Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is a lack of synthesized knowledge on nursing students self-directed learning in bioscience and how to best support students' learning in this subject. The purpose of this integrative review is to synthesize current literature on perspectives on self-directed learning among nursing students studying bioscience to guide further research aiming to support students' learning more effectively. METHODS An integrative review in line with Whittemore & Knafl's modified framework containing five stages: problem identification, literature search, data evaluation, data analysis and presentation. A structured literature search was undertaken in the Web of Science, ERIC, Medline and CINAHL databases from November 2022 to January 2023. The inclusion criteria were nursing students enrolled in a bachelor programme, research addressing activities intended for learning bioscience, in addition to formal taught lectures and perspectives on self-directed learning in natural science subjects within nurse education such as views, actions, activities, habits and attitudes. Exclusion criteria were students in other education programs, research in formal learning contexts, and self-directed learning in other subjects than natural science subjects. Rigour of each included source was assessed using Whittemore & Knafl's suggested 2-point scale (high or low). A constant comparison method was used to synthesize results. RESULTS Of the initial 1143 sources, 12 articles were included after abstract and full-text screening: one pilot study for randomized controlled trial, one qualitative study, two mixed methods studies and eight quantitative studies. The sample size was from 23 to 563 participants. DISCUSSION This review identifies self-directed learning in bioscience understood as a continuum of teacher-directedness and self-directedness rather than as distinguished orientations. There seem to be no consistent definition of self-directed learning in bioscience, yet descriptions commonly imply metacognitive learning approaches. Nursing students value digital learning resources, yet technology might be secondary to the skill of self-directed learning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bioscience subjects are essential as they allow nurses to have a clear understanding of the patient's condition and ultimately allow them to provide appropriate and timeous care. However, these subjects remain a significant problem in the endeavour to produce highly competent nurses. AIM The study aimed to investigate the nursing students' self-reported depth of understanding of bioscience and its relevance to clinical practice. METHODS A quantitative research approach using a descriptive survey design was employed. The sample (n = 211) included second-, third- and fourth-year undergraduate nursing students. A three-part self-administered questionnaire was adapted and used to collect the data. Data were analysed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences software version 25.0 (IBM SPSS-25). Descriptive statistics and Chi-squared test were performed to describe the relationship among the study variables. RESULTS Participants rated their understanding of the application of Human Biology (n = 86, 40.76%) and Pharmacology (n = 88, 41.71%) as good, while Physics (n = 80, 37.91%) and Chemistry (n = 85, 40.28%) were rated as adequate. Most participants rated Human Biology (n = 175, 83.73%) and Pharmacology (n = 181, 86.19%) as essential, while Physics (n = 129, 61.72%) and Chemistry (n = 133, 63.64%) were rated as relevant to clinical practice. Physics (n = 112, 60.54%; n = 95, 50.53%) and Chemistry (n = 126, 68.85%; n = 113 61.41%) were rated as not relevant to monitoring a patient's heart rate and blood pressure. Participants' perception of the relevance of Chemistry in monitoring a patient's blood pressure was statistically significant (χ2 = 6.871 (df 2), p<0.05). Most participants (n = 57, 41.91%) performed at Task specific on Akinsanya's Bionursing model, suggesting an overall understanding of the foundational concepts and principles of bioscience. CONCLUSION The findings of the study provided evidence of the students' self-reported depth of understanding and perception of the relevance of bioscience and indicate a need for more emphasis on the importance of bioscience integration in clinical practice.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study is to explore the effects of integrating bioscience and nursing units on academic achievement and perception in the first-year nursing curriculum. BACKGROUND Nursing students have historically found biosciences difficult and struggle to relate it to nursing practice. In response, nursing and non-nursing academics have employed different teaching modes and integration strategies to enhance learning. Despite these efforts, substantial gaps still persist concerning the integration of biosciences within nursing curriculum and the effect of integration on student academic achievement and student perception. DESIGN Retrospective descriptive. The setting was a large University in Victoria Australia with two undergraduate nursing campuses (metropolitan and non-metropolitan). METHOD Student academic records and online evaluation surveys that were completed from 2014 to 2019 were examined. Students self-reported their experiences of the unit using a five-point Likert scale and two open-ended questions. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Content analysis was used to analyse the two open-response survey items. RESULTS First-year student records from 2014 to 2016 (pre-integration) and 2017-2019 (post-integration) were examined. Student mean age was 24.5 years (SD 7.2) and 20.9 years (SD 4.8) pre-integration and post-integration respectively. There was a statistically significant decrease in student attrition from pre-integration (n=536, 29.9%) to post-integration (n=358, 20.2%) (p <0.001), and a significant improvement in students' mean academic scores post-integration in the first semester 61.9 (SD 15.9) and 67.0 (SD 14.9) respectively, confidence interval 3.9-6.2 (p <0.001). Student satisfaction with the units improved post-integration, from 77.8% to 85.8% (χ2 = 10.1076) (p=0.001). However, there was no significant difference in students' perception of feeling overwhelmed, and their self-reported ability to link theory to practice. CONCLUSION Integrating bioscience and clinical nursing practice units in the first-year curriculum can help decrease student attrition rates, improve student academic results and increase student satisfaction which may lead to an overall improvement in student learning experiences.

Abstract
Cancer rates are increasing, and more people are living with cancer and its consequences. Healthcare students will be caring for people affected by cancer in all clinical contexts. However, pre-registration programmes can include limited cancer education and not all students will have the opportunity for a clinical placement in a cancer setting. This can result in healthcare students feeling unprepared to care for people affected by cancer. To address this need, nine e-learning modules, collectively called The Foundations of Cancer Care, have been developed to support students' knowledge, understanding and confidence about cancer. This article outlines the development and peer review of The Foundations of Cancer Care. The resultant modules are freely available to all those with an Open Athens account or NHS or UK university email address via the NHS Learning Hub (https://learninghub.nhs.uk).

Abstract
(1) Background: There are considerable challenges and concerns related to learning medical and bioscience subjects (MBS) in nursing education and integrating this knowledge into nursing. The aim of this study was to explore what learning methods nursing students prefer when studying MBS, and how this learning may be enhanced to facilitate the integration of these subjects into nursing. (2) Methods: Individual interviews with 10 nursing students. Transcripts from the interviews were analysed by systematic text condensation and the COREQ checklist for qualitative studies was completed. (3) Results: Students prefer varied and active learning methods in MBS. The participants in the study highlighted both organised tutorials in groups and working with fellow students outside of organised teaching. All participants used educational videos. Learning MBS by drawing was appreciated both during lectures and in student-initiated colloquia. Strategies that favour in-depth learning were appreciated, and it was found that lectures did not have to cover the entire curriculum. Teachers' attitudes toward students also were seen to have a considerable impact on students' motivation for learning. (4) Conclusion: Applying active learning methods and focusing on the most relevant topics in MBS appears to improve students' ability to integrate this knowledge into nursing; teachers should also be aware of their role as a motivator.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Developing evaluative measures that assess clinical reasoning remains a major challenge for nursing education. A thorough understanding of biosciences underpins much of nursing practice and is essential to allow nurses to reason effectively. A gap in clinical reasoning can lead to unintended harm. The Script Concordance test holds promise as a measure of clinical reasoning in the context of uncertainty, situations common in nursing practice. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a test for first year undergraduate nursing students that will evaluate how bioscience knowledge is used to clinically reason. METHODS An international team, teaching biosciences to undergraduate nurses constructed a test integrating common clinical cases with a series of related test items: diagnostic, investigative and treatment. An expert panel (n = 10) took the test and commented on authenticity/ambiguities/omissions etc. This step is crucial for validity and for scoring of the student test. The test was administered to 47 first year undergraduate nursing students from the author sites. Students rated educational aspects of the tool both quantitatively and qualitatively. Statistical and content analyses inform the findings. FINDINGS Results indicate that the test is reliable and valid, differentiating between experts and students. Students demonstrated an ability to identify relevant data, link this to their bioscience content and predict outcomes (mean score = 50.78 ± 8.89). However, they lacked confidence in their answers when the scenarios appeared incomplete to them. CONCLUSION Nursing practice is dependent on a thorough understanding of biosciences and the ability to clinically reason. Script concordance tests can be used to promote both competencies. This method of evaluation goes further than probing factual knowledge. It also explores capacities of data interpretation, critical analysis, and clinical reasoning. Evaluating bioscience knowledge and real-world situations encountered in practice is a unique strength of this test.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To systematically identify, appraise and summarise available evidence related to the horizontal integration of bioscience and nursing in first-year nursing curricula; to examine students', nurses' and academics' perceptions of the integration and provide recommendations for future curriculum development, practice and research priorities. DESIGN A systematic review. DATA SOURCES An online search of Ovid Medline, Ovid Emcare, CINAHL, Embase Classic + and Embase, ERIC, A+Education, Scopus (Elsevier) and Google Scholar was conducted between July and September 2021. A manual search of the reference list of included articles was also undertaken. REVIEW METHODS This systematic review followed The PRISMA Statement. The study selection process was managed using the Covidence software platform and quality was assessed using JBI Critical appraisal tools and Mixed Methods Appraisal tools. A narrative synthesis of included studies was undertaken. RESULTS Six articles were identified which met the inclusion criteria. The study population included students, academics and registered nurses. Four studies used clinical scenarios as a method of horizontally integrating bioscience and nursing content. The integration outcomes were measured by student understanding and learning, satisfaction and motivation. Students', nurses' and academics' perceptions of integration challenges were: i) depth of bioscience content; ii) structure of bioscience content; and iii) knowledge and experience. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review did not identify a wide range of methods to integrate bioscience in first year nursing curricula. The use of clinical scenarios increased student understanding and learning. However, teaching academics needed to be cognizant of both nursing and bioscience to achieve the required depth of bioscience content and demonstrate integration of bioscience in nursing practice. There is a need for further investigations of methods of horizontal integration of bioscience and nursing in the first-year nursing curricula.

Abstract
BACKGROUND acquisition of bioscience knowledge is challenging for nursing students. This calls for teaching methodologies that allow them to acquire this knowledge and add value in the nursing context. OBJECTIVE to evaluate a teaching experience using a movie clip and the collaborative use of C-Maps in first-year bioscience learning in nursing students. DESIGN embedded mixed methods study. PARTICIPANTS 143 students. METHODS data were collected in two phases: first, collecting quantitative data through a questionnaire on utility, satisfaction and perceived competency development, and collecting qualitative data on learning, teaching materials and developed competencies through an open-question instrument. The second phase consisted of a focus group to explore in greater depth learning experience. RESULTS six themes emerged from the qualitative analysis: using C-Maps as a learning process; developing group competencies; knowledge integration and transfer; teacher-student relationship; art as a didactic support; and difficulties encountered and proposals for improvement. Regarding utility, the students highlighted learning and relating concepts. Elements of satisfaction were working in small groups and having the teacher as a guide. Finally, the competencies most developed were teamwork and learning ability. CONCLUSION the combination of a movie clip and a C-Map is an innovative strategy motivating and valuable for learning biosciences.
