Computational thinking and programming with Arduino in education: A systematic review for secondary education

The development of programming skills and computational thinking in the formal educational context is one of the most recent horizons set by many educational systems worldwide. Although the first computational thinking initiatives are being applied from the earliest school ages, this research focuses on the secondary education level. Specifically, the objective is the following: to analyse the implementation of Arduino, as well as the benefits and opportunities it brings to secondary school students. For this purpose, documentary research has been undertaken applying a systematic review according to the PRISMA 2020 framework following the PiCoS strategy. Atlas.ti 9 was used to analyse the information. Out of 316 papers identified, 37 were included in the research. In relation to the results, Arduino is primarily used in technology and physics subjects, although it is also used to develop interdisciplinary STEAM projects. As a rule, it is used to learn programming languages, but likewise as a resource to develop science experiments. LED lights, servomotors and breadboards are among the most commonly used resources together with the Arduino board. and Scratch was the most widely used software. The initiatives implemented have yielded both positive and negative results, for example, one drawback is that some projects are very difficult, and some achievements such as: increased motivation towards the contents addressed or also the development of some soft skills, such as problem solving.

Virtual Active Learning to Maximize Knowledge Acquisition in Nursing Students: A Comparative Study

BACKGROUND

Nursing students need to acquire knowledge through active methods that promote critical thinking and decision making. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether there are differences in the acquisition of knowledge by nursing students between active face-to-face or virtual teaching methods.

METHODS

In this comparative study, nursing students enrolled in the psychology course were divided into two groups: a face-to-face group that received active teaching methods and a virtual group. The virtual group was exposed to the Effective Learning Strategy (ELS), which included seminars based on video content through the Virtual Campus and answering questions using the H5P tool. In addition, participants engaged in reflection tasks on the content. Covariate data were collected, and knowledge tests were administered to both groups before and after the course. After three months, subjects were re-evaluated with a final exam to assess content retention.

RESULTS

A total of 280 students were randomized. No differences were found in students' scores at the end of the knowledge test or in their final grades in the subject. Having study habits (b = 0.12, p = 0.03) and social support from relevant people (b = 0.09; p = 0.03) were associated with better post-intervention scores, and inversely with social support from friends (b = -0.12, p < 0.01). Final grades were inversely associated with digital safety literacy (b = -0.101, p = 0.01). No factors were associated with the scores of each group separately.

CONCLUSIONS

The ELS virtual active learning model is as effective as face-to-face active learning methods for teaching psychology to first-year nursing students. This study was not registered.

Perceived contribution of a hybrid serious game to the development of collaborative problem solving among undergraduate nursing students: A mixed method design

BACKGROUND

Community health nurses collaborate in teams to address client care, organise services, and conduct preventive activities. Hence, it is crucial for students in this work context, to practise and enhance their collaborative problem-solving (CPS) skills. To facilitate this, a hybrid serious game called "Carion" was developed, immersing second-year nursing students in a semester-long experience of working as district nurses in self-managed teams. The game challenges them to collectively tackle authentic and fictional problems. However, the extent and manner in which this hybrid serious game contributes to students' CPS skill development is unknown.

AIM

The aim of this study is to explore how students perceive the development of CPS by doing assignments carried out in the learning context of the hybrid serious game Carion.

PARTICIPANTS

Two teams each consisting of five second-year nursing students, were selected for the qualitative case study. Two lecturers acting as team coaches also participated in this study. 110 (response rate 61 %) second-year students participated in the quantitative survey at the beginning of the semester, 109 students at the end of the semester.

METHODS

The study is a mixed method design. The qualitative component involves a case study while the quantitative component consists of an online survey. Qualitative and quantitative data regarding collaborative problem solving was collected at different time points using focus group interviews, one-on-one interviews, digital logbooks and an online self-assessment tool.

RESULTS

Qualitative analysis revealed insights into three key themes: (1) Collaboration, encompassing consulting with each other, and capitalising on each other's qualities and strengths; (2) Problem solving, encompassing quicker and easier problem solving, allocating assignments, coming to a joint solution, and problem-solving method; and (3) Learning from each other, encompassing learning from each other's knowledge and experience, and from each other's ideas. No growth in collaborative problem-solving development was statistically shown in the group.

CONCLUSIONS

This study gives an ambiguous view on students' perception of their CPS development through involvement in various Carion assignments. Based on this exploratory investigation, prematurely labelling Carion as a potential educational environment for developing CPS among undergraduate nursing students in community healthcare would be unwarranted. Further research is needed, particularly in scrutinising the interplay between CPS and diverse learning activities, assignments and learning outcomes within this specific hybrid serious game context.

Critical-emancipatory educational intervention through games to face gender violence

OBJECTIVES

to analyze an educational intervention, through game "Violetas", for the qualification of professionals who work in the fight against gender violence.

METHODS

a qualitative study, involving 28 professionals from intersectoral services to assist women in situations of violence, located in three Brazilian capitals. Data were collected through Critical-Emancipatory Workshops, being submitted to thematic content analysis through software.

RESULTS

sexist patterns, pornography and sexual diversity were topics listed by participants for intervention in reality. To this end, they suggested orientation actions on gender violence, promotion of individual and group assistance and service network consolidation.

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS

the intervention proved to be playful, due to the use of games, critical, due to the fact that it allowed reflection on the theme, emancipatory, due to the possibility of professionals rethinking their practice and qualifying themselves to face the problem.

Puzzle game-based learning: a new approach to promote learning of principles of coronary artery bypass graft surgery

INTRODUCTION

Since learning with high educational quality requires an advanced intervention. This study seeks to answer how many puzzles game-based training can improve knowledge and cognitive function of surgical technology students in CABG surgery and its sequence, as well as the tools and equipment used in each stage of surgery and the sequence of their preparation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study was carried out as a quasi-experimental single-group pre-test-post-test, during which, after designing a puzzle game including various stages of surgery (from the preparation of the patient for surgical sutures and the necessary equipment to perform each stage), 18 people from third-year surgical technology students who met the inclusion criteria were entered in the study by convenience sampling method and based on the sample size determined using a similar study and they participated in the test of knowledge and cognitive function, that the validity and reliability were measured, before the intervention and 14 days after the intervention (using a puzzle game). Data were analyzed using descriptive and Wilcoxon statistical tests.

RESULTS

After the withdrawal of 2 people, 15 person (93.80 per cent) of the students were female, the average age of students was 21.87 ± 0.71 years, and 50% (8 people) of them were 22 years old. Also, the average score of the end-of-semester exam of the heart surgery technology course was 15.19 ± 2.30 (the lowest score was 11.25, and the highest score was 18.63), and the score of 43.80% (7 people) of them were in the range of 15.01-17.70, and their average of grade point average was 17.31 ± 1.10 (the lowest grade point average is 15 and the highest grade point average is 19.36) and grade point average 75% (11 people) of students were 16-18. The average scores of knowledge(5.75 ± 1.65 vs. 2.68 ± 0.79) and cognitive performance(6.31 ± 2.57 vs. 2.00 ± 1.09) of students in the post-intervention phase were significantly higher than the pre-intervention phase (P < 0.0001).

CONCLUSION

The results of the present study showed that the use of puzzle games in CABG surgery training led to a significant improvement in the knowledge and cognitive performance of surgical technology students regarding the stages of CABG surgery and its sequence, as well as the tools and equipment used in each stage of surgery and the sequence of their preparation.

The study on designed gamified mobile learning model to assess students' learning outcome of accounting education

This study constructs an innovative course for accounting teaching based on a student-centered strategy. The curriculum is designed through the effective teaching module (BOPPPS) to assist students to understand accounting knowledge. A game-based mobile learning environment is created by developing an accounting mobile game and combining it with a mobile learning system (TronClass). The private technology university students had been selected by purposive sampling. A total of 81 accounting majored students, among them, 41 students are in the experimental group, and the rest were in the control group. The quasi-experimental design was to be applied in curriculum development. Meanwhile, quantitative data were collected by questionnaires and the qualitative data were collected through interviews. The result shows that game-based mobile learning can be beneficial to teaching effectiveness. And the regression model supports that information quality and service quality have positive predictive power on use intention. In addition, use intention and user satisfaction impacted learning engagement positively. Further, user satisfaction has a mediating effect. Finally, some suggestions are put forward to provide references for accounting educators and researchers.
