Abstract
Herein, NiO nanoparticles (NPs) functionalized with a para-hexanitrocalix[6]arene derivative (p-HNC6/NiO) were synthesized by using a facile method and applied as a selective electrochemical sensor for the determination of bisphenol S (BPS) in real samples. Moreover, the functional interactions, phase purities, surface morphologies and elemental compositions of the synthesized p-HNC6/NiO NPs were investigated via advanced analytical tools, such as Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Additionally, the synthesized p-HNC6/NiO NPs were cast on the surface of a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) via a drop casting method, which resulted in uniform deposition of p-HNC6/NiO/GCE over the surface of the GCE. Additionally, the developed p-HNC6/NiO/GCE sensor demonstrated an outstanding electrochemical response to BPS under optimized conditions, including a supporting electrolyte, a Briton-Robinson buffer electrolyte at pH 4, a scan rate of 110 mV s-1 and a potential window of between -0.2 and 1.0 V. The wide linear dynamic range was optimized to 0.8-70 μM to obtain a brilliant linear calibration curve for BPS. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of the developed sensor were estimated to be 0.0059 and 0.019 μM, respectively, which are lower than those of reported sensors for BPS. The feasibility of the developed method was successfully assessed by analyzing the content of BPS in waste water samples, and good recoveries were achieved.

Abstract
A new fluorogenic anthracene functionalized calix[4]triazacrown-5 (Ant-AzClx) was successfully synthesized using a simple Schiff's base reaction. The 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, ESI-MS, and elemental analysis techniques were performed to characterize its structure. Excited at 370 nm, Ant-AzClx reveals excimer emission at 418 nm. Therefore, its anion binding properties were investigated against F- , HCO3 - , H2 PO4 - , NO3 - , Cr2 O7 2- , and SO4 2- ions. When hazardous dichromate anion was introduced into medium, the fluorescence intensity of Ant-AzClx was markedly quenched. The binding constant, stoichiometry, the detection limits and Stern-Volmer equation for the complex formed between Ant-AzClx and Cr2 O7 2- ion were determined. Furthermore, the 1 H-NMR technique was also performed to assess the mechanism of the complex (Ant-AzClx@Cr2 O7 2- ). Apart from its excellent fluorescent chemosensor properties for selective and sensitive recognition of Cr2 O7 2- ion, Ant-AzClx was used as an efficient extractant towards dichromate anion. The extraction results indicated that Ant-AzClx exhibited high extraction capability, leading to it being a promising extractant for the removal of dichromate anions from water.

Abstract
Calixarene framework functionalized bio-polymeric magnetic composites (MSp-TDI-calix) were synthesized and utilized as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) sorbent for the extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), namely indoprofen (INP), ketoprofen (KTP), ibuprofen (IBP) and fenoprofen (FNP), from environmental water samples. MSp-TDI-calix was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, EDX, VSM and BET analysis, and the results were compared with Sp-TDI and Sp-TDI-calix. To maximize the extraction performance of MSp-TDI-calix decisive MSPE affective parameters such as sorbent amount, extraction time, sample volume, type of organic eluent, volume of organic eluent, desorption time and pH were comprehensively optimized prior to HPLC-DAD determination. The analytical validity of the proposed MSPE method was evaluated under optimized conditions and the following figures of merit were acquired: linearity with good determination coefficient (R2 ≥ 0.991) over the concentration range of 0.5–500 µg/L, limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.06–0.26 µg/L and limits of quantitation (LOQ) between 0.20–0.89 µg/L. Excellent reproducibility and repeatability under harsh environment with inter-day and intra-day relative standard deviations were obtained in the range of 2.5–3.2% and 2.4–3.9% respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied for analysis of NSAIDs in tap water, drinking water and river water with recovery efficiency ranging from 88.1–115.8% with %RSD of 1.6–4.6%.

Abstract
Calixarenes are considered as third generation supramolecules with hollow cavity-like architecture whereas nanoparticles are small entities with dimensions in the nanoscale. Many exciting achievements are seen when the calix system merges with nanoparticles which produces many fascinating facets in all fields of contemporary chemistry. The properties of nanoparticles which are tuned by calixarenes find applications in sensing, catalysis, molecular recognition, etc. Here, we have reviewed the chemistry of calix-based nanoparticles, and emphasis is laid on the modified, reducing, templated and stabilizing roles of calixarenes. This review covers the research being carried out in the domain of calix protected metal nanoparticles during last 18 years under the canopy of important 109 references. This article contains 58 figures which include 81 easy to understand structures. Calix-protected nanoparticles have enthralled researchers in the field of nanoscience with a tremendous growth in its applications, which heralds much promise to become in future a separate area of research.

Abstract
Three organic ionophores (2-4) based on the p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene backbone, blocked in the 1,3-alternate conformation, bearing two pyridyl coordinating moieties (ortho for 2, meta for 3 and para for 4), have been synthesized and characterized in the solid state. The solvent extraction experiments with the metal ions showed that the ability of these derivatives to complex with Ag(+) appeared to be largely dependent on the position of the nitrogen atoms of the pyridyl ring. Two different complexation modes have been confirmed by 1H NMR titration. Ionophore 2 armed with two pyridyl moieties, complexed with Ag(+) cation through N···Ag(+)···S interactions; however, ionophore 3 and ionophore 4 complexed with Ag(+) through metal-nitrogen (N···Ag(+)) interactions. The DFT computational studies were consistent with the experimental findings. These findings will provide us with an important rule to design an appropriate thiacalix[4]arene ionophore in the future. Another study on the possibility for application of ionophores 2-4 for the treatment of waste water containing Cr(VI) and Cr(III), showed that ionophore 3 was useful in the application of the solvent extraction method in selective treatment of waste water containing Cr(VI) and Cr(III) prior to discharge.
