Abstract
Shikimic acid (SA) is one of the most effective drugs against the A (H1N1) virus and has high medicinal value. Additionally, it has the ability to generate non-toxic herbicides and antimicrobial medications. The extraction from plants has proven to be the main route of production of SA with economic benefits and environmental efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to perform purification of SA from these herbal medicines before quantifying it. In this study, researchers employed a boronate affinity-based controlled oriented surface imprinting technique to produce molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as highly effective solid phase extraction (SPE) adsorbents for the isolation and purification of SA. 3-Fluoro-4-formylphenylboronic acid functionalized silica nanoparticles were used as supporting materials for immobilizing SA. Poly(2-anilinoethanol) with a higher hydrophilic domain can be used as an effective imprinting coating. The prepared SA-imprinted silica nanoparticles exhibited several significant results, such as good specificity, high binding capacity (39.06 ± 2.24 mg g-1), moderate binding constant (6.61 × 10-4 M-1), fast kinetics (8 min) and low binding pH (pH 5.0) toward SA. The replication of SA-imprinted silica nanoparticles was deemed satisfactory. The SA-imprinted silica nanoparticles could be still reused after seven adsorption-desorption cycles, which indicated high chemical stability. In addition, the recoveries of the proposed method for SA at three spiked level analysis in star aniseed and meadow cranesbill were 96.2% to 109.0% and 91.6% to 103.5%, respectively. The SA-imprinted silica nanoparticles that have been prepared are capable of identifying the target SA in real herbal medicines. Our approach makes sample pre-preparation simple, fast, selective and efficient.

Abstract
Ti3C2Tx (MXene) has attracted extensive attention from scholars at home and abroad due to its rich surface termination functional groups and two-dimensional multilayer structure. In this work, MXene was introduced to the membrane by vacuum-assisted filtration processes, and the formed interlayer channel facilitated the construction of recognition sites and molecular transmission. In this paper, PDA@MXene@PDA@SiO2-PVDF dual-imprinted mixed matrix membrane (PMS-DIMs) were developed by the cooperative dual-imprinting strategy, which was used for the adsorption of shikimic acid (SA). Firstly, SiO2-PVDF nanofiber basement membrane were prepared by electrospinning method and the first Polydopamine (PDA)-based imprinted layer was constructed on the membrane. PDA not only realized the imprinting process, PDA modification was used to give MXene nanosheets better antioxidant properties and to confer the SiO2-PVDF nanofiber membrane the interface stability. After that, the second-imprinted sites were constructed on the stacked MXene nanosheets surface as well as between the layers. The SA dual-imprinted sites significantly increased the efficiency of the selective adsorption efficiency, when the template molecule passed through the membrane, the cooperative dual-imprinting strategy enabled multiplex recognition and adsorption of template molecules. As a consequence, which greatly improving the rebinding ability(262.17 g m-2), and mselectivity factors (βCatechol/SA, βP-HB/SA, βP-NP/SA were 2.34, 4.50 and 5.68). High stability proved the potentials of the PMS-DIMs for practical application. Precise SA-recognition sites were constructed on the PMS-DIMs, PMS-DIMs not only exhibit excellent selective rebinding properties but also have high permeability.

Abstract
Poly(3-methacrylamido propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) (PMAPTAC) is a typical cationic water-soluble polyelectrolyte, which has been widely used in petroleum, papermaking, daily cosmetics and other fields in the form of an aqueous solution. However, the acid–base and thermal stability of PMAPTAC in aqueous solution have not been reported yet, which hinders its further application in high-temperature and acid–base environments. To address these deficiencies, the effects of temperature and pH of PMAPTAC with different intrinsic viscosities on its hydrolysis stability were investigated qualitatively and quantitatively, and the hydrolysis mechanism was studied. Firstly, the qualitative analysis showed that the apparent viscosity of the PMAPTAC solution decreased with hydrolysis time at different temperatures and pH. The higher the temperature and the lower the pH, the greater the viscosity loss of PMAPTAC. The quantitative analysis showed that the hydrolysis rate of the PMAPTAC sample solution increased with the increase in temperature and pH. In addition, the intrinsic viscosity of PMAPTAC samples had little effect on the hydrolytic stability of PMAPTAC. Secondly, by analyzing the viscosity curves at different pH and temperatures by Arrhenius analysis, the Arrhenius equations were found to be 1/τ = 200.34e^((−25.04)/RT), 1/τ = 9127.07e^((−38.90)/RT) and 1/τ = 4683.03e^((−39.89)/RT) for pH 3, pH 7 and pH 11, respectively. Thirdly, the hydrolysis rate of PDMC was the fastest under alkaline conditions. In addition, compared with PDMC, PMAPTAC had better hydrolysis stability under the same conditions. Finally, the mechanism of the hydrolyzed polymer was studied by FTIR and 13CNMR, which showed that the carbonyl group of PMAPTAC was hydrolyzed into a carboxyl group, and the small molecule (3-aminopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride was generated, while the ester group of PDMC was hydrolyzed into a carboxyl group, and choline chloride was released. The above results can provide a theoretical basis for the application of PMAPTAC in some high-temperature and acid–base environments.

Abstract
Electrospun micro-/nanofibers with tailor-made specific binding sites are extremely popular due to their tremendous potential in separation applications. In this work, teamed boronate affinity (TBA)-functionalized molecularly imprinted hollow carbon electrospun nanofibers (MI-HCESNFs) derived from ZIF-8/PAN fibers with selective binding sites toward shikimic acid (SA) are presented. Each ingredient used in this strategy plays its own part: HCESNFs with excellent structural characteristics as the highly porous electrospun substrate, KH560 as the grafting material for the follow-up polyethyleneimine (PEI) modification, PEI as the dendritic platform to approach more boronic acid owing to its long chain with abundant amino groups, and TBA molecular group as the functional monomer to specifically bind with SA under the neutral condition. Benefiting from the porous structure, the high density of boronic acid, and the highly accessible imprinted sites on the surface, MI-HCESNFs show strong affinity and selectivity to the SA molecules. The adsorption capacity of MI-HCESNFs can reach 127.8 mg g-1, which is 3.1 times larger than that of the non-imprinted material. Besides, MI-HCESNFs are stable when treated with continuous ultrasonication and can be recycled eight times with a slight loss of 8.615% on the adsorption quantity. This work presents a new strategy to prepare boronate affinity adsorbents based on the electrospinning technique for the capture of SA and also proposes a path for the integration of molecularly imprinted polymers and electrospinning.

Abstract
Cellulose acetate membrane (CAM) has become one of the most widely used membrane materials by virtue of stability and hydrophilicity. In this work, to achieve the aim of selective recognition and separation of drug molecule shikimic acid (SA), an effective recognition tactics was proposed by combining boron affinity technology with surface imprinting strategy based on cellulose acetate membrane with low price and biocompatibility. The supporting CAM material was prepared through the phase inversion technique by continuous adjustment of different factors including solvent type and kinds of pore-forming agents, and the optimal CAM with multistage structure and highly porosity was applied for the imprinting of SA. Then the imprinted polymer membrane (MIPs-CAM) was developed via boron affinity surface imprinting polymerization. Various methods (FT-IR, UV-vis, SEM, XPS, AFM and TGA) were used to characterize the structure, morphology, elemental composition, surface roughness and thermal property of the obtained membrane. The as-prepared MIPs-CAM showed homogeneous and abundant imprinted layer, good thermal stability. The batch adsorption results showed that the MIPs-CAM had fast adsorption kinetics, specific recognition ability, and the adsorption capacity could obtain 63.598 mg g-1, which was two times higher than that of non-imprinted membrane (NIPs-CAM). The adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir isotherm and the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of MIPs-CAM still reached 85% of the initial result after five cycles. The experimental results revealed that the molecularly imprinted membrane possessed the advantages of high selectivity and easy recovery compared with the traditional molecular imprinted polymers for SA separation. These results indicate that boron affinity MIPs-CAM with high performance will provide a promising platform for the separation and purification of other cis-diol drug molecules from environmental resources.

Abstract
Developing robust and effective adsorbent for removing ubiquitous pharmaceutical diclofenac (DCF) from the aquatic environment is vitally important for environmental safety. Hence, a novel chitosan-based multilayer adsorbent (FCS-PD) with magnetic separation ability and surface functionality was successfully assembled, which had countless potential for removing contaminants from water. A series of instrumental technologies were performed to demonstrate the physicochemical properties of FCS-PD. Its adsorption performance toward DCF removal was comprehensively evaluated in synthetic water and surface water. The effects of microplastics, inorganic ions and humic acid on the adsorption were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of FCS-PD was calculated as 434.78 mg/g under neutral conditions, exhibiting superior adsorption performance than most reported adsorbents. The DCF in surface water was practically removed at low concentration (50 μg/L). FCS-PD presented a multistage kinetics controlled by chemisorption and intraparticle diffusion, which was emphasized by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and intra-particle diffusion analysis. After five cycles of adsorption and regeneration, the adsorption capacity only decreased by 9.9%, indicating the satisfactory regeneration of FCS-PD. The analysis of high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that the quaternary ammonium groups on the outer layer and the amino and hydroxyl groups on the chitosan layer are involved in the capture of DCF under electrostatic force and hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
A hydrophobically associating cationic polyacrylamide (HACPAM) was prepared by using a micellar polymerization method with V-50 (azobisisobutyramidine hydrochloride) as the initiator and acrylamide, acryloyloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride and butyl methacrylate as substrates under ultraviolet light irradiation. Structural analysis using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses showed that the substrates were successfully polymerized. HACPAM was used to condition sludge to improve its dewatering performance, and the results showed that as the amount of HACPAM increases, the sludge dewatering performance is significantly improved, and 3.532 kg/t dry solids of HACPAM is regarded as the optimal amount. Compared with the commercially available cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), HACPAM has a stronger hydrophobic group association effect, with better promotion of the conversion of bound water in sludge flocs into free water, thereby improving the sewage dewatering performance. The 3D spatial structure of dewatered sludge cakes analyzed by computed tomography technology showed that the number of pores of the dewatered sludge cake treated by HACPAM 3 was smaller than that of the cake treated by CPAM, with a reduction in the porosity of 68.8%, resulting in a better hydrophobic effect. In addition, the mechanism of HACPAM improving the dewatering performance is discussed.

Abstract
Shikimic acid is a natural product of industrial importance utilized as a precursor of the antiviral Tamiflu. It is nowadays produced in multihundred ton amounts from the extraction of star anise ( Illicium verum) or by fermentation processes. Apart from the production of Tamiflu, shikimic acid has gathered particular notoriety as its useful carbon backbone and inherent chirality provide extensive use as a versatile chiral precursor in organic synthesis. This review provides an overview of the main synthetic and microbial methods for production of shikimic acid and highlights selected methods for isolation from available plant sources. Furthermore, we have attempted to demonstrate the synthetic utility of shikimic acid by covering the most important synthetic modifications and related applications, namely, synthesis of Tamiflu and derivatives, synthetic manipulations of the main functional groups, and its use as biorenewable material and in total synthesis. Given its rich chemistry and availability, shikimic acid is undoubtedly a promising platform molecule for further exploration. Therefore, in the end, we outline some challenges and promising future directions.

Abstract
This paper describes the preparation of zwitterion-functionalized polymer microspheres (ZPMs) and their application to simultaneous enrichment of V(V), Cr(III), As(III), Sn(IV), Sb(III) and Hg(II) from environmental water samples. The ZPMs were prepared by emulsion copolymerization of ethyl methacrylate, 2-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate and triethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate followed by modification with 1,3-propanesultone. The components were analyzed by elemental analyses as well as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The ZPMs were packed into a mini-column for on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) of the above metal ions. Following extraction with 40 mM NH4NO3 and 0.5 M HNO3 solution, the ions were quantified by ICP-MS. Under the optimized conditions, the enrichment factors (from a 40 mL sample) are up to 60 for the ions V(V), As(III), Sb(III) and Hg(II), and 55 for Cr(III) and Sn(IV). The detection limits are 1.2, 3.4, 1.0, 3.7, 2.1 and 1.6 ng L-1 for V(V), Cr(III), As(III), Sn(IV), Sb(III) and Hg(II), respectively, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) are below 5.2%. The feasibility and accuracy of the method were validated by successfully analyzing six certified reference materials as well as lake, well and river waters. Graphical abstract Zwitterion-functionalized polymer microspheres (ZPMs) were prepared and packed into a mini-column for on-line solid-phase extraction (SPE) via pump 1. Then V(V), Cr(III), As(III), Sn(IV), Sb(III) and Hg(II) ions in environmental waters were eluted and submitted to ICP-MS via pump 2.
