Abstract
Prior COVID-19 infection may elevate activity of the behavioral immune system-the psychological mechanisms that foster avoidance of infection cues-to protect the individual from contracting the infection in the future. Such "adaptive behavioral immunity" may come with psychological costs, such as exacerbating the global pandemic's disruption of social and emotional processes (i.e., pandemic disruption). To investigate that idea, we tested a mediational pathway linking prior COVID infection and pandemic disruption through behavioral immunity markers, assessed with subjective emotional ratings. This was tested in a sample of 734 Mechanical Turk workers who completed study procedures online during the global pandemic (September 2021-January 2022). Behavioral immunity markers were estimated with an affective image rating paradigm. Here, participants reported experienced disgust/fear and appraisals of sickness/harm risk to images varying in emotional content. Participants self-reported on their previous COVID-19 diagnosis history and level of pandemic disruption. The findings support the proposed mediational pathway and suggest that a prior COVID-19 infection is associated with broadly elevated threat emotionality, even to neutral stimuli that do not typically elicit threat emotions. This elevated threat emotionality was in turn related to disrupted socioemotional functioning within the pandemic context. These findings inform the psychological mechanisms that might predispose COVID survivors to mental health difficulties.

Abstract
Health-related behaviours have been related to brain structural features. In developing settings, such as Latin America, high social inequality has been inversely associated with several health-related behaviours affecting brain development. Understanding the relationship between health behaviours and brain structure in such settings is particularly important during adolescence when critical habits are acquired and ingrained. In this cross-sectional study, we carry out a multimodal analysis identifying a brain region associated with health-related behaviours (i.e., adiposity, fitness, sleep problems and others) and cognitive/academic performance, independent of socioeconomic status in a large sample of Chilean adolescents. Our findings suggest that the relationship between health behaviours and cognitive/academic performance involves a particular brain phenotype that could play a mediator role. These findings fill a significant gap in the literature, which has largely focused on developed countries and raise the possibility of promoting healthy behaviours in adolescence as a means to influence brain structure and thereby cognitive/academic achievement, independently of socioeconomic factors. By highlighting the potential impact on brain structure and cognitive/academic achievement, policymakers could design interventions that are more effective in reducing health disparities in developing countries.

Abstract
Traumatic events have significant negative impacts throughout one's life. We aimed to comprehensively examine the early associations between traumatic events and suicidality among adolescents. In a cross-sectional sample of 260,423 adolescents in Deyang, China in September 2021, we assessed individual traumatic events, cumulative types, and patterns, alongside suicide risk scores and ideation, attempts, or plans. Linear and Poisson regression models adjusted for demographic confounders evaluated the association. Robust associations existed between interpersonal violence-related traumatic events and higher suicidality, with physical abuse demonstrating the strongest correlation. Moreover, suicide risk scores displayed a clear trend, indicating a progressively stronger association with suicidality as cumulative traumatic event types increased. Four distinct traumatic patterns emerged, including low traumas, high physical abuse, high death/serious injuries of a loved one, and multiple traumas, with the latter showing the strongest association with suicidality. Notably, the stratified analysis showed these associations were more pronounced in females, urban residents, only children, left-behind children, and those aged 13-15, while weaker in participants from families with intact parental relationships and middle socioeconomic status. Understanding the role of demographic factors and traumatic patterns in identifying at-risk youth can enable early detection and targeted interventions for suicide-related concerns.

Abstract
Background The early adversity is associated with a series of negative outcomes in adulthood, and the impact on the cerebral cortex may be one of the fundamental causes of these adverse consequences in adulthood. In this study, we aim to investigate the causal relationship between early adversity and changes in cerebral cortex structure using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods The GWAS summary statistics of 6 early adversity traits were obtained from individuals of European ancestry in the UK Biobank. The GWAS summary statistics of 34 known functional cortical regions were obtained from the ENIGMA Consortium. Causal relationships between the adversity factors and brain cortical structure were assessed using the inverse-variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, and weighted median methods, with IVW being the primary evaluation method. Cochran's Q-test, MR-PRESSO, leave-one-out analysis, and funnel plot examination were employed to detect potential heterogeneity and pleiotropy, as well as to identify and exclude outliers. Results At a global level, no causal relationship was found between early adversity and cortical thickness (TH) or surface area (SA) of the brain. However, at the regional level, early adversity was found to potentially influence the TH of the caudal anterior cingulate, superior temporal, entorhinal, paracentral, lateral occipital, banks of the superior temporal sulcus, and supramarginal regions, as well as the SA of the pars triangularis, lateral occipital, parahippocampal, medial orbitofrontal, and isthmus cingulate regions. All findings were nominally significant and passed sensitivity analyses, with no significant heterogeneity or pleiotropy detected. Discussion Our study provides evidence for the association between early adversity and alterations in brain cortical structure, which may serve as a foundation for certain mental disorders. Furthermore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) might be considered as a promising tool to aid healthcare professionals in identifying individuals with a history of adverse experiences, allowing for early interventions.

Abstract
Regional brain activity abnormalities have been reported in major depressive disorder (MDD) with childhood trauma (CT). However, these findings were variable and equivocal. The present study aims to explore further the correlation between CT and the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) alteration in MDD. In this study, we recruited 60 healthy controls (HCs) and 66 MDD patients to complete resting-state fMRI scans. All MDD patients were evaluated clinical symptoms and childhood trauma experience using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 (HDRS-17), the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Compared to HCs, MDD patients demonstrated significantly altered ALFF in the right middle occipital gyrus (MOG), bilateral inferior temporal gyrus (ITG), bilateral cerebellum posterior lobe, bilateral anterior cingulate gyrus (ACC), and bilateral superior frontal gyrus (SFG). More importantly, we found negative correlation between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) scores and ALFF value appeared mainly in the right ITG among MDD patients. After adjusting for covariates (age, gender, mean framewise displacement (FD), HRDS-17, and HAMA scores), this correlation remained significant. Meanwhile, ALFF in the right ITG could distinguish MDD patients with or without CSA (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.713). Our findings revealed that the regional brain activity abnormalities in the right ITG might be a potential biomarker for MDD patients with CSA.

Abstract
Early life stress (ELS) is defined as a period of severe and/or chronic trauma, as well as environmental/social deprivation or neglect in the prenatal/early postnatal stage. Presently, the impact of ELS on the retina in the adult stage is unknown. The long-term consequences of ELS at retinal level were analyzed in an animal model of maternal separation with early weaning (MSEW), which mimics early life maternal neglect. For this purpose, mice were separated from the dams for 2 h at postnatal days (PNDs) 4-6, for 3 h at PNDs 7-9, for 4 h at PNDs 10-12, for 6 h at PNDs 13-16, and weaned at PND17. At the end of each separation period, mothers were subjected to movement restriction for 10 min. Control pups were left undisturbed from PND0, and weaned at PND21. Electroretinograms, visual evoked potentials, vision-guided behavioral tests, retinal anterograde transport, and retinal histopathology were examined at PNDs 60-80. MSEW induced long-lasting functional and histological effects at retinal level, including decreased retinal ganglion cell function and alterations in vision-guided behaviors, likely associated to decreased synaptophysin content, retina-superior colliculus communication deficit, increased microglial phagocytic activity, and retinal ganglion cell loss through a corticoid-dependent mechanism. A treatment with mifepristone, injected every 3 days between PNDs 4 and16, prevented functional and structural alterations induced by MSEW. These results suggest that retinal alterations might be included among the childhood adversity-induced threats to life quality, and that an early intervention with mifepristone avoided ELS-induced retinal disturbances.

Abstract
Objectives Physical activity (PA) is considered beneficial in slowing the progression and improving the neurodegenerative disease prognosis. However, the association between PA and neurodegenerative diseases remains unknown. In this study, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to estimate the causal association between PA phenotypes and neurodegenerative diseases. Materials and methods Genetic variants robustly associated with PA phenotypes, used as instrumental variables, were extracted from public genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics. Neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), were considered outcomes. GWAS information was also obtained from the most recent large population study of individuals with European ancestry. Multiple MR methods, pleiotropy tests and sensitivity analyses were performed to obtain a robust and valid estimation. Results We found a positive association between moderate-to-vigorous physical activities and ALS based on the inverse variance weighted MR analysis method (OR: 2.507, 95% CI: 1.218–5.160, p = 0.013). The pleiotropy test and sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness and validity of these MR results. No causal effects of PA phenotypes were found on PD and AD. Conclusion Our study indicates a causal effect of PA on the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Genetically predicted increases in self-reported moderate-to-vigorous PA participation could increase the risk of ALS in individuals of European ancestry. Precise and individualized prescriptions of physical activity should be provided to the elderly population.

Abstract
The quality of one’s adult health and the chances of maintaining cognitive ability in aging stem directly from the quality of care one receives as an infant. Formal studies of maternal care can be traced back at least a century. Revelations of behavioral outcomes after maternal deprivation in primates were followed by discoveries of systemic and brain growth factors mediated by the caregiver–offspring relationship in rodents. More recently, much of the genetic/epigenetic bases of maternal care has been defined and positively linked to adult health and cognitive ability in senescence. The history of this field is both tragic and fascinating. The early primate work, while informative, was abusive. The initial rodent work was ridiculed before its importance was recognized. The final lesson learned is that infant/toddler care matters a lot. Today, we have a better understanding of the biology underlying maternal care and its transmission across generations as well as a scientific basis for massaging premature infants and hugging our children.
