanned using an MRF sequence of 2 different lengths, a variable flip angle T₁ , and a multi-echo spin echo T₂ at 14 temperatures ranging from 15°C to 28°C and investigated with a linear regression model. Temperature-corrected accuracy was evaluated by correlating T₁ and T₂ times from each MRF dictionary with reference values. Repeatability was assessed using the coefficient of variation, with measurements taken over 30 separate sessions.

RESULTS

There was a statistically significant fit of the model for MRF-derived T₁ and T₂ and temperature (p < 0.05) for all the spheres with a T₁ > 500 ms. Both MRF methods showed a strong linear correlation with reference values for T₁ (R² = 0.996) and T₂ (R² = 0.982). MRF repeatability for T₁ values was ≤1.4% and for T₂ values was ≤3.4%.

CONCLUSION

MRF demonstrated relaxation times with a temperature dependence similar to that of conventional mapping methods. Temperature-corrected T₁ and T₂ values from both dictionaries showed adequate accuracy and excellent repeatability in this phantom study.

Automated design of pulse sequences for magnetic resonance fingerprinting using physics-inspired optimization

Magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) is a method to extract quantitative tissue properties such as [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] relaxation rates from arbitrary pulse sequences using conventional MRI hardware. MRF pulse sequences have thousands of tunable parameters, which can be chosen to maximize precision and minimize scan time. Here, we perform de novo automated design of MRF pulse sequences by applying physics-inspired optimization heuristics. Our experimental data suggest that systematic errors dominate over random errors in MRF scans under clinically relevant conditions of high undersampling. Thus, in contrast to prior optimization efforts, which focused on statistical error models, we use a cost function based on explicit first-principles simulation of systematic errors arising from Fourier undersampling and phase variation. The resulting pulse sequences display features qualitatively different from previously used MRF pulse sequences and achieve fourfold shorter scan time than prior human-designed sequences of equivalent precision in [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] Furthermore, the optimization algorithm has discovered the existence of MRF pulse sequences with intrinsic robustness against shading artifacts due to phase variation.

A parallel spatial and Bloch manifold regularized iterative reconstruction method for MR Fingerprinting

Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF) reconstructs tissue maps based on a sequence of very highly undersampled images. In order to be able to perform MRF reconstruction, state-of-the-art MRF methods rely on priors such as the MR physics (Bloch equations) and might also use some additional low-rank or spatial regularization. However to our knowledge these three regularizations are not applied together in a joint reconstruction. The reason is that it is indeed challenging to incorporate effectively multiple regularizations in a single MRF optimization algorithm. As a result most of these methods are not robust to noise especially when the sequence length is short. In this paper, we propose a family of new methods where spatial and low-rank regularizations, in addition to the Bloch manifold regularization, are applied on the images. We show on digital phantom and NIST phantom scans, as well as volunteer scans that the proposed methods bring significant improvement in the quality of the estimated tissue maps.

Confounding factors in breast magnetic resonance fingerprinting: B 1 + , slice profile, and diffusion effects

PURPOSE

Magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) offers rapid quantitative imaging but may be subject to confounding effects (CE) if these are not included in the model-based reconstruction. This study characterizes the influence of in-plane B 1 + , slice profile and diffusion effects on T₁ and T₂ estimation in the female breast at 1.5T.

METHODS

Simulations were used to predict the influence of each CE on the accuracy of MRF and to investigate the influence of electronic noise and spiral aliasing artefacts. The experimentally observed bias in regions of fibroglandular tissue (FGT) and fatty tissue (FT) was analyzed for undersampled spiral breast MRF data of 6 healthy volunteers by performing MRF reconstruction with and without a CE.

RESULTS

Theoretic analysis predicts T₁ under-/T₂ overestimation if the nominal flip angles are underestimated and inversely, T₁ under-/T₂ overestimation if omitting slice profile correction, and T₁ under-/T₂ underestimation if omitting diffusion in the signal model. Averaged over repeated signal simulations, including spiral aliasing artefacts affected precision more than accuracy. Strong in-plane B 1 + effects occurred in vivo, causing T₂ left-right inhomogeneity between both breasts. Their correction decreased the T₂ difference from 29 to 5 ms in FGT and from 29 to 9 ms in FT. Slice profile correction affected FGT T₂ most strongly, resulting in -22% smaller values. For the employed spoiler gradient strengths, diffusion did not affect the parameter maps, corresponding well with theoretic predictions.

CONCLUSION

Understanding CEs and their relative significance for an MRF sequence is important when defining an MRF signal model for accurate parameter mapping.

Variability and Standardization of Quantitative Imaging: Monoparametric to Multiparametric Quantification, Radiomics, and Artificial Intelligence

Radiological images have been assessed qualitatively in most clinical settings by the expert eyes of radiologists and other clinicians. On the other hand, quantification of radiological images has the potential to detect early disease that may be difficult to detect with human eyes, complement or replace biopsy, and provide clear differentiation of disease stage. Further, objective assessment by quantification is a prerequisite of personalized/precision medicine. This review article aims to summarize and discuss how the variability of quantitative values derived from radiological images are induced by a number of factors and how these variabilities are mitigated and standardization of the quantitative values are achieved. We discuss the variabilities of specific biomarkers derived from magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography, and focus on diffusion-weighted imaging, relaxometry, lung density evaluation, and computer-aided computed tomography volumetry. We also review the sources of variability and current efforts of standardization of the rapidly evolving techniques, which include radiomics and artificial intelligence.

Acceleration of 2D-MR fingerprinting by reducing the number of echoes with increased in-plane resolution: a volunteer study

Objective

To compare the absolute values and repeatability of magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) with 3000 and 1500 echoes/slice acquired in 41 s and 20 s (MRF3k and MRF1.5k, respectively).

Materials and methods

MRF3k and MRF1.5k scans based on fast imaging with steady precession (FISP) were conducted using a 3 T scanner. Inter-scan agreement and intra-scan repeatability were investigated in 41 and 28 subjects, respectively. Region-of-interest (ROI) analysis was conducted on T1 values of MRF3k by two raters, and their agreement was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Between MRF3k and MRF1.5k, differences in T1 and T2 values and inter-measurement correlation coefficients (CCs) were investigated. Intra-measurement repeatability was evaluated using coefficients of variation (CVs). A p value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results

The ICCs of ROI measurements were 0.77–0.96. Differences were observed between the two MRF scans, but the CCs of the overall ROIs were 0.99 and 0.97 for the T1 and T2 values, respectively. The mean and median CVs of repeatability were equal to or less than 1.58% and 3.13% in each of the ROIs for T1 and T2, respectively; there were some significant differences between MRF3k and MRF1.5k, but they were small, measuring less than 1%.

Discussion

Both MRF3k and MRF1.5k had high repeatability, and a strong to very strong correlation was observed, with a trend toward slightly higher values in MRF1.5k.

Magnetic resonance fingerprinting review part 2: Technique and directions

Magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) is a general framework to quantify multiple MR-sensitive tissue properties with a single acquisition. There have been numerous advances in MRF in the years since its inception. In this work we highlight some of the recent technical developments in MRF, focusing on sequence optimization, modifications for reconstruction and pattern matching, new methods for partial volume analysis, and applications of machine and deep learning. MRF-ZOOM for the unbalanced steady-state free precession (ubSSFP) magnetic resonance fingerprinting

In magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF), tissue parameters are determined by finding the best-match to the acquired MR signal from a predefined signal dictionary. This dictionary searching (DS) process is generally performed in an exhaustive manner, which requires a large predefined dictionary and long searching time. A fast MRF DS algorithm, MRF-ZOOM, was recently proposed based on DS objective function optimization. As a proof-of-concept study, MRF-ZOOM was only tested with one of the earliest MRF sequences but not with the recently more popular unbalanced steady state free precession MRF sequence (MRF-ubSSFP, or MRF-FISP). Meanwhile noise effects on MRF and MRF-ZOOM have not been examined. The purpose of this study was to address these open questions and to verify whether MRF-ZOOM can be combined with a dictionary-compression based method to gain further speed. Numerical simulations were performed to evaluate the DS objective function properties, noise effects on MRF, and to compare MRF-ZOOM with other methods in terms of speed and accuracy. In-vivo experiments were performed as well. Evaluation results showed that premises of MRF-ZOOM held for MRF-FISP; noise did not affect MRF-ZOOM more than the conventional MRF method; when SNR ≥ 1, MRF quantification yielded accurate results. Dictionary compression introduced quantification errors more to T2 quantification. MRF-ZOOM was thousands of times faster than the conventional MRF method. Combining MRF-ZOOM with dictionary compression showed no benefit in terms of fitting speed. In conclusion, MRF-ZOOM is valid for MRF- FISP, and can remarkably save MRF dictionary generation and searching time without sacrificing matching accuracy.

Comprehensive Evaluation of B1+-corrected FISP-based Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting: Accuracy, Repeatability and Reproducibility of T1 and T2 Relaxation Times for ISMRM/NIST System Phantom and Volunteers

Purpose:

This study aimed to evaluate comprehensively; accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility of T₁ and T₂ relaxation times measured by magnetic resonance fingerprinting using B1+-corrected fast imaging with steady-state precession (FISP–MRF).

Methods:

The International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine/National Institute of Standards and Technology (ISMRM/NIST) phantom was scanned for 100 days, and six healthy volunteers for 5 days using a FISP–MRF prototype sequence. Accuracy was evaluated on the phantom by comparing relaxation times measured by FISP–MRF with the reference values provided by the phantom manufacturer. Daily repeatability was characterized as the coefficient of variation (CV) of the measurements over 100 days for the phantom and over 5 days for volunteers. In addition, the cross-scanner reproducibility was evaluated in volunteers.

Results:

In the phantom study, T₁ and T₂ values from FISP–MRF showed a strong linear correlation with the reference values of the phantom (R² = 0.9963 for T₁; R² = 0.9966 for T₂). CVs were <1.0% for T₁ values larger than 300 ms, and <3.0% for T₂ values across a wide range. In the volunteer study, CVs for both T₁ and T₂ values were <5.0%, except for one subject. In addition, all T₂ values estimated by FISP–MRF in vivo were lower than those measured with conventional mapping sequences reported in previous studies. The cross-scanner variation of T₁ and T₂ showed good agreement between two different scanners in the volunteers.

Conclusion:

B1+-corrected FISP-MRF showed an acceptable accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility in the phantom and volunteer studies.

Reproducibility and Repeatability of MR Fingerprinting Relaxometry in the Human Brain

Background Only sparse literature investigates the reproducibility and repeatability of relaxometry methods in MRI. However, statistical data on reproducibility and repeatability of any quantitative method is essential for clinical application. Purpose To evaluate the reproducibility and repeatability of two-dimensional fast imaging with steady-state free precession MR fingerprinting in vivo in human brains. Materials and Methods Two-dimensional section-selective MR fingerprinting based on a steady-state free precession sequence with an external radiofrequency transmit field, or B₁⁺, correction was used to generate T1 and T2 maps. This prospective study was conducted between July 2017 and January 2018 with 10 scanners from a single manufacturer, including different models, at four different sites. T1 and T2 relaxation times and their variation across scanners (reproducibility) as well as across repetitions on a scanner (repeatability) were analyzed. The relative deviations of T1 and T2 to the average (95% confidence interval) were calculated for several brain compartments. Results Ten healthy volunteers (mean age ± standard deviation, 28.5 years ± 6.9; eight men, two women) participated in this study. Reproducibility and repeatability of T1 and T2 measures in the human brain varied across brain compartments (1.8%-20.9%) and were higher in solid tissues than in the cerebrospinal fluid. T1 measures in solid tissue brain compartments were more stable compared with T2 measures. The half-widths of the confidence intervals for relative deviations were 3.4% for mean T1 and 8.0% for mean T2 values across scanners. Intrascanner repeatability half-widths of the confidence intervals for relative deviations were in the range of 2.0%-3.1% for T1 and 3.1%-7.9% for T2. Conclusion This study provides values on reproducibility and repeatability of T1 and T2 relaxometry measured with fast imaging with steady-state free precession MR fingerprinting in brain tissues of healthy volunteers. Reproducibility and repeatability are considerably higher in solid brain compartments than in cerebrospinal fluid and are higher for T1 than for T2. © RSNA, 2019 Online supplemental material is available for this article. Partial volume mapping using magnetic resonance fingerprinting

Magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) is a quantitative imaging technique that maps multiple tissue properties through pseudorandom signal excitation and dictionary-based reconstruction. The aim of this study is to estimate and validate partial volumes from MRF signal evolutions (PV-MRF), and to characterize possible sources of error. Partial volume model inversion (pseudoinverse) and dictionary-matching approaches to calculate brain tissue fractions (cerebrospinal fluid, gray matter, white matter) were compared in a numerical phantom and seven healthy subjects scanned at 3 T. Results were validated by comparison with ground truth in simulations and ROI analysis in vivo. Simulations investigated tissue fraction errors arising from noise, undersampling artifacts, and model errors. An expanded partial volume model was investigated in a brain tumor patient. PV-MRF with dictionary matching is robust to noise, and estimated tissue fractions are sensitive to model errors. A 6% error in pure tissue T₁ resulted in average absolute tissue fraction error of 4% or less. A partial volume model within these accuracy limits could be semi-automatically constructed in vivo using k-means clustering of MRF-mapped relaxation times. Dictionary-based PV-MRF robustly identifies pure white matter, gray matter and cerebrospinal fluid, and partial volumes in subcortical structures. PV-MRF could also estimate partial volumes of solid tumor and peritumoral edema. We conclude that PV-MRF can attribute subtle changes in relaxation times to altered tissue composition, allowing for quantification of specific tissues which occupy a fraction of a voxel.
